Can you think of other traits a person can have (or lack)?
Post a comment on a trait not listed: define it; create a word web for it; provide an etymology (what’s an etymology?); use it in its various forms; tell us what people have to say about it.
Now, take out your sheet of paper from class. You should have a word web on it. You should have a quote, and for that quote you should have written down your idea of what is meant by it. You should have an idea of how that quote could apply to you.
-
Post your Quote with an explanation for why you picked it. Why do you like it?
-
Post what you think it means.
-
Post how you think it applies to you.
-
Then explain the role your term plays in society. You might like to take these questions one at a time – place your word in the blank. Some of the questions may not work for your term- you may need to use another form of the word in the blank, and/or you may need to change a preposition or two in the quesiton:
How does __(your term here)__ effect the creation of laws? Do those laws apply to you?
In what way does _________________ effect individual’s rights? What if there were no (one) _________________ of/for you or yours? (remember what that expression means?)
How does _________________ affect freedom for all, safety for all? What if _________________ were taken away for/from you?
What role does _________________ play as far as making certain students have opportunities to grow?
My quote is “Honesty is the best policy”. I picked it because I think it best describes honesty. I like it because its straight to the point. I think it means that its not good to lie and you should always tell the truth. It applies to me and everyone because it says not to lie and its better to tell the truth. The role honesty plays in society is if you be honest then you will succed in life. I think that a trait that people might sometimes lack is confindence.
Definition – Confidence- faith or belief that one will act in a right, proper, or effective way
Etymology – Middle English
Synonyms – Self-Esteem, Assurance
Sentence – She had great confidence in her ability to succeed.
My opinion – I think that people should always be confident even though they aren’t
A trait that i chose is…Reliable. Reliable means trustworthy or dependable. I feel that this trait should be used more often in schools. Students should be reliable on eachother and there teachers. Some People are reliable not many and i feel students and teachers should be more reliable.
My real trait was responsibility. My quote was “If you don’t want something to happen tommarow make sure its prevented today.” I like this quote because it means something to me and i understand it. This quote means to prevent something from happening tommarow prevent it today. This word applies to me because if i dont want something bad to happen to me tommarrow all i have to do is prevent it today.
Responsibility.my quote was “A promise made is a debt unpaid”- Robert w. service. to me it means that if you make a promise that you have to keep it no matter what. if I promised someone something I would do it because thats being responsible.witout responsibility we could not rely on nobody.we could not trust no one and the world would be a wreck.
I think that all of the Core Character Traits of Broward County are like a big family. They all blend in with each other and every time you talk about one trait, you might not notice, but you are mentioning another. They are all simply interrelated.
What role does kindness play as far as making certain students have opportunities to grow?
Kindness plays a huge role as far as how students have oppurtunities to grow because every time students are nice to each other it just brings warmth to your heart, not just at school but outside of school too! “Opportunities to grow” in this case means to become mature enough to stop teasing kids that aren’t like you (race, gender, social status) and to become kind to them and instead help them out or just stop making fun of them. In the end, kindness makes students grow by being nice to each other and helping each other out, and here’s when the trait cooperation come’s in hand. Kindness and cooperation are related, and sometimes they can b
The trait that I was assigned to is respect. The quote that I picked is: “You should respect each other and refrain from disputes; you should not, like water and oil, repel each other, but should, like milk and water, mingle together.” I picked this quote because I think it is something everyone could follow. We shouldn’t have to fight over something like land, or which country/citizen owns the most money. I think it means that, you should get to know people better, and instead of fighting over things that have no reason to be fought over, just put differences aside without fighting, and be there for one another. Anywhere we go, there are a few people who still show respect for people: Letting people go by without using “unneccessary language”, opening/holding doors for people, drivers allowing other drivers to pass by without causing a scene. Things like that. I might go somewhere and hold doors open for people, even though sometimes I stand there for quite a while, letting others through as well. I see people who hold doors for others, and act kind. Maybe other citizens could learn to show the same respect they have inside, from others who show them how.
Alicia, I like what you wrote. It is completely true.
—–Simply stating that you agree is not substantial. You have to add to the post you agree with. Post again, and give us something else to think about. Extend or expand.
The trait that i was assigned to was kidness and this trait was pretty easy. Everyone knows how to be kind in the world we live in today but a lot of people arent kind still.
—–What do you mean by this? – “They follow some of the rules but they also dont follow a lot of the other rules.”
So being kind is treating someone nicely and not pushing or shoving them around or something like that.
so the moral of the story is be kind and you will recieve kindness !!! have a nice day (lol)
My character trait was kindness something that people should at least try to have because when you portray kindness your not only helping yourself but you might brightens someone elses day aswell. the quote i picked for kindness is:”more tears are shed because of mens lack of manners than their lack of morals.” this quote obviously doesn’t have the word kindness in it but if you think about it , it does go with it . i like this quote because if you think about it and incorporate it into your life it might teach you to not always trust someone when they seem perfectly nice their morals might be fine but a man(boys)manners might not be on point . i like this quote because i can be sort of gullable sometimes and i tent to trust and befriend people that shouldnt (cough cough, people if you know me you know who im talking about !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)recently i started to trust some one that i was starting to get close to and then out of know where he just completely stabbed me in the back i really thought he was honest and nice but i was wrong and even though i didnt cry i was suprised and upset about it . moments like these i really tthink makes a person stronger and it kind of sends a blast of reality to that person or yourself and makes you realize how STUPID you were to act nice and trust some one when you shouldnt !!!
my character trait is tolerance. my quote is hatred is a feeling which leads to the extinction of values.this quote meansthat hatred is accepting a persons differences which can lead to diliking other peoples beliefs. i picked this because this is very important in our society today.
—–I agree, and why is this important in society today?
—–Also, please place quotes in quotation marks, and credit the person who said the quote. You are doing great! You just need to make some minor adjustments.
The trait I think a lot of people lack is GRATITUDE.
Definition- n. The state of being grateful; thankfulness.
In other words it means to be grateful about things.
Etymology- Middle English, from Old French, probably from Late Latin gratitudo, from Latin gratus, pleasing.
It’s good to have gratitude in life. It will help you realize all the things you should be thankful that you have, and are able to do.
—–NICE! Well done. And with that, I should like to pose this question to everyone: What are you grateful for?
i had respect. The quote i had was “use time wisely in ways that are pure because there is not a lot of time in life” It applied to me because i don’t use my time very wisely. That makes me not to respect myself or how i pertray myself. I don’t use my time to reflect onto a better future.Synonyms for this word would be esteem, poilieness, cicity, admiration, regard, and concideration. The denotative def. is : showing consideration, understanding, and regaurd for people, places and things. My definition.. is to treat others wisely. Many people lack respect for others. By overshadowing them when they are talking and by being rude! People may not respect others because they think people don’t respect them and they think that is right. well i was going to put a smiley but you dislike smileys and that would be disrespectful.
I think that a trait that people might sometimes lack is: CONFIDENCE
Definition:Confidence- faith or belief that one will act in a right, proper, or effective way.
Etymology: Middle English
Synonyms: Self-Esteem, Assurance
Sentence: She had great confidence in her ability to succeed.
My opinion: I think that when people are sometimes negative about certain things,
they need to put a smile on, be happy, enjoy life, gain some
self-esteem, you only live once!
BE CONFIDENT!
I had to do citizenship. The quote I picked off of the paper is to Always do more than is required of you. I picked this quote because it is very true. I think it means if you do more than is required, pretty soon you will be rewarded. I think it applies to me because If I didn’t do more than what was required of me, I would be in the 6th grade instead of the 8th because I am only 11 years old. Citizenship can effect the creation of laws because if people aren’t being good citizens they may make new laws to make you be a good citizen by making some new laws. These laws do apply to me because I live in America where I should be honored to live in this great a country, and should be a good citizen because I want to not because they have to force me to. Citizenship can effect individual’s lives because if someone in particular doesn’t pay their taxes they could go to jail. The next part I didn’t quite understand. Citizenship effects freedom for all because it can but bad citizens in jail because bad citizens don’t normally follow the rules, otherwise they wouldn’t be considered bad citizens. If citizenship was taken away from me I would probably end up in jail for not doing what I was supposed to do. Citizenship gives kids opportunities to grow by allowing kids to have the choice of being good citizens and are able to live a happy life, or they can choose the bad side of citizenship, where most of those people end up either on the run, in jail, somehow on the news, or with a tombstone over their head. All in all, be a good citizen and you will be happy, happy, happy.
Kindness. My quote is, “Peace and friendship with all mankind is our wisest policy, and I wish we may be permitted to pursue it.” I picked this because peace and friendship will be important in our daily grown-up lives and for all mankind it should be a policy to use. I liked it because it was it explained how kindness is extremely important and how it applies to us teenagers, growing up in the U.S. It applies to me by telling me that I should be nice to the people around me (relatives, students, teachers, etc.) and that I can spread this idea around so that people could be nicer to each other.
I “critically” think people lack GRATITUDE.
Definition: The state of being happy with what you have and having appreciation.
etymology: [Origin: 1400–50; late ME
Citizenship:
quote- “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others” Gandhi
This quote really stuck out to me because you’ll know what kind of person you want to be or are if you do things to help others before yourself. If you dont know what kind of a person you are, then if you help others before helping yourself you might find a talent or trait you didnt know you had.
2. Citizenship is having respect for the people around you, the military, the government and other people’s nationality. It is behaving yourself like a good citizen of your country.
3. It applies to me in a way that says that I should care for other people’s race and color, and I should obey all other rules in the classroom and even the laws of my government.
How does citizenship effect the creation of laws? It affects it by telling you to follow them all. These laws do apply to me, and everyone else in the country.
In what way does citizenship effect individual’s rights? It does this by stating that you can say whatever you want, freedom of speech, but to a cetain extent where you cannot commit a hate crime (opposing other’s nationality and background.) What if there were no one had citizenship for me or anyone else? Then, people would get really offended that you do not respect where they came from and they might take legal action.
How does citizenship affect freedom for all, safety for all?It affects freedom and safety for all because freedom is having the right to say or do anything. But if you said something offensive and non-citizen like, then you would be taking that freedom to an extreme and you would not have safety because people might go over the edge and do something bad to you. What if citizenship were taken away from me? Then, I would go still not trash anyone’s ethnicity.
What role does citizenship play as far as making certain students have opportunities to grow? Citizenship teaches students to respect everyone’s differences and making them all able to grow in a way that they can see everyone equal.
I love your example of Self-expression Basmatee.
4.) I truly believe that some people in our society have no toleraence with in them those that do are what holds the world from breaking into uncontrolable chaos! The balance in this society is just right to mantain a good mix of america. Because those without tolerance stick to there own cliques those with this virtue either stick to themselves or find people of the same moral beliefs because they know who is really right.
TOLERANCE
1,2,3,) My qoute is ” The world is round so why take sides?”
I choose this qoute because to me this qoute is hopelessit its not simple and to the point. The world is round so why do people take sides? This to me is a very intresting question because for example you could spend your whole life fighting to keep things equal, fair and just. But there will always be people that think that they are just better for whatever reason that might be. That’s how it is, it shouldn’t be, but what can we do to change their minds? We do the only thing we can do, live life the way you know is right. And tolerate the simple minded that believe people who look, act, talk, or walk differently then they do are not on their level and should sieze to be reconized by them. So over all i did not pick this qoute because i favorite it or its the one that made most sense to me like most others did but simply because it’s a great qoute/question that is simply without an answer.
Do you agree? Plz, Tell me your opinion.
4.) I truly believe that some people in our society have no toleraence with in them those that do are what holds the world from breaking into uncontrolable chaos! The balance in this society is just right to mantain a good mix of america. BEcause thise without trolerance stick to there own cliques those with this virtue either stick to themselves or find people of the same moral beliefs because they know who is really right.
My trait is responsibility. The quote I choose, “The price of greatness is responsibility,”-Winston Churchill, because without being responsible, you cannot accomplish your goals, or reach your dreams. In order to have a sucessful life, you must be responsible.
“Who is respected? He who respects others.”
* not all parents might teach there children respect and not to put anyone down but those are usually the kids that are in always detention, getting in trouble and starting things with other people…FOR NO REASON! Children who are not taught respect should be taught the importance of respect it would change their lives, maybe be a total turn around for them.
** To MR.MOSHE no sorry is sometimes not enough but even if the apologe is not excepted it does not even matter because YOU feel better it does not even matter what the other person thinks. Or you can just prove that you are sorry, by not doing it again.
*** A trait that is not in the Broward county school traits is self-expresion i thing this is an inportant trait because it is important to express yourself sometimes if you don’t and you keep it all bottled up in side you would start to feel depressed its kind of like when you break your moms favorite vase but you dont tell her because your afraid she will be mad then after a couple of days you feel really guilty. Then eventually you will have to tell your mom its basically the same concept EXPRESS YOURSELF!
Generosity. Generosity is a trait that everyone should have, not being greedy, thinking of others. The definition is “willingness to give money, help or time freely.” The etymology is latin, from the 15th century.
Character!
I choose this trait because I belive that many people under estimate such an important trait in a person. Character tells who a person really is. If they have a strong character than they don’t care about showing who they really are no matter what circumstances and they not affraid to tell the truth these things are what make up a good chracter and an overall decent human being.
Character- (Noun) Moral Quality
Syn: Personality
Umm.. what do you mean what people have to say about it? I still don’t undersand etymology?
Mr. Moshe – Sory, I just finished reading the comment about no myspace adresses, and I just want to say sorry about including it in my earlier post. Heh…eep, I won’t do that again ^^
once again, my aplogies *hides behind couch sheeishly and hopes to not have credit taken off*
My quote for kindness is “One can pay back the loan of gold, but one dies forever in debt to those who are kind” – Malayan proverb. I picked this quote beacuse I think that what it says is very true. You can pay back someone who loaned you something like money, but you can never pay back someone who was kind to you. The role kindness plays as far as making certain students have opportunities to grow is that if there kind to people more people will be kind to them. For example if you call a store for directions and just say “What are your directions” instead of saying “Hi how are you doing today? May I know were you are located?” people treat you differently because you are being kind.
1. “A single arrow is easily broken but not ten in a bundle.” The reason behind me choosing this quote is the fact that it simply states what can be explained in a harder to explain method, which could result in lesser understanding of it. Though it simply states that cooperation stands strong, it tells it in a method that explains its quite well on my part
2. I think it means that though one can be easily defeated or weakened, standing strong or working together towards a goal is much much stronger.
3. I think that it implies to me in the terms that I understand I must work with others to achieve things I cannot do by myself, that also people must depend on me as they go onto achieve either they’re goal or the over-all goal
4. Cooperation plays a major part in holding our society together. It bands together either the greatest minds or strongest people to build the greatest monuments, as a example.
A) Cooperation I do not think entirely entails creation of laws, as others might, but certainly can go against them, in a riot, or support them, as in a authority-office force.
B) Cooperation effects a individuals rights as by theuir own physhical/mental abilities, forcing them to accept or help even when they wish not to. If there was not, momuments (again using this as example) would or could surely crumble, as in the combined effects to withstand a strong storm.
C) Cooperation effects freedom as in how much the opposing will withstand, such a mob trying to burn a house. If cooperation abilities were taken away, the society would or could either fall apart, fall into chaos, or be torn apart.
D) Using coopertaion, students can learn how to work together with co-workers to achieve the company goal as well as they’re own. It teaches self respect and discipline and can not only enable interaction with humans or animals, but also with machines and such.
kim from period 1 is right about the traits who interrelate with other ones.
My word was kindness. The quote I chose was:
“Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves”
– James Barrie
I picked this quote because it kind of defines what a doctor does(that’s what I wanna be when I grow up). Doctors are always trying to find new things in medicine and when they find it they are “bringing sunshine” to the lives of people. It would help him because if he has a family member or he/she himself has that disease or virus he would be able to help himself. That is why I chose this comment for kindness.
I think Kim from period 1 is right
I don’t know if we were supposed to answer those questions but oh well here are my answers about honesty.
1.Honesty effects the creation of laws because people that make the laws have to be honest about making the rules followable. These laws apply to me because they are laws.
2. Honesty effects individual’s rights bcause if you lie you get to go to jail if you get caught. If nobody was honest then our world would be total chaos.
3. Honesty affects freedom and safety for all because you lie and go to jail you won’t have that much more freedom anymore. If honesty was taken away from me and everyone then everyone would just lie about everything. People would not care about the truth.
4. Honesty plays a big role in making certain students have opppurtunities to grow. With honesty kids or teens grow to be big people that could help rule the U.S. or be President of the United States.
HONESTY
“Honesty is te best policy” That was my quote. I picked this quote because I think it is something that everyone should follow. People say I never cheat or I never lie. But honesty I belive that is a lie. Nobody is perfect including me. I like this because with it you can succeed. Also that is what people have been saying since I was a little tike.(kid) I think it means tell the truth because it is the right thing to do. That is how I interprete it. But that’s just me.I believe it applies to me and everyone. It applies to everyone because I think everyone should tell the truth and be honest.
1. I picked the quote from Abigail Van Buren about Responsibility
“If you want children to keep their feet on the ground, put some responsibility on their shoulders”
i picked this quote because its sooo true. every kid should have some kind of responsibility.
2. i think this quote mean that if you have no responsibility as a kid , then it will be really hard to be independent and on your own as an adult.
3. this aplies to my because i have always had dogs and taking care of them and making sure they eat and go to the bathroom is my responsibility. It will help me be able to take care of things as I get older
4. How does Responsibility effect the creation of laws? Do those laws apply to you? Responsibility affects laws because you have the responsibility to vote for president and to pay your taxes and just be kind to people. and not all of the rules apply to me because im not old enough to vote or pay taxes but i can be nice to people and make sure everyone is being treated fairlly
In what way does Responsibility effect individual’s rights? What if there were no responsibilities for you? Well we all have the right of freedom of speach but everyone has a respnsibility to not hurt anyones feelings. So that would effect what you would say out loud. And i did not have a responsibility i would be REALLY stupid and rude!
How does Responsibility affect freedom for all, safety for all? What if Responsibility were taken away from you? We all have the responsibility to treat every body like equals and make sure everyone has freedom. If responsibility was taken away from me at my age now i think i would act the same because thats how i grew up and how i acted for 13 years. but if i had no responsibility since i was little i think i would be really board and end up like a homeless person on the streets because i was soo lazy
What role does Responsibility play as far as making certain students have opportunities to grow? If kids had the responsibility to do good in school , then there opportunities of what they want to do after high school would grow greatly
My trait is kindness. My rule is:Share and treat people nicely as if they were your bestfriends.
my trait is kindness. My quote is “Attitudes are contagious:the question is this:is yours worth catching?”-Anonymus.I think this means that if you act a certain way somebody might copy you but you want them to copy your good attitude. This applies to me like if my little cousin wants to be like me , i would want him to be like me in a good way with a good attitude.
My trait was tolerance. As I said before, it is accepting others for who they are and not to judge them for their race or culture. I myself am tolerant, maybe even more than tolerant, because I have friends from all over the world and I love them all.
My word is TOLERANCE. My quote is”one can’t make you inferior without your permission.” I chose this because somebody including me, can not get mad over what somebody says. who cares what they think. You are what you are and you and someone else cannot change that. This especially applies to me because if somebody says something about me, I will usually get upset over what somebody said about me.
Respect qualifies to me and my classmates by listening and cooperating to others and be fair to each other. If you don’t have respect for each others their will be chaos and a lot of feelings being hurt. Respect means a lot of things, for example appreciation and kindness. Respect can be connected to other traits like tolerance and self control. respect is connected by tolerance by being fair and listening to others ideas and opinion even if you don’t like them, and also respect id traced to self-control because you have control or restraint of oneself or one’s actions or feelings to give respect to people who all need it.
the rule my group made up for responsibility is …
Its your job to get your work done
RESPONSIBILTY, to me it means having able to be indenpendent about your actions and what needs to be done. It applies to me by when Im class I should make sure im responsible and accountable for what I do. Not everyone is responsible and that is what gets people in trouble. But then again not everyone is perfect, so one point in your life you will mess up and forget that you have to be dependable and capable for all you do. Everyone has responsibilities and some that I practice is at home and school. Like doing my homework or cleaning my room. The older you get the more responsibilties you have to deal with..My quote for responsiblity is:
I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything but I still can do something; I will not refuse to do something I can do
–Helen Keller
To me this means that to always try your best and put much effort in everything you can do because you are responsible for whatever happens.
I like this quote because for some reason that one was the one that caught my eye and really made me think.
my trait is self control. it means having disipline over ones behavior or actions.
My word was citizenship
My quote was Always do more than is required of you. This relates to citizenship because if you do more than is required of you than you might just help some one out.
Self-Control. My quote was “What is right is right, even if no one is doing it. What is wrong is wrong, even if everyone is doing it.” I liked this quote because I understood it and I thought it made complete sense to my word. Self-control is about control of oneself and I think this quote is about that. Self-control is very important as one of the character traits of every school in broward county, because without self-control the world could just do whatever they want and that would lead to complete chaos!
Self-control.
My word was honesty. My qoute was “An honest answer is a sign of true friendship.” What the quote means to me is that if you are not honest in any kind of friendship, then that is not a true friendship. People should take this quote seriously because honesty is one of the most important traits there is.
my word was tolerance. the quote I picked was “all races and tribes in the world are like the different colored flowers in the meadow. all are beautiful.” I picked it because it sounds beautiful and it is true. No matter what we look like or where we come from we are all the equal and beautiful. it effects the laws because we are not supposed to dislike somebody because of their race or religion
humble- marked by meekness or modesty
To me it means serve others as you want to be served.
synonyms- modest, simple, compliant, polite, courteous, unpretending
Honesty – “If you don’t tell the truth, you’ll never have to remember a thing.” It’s fairly self-explanatory, and yet very knowledgeable and true. My translation, ”If what you always say is a lie, you’ll never learn what’s right, because you weren’t going to tell the truth anyway.” For example: If you cheated on a test, you wouldn’t learn the information because you wouldn’t have taken off the time to study. Later in life you might need to know the information, but because you cheated on the test, you got cheated out of the information. The laws were created under the ideals of upholding the moral values of honesty and integrity. The laws were drafted with the idea of keeping honesty as a chief value. Without honesty, teachers would never bother to take the time to teach what is right to their students, government would never tell you about wars, and we would have no basic relevance of life.
Respect qualifies in many ways apreciation and kindness. There was a quote I pick out it was ”He who dose not have the cannot earn respect for others”. I like this quote becuase it means if you dont belive people will look down at you. You have to be brave and strong in this world or no one will give you respect YOU WANT!
