Week Two – Question #2 – The Law Question
“The law is hard, it is the law.”
-
Why is this phrase repeated so often by Master Bashcroft?
-
How does he use its message in his interactions with the community?
-
What does its use tell us about how he sees himself?
Bashcroft repeats that frequently throughout the book to make himself look higher and superior. He wants the people to believe his explanations are plausible for the ‘deeds’ he does. This shows his character is vain, and very minipulitive. [sp?]
“THE LAW iS HARD, iT iS THE LAW.”
MASTER BASHCROFT REPEATS THiS PHRAS A LOT BECAUSE HE TRULY FEELS THAT iT iS TRUE. HE iS THE LAW, SO iF THE LAW iS HARD, THEN HE TOO iS HARD. HE USES THiS WiTH THE COMMUNTiTY PRETTY MUCH AS AN EXCUSE TO HAVE POWER OVER THEM. iT EXPLAiNNS THAT HE SEES HiMSELF VERY HiGHLY AND POWERFUL.
That phrase is repeated so many times by Master Bashcroft because he beleaves it. I think he beleaves that since the law is hard he must to be hard when he inforces it because hes the reeve. He uses the message to interact with the communuity because he has to inforce it. Its use tells use that he thinks hes powerful and incharge.
Every time Bashcroft wants to do something to help himself and damage others he always uses his phrase of “the law is hard but it is the law” to justify his actions. And since he always wants to do what he wants, Bashcroft uses it repeatedly. In his community, Bashcroft is like a dictator who always does what he wants. Even though pretty much eveyone knows how bossy he is, Bashcroft tries to make them believe that what he does is necessary to follow the law. With this excuse he makes a dictatorship of the community. This relationship with the community tells us that he believes that everyone should give into him and do whatever he wants them to do. It also shows us that he is selfish and believes himself king of his community.
“The law is hard, but it is the law.”
Why is this phrase repeated so often by Master Bashcroft? Master Bashcroft feels that it gives him authority, even though he is the authority, it seems that he uses it to feed his ego. Also he says it to remind others and himself that he has the power and that he is willing to go to extremes if he has to, in order to do the right thing.
How does he use its message in his interactions with the community?
He uses the Law quote, to let the community know that they are under his control and that they can’t say or do anything againts his word.
What does its use tell us about how he sees himself?
Bashcroft sees himself as a ruler that likes to be in control and control everyone under any circumstances.
“The law is hard, but it is the law” is repeated so often because that is what the reeve beleives. He thinks that he is the law so he should abide by it. Yes, he uses this to interact with is community because he beleives it is the law. It shows us that he thinks he is the law.
“Dura lex, sed lex. The law is hard, but it is the law. Since I am the law, I must be hard.”
Master Bashcroft uses this phrase so often because he is the city reeve and he wants to enfrorce regulations so that people will understand the importance of them and follow them. He uses its message in his interactions with the community by telling people it when he introduces himself and when he shows that everybody has to listen to him or they’ll be punished in some sort of way. This tells us that he sees himself as the mayor of the city and the most important person that people are under control of.
“The law is hard, but it is the law”
The phrase is repeated often by Master Bashcroft because he is the city reeve and he is the one who enfoeces the law.
He uses its message in his interactiions with the community so they would know why he is allowed to do the things that he does and why they can’t try to defy him.
The use of the phrase tells us that Master Bashcroft is a person who seems to find self gratification in saying the phrase often and fells that he can do whatever he wants because he feel that he is the law.
“The law is hard, it is the law.”
This phrase is repeated so often by Master Bashcroft because it is his job to enforce the laws, in which is changed at his discretion.
He uses its message in his interactions with the community because it is his explanation of why he is allowed to do what he is going to do. It is also why he cannot be questioned for it.
The use of this phrase tells us that he sees himself as the highest authority. He thinks of himself as the superiority so he can do whatever he wants because he IS the law.
The law is hard, it is the law.”
Why is this phrase repeated so often by Master Bashcroft?
It gives Master Bashcroft an exuse to be unjust.
How does he use its message in his interactions with the community?
He does whatever he wants to and is very mean about it because he “is the law.”
What does its use tell us about how he sees himself?
He sees himself above everyone else and that he can pretty much do whatever because he i sin charge.
“The law is hard, it is the law.” : Master Bashcroft uses this phrase a lot through out the story because he is the city reeve and he must keep the city under control. When he uses this phrase within the community, he is letting the towns people know that he is very serious about everything that he does. Also when he uses this phrase, he thinks of himself as a king that has to inforce the law whenever someone is acting up.
I agree with Sebastian beacause I think the reeve sees no one over him so he should be ruler. What he needs is somebody to put him in his place. I think that everybody should be accountable to someone. That is just me but anyway back to the point of me agreeing with Sebastian. To me he is right 99.7% right!
When I hear Master Bashcroft say : ” the law is hard, but it is the law!” is that even if you don’t like the law it is hard and he is there to enforce it. According to him he is the law and he must be tough because he is the law, but to me he is only being a bully to the towns people but that is going off topic. The way he uses it with his interactions with the towns people is that whenever he sees something that is “injust”( more like not what he wants to see) is that he pulls out that over-played phrase and slap them with sometype of harsh thing onto them ( drawing conclusions right here; it looks like the towns people dispise him but yet at the same time are scared because they don’t know waht will happen to them for their injust act) { word of the blog/day:INJUST! Whats yours!}. But anyway before I was rudley interupted by (SEMAJ, lol inside joke) I was explaing on how the reeve uses that law against the towns people. Finally, this tells us that the reeve sees himself as an all powerful man who can inflict pain upon the “INJUST” whenever he feels like. It also tells us that he is self-centered because onse again, he quotes that he is the law and he now must be hard because don’t forrget………… he is the “LAW”. This is how the reeve thinks that he is the law.
Master Bashcroft said “The law is hard, it is the law.” because he is the city’s reeve. He belives he has to be tough on everyone because the law is supposed to be hard just like him. Brashcroft is the law in the city so that is way he takes advantage of people and takes everything from them. He says “The law is hard, it is the law.” when he is about to do something to someone, like in the story when he was about to go into Thorstens house and take everything he said it. Master Bashcroft sees himself superior than everyone , and therefore with greater arthorty than everyone else. he pretty much sees himself as the king or president of the city and can do what ever his heart desires, just because he represents the law .
THANK YOU JUDLiNE=]
“The law is hard, it is the law.”
This phrase is repeated so often by Master Bashcroft because he believes since he is the city reeve, he too, must be hard. Master Bashcroft also says this saying many times, because he wants an excuse for being cold-blooded. He uses its message in his interactions with the community by using the phrase as a cover-up to treat the community with disrespect and hellish. His motto tells us that he sees himself as the ruler of the city and he can do anything that he pleases.
Rachel, I agree with your comment because Master Bashcroft was obssessed with people “understanding that the law was hard” I think I understood what he meant the FIRST time he said it but he continued to go on and on about him having to be hard.
“The law is hard, but it is the law, and since I’m the law, I must be hard”
This quote is repeated so much by Master Bashcroft because it is his way of showing that he has power over everyone else in Fulworth. He is the city reeve, which is like the head of all local authorities. Since he is the head of the authorities, he belives that he is the head of all the people too. For example, when he decides to put the apothecary on house arrest, he said that because he is the law he must be hard but in reality, he was a greedy man, wanting to keep everything for himself. Another example is when he said to Master Thorston, after got a few peices of gold, that because he is the law he must have all of the gold in the house. He used his power to get what he wanted and when he did’nt get what he wanted(the gold) he decided to take it by force. During the course of the book I realized that Master Bashcroft was not there as the city reeve to help the people of Fulworth, but to protect his own selfish needs.
The law is hard, it is the law.”
I personally, was annoyed at Master Bashcroft because he always sadi that phrase. I think he emphasizes it so much because he wants people to know what his excuse is for being bossy and a sort of dictator. Since the law is strict, and he rules the law, he can be strict. Its sort of his saying to the community to allow himself to be ruler. I think he is a very pompous, rude, mayor who sees himself higher than anyine else.
“The law is hard, it is the law.”
The phrase is repeated so often by Master Bashcroft to make it crystal clear that he is the boss around here, and it’s a fair warning that he will be tough. I also think of it as a way of telling himself that he can’t become soft under any conditions since the law doesn’t faulter itself. By using the message in his interactions with the community, he’s basically saying that he treats everything with the most strict views. I find it as a threatening sort of phrase. It makes me think that he sees himself as a real high-and-mighty person. “The law is hard, I am hard, and that’s that,” is the vibe I get from him every time I read him saying that.
“The law is hard, but it is the law, and since I am the law, I must be hard”
Master Bascroft repeats this phrase so often because he thinks of himself as the law. The phrase says the law must be hard and he considers him as the law which makes him feel that he too must be hard.
The phrase is self-explanatory
It tells us that he thinks he is the ruler of everything in town and every one should follow what he says. At least that’s what I think.
“THE LAW IS HARD AND HE IS THE LAW” MEANS THAT MASTER BASHCROFT CONSIDERS HIMSELF THE LAW. THE LAW IS OBVIOUSLY HARD SO0 THAT IS TO WHAT HE THINKS OF HIMSELF. HARD. HE USES THIS MESSAGE BY DOING MEAN THINGS AND PUNISHMENTS TO PEOPLE. ITS KIND OF LIKE AN EXCUSE FOR HIM. “THE LAW IS HARD, AND HE IS THE LAW” IS JUST HIS WAY OF SAYING TOO BAD IN A WAY. IT TELLS US THAT HE SEES HIMSELF ALL IN POWER. HE WANTS THE COMMUNITY TO UNDERSTAND THAT THEYRE LIVING UNDER HIS RULE AND NO ONE ELSES.
Esteban R. P2,
What you said is exactly what I thought, I agree with you 100%. It’s exactly what I was trying to say. Also, I think it is AWSOME that you were able to end your response with the quote, that this entire discussion question is about…”The law is hard, and he is the law.”
The phrase “The law is hard, it is the law,” is repeated by Master Bashcroft often because it is something he truly believes. He thinks of himself as the law and believes that the law is hard. This phrase basically means “The law is the LAW and it is hard, no matter what.” He believes that if something is the law then it should be followed. Master Bashcroft uses the message of this phrase while interacting with the community, to inform them of his authorities. He tells them “The law is hard, but it is the law. Since I am the law, I must be hard.” When he says this, he is referring to himself as the law because he is a reeve and works for the officials. The way the phrase “The law is hard, it is the law,” is used by Master Bashcroft tells us that he is boastful of his job and thinks that just because he is a reeve, that he is able to boss the community around and tell them what to do.
In my opinion, Master Bashcroft does not seem as if he is a nice person. Also, people that use their careers to brag and control others, really do not deserve their position as a reeve, doctor or any other job. Just because you may have authority, does not mean you should take advantage of it and hurt others or create unnecessary conflict and problems. My opinions are all based on the fact that in a second all of that power can be gone and everything you did before will still be there. Maybe, if you hurt someone while in power, you don’t need them then; but when you lose that power you MAY need that same person that you hurt before. I highly doubt that person will want to help you after whatever you put them through.
DO YOU AGREE?
“The law is hard, it is the law.”
This phrase is reapeted often by Master Bashcroft, the city reeve, because he believes that the law is hard, and since he is the law, then he too must be hard. He uses its message in his interactions with the communty in order to be able to do cruel and mean punishments to the people, and to have an excuse for his reasoning. Its use tells us that Bashcroft sees himself as the ultimate authority over the land. It also tells us that he sees himself as the most powerful of all the people, and that he thinks it’s his obligation to be hard on the people, because the law is hard, and he is the law.
