Tell me what your experience was like from the moment you saw the book for the first time to when we finished it.
- What were your first thoughts on seeing the name of the book?
- What expectations did it raise?
- How did the story meet, change, or dash those expectations?
My first thoughts on seeing the name of the book was that is was going to be a book about a wordless book that you would have to read magically.
It raised the expectation that there was going to be a lot of magic in it. Especially since the cover was quite mysterious looking.
The story passed my expectations because it was more interesting than I thought. It was exciting at many points, like when Thorston came back from the “dead” and when Damian turned into a coin. Those were things I never would’ve expected.
well at first i thought it was going to be one of thoose childish stories meant for kids who have wild and vivid imaginations and have some cheesy lines like ” i am throston the villian here and i will eat you alive” or some weird thing like that. but The book itself…was kinda…blah. it was like 462984 times better then rebel, and easier to understand then the time traveller but…it wasnt that great. I would perfer a book with more action and more graphic things…like his head got severed form his body, the body collapsed after several mins, the blood still oozing from the neck. but this is middle school so thats not gonna happen. BUT ANYWAYS. all in all the book was meant more for 6th graders and Edgar Allen Poe is cooler then Avi =]
but Avi is a decent wirtter.
The name of the book for me, sounded very weird. This led me to think that the book would also be weird and dumb.I also thought the book would be boring. My expectations changed because the book was actually good, and some parts were exciting while others were dramatic and full of terror.
when I first saw the book i thought it wasn’t going to be like the year of the hangman. I thought it was going to be a dumb book, since I never liked Fantasy books. The book raised alot It actually caught my attention since again I don’t like fantasy book yet this is one of the books I really liked. At the end,is when it really dashed into a suspense kinda ending.
WHEN FiRST SEEiNG THE BOOK, i THOUGHT iT WAS GOiNG TO BE ABOUT MAGiC, AND MAYBE JUST MAYBE iT WOULD ACTUALLY BE iNTERESTiNG. i WAS WRONG. i DiDN’T LiKE THiS BOOK AT ALL. i FOUND iT BORiNG, AND i HONESTLY DiDNT UNDERSTAND iT.
My first thoughts about the book were how can this be a good book its called The Book With Out Words common does that sound good?Later in the book it got better and better so I guess I was wrong about the book. The book met those expectations because there was magic, suprises and a talking bird.
My intial thought on Avi’s book was that it was going to be about a wordless book. I came to this conclusion because the actual book itself did have words in it, therefore it had to be about another book. My expectations rised as I realized many different characters would compete for ownership of the book without words. In the end, the fantasy did meet my expectations, because it was sort of what I predicted was going to happen.
My first thoughts of the book were that it was gonna be easy and possibly a little more interesting then the other ones. The expectations it raised for me is there will be magic and it will be a good book. The story met those expectations because there was magic and it was a good book to me.
Seeing the title gave me the thought of a midevil time period. My expectations were low I really didnt think it was going to be a good book. My later oppinoin on the book was WoW this is a great book. The book was great because it had a really solid storyline with a suprising ending.
Actually, my first impression of the book was hmm”finally a non-boring book”(exlcuding freak the mighty). The expectations that had risen were that it was alot better than i thought it would be. It was actually interesting and made me want to keep reading. My wxpectations did not change as the book went on.
At first, when I first saw the cover and the name of the book, I thought ‘Oh Gosh! Another boring book like all the others that we have read!’ So I wasn’t excited AT ALL about reading it. But then, after we really got into the book, it was kinda OK. Then, it got really interesting and I kept wanting to read more to see where it would lead. So all in all, I ended up liking the book, even though I thought I would hate it at first.
When I heard the title of the book I could immediately tell that it was going to involve some kind of magic. Then I thought that it would be ok, not the best but decent. My expectations of it was a story with some kind of adventure or mystery. When I read the book, the story didn’t exactly reach my expectations for it. Most of the story only took place in Thorston’s house. It also didn’t provide much suspense except when Thorston came back to life and died again. But in the middle it did start to get interesting, along with some suspense.
When I first saw the title of the book i thought it was going to be interesting. I can say that when I read the title, I picked up the book to see if there were actually no words in it. By looking at the cover and the title I thought it was going to be an interesting book. After reading the book, it did meet my expectations. I thought it was a really good book. I could visualize every part of the book. I defanitely want to read more books like this.
From my first look at the cover of “The Book Without Words” I assumed that the book would be about magic and fantasy, the couldron and eerie atmospherre gave it away. Plus a couple years ago I read his book Crispin, so I already liked his writing. After the summary for the book, it seemed pretty interesting. The beginning was very captivated it made you want to read the rest of the book. But towards the middle it slowed down a bit. It was kind of like an…an elevator. It got exciting, then slowed down, and then went back up. I have to admit the ending was a little dissapointing. It was kind of a boring ending. It was a little too predictable, evil dies, mysterious helper is put to rest, the heros walk unharmed…well except for Damian.
I wasn’t sure what to think about when I heard about a book entitled “The Book Without Words”. I thought, “that’s odd: ‘A book without words’? How do read it if there are no words? Maybe it was just a title meant to hook the reader, or maybe it was just a book with only pictures.”
It raised high expectations for me. I expected an interesting plot with medieval characters, based on the cover. When I noticed that Avi was the author, I knew that the book was worth my while because I had recently read another book in my Language Arts class that was written by him. It was pretty good, so I figured that this book should be either the same or even better.
The story met and exceeded my expectations because it had what I was expecting: an interesting plot with medieval characters. Not only was the plot was interesting, but also entertaining, mysterious, and enchanting. All of these qualities made an exceptional book. The characters were realistic in the sense that they made decisions and behaved like real humans would have in their position. The one thing that dissatisfied me a bit was the fact that a good deal of the story took place in Thorston’s house. The plot made it exciting, despite the small lack of setting.
All in all, The Book Without Words was quite a sensational novel that I would highly recommend to anyone that wants to be captivated by a good book.
My first thought of the book would be that the book had no words (due to the fact the book was titled “The book without words”) in it, or that the book would be like a book for kids that are in first or second grade. Also,it raised expectations because from the beginning of the book it didn’t seem interesting, but as you got into the book it became much more interesting and you didn’t want to put the book down. It went way above my expectations because I thought that the book would be just another book like “REBEL” that I wouldn’t be interested in because it wouldn’t catch my attention, but surprisingly it did. It was a great book and Avi did a great job writing it. Awesome Job!!
To be honest, I really didn’t want to read this book in the first place. As we started to read I was thinking to myself ” What is going on?” Then as we went along through the book some parts just lost me.The part where it started to get interesting for me was when Thorton rose from the dead. These type of books don’t really get or hold mey attention. Since I did’t want to read the book I reallydid’t have any expectations but that it was going to be CORNEY!{I hope I spelled that right} As we proceded it kind of did meet my expectations;but new ones raised. I thought that the book , as Olivia said, was all about which craft. That really did turn me off.
I thought that the book was going to be wierd because it was called The Book Without Words. And I thought that it would talk about a book without words, telling details about it not a story. So I thought it was going to be boring, and not interesting. But when we got into the book I realized that it was much more interesting that the book cover, and the title make it appear.
when i first saw the book, i was thinking that it would be about magic and i wouldnt like it that much. the expectations it raised for me was that it would be a book i might hate and wish that we would finish it real fast. i was right that we would finish it fast but the book was a little interesting. i like that it was set in the middle ages, because i like to learn about history (especially between the roman times and the middle ages). but in all i thought the book was boring and wanted to stop reading if it had no effect on my grade
1) When I saw the title of the book I really thought………WHAT KIND OF BOOK DOES THIS GUY HAVE US READING NOW! HOW COULD THIS HAVE ANY SENSE OR MORAL TO A BOOK CALLED THE BOOK WITHOUT WORDS!!!!!!!!! But it turned out to be a good book in the end.
2) What expectation I had for this book was that it would be just another book for me to read and get a grade for it. I was waiting for something non-exciting to happen like the main charcter jump out the window. But once again I was wrong.
3) My expectations did change because nothing happened like that but in the back of my mind something told me I wouldn’t like this book and what do you know…… I WAS RIGHT! ( It wasn’t that bad though. Just not something I would pick up to read but then again the title has to be REALLY eye catching for me to read anything. I am not one to just read because I’m bored.)
When I first looked at the book I thought it was going to be a book filled with mystery, explanation, and that it was going to be somewhat of a boring book. The expectations that it raised for me are that I was going to read a book having to do with witchcraft and the author had a lot of explaning to do. When I say that I was thinking to myself, why would you title a book “A Book Without Words” and how could you make a story out of such a title. The book met, changed, and dashed all of my expectations. It kinda met my expectation about the whole witchcraft thing, even though the type of magic dealed with in the book is alchemy. It changed my expectations by explaning all of my open questions that I had running through my mind and giving me a better understanding of the book. And it dashed my expectations when I read the first couple of pages in the book, I first thought that the book was going to be boring, but once I started reading it, I wanted to continue reading because it left with me suspense every time we stopped reading. I guess I really shouldn’t judge a book by its cover!!!
My first impression of this book was that we were going to be reading another Harry Potter type book. I thought it was going to be about magic, witches, and all those types of fictional stories.
I really didnt think I would like the book at all because I dont like fantasy and magical books.
This book completely blew me away. I really enjoyed the book, even though I thought I was going to completely despise it. I would recommend this book to anyone.
My first thoughts on seeing the name of the book was “What can this book be about”. “The book without words” was an interesting name for me to see. My expectations that it raised was about all the magic and stuff. On the cover of the book it looks like a witch type thing. The story accually did end up meeting my expectations. In the book it turned out that it was about magic & spells and about how a girl and a bird were trying to get a goldmaking spell.
When I was looking at the book, I thought it was going to be really interesting. As I read further more into the book it got really boring.I expected more out of the bool, then what really happened.
My first thoughts on seeing the name of the book, The Book without Words, were that it was ironic and confusing since it was a medium sized book with more than one hundred pages filled with words. The expectations it rose were that the book would be a mystery with a twisted ending because of the irony of the title which made me think there was going to have an unexpected ending that kept you thinking like one of our previous book, The Time Machine. The story dashes these expectations since the book was based on magic and I predicted that the alchemist would die and Sybil and Odo would triumph in the end. The story meets one of my expectations because the story was a mystery in a way because in the beginning of the story I wasn’t sure on what and why the alchemist was doing these spells, the meaning of the book without words and why people can‘t read it, and the purpose of the stones until it unraveled in the middle to the end of the book.
Looking at the book for the first time I thought that is was some mystical book that would conflict with what I believe. The expectations it raised were that I would hear something about mystical creatures and spells. After reading the book my expectations were pretty much met because it had to do with magic and wizardry (which I feel are the same things as mystical creatures and spells even though they probably are). I didn’t really like this book all that much. It conflicts with what I believe(which is none of what was written) and it never interested me at all.
My first thoughts on seeing the name of the book were that it was going to have several people trying to locate this book without words for some particular reason of honor. I think the book met my expectations because I thought it sounded pretty good when I first heard of it. I liked it because it was about fantasy and there was a plot that sometimes caused suspense in where the three kids and the bird might end up.
When I saw the name of the book, I thought it was going to be an okay book. I didn’t know what it was going to be about. I thought there would be some blank pages to fool the reader. I did like the book though because I like to read about magic. When I was reading the book, I didn’t expect some things to happen. For example, I didn’t think Thorston would come back to life. At the end, the part with Alfric and the monk, I though Thorston was using his magic to pretend to be the monk to get The Book Without Words and the lifestone. The book met my expectations.
MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS ON THE BOOK WERE THAT IT WAS GOING TO BE ABOUT WITCHES AND ALL THAT HARRY POTTER STUFF. SO OBVIOUSLY I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE ABOUT MAGIC.
I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE A GOOD BECAUSE I LOVE READING ABOUT FANTASY AND MAGIC.
THE BOOK DIDNT MEET MY EXPECTATIONS. IT SUCKED. I DID NOT LIKE IT ONE BIT.
My first thoughts on reading the book title was that it was going to be one of those empty books that you can purchase and write in,like a diary or something, that is themed on a book someone wrote.(Obviously, that isn’t so since it’s a book we’re reading in critical thinking.)
I thought it would be a good book, because I love fantasy, and also I’d read a fantasy book by Avi before and it was okay.
My expectations weren’t quite met, probably because I’m used to reading much longer books, but I didn’t like it.
1.) My first impression of the book from the name of the book was “what kind of a book name is that?”
2.) My expectations of the book were that it might be good besides the wierd name.
3.) My expectations were changed because I really didn’t like it.
When i first looked at the book, i thought, “its fantasy and magic, and im wasting my time.” I didnt really think of it to have any expectations, except that it was dumb and pointless to read. After 2 weeks of nothing but reading it, i concluded that the book was exactly as i expected: pointless. I didnt like it at all. Way too easy to read.
Well my first thoughts on seeing the title, led me to think wow, well this might just be interesting. The book was amazingly great. It was so interetsting I didnt want to let go of the book. Especially when you get to the good part, and then you have to go, I just dont want to let go of it at those times! I belived this story was going to be boring at first, but I have learned to never judge a book by its cover. Im glad I didnt because I really enjiyed this book. It really hooks you in. I could basically picture every single moment in the book without any trouble. As, if I was in the book. I was so entertained with this book, I couldn’t wait to get to the next part, etc. Great job AVI, wonderful book.
My first thoughts when I heard the book title was, “Okay, this should be interesting; a book with only pictures.” This rose the expectations of the entire book being hard to understand. Seeing the book for the first time, actually holding it and seeing the cover … rose some other expectations, I began to wonder “Is this book going to be suspenseful, and interesting?” When I first opened the book that really confused me because all that time, up until then I thought the book ACTUALLY didn’t have words. Seeing the words and print changed my perspective entirely.
Then as we read the book, it drew me in, the magic and ancient things. I like mystery and suspense! So, I was very entertained by this book, and I believe it met just about ALL of my expectations, except for the fact that it has words.
I thought the book was going to be dumb when I first heard the name of it. I thought it was going to be boring and have no point, and hard to understand because it would have old english. The book wasn’t boring, it did have a piont ,and it was really easy to understand. The book did grab my attention by the middle of it and i liked th book by the end. the book made me change all my thougts about it from the beginnig of the book.
