“Only The Good Die Young” by Billy Joel
Come out Virginia, don’t let me me wait;
You Catholic girls start much too late
But sooner or later it comes down to fate
I might as well be the one.
They showed you a statue and told you to pray They built you a temple and locked you away
But they never told you the price that you pay
For things that you might have done…
Only the good die young.
You might have heard I run with a dangerous crowd
We ain’t too pretty, we ain’t too proud
We might be laughing a bit too loud
But that never hurt no one
Come on Virginia show me a sign
Send up a signal, I’ll throw you the line
The stained-glass curtain you’re hiding behind
Never lets in the sun.
Darling, only the good die young
You got a nice white dress and a party on your confirmation
You got a brand new soul,
And a cross of gold.
But Virginia they didn’t give you quite enough information
You didn’t count on me
When you were counting on your rosary
They say there’s a heaven for those who will wait
Some say it’s better but I say it ain’t.
I’d rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints;
Sinners are much more fun…
You know that only the good die young
You say your mother told you all that I could give you was a reputation
She never cared for me
But did she ever say a prayer for me?

In the song Equality 7-2521 and Liberty 5-3000 are the dangerous crowd and their different then the others. The man ( Equality 7-2521) is trying to get the woman (liberty 5-3000) to go and leave the rest to go somewhere. In the story this somewhere is the uncharted forest it is where no man has gone before. The man says the good die young but he doesn’t want to be one of the good this is talking about Equality 7-2521 he doesn’t to be good if he cant be free
Good work!
Multiple characters speak and behave toward Equality 7-2521 by, them all being and acting the same. “Only the Good Die young”, Equality isn’t bad, but some of the other men are. The things Liberty 5-3000 says to Equality is that she likes him. She smiles at him a lot and likes to hang around him. “Men are not supposed to notice women and women are not supposed to notice men.” This is forbidden in there society and they can’t make love if this is forbidden. Liberty gave Equality many symbols that she likes him “come on Virginia show me a sign and I’ll throw you the line”.
Nice. A little confusing. I can tell you thought this through. Thing is, Equality is the “bad” one in his society, but he accepts this. All the other people who conform to the rules of society “die young” because they are “good” while they follow the rules and just accept things as they seem. To be bad in Equality’s world is actually to search for personal truth. We search for our own truths. It’s kind of what we do from the moment we realize we can decide our own fate. But how far fetched is this world Equality lives in? Are we so far from it?
All secondary characters are like Equality 7-2521. Liberty 5-300 for example. She is like Equality because she likes him back. In the 3rd Stanza Billy Joel talks about him and his dangerous crowd and how they “ain’t too pretty.” Thats showing how humble Billy is and that’s in relation to Equality. Because Equality is quite a humble person with his secondary characters.
