REBEL – Novel Discussion Round 1 – Chapters 1-8
What is the purpose of Minor Characters ?
All minor characters in a work of fiction are written into the story in order to illustrate some aspect of the main character. Some charcters help us to see internal traits. In the book Rebel, Amanda Jane Keeling, AKA Rebel is the main character.
Many times students just take their notes and write them into sentences to describe the minor characters – DO NOT DO THAT.
The assignment is for you to share how each of these characters affect who Rebel is, not to tell about the minor characters.
Remember, the purpose of all minor characters IN ANY STORY is to shed light on the major/main one.
Take notes about each character as you read the story. Please make sure the notes are only to help the you remember who the characters are and how they effect Rebel. You are not to use them to share the affects or at least not directly.
Does the character: (a) make her think?; (b) make her do something she wouldn’t normally do?; (c) make her angry?; (d) create problems?; (e) scare her or make her uncomfortable?; (f) encourage him?; (g) anything I haven’t listed here, etc.?
1. Gram
2. Viola
3. Moses
4. Pookie
5. Tiger
6. Mr. & Mrs. Dolzycki
On a separate sheet of paper, explain how the minor characters affect Rebel’s thoughts and actions. Then post your answers to the Blog.
You must address each of the characters listed. Please post separately for each character listed.
Gram allow Rebel to do something she wouldn’t normally do,like exploring and eating junk food. She lets Rebel’s spirit free from her cage, and gave Rebel a choice other than going to the music festival with her mother, father, and brothers.
Okay just a little tip for everyone the bog does say to send each blog entry about each character seperately!
Gram-I guess she affects Rebel since if it wasn’t for her, she would not have even met Tiger or Moses and Rebel goes to Gram’s house which she enjoys to fix things around the house and stuff.
Tiger-I’m not sure how he affects her but she thinks that he is very big.
Viola-Same thing for Gram…She’s part of the family-ish I guess everyone in your family affects you some kind of way
Moses- He affects her positively so far…I think…because she likes how he is taller than her and how he is attractive.
Pookie-Rebel acts like she hates Pookie but it seems that she has a soft spot for Pookie.
I’m only up to about chapter 3 so i dont know all of the characters. but so far…
Moses: frustrates Rebel because he is always so caught up in video taping and she has to walk both Pookie and Tiger herself. she doesn’t know yet that Moses’s video taping will later help them solve a mystery. At the same time though, Moses also brings out a more sensitive side of Rebel because he gets to show us what she thinks is a good quality in a person and how she feels about herself.
Mom and dad: show us how Rebel feels about her place in her family and about the fact that she is the only non-musical child.
Grandma: makes Rebel feel like she has someone to relate to and that it is sometimes ok to be the odd one out. They are very alike in that they don’t want to be held back but instead want to take chances and live there lifes.
Tiger: also frustrates Rebel. she doesn’t understand how something so big can be so cowardly.
Pookie: I’m not sure yet how he brings out or represents one of Rebels emotions.
well, pookie pretty much gets on Rebles nerves like when she pissed on the floor. even though pookie can be annoying rebel still loves her dog.

GRAM:
In the story it mentions how Gram is able to go out on a whim, or try soemthing risky. Well i think that Rebel is similiar to Gram in many ways, and that Gram has that personality in order to show where Rebel got her rebeling attitude from. In other words Gram sort of emphasizes rebel’s personality.
MOSES:
When Rebel first meets Moses she is surprised by his height and Intrigued in how he is able to relate to her. I think moses sort of brings out the feminine side in her. Because she begins to think of him as attractive and then starts thinking about what she wants in a boy and compares the with moses. And of course she gets a little annoyed with him because of all the video taping and talk of horror nonsense, but what can you expect he’s a boy.
Mr. & Mrs. Dolzycki make Rebel angry and they make her think. Without saying it in the book, Rebel is thankful to them because they gave them their leftover pastries. They make Rebel angry becasue after the college student stole from their store, they didn’t bother to call the police. They made her think by wondering who the theif was.
When Rebel first meets Tiger, he scares her and she’s uncomfortable around him. Rebel is scared of Tiger because of his immense size. But as they come more acquaintanced, Tiger creates problems for Rebel. An example of this was when he pooped on the sidewalk, and she had to pick it up.
Gram: Trys to make Rebel (and everyone else)think that she is still capable of doing things that Rebel’s parents say she can’t.
Moses: Get’s Rebel mad at times like when all he does is is video tape and he made her hold Tiger’s leash along with Pookie’s.
Pookie: Rarely gets Rebel mad like when he used the bathroom in the new house that Gram got .
Everyone else i need to read a little bit more to find out.
Viola has a somewhat negative affect on Rebel in various ways. First, she makes Rebel angry (through her owning a dog). And second , she creates problems for Rebel because Rebel has to take care of Tiger while she’s gone.

i think thats rebels happy to have found a boy thats taller than her that she could hang out with .. but somtimes he could get on her nerves.so we will have 2 see wat happens..=]
Oh, I agree with Seabstian Gram does have an affect on Rebel in a positive way, and I guess I didnt catch on to the fact that Gram does make her do things she normally would not do, like eating donuts. Rebel would not be able to do that around her parents.
MR. & MRS. DOLZYCKI:
Mr. & Mrs. Dolzycki do not really know rebel, so they have little effect on her. But they made her think about who the runner was that ran into her. (Even though they did not say it in the book) They didn’t make her do anything she wouldn’t normally do and they did not make her angry. They created problems by not calling the police. They didn’t scare her or make her feel uncomfortable. Mr. & Mrs. Dolzycki did not encourage her to do anything either. But I am pretty sure Rebel was thankful for the pastries they gave Moses and her, considering she was hungry.
TIGER:
Tiger is Violas dog, but Moses responsibility. Tiger makes Rebel think of Moses in a bad way, because he spends most of their walking time taking pictures, leaving Tiger for Rebel to take care of. Tiger makes Rebel pick up his poop which is something she did not want to do. He made her angry because he kept on getting the leashes tangled. This created problems for Rebel. At first when Rebel saw Tiger she was kind of scared about how enormous his size was. He is not very incouraging for Rebel to like Moses.
POOKIE:
Pookie is Rebels grandmothers beagle (dog). He makes Rebel wonder why she is the one taking care of him. He does really make her do anything she doesn’t want to do. But when he poops Rebel knows it is her responsibility so she has to pick it up. This makes her sort of angry. Pookie creates problems by barking at the man who thought they were in his yard. He doesn’t really scare Rebel or make her feel uncomfortable, I mean why would he, she is like 6 or 5 times his size. Since Pookie is just a dog he cant really encourage Rebel to do anything.
MOSES:
Moses has a great deal of affect on Rebel. He makes her think in so many ways. Like what she wants in a boy she will marry. He makes her pick up Tigers poop that is definitely not something she would do considering she is a rebel who refuses to do things others tell her to (even though she has grown out of it). He makes her angry by leaving her in charge of both dog while he takes pictures. He creates problems by having such a big imagination. Moses makes Rebel scared and feel uncomfortable by being a quicker thinker than her, and being able to realize things before her. He does not really encourage her to do anything but they make an incredible team. Also Rebel sort of likes him, or at least it seems that way.
VIOLA:
Viola and gram are very much alike. She does not really have much of an affect on Rebel as much as Gram though. She does, however, make Rebel think because she finds her to be quite out of the ordinary or eccentric. She does not make her do anything she wouldn’t normally do. Viola does not really make Rebel angry because she does not really know her. She does create problems by having a dog. Viola does not really scare her or make her feel uncomfortable. She does not encourage Rebel to do anything but when she encourages her grandson Moses it somehow ends up encouraging her.
GRAM:
Gram affects Rebel in many ways. Yes, she does make her think. Rebel wonders why is it that Pookie is her grandmothers dog but she is the one that’s intitled the job of “pooper scooper.” Gram does not really make Rebel do anything she would not normally do, because remember they are both “rebels.” Rebel gets upset one or two times about her grandmother 1) not telling her that Moses was 6 feet tall and 2) that she has to pick up Pookies poop! But she never really gets ANGRY! Gram and Rebel are much alike so she does not scare or make Rebel feel uncomfortable. Gram does however encourage Rebel (example: She encouraged her to come with her to the old house in the first place).
Moses makes rebel think, happy, and annoyed. As Rebel hang out with Moses, she thinks about her future mate. Rebel finally found someone who is taller than she is and she thinks Moses is very attractive. Moses makes Rebel happy because she found out that it was nice to walk with a tall guy. Moses makes Rebel annoyed because she has to hold both Tiger’s and Pookie’s leashes when they were walking. Moses had to use both hands to manage the camera. Rebel had to yell at Moses to help her get Tiger off of her.
Gram: makes her be able to do things she normally dosen’t do like, eat doughnuts for breakfast which she doesn’t normally at home.
Moses: makes her angery sometimes, for example when they were walking the dogs and he kept on video taping in sted of helping with the dogs.
Pookie and tiger:made her angry because they kept on crossing leashes during there walk.
Tiger:also scared her at first becuase he was so big then she found out that he is wimpy.

Pookie made Rebel mad because Pookie got the leashes tangeled together with Tigers leash. Also when Pookie was scratching on the door because Tiger ran off.
Gram: Gram makes Rebel happy, and do things that she would not normally do. For example, Gram brings desserts when she visits. Rebel’s mother wouldn’t buy those things for the house.
Moses: Moses makes Rebel both happy and angry. For example Moses is tall and looks nice, to Rebel of course. He appealed to her very nicely. Then his dog pooped on someones lawn and he did not want to clean it up, so Rebel had to do it. Also he just stood there while the dogs were barking and dragging Rebel.
Tiger: Tiger at first sight was scary for Rebel. After that when she found out about his fears she wasn’t scared anymore. Also, he angered her by tangling her up and pooping on the grass.
Pookie: Pookie agrivates Rebel when he was barking and when he tangled her up. He also angered her when he was constantly scratching on the door.
The Dolzyckis: The Dolzykis allow Rebel to do things she normally would not. For example they gave her a whole bag of pasteries and meat pies to eat.
Violet: I have not got to the part of the book witch contains her personality towards Rebel.
Pookie just simply makes Rebel furious. An example of this would be when Moses and her were walking. Pookie and Tiger kept getting tangled in each other’s leashes. As Rebel untangled their leashes, Pookie crossed Tiger to tangle their leashes again, which made Rebel angry.
Moses makes Rebel very angry at times, while at other times, he makes her think of her future. For example, a time when he makes Rebel angry was when he was videotaping everything while she had to carry both of the dog’s leashes. Moses makes Rebel think of her future because fits of the catorgories for a husband by being taller than her and having a personality similar to her’s.
Gram makes Rebel do something she wouldn’t normally do. Rebel likes hanging out with Gram. She lets Rebel do things her mom wouldn’t want her doing. For example, Gram lets Rebel eat doughnuts. Her mom doesn’t want Rebel to eat nutritionless things.
Gram makes Rebel do something that she wouldn’t normally do. For example, around her parents, Rebel wouldn’t eat Pizza, but with Gram she would. Gram has a positive affect on Rebel, because around her Rebel can do anything (well almost anything) that she wants.
Sorry, I’ve been spelling my name wrong the whole time.
Tiger:
At first Tiger made Rebel feel scared because of his massive size. At times him and Pookie would create problems for Rebel when she was walking both dogs. They would tangle up in each others leashes and get Rebel aggravated.
Moses:
Moses makes Rebel not feel bored and lonely while she’s at the house. He made her feel uncomfortable at first because at times he could process things faster than her.
Viola:
viola makes Rebel feel that neither her nor her grandson would be people that she would talk to.
Gram:
Gram lets Rebel do things she usually isn’t allowed to do like eat doughnuts and stuff like that.
In my opinion, Moses makes Rebel gaze into her future. For example, throughout the book, Rebel keeps mentioning about her type of husband, and the requirements he should adhere to. Moses fits into some of the categories, which trigers the thought of her adulthood. Moses sometimes shows the fustrated side of Rebel, which is another way he reflects part of who she is. More specifically, when Moses and Rebel were on a dog walk, Rebel had to handle both Pookie and Tiger, while Moses delt with his camera. Therefore, she got angry with him becuase she was doing double the work.
Mr.Moshe, i am a little confused on this whole blog entry. Can you please explain it in class, or give a hand-out? Thanks
Moses makes Rebel happy but then again other times he makes her mad. He makes her happy because she finally found someone to hang out with thats a boy, who is taller than her and shares the same interests. He makes her mad at times also. An example is when they took the dogs for a walk and he wasn’t paying attention to anything but his camera. Rebel was stuck walking both dogs and picking up their droppings. =)
Tiger affects Rebel negatively because he “goes to the bathroom” outside and since Moses doesn’t want to pick Tiger’s wastes up, Rebel picks it up with her little gloves and she is unhappy about it.
Moses affects rebel in a positive and negative way. For instance, Rebel thinks Moses is attractive because she rarely finds boys her age that are taller than her. He also affects her in a negative way because she gets mad at him when he makes her walk both Pookie and Tiger while he is taking pictures for his “movie.”
Gram lets Rebel do irregular things, things that Rebel’s parents usually wouldn’t let her. Gram affects Rebel in a positive way because she lets her do things that Rebel actually likes and craves. Gram is a good person in the story because she is nice to Rebel.
Well…Moses makes Rebel happy, because he’s taller than her, is funny, & has the same ideas as her 4 a mate. i think by the end of the book they will get 2gether or become friends!
Moses makes Rebel feel happy sometimes and mad others. An example for making her happy is when they were trying to pick which floor to sleep on and moses wanted her to sleep on the sam floor with him. An example for making her mad is when she had to hold both of the dogs while Moses was video tapping the dogs.
Mr. Moshe, like chantelle said, when is this due because i only read up to chp 2 and don’t have enough info write more than i did.
Moses makes Rebel mad. An example would be when they were walking the dogs. She had to hold both their leashes while he was taping the “scenes” that they were walking past. Also, when they went to the Dolzycki’s and got food she had to yell at him to hold Tiger’s leash so she could eat. The details might be a little off because i don’t remember the exact things they said. 🙂
Pookie:
Pookie makes Rebel feel aggravated at times because when she was walking Pookie and Tiger they both wanted to chase the man who robbed the Dolzikis and also the morning after when Rebel went downstairs and heard Pookie scratching the door.
when is this due, mr. moshe?
Gram lets Rebel do things her mother wuoldn’t do , like give her pizza. Rebel appreciates that . That’s why she likes to be around gram. Rebel also gets to be more free with gram. If it wasn’t for her, Rebel wuold be in Europe listening to her brothers play.
WELL MOSES MAKES REBEL A LITTLE AGRAVATED AT TIMES BECAUSE HE IS ALWAYS VIDEOTAPING SOMETHING WHEN THEY GO WALKING THE DOGS AND LEAVING HER WITH TWO LEASHES TO HANDLE. I HAVE TO READ THE REST OF THE STORY TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE CHARACTERS.
