B. Can the reader accept the characters as real people? Are they true to life?
1.Did you find yourself totally immersed in the world of the characters, or were you unable to fully envision their lives and circumstances? Explain.
My answer: I was able to envision their lives and circumstances because the author made the details and character’s situations so realistic. I could picture myself in her place at times. For example, when Rebel was walking the dogs with Moses, I could picture myself holding the leash and walking them along side Moses.
2.Which characters did you find the most compelling and/or relatable and why?
My answer: I found Rebel the most relatable because we sort of think the same. We both think about our future, spending our lives with a compatible mate, and what we look for in them, even if it is a little early. Also, we both like to do what we want when we want, and don’t like to be told what to do when we already know.
3. Are there any characters that seem to embody a kind of timelessness?
My answer: The characters I think that seem to embody a kind of timelessness are: Gram, Viola, and the Dolzyckis. They seem to know a lot about the past and seem to not grow any older.
4.Was there something about their manner or their views that felt familiar? Who and why?
My answer: Moses’s view of a career seems slightly familiar. Because he is very determined in what he does, and is willing to work hard for things he wants to accomplish. I feel the same way about school, with goals I want to accomplish as well.
I chose to post question B.
1. I kind of think that the characters could be real people, but the whole robbery thing and trying to catch them was kind of unreal if you know what I mean. An example of how they are like real people is that they live in regular houses with regular people and do regular things. It’s not very common that you see people running around trying to catch a robber.
2. The character that I thought I could relate the most to is Rebel. I feel like she relates to me beacuse she is like her own individual person, she is independent, and she likes to find things out for herself, which is how I am.
3. The characters that seem to embody a timelessness are Pookie, Tiger, Gram, Viola, and the Dolzycki’s. they seem to be timeless because they seem like they could be in any book.
4. I felt that I share some of the same views as Gram. For example, she didn’t belive at first that Rebel and Moses weren’t making the whole story up. You see, I am the type of person that knows how my friends or family react to certain things and if they change the way they react to things, I may not belive them at first.
Mr Moshe, i wasn’t sure if we were supposed to post all the answers for one letter or if we were only supposed to post 1 answer for one letter so I just posted all of them. It can’t hurt I guess.
QUESTION C:
1.) Describe two events or episodes that the character grew from.
Rebel grew from the burglary of her grandma’s rented house and from not being able to go on the caravvaning trip with her family because her not being able to go caravvaning through Europe with her family led to her grandmother volunteering to take her the next summer but she would have to behave all year in order to go and that could be her motive for good behavior all year. And the burgalary incident taught her responsibility about what to do when you are suspicious of a crime and how you shouldn’t do everything yourself.
2.) Yes i did become involved in the emotions of the characters because when Moses and Rebel thought the wallet was stolen, I was very upset because how can you have one piece of evidence for a mystery, and misplace it! When they found it in the closet, I was just as relieved as Rebel was.
3.) Yes because the author gives such depth to the characters. One of Rebel’s strengths is that she knows what she wants in life and I think that that will take her places. One of her weaknesses though is that she is extremely hard headed and stubborn and that she likes to do her own thing. That can be good sometimes but I don’t think it is a nice quality to have.
4.) Whan the Dolzyckis store got robbed and Moses got a picture of the thief, if I was him i would have given that part of the tape to the police or I would have erased it and forgotten about it because the thief only stole a candy bar. But if I went on investigating like he and Rebel did, when I found out the bills were counterfit, I would have immediately turned the wallet and jacket over to the police. I would not have been brave enough to stayup and wauit for them to try and break in to get back their wallet.
D. What does it mean for a character to be static or dynamic?
The static characters would include Tiger, Pookie, Gram, Viola, Mister and Mrs. Dolyzkis and the few characters that came to rent rooms. The author talks about them and every now and then they would appear in the story and help reach the climax but were not given major parts. The dynamic charaters would be Rebal and Moses. They play a part in every chapter and enhance as induviduals.
The similarity and diffrances between the dynamic and static characters are that they are both needed to explain the plot of the story. Although the static characters may have only one sence in the book it can explain alot about whats going on. For example, when Moses called Mrs. Dolyzkis and asked about the red smudge on the counterfit money she had given them even more evidance on finding out who the counterfitters were.
C: 1. Question: Describe two events or episodes that the character grew from.
Answer: Two events/episodes that the characters grew from are the part where Rebel met Moses and the part where the theives broke into the house. In the first one, the characters grew because Rebel finally met a guy that was taller than her and she felt happy and more grown up. The second one, the characters grew because Rebel finally realized that it was okay to be scared and so did Moses.
2. Question: Did you become involved in the emotions of the characters? Give example(s).
Answer: Yes, I did get involved in the emotions of the characters. Whenever one of the characters got sad or nervous, I got the same way. For example, when the theives broke in, Moses and Rebel were both scared. When I was reading it, I was getting scared too and was anxious to know what was going to happen next.
3. Question: Does the reader come to know the characters as individuals with unique strengths and weaknesses? Give examples of both.
Answer: Yes, the reader deffinately comes to know the characters as individuals with unique strengths and weaknesses. For example, I see Rebel as a fun person, but I also see that she shouldn’t be so mean and should let people help her more. Also, for example, I see Moses as a very laid back person, but I also see that he needs to have more fun in his life.
4. Question: Would you have acted in the same manner as the main character in any given event or episode? Describe an event and what you would have done?
Answer: Yes, I would have reacted the same way in an event/episode. For example, lets pick the part where Rebel and Moses are arguing about whether or not they should call the police. Rebel thinks they shouldn’t because they are so close to solving it themselves. I would have done/said the same thing because if I already solved that much, I would want to solve the rest without any help.
C1- When Rebel said her and gram could so and stay with aunt viola before going to Italy or where ver.l That is the only real reason she ever met Moses and helped him stop the crook.
When the counterfeiter ran into Moses and Rebel and Moses got a shot of his counterfeit bill with his video camera. Thats why Moses’s camera was stolen, which led to them gatting involved and solving the mystery.
I would have disa gree with those of you who say that Moses is a dynamic character. Althogh I partly agree with Jai. I think that Moses is a primary character and not secondary but I dont think he’s dynamic. Were given alot of detail about Moses but only detail. Moses is involved with Rebel and the events throughout the story but he dosnt grow and his feelings and opinoins dont realy change.
D: WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE STATIC OR DYNAMIC?
………………………………………………………………………………………………
Characters such as Viola, the Dolyzkis and Rebels family are static. These characters are static because they are minor and we don’t learn much about them. For example Rebel’s mother would be static because all we know about her is that she is petite and very over protective. Other than these details we don’t learn anything more about her, she doesn’t grow or progress. The same thing happens with the other characters in the novel.
Rebel is the only real dynamic character in the book. She is dynamic because changes and progresses throughout the story unpredictably. She is also dynamic because she only progresses she doesn’t regress. Rebel grows by learning from the events in the book. She also is fully involved in all events that occur.
The static characters in the book are usually mainly in only one part of th book. The dynamic character in the book is in the whole book. We learn a couple details about static characters when there first introduced to us and nothing more after that. While your learning more and more about the character throughout the story
Teresa, I totally agree with you because she did grow from that conversation with Mrs.Dolzycki and it made her think more about herself and “true love”!!!!
(A.Quest.2)
The other people in the story motivated the main characters to behave as they did because those people act a certain way and the main characters want to act the same way to be cool like them.
B1) I didn’t find myself totally in their lives because the book is boring. So I couldn’t fully keep along with what they were saying. I also couldn’t fully envision what was happening in their lives because in areas of the book there was so much going on that you had to read it over a few times to figure out what it meant.
Yes I agree with you Taylor. Everything that happened in the book can happen to a real person in real life.
An example of the main character growing was the conversation with Rebel and Mrs. Dolzyci about true love.
Question C
Question C:
An example of the main growing is when Rebel asks Mrs. Dolzyci about true love.
C.
1. In one event Rebel grew when a person broke into their house.The other event is when the cops caught the counterfeiters.
2. No, because i would have just called the cops.
3. Yes, one example is rebel, she can make up good plans but they don’t follow through.
4. I wouldn’t have done what moses and rebel did. I would have just called the cops.
——DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR LAST NAME WHEN YOU POST.
I didn’t know I had to post all my answers to the letter, so I’m going to post number one again. I’m not going to include Moses, now that I know he isn’t a main character.
A. Who is/are the main character(s)?
1) Rebel Keeling is one of the main characters. She has auburn hair and she is very tall for her age. When she was in sixth grade, she was the tallest kid in her class. A quote from the book is “She was only five feet ten, but that was eight inches taller than her youngest brother, Wally, who was still growing.”
2) Pookie motivates Rebel to behave as she does sometimes. Rebel loves Pookie, but she got annoyed when he started barking at the middle of the night. Mom motivates Rebel to behave as she does. Mom is always worried about Rebel and doesn’t allow her to be free in my opinion. Rebel behaves more different than her family. All her brothers play musical instruments while Rebel doesn’t play anything. She is the out-going type.
3) Rebel has some internal traits that make her Rebel. Some internal traits include honest, friendly, and communicative. Only people who are close to Rebel knows that she is honest, friendly, and communicative. Rebel likes talking with Moses and Gram. She talks with Moses honestly and friendly.
4)Rebel has some external traits. They include rebellious, determined, and open-minded. Rebel is rebellious because her first words were “No.” She refused to go to kindergarden and play the piano. She insisted that she tied her own shoes when she was little. Rebel is determined to solve the mystery with Moses. Rebel is not afraid to voice her opinion. That’s why open-minded is an external trait of hers.
Can the reader accept the characters as real people? Are they true to life?
Yes,everything that has in the book can happen to somebody in real life. The characters in the story have realistic personalities and everyday lives that can happen to anybody. The author makes the book realistic because the arthor uses scenes that people do everday. For example the author creates scenes where Rebel and Moses are dog walking and Moses taking pictures of everything . These are real life examples that any ordinary person might do.
Mr. Moshe, my mom won’t let me make a yahoo ID and I don’t already have one. I don’t know what the characeterization chart looks like. Can you or someone help me. Please and thank you
Question C:
1) In my opinion I think that Rebel develops/grows during the scene when she asked Mrs. Dolzycki about love at first sight. Another was when she met Moses. She finally met a guy taller than her and didn’t feel so uncomfortable.
2) I do believe that I became involved with the characters emotions. During the scene when a group of guys broke into the house, I got nervous because I kept on thinking “What is going to happen next?” (That was really the onlt good part.)
3) After a while I do think that the reader comes to know the characters as individuals with unique strengths and weaknesses. For example, Moses strengths is that he’s a great horror movie maker but his weakness is that his father puts him down.
4) I don’t know if I would have acted the same way. I would have to be there.
Also Moses has brown hair and brown eyes.
my bad I forgot it.
Question A…
What are the physical descriptions of the main characters?
The physical descriptions of Rebel are shes 5 ft. 10, petite, and always the tallest girl in her classes.
The physical descriptions of Moses are hes 6 ft. 6,and has really big feet(size 16 in shoes).
Mr. Moshe I agree with April, i didnt get your instrustions so im just gonna post one of them because thats what most of everyone else did.
D-What does it mean to be a static or dynamic character? To be a dynamic character you are a main character like Rebel. She grows and changes and the novel is based upon her. On the other hand to be a static character means you’re not really mentioned alot in the story perhaps Rebel’s family members because you don’t really hear much from them.They don’t really have a great impact on the story,what they do will not effect the story.
question b ~~~Can the reader accept the characters as real people? Are they true to life? yes i think that they are because the character act like real people would . . For example, in the book they work together & do things that most people do. Things in the book are very believable. In the book, the characters are very true to life, so yes, its very easy for the reader to accept the characters!!!!!1
I am answering to Question D
_____________________________________________________________
I believe that Moses is a very static character because in almost every event that he is in he always wants to stick to the same thing he always does. Either call the cops or stay out of trouble.
Rebel on the other hand is the most and pretty much only dynamic character in the story. She is almost always changing her ideas and the way she thinks is just out of there. It’s really kind of crazy the things that she does. Even crazier is the reasons she does it.
Moses and Rebel are both similar, but in some cases she couldn’t be any different. For instance, when Rebel and Moses just found out that they had, in their possession counterfeit money, the first thing that Moses wanted to do was to call the cops and have them figure it out. Rebel, however, wanted to investigate a little bit on the money. Even though they differ on some key things there were times when they felt the same. Such as the time when they Both agreed that they could go and stake out some of the clubs out in the U-Dub District.
A.
1) What are the physical descriptions of each of the main characters? Use quotes/details from the text to support your answer.
Rebel Keeling is one of the main characters. She has auburn hair and she is very tall for her age. When she was in sixth grade, she was the tallest kid in her class. A quote from the book is “She was only five feet ten, but that was eight inches taller than her youngest brother, Wally, who was still growing.”
Moses Adams is another main character. He is very tall, six feet six to be precise. A quote from the book is “Thick brown hair, brown eyes behind wire-rimmed glasses, a good strong nose and chin, teeth that might have had recent orthodontic assistance, so perfect were they.”
Do we do all of the questions under a letter or just one of them?
For example letter A has 5 questions, if we pick to do letter A do we answer all 5 questions or just 1?
QuEsTIoN B—-
Yes I do think that the reader can accept the characters as real people, and yes, I think that they are true to life. Also, in the book, I was a little immersed in the world of the characters, but then again I was a little unable to fully see thier lives and circumstances because the novel doesn’t give that much detail on when it took place, where it took place, and what has happened in the past. And I think that if I knew those answers, I would be able to understand the book a little more.Also, the character I found both most compelling amd most relatable is Rebel. In also my opinion, I don’t think that any character seemed to have a thing of ‘timelessness’. And again, I also don’t think that any of their manners or views are similar to my own because I personally think that everybody has different point of views and differnet morals.
I agree with you Christian. I definitely would’ve done the same thing.
Mr. Mose were we supposed to answer all the questions to a letter or only one of them?
Question C: Does the main character develop or grow as a result of the incidents in the story?
Answers:
C: Yes, Rebel did grow as a result of the incidents in the story.
1.: One event she grew from was the counterfeiters breaking into her house and her having to testify in court. This taught her not to take matters as serious as this into her own hands. Another event was when Rebel went to help her grandmother renovate the old house. This helped her to gain her mother’s trust before she decided to handle the counterfeiters with Moses.
2.:One example of when I felt involved in the emotions of the characters was when Moses “lost” his camera(It was actually stolen). I could relate to that feeling because when I lose something as valuable as that I feel the same way. One example was when my cell phone was stolen, only thing is that I never got it back.
3.: Yes, the reader does come to know the characters as individuals with strengths and weaknesses. For example, Rebel is someone who seems independent it can be a strength in her because she doesn’t have to ask others for help on just about everything like when she was younger she wanted to do things on her own. Moses has a weakness of not listening to authority until it’s too late like when he took too long to call the police to report the counterfeiters.
4.: In the event of the counterfeiters, I would not have acted in the same manner as Rebel did. I would have not tried to set a trap for them, I would have called the police sooner.
Sorry Mr.Moshe, but I’ve been spelling my name wrong. It’s spelled Sebastian
C
4. Would you have acted in the same manner as the main character in any given event or episode? Describe an event and what you would have done.
An epsiode where I would have acted differently was when the robber stole from the store. Instead of just openly let the robber pass me, I would’ve at least been a barricade, and block his way. And when I got to the Dolzycki’s shop, I would have called the police. I don’t think that Rebel should have try to surmise who the theif was.
D: What does it mean for a character to be static or dynamic?
1. The static characters in the Rebel are the Dolzyski’s, Gram, Viola, Pookie, and Tiger. The author introduces you to them, but doesn’t exactly develop them into full grown characters.
2. The dynamic characters are Rebel and Moses. They grow as individuals throughout the story. They develop into more detailed characters that mature.
3. The static and dynamic characters, in the book Rebel, are both similar and different. Both kinds of characters are necessary in order for complete novel. They manage to support each other. However, they are completely different. Static characters are minor, and only add detail. Where as dynamic characters are the bases for a story, and are changing individuals.
A#1
What are the physical descriptions of each of the main characters? Use quotes/details from the text to support your answer.
The physical description of Rebel is that she is tall, very tall for her age, and she is not very girly. Moses physical description is that he is super tall for his age and likes to film creepy things because he wants to be a horror film maker.
C. Does the main character develop or grow as a result of the incidents in the story?
1. Rebel grows from the first meeting with Moses because she has to adjust in a way so Moses would like her (since she thinks he’s attractive) and she grows when she finds out what “first love” is from the Dolzickys because she is curious and she wants to know if she’ll have it.
2. Yes, I became involved in the emotions of the characters because the author makes the story so that we worry for the main characters and the feelings of Rebel and Moses together make us feel happy and sad, depending on the mood.
3. Rebel’s weakness is boys. She doesn’t know how to act next to a boy because she gets nervous, especially when she thinks he’s attractive. Her strength is dogs. She knows how to treat dogs and how to handle them. Moses’ strength is that he’s tall and strong so he can protect himself (in the case of an emergency) and his weakness is girls and how to act next to them.
4. The part where Rebel stays home instead of going to look for Tiger in the middle of the night is wrong, (I think so). I would have went to look for Tiger even if it’s at night because if she would have found him, then maybe Moses would have began to like her since she was brave enough to look for the dog in the pitch black night.
I don’t understand questions 3,4, and 5 under B. Can someone please help? Thanks.
B. Can the reader accept the characters as real people? Are they true to life?
Yes,everything that has happened to the characters can actually happen in real life,and the characters seem to have realistic personalitys and traits;none of them are perfect at anyeverything and none of them can do magic or stuff like that.I did find my self immersed in their lives in a way,and i could easily imagine what its like for Rebel to always have to listen to her siblings pratice their instruments,or how Moses and Rebel get teased about being tall;the text is pretty descriptive. The characters I found kind of relatable to were Viola and Gram,because my parents and my sister ususally don’t think I can succeed in things,but I think I can.Viola and Gram also seem sort of timeless because they’re…..well old and they still move and work and live with lots of energy.Their manners aren’t really familiar to me though.
D. What does it mean for a character to be static or dynamic?
1. The Dolzyski’s ,Gram,Viola,and Rebel’s family are static characters, because the writer tells about them , but you really don’t know a whole lot about them. Like gram you know she is Rebels grandmother,but you don’t know how she looks or feels in the story. The book is not based on the static characters.
2. Moses and Rebel are dynamic characters. The story is based on their adventures ,and what they do in the story. Also you know more about them like that Rebel is independent ,and likes to be rebellious, and that moses is very artisitic.
3. The dynamic and static characters in Rebel are the same because they both are needed to tell about what is happening in the story ,and so the story seems more realistic. The Static and dynamic characters are also diffrent. In Rebel the story is really just about Rebel and Moses ,and what happens to them in the story. The static characters are just there to make the story better.
B. Can the reader accept the characters as real people? Are they true to life?
Yes, I can accept the characters as real people. This is because the things they do and the place they live in are very realistic which allows me to accept the characters as real people.
*The things they do- Rebel and Moses walked the dogs, which is what a normal person does.
*The place they live in- While Rebel was with Gram, the houses and things arround them were ordinary- front lawns, sidewalks, mean neighbors, trees…
B–Can the reader accept the characters as real people? Are they true to life? Yes. I think this because the characters do things as real people do. For example, in the book the work together & do things that most people do. This leads the reader to think that this can really happen. Things happen in the book that are very believeable. In the book, the characters are very true to life, so yes, its very easy for the reader to accept the characters.
—— () -1 point – you posted your last name – that’s a nono
April,
You answer all the questions(A,B,C and D) on paper. You post only one of your answers to the blog. you bring in your handwritten answers on October 25th, 2006. Hope this helps you!
B.Can the reader accept the characters as real people? Are they true to life?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yes, the reader can accept the characters as real people, and yes they are true to life. I believe this because of the way everyone handled situations, like”normal people”. An example of this is when Tiger ran away and everyone got worried that was “normal”. I found myself sort of immersed in the world of the characters because I felt that I could relate to them, and actually understand what is happeneing in their lives. I found the characters Rebel and Moses the most relatable because of their attitudes and the things they did in the book. The characters Tiger and Pookie embodied a kind of timelessness, because you couldn’t really tell what they were thinking and or when they were going to do something. The manner and views of Rebel felt familiar because of the things she thought about and the way she handled things. For example she thinks alot into the future, I do that alot also, and Rebel does things people tell her to do even though she really doesn’t want to…I can also relate to that…ALOT!
This is all my oppinion I think that the characters can be real people…others might not, I guess it all depends on how you look at the book!
Which character(s) are dynamic? Explain using details from the text to support your answer.
Moses and Rebel are the dynamic characters in this story. You know many things about them. You know Moses’ shoe size and his height. Rebel you know that she is daring and very tall compared to other girls.
4.Would you have acted in the same manner as the main character in any given event or episode?
No. Like when the robbery happened i would have called the cops first then i would’ve looked around to see what the robber stole. I then would write a report. I think that was stupid of them not calling the cops right then. I would have just let the police handle the situation
Mr.Moshe, did you want us to post ALL of either questions A,B,C or D? Or did you want us to post one of the questions within A,B,C,or D? Your instructions said one of the five questions and I wasn’t exactly sure what that meant so I didn’t post my answer yet.
Nicole,
Proof read your posts before you post to the blog next time.
Look over the rubric to see how this will effect your grade.
Sabrina,
Pick an event in which a character had a certain reaction that you would not have…Describe how you would have reacted given the same circumstances.
QuEsTiOn C…-#3;
-Yes, ReBeL;
her strenghts are… being confidence, a leader, & wanting to do a lot of cool things. Her weaknesses are… when, she is with Moses, & around her mother & family!!!
Question C…
Two events that the character grew from was in my opinion the conversation with Mrs. Dolzyski (although it was very small) and the whole mystery where someone tried to break into the house.
I did not become very involved with the emotions of the characters because the author did a bad job of showing them.
The reader does get to know the characters as individuals. I came to find that Rebel is boring, but outspoken. I came to fing that Moses is artistic and kind of cocky.
I would not act like any of the characters in any event in the book.
