Mr Moshé
Before you get to the question you have to understand that this is a discussion, and that you will be graded for “discussing” . You might be wondering, “How do you grade ‘discussing’, Mr. Moshé?” Well, here’s what you have to do.
- Answer the Discussion Question completely (50%).
- Respond to at least one classmate’s answer (50%).
- A response to a classmate must be substantial.
- Substantial means having something to add to another’s comment:
- agreement with explanation,
- disagreement with explanation,
- add something completely new.
Here’s the question:
Why did Doyle choose Watson to narrate Hound instead of having Holmes tell the story himself? What are the benefits and drawbacks of doing it this way?
Be advised that I will not go through how to answer every question. You must get into the practice of answering every part of a question.
Now, go ahead to your class discussion by clicking the link for your period:

Be advised that I will not go through how to answer every question (as I did for this one below) all the time. You must get into the practice of answering every part of a question.
Now, go ahead and read the rest of this, answer the Discussion Question, and submit it.
You must be sure to answer every part of the question and to respond to another’s comments. That is the catch when it comes to getting your points for discussion assignments. It is very important to
really read the entire question before responding to it. If you look at this question closely, you’ll notice that there are actually two separate interrogatives, or question statements:
- Why did Doyle choose Watson to narrate Hound instead of having Holmes tell the story himself?
- Explain the reason why the author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, chose Watson to be the narrator rather than Holmes.
- What are the benefits and drawbacks of doing it this way?
- This asks you to do two things:
- Explain the benefits of having Watson narrate the tale,
- Explain the drawbacks of having Watson narrate the tale.
Now answer the Discussion Question:
Why did Doyle choose Watson to narrate Hound instead of having Holmes tell the story himself? What are the benefits and drawbacks of doing it this way?

This is your first graded online assignment. Hence, things will be done in this ‘discussion’ a bit differently than they will for the rest of the year. This will be a regularly weighted assignment worth 10 points. Let’s see who doesn’t earn the full 10 points, eh?
WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED READING THIS YOU MUST POST THE FOLLOWING COMMENT TO THIS DISCUSSION.YOU DO NOT HAVE TO USE BULLETS AS I HAVE:
- 2.5 points – YOUR FIRST NAME & LAST INITIAL (for instance Johnathan Hancock would be “John H”)
- 2.5 points – PERIOD/Block # (for instance 1=Block 1, 2=Block 2, etc., etc.)
- 2.5 points – DATE (for instance August 28, 2009 could be 8/28/09)
- 2.5 points – AND THE TWO WORDS “I Agree”
That’ll be 10 points for those who post properly.
Read the entire page, BEFORE you post….VERY IMPORTANT!!!
The rules are rather simple, really, when it comes to posting to discussions. You have created the rules you will work by in class and at home: your classroom rules. Those rules apply when you are online doing HW.
So, when you have to go online to do an assignment you may be directed to an area devoted to your period.
Please follow these instructions once you get to a discussion area:
- Read the posted discussion topic entry. The whole thing.
- Determine what you will say in response. You may want to do this on paper. Get your thoughts in order (with a main idea sentence, details and elaboration), organized, capitalized and punctuated properly.
- When you are ready to post, it is very important that you follow these guidelines so that I can enter your grade appropriately:
- Use your First Name and Last Initial ONLY. So Horatio Jackson would enter Horatio J. Get it? Very good.
- Do NOT enter a website URL/webpage address.
- Type your comment in the box provided.
- Click “Submit Comment”.
- And Wallah!!!!! You have posted your response to the discussion topic.
NOW! YOU ARE FINISHED READING THIS.
YOU MUST NOW POST THE FOLLOWING COMMENT TO THIS DISCUSSION; YOU DO NOT HAVE TO USE BULLETS AS I HAVE:
- YOUR FIRST NAME & LAST INITIAL
- PERIOD #
- TODAY’S DATE
- AND THE TWO WORDS “I Agree”
SCROLL DOWN AND POST.

The thirteen word list I gave you last week is the first vocabulary list I assigned to you for the book, The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. You need only have complete chart entries (something in all 4 collumns) for ten of the thirteen words on the list. The VISS charts should be done on paper and is due when you complete it.
Here is the list of words: fiord, civilized, transportation, admiral, bitter, resolution, dread, luminous, moor, coherent, construction, peril, manuscript.
By clicking on the link below, you can download a copy of the VISS chart I want you to use for your vocabulary. If you click the word “view” you will only be able to view it (hmmm).

Day 2 – Discussing What’s at the Core
The Final Word
The Final Word is a whole class discussion event. Here’s how it works. For HW last night, you each were asked to bring with you to class today a phrase/passage from your Code of Student Conduct book that addressed a specific trait. Well, we’ll take it from there.
Get the details on Day 2 by clicking here.
Day 3 (Thursday) Crafting The Rules
Small Group Drafting
Today, you are drafting your own (individual set of rules – one for each trait. Then, you’ll share them in a small group to decide on a group set of eight you agree on. Then you will present them to the class for ultimate selection. The class will vote for the favorite rule on each trait.
Get the details on Day 3 by clicking here.
Day 4 (Friday) Publishing the Rules

Why have we gone through all this, if we aren’t going to put it out there. You will work hard at having a great and fun friday in this culminating activity. You will create classroom rules posters to post around the room.Get the details on
