Here’s DISCUSSION QUESTION #2:
Discuss the nature of Sherlock Holmes’ friendship with Dr. Watson. How highly does Holmes value Watson’s opinion? Why is Watson important to Holmes? Why is Holmes important to Watson? Support your answer with details from the text.
RESPOND TO NASSAH M COMMENT:
I agree with you when you say that Dr Watson is his sidekick. Dr.Watson is always with Mr Holmes in everything that Holmes starts to trust and reccomend him for a body guard duty to Sir Henry Bakerville (ch4)
Responding to Deanna L.’s Response:
Even though it may not be his case he is contributing and taking part in the action and mystery of solving it. So for the most part it could be classified as Holmes and Watson’s case. If it wasn’t both Holmes and Watson’s case then the whole book would only be about Mr.Holmes but that isnt what’s taking place here the whole book is discussing what Mr.Holmes and Dr.Watson think and discover about the case.
In Response To Alexandria R.
I agree, Holmes and Watson are like sidekicks and they both value each others opinions. They make a great duo.
Responding to Leanna’s Post:
I agree with you about why Holmes is important to Watson Because he wouldnt be able to solve the Baskervilles case without him. I agree because Dr.Watson’s level of thinking isnt as high or broad as Mr.Holmes, so his intellectual intake may not notice or comprehend the many different clues or hints on solving a case such as the Baskervilles case.
~~~ reply to Alec W. ~~~
I agree with you when you say that Holmes shows his genious by giving facts, and etc because watson is just there for really helping out and identifying all the problems and then sating the facts.
In their realationship, Holmes plays the role of the older brother to Watson’s younger brother. Holmes values Watson’s opinion very highley and he knows that Watson himself is not a genius, ” It may be that you yourself are not luminous, but you are a conductor of light”. Yet Watson helps Holmes show his genius by giving him the facts and all of the possibilities in the case and/or problem. Holmes is important to Watson because with Holmes, Watson sees that he is wrong and takes constructive criticism.
Mr. Holmes and Dr.Watsons friendship isnt a friendship at all, its more like family.I agree with this because Watson and Holmes are always with eachother and are always having ups and downs.
Mr. Holmes and Dr.Watsons friendship isnt a friendship at all, its more like family.Iagree with this because Watson and Holmes are always with eachother and are always having ups and downs.
The nature with Sherlock Holmes friendship with Dr.watson is a very strong relationship. Watson is important to Holmes because Holmes values Watsons opinion alot. Holmes likes to have everything his way,but Watson likes to give his opinion but holmes sometimes likes Watsons opinion but sometimes thinks its wrong. Watson is important to Holmes because without Watson Holmes wouldn’t be able to figure out his mysteries,because like I said he likes to tell Holmes his opinion. Holmes is important to Waatson because without Holmes Watson wouldnt know anything about mysteries.
I’m responding to Jessica F.’s response:
Jessica, I disagree with when you said : “Holmes is still important but not as highly” I think that Holmes is highly important. In fact, since he is the most main character he is much more important than Dr.Watson. Holmes does way more than Watson, without Holmes, Watsons’ mistakes wouldnt have been corrected.
Response to Kevin Y. :
You said that Holmes is important to Watson because Watson needs to solve the case, but this is Holmes case, not Watson’s. He wouldn’t be helping in this case if he wasn’t working with or for Holmes.
I believe Holmes and Watson have a very strong relationship. Holmes takes Watson’s opinions almost as seriously as his own. In Chapter 5, Holmes tells Baskerville since he couldn’t go wth him that Watson would. He did this for a couple of reasons. The most obvious is so he’ll get alot more information from the inside. But he did this for other reasons, too. One being Holmes strongly trusts Watson. He knows that Watson is the next best thing besides himself. ” If my friend would undertake it there is no man better worth having at your side when you are in a tight place. No one can say so more confidently than myself. ” ( Chapter 5 mid-chapter ). This is the perfect example of Holmes trust and confidence in Watson.
Watson is important to Holmes because obviously they’ve been friends and coworkers for a while. More importantly they respect each others’ opinions, and work off each others’ ideas. In Chapter 1, page 3, Holmes say, ” It may be that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light. ” Holmes says this meaning even though Watson isn’t always right, he sheds light on nnew ideas for Holmes and other people themselves.
As aforementioned, Holmes and Watson greatly care for each other and respect one another immensely. Holmes is important to Watson because without Holmes, Watson would probably not be a great of doctor or detective as he is today. Everything he has learned as been learned from Holmes. It is said a great number of times by Holmess, “I have taught you well” or “You are following my tactics well”, or something along those lines. It is obvious that Holmes has helped Watson in more than one way throughout their years together.
REPLY TO JHNAE F. AND VICTORIA K.
I totally agree with Jhane and Victoria. Watson and Holmes are practically brothers. They both work together for good. They may have some ups and downs, and they may not always agree all the time. For the most part they are the perfectly ordinary picture of how a relationship between two siblings!
Response to Andrew S.
i agree when you said Watson does not have the advantage of being a good detective like Holmes. its true! Watson isnt good at thinking outside the box as Holmes does and Watson is always a step behind Holmes. Watson sometimes makes mistakes and sometimes mistakes cant be made. he analyzed the stick wrong in ch 1 and came up with the wrong conclusion but he helps Holmes get the right one.
REPLY TO JHANE F;
You said. “To Me Mr. Holmes and Dr.Watsons friendship isnt a friendship at all, its more like family. they are always togerther and they value each others company.”
– I totally agree with that, because they are like never apart and if they are they are doing it to help each other.
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson seems to be the best team, because Dr. Watson thinks about the things and gives his opinion and Sherlock Holmes thinks about it, and corrects it and figures out what actually was going on. Holmes values Dr. Watson’s opinion because he always uses that to help with what they are trying to figure it out. Dr. Watson is important to Holmes because if it wasn’t for Dr. Watson opinion then Holmes probably wouldn’t figure out some of the mysteries or problems without Dr. Watson. Holmes is important to Dr. Watson because Holmes is always the one that solves the problem or mystery and Dr. Watson gives ideas or predicts what happened.
Dr.Watson and Mr.Holmes are like bestfriends,they have a strong bond. Even though they don’t always agree on what the other one has to say most of the time.They still cherish each other’s company and inputs.Watson’s opionion is very highly valued,Holmes is still important but not as highly.In chapter one (13th paragraph) Holmes says “It may be that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light. Some people without possessing genius have a remarkable power of stimulating it. I confess, my dear fellow, that I am very much in your debt.” That quote basically meant that Watson brings out the genius in Holmes.He helps gather information that he might of missed and find clues that he himself can not find.As said by Watson “I was proud too, to think that I had so far mastered his system as to apply it in a way which earnned his approval”.Even though Holmes knows Watson is sometimes wrong he compliments and lets him know that he is useful and giving him information and inputs about stuff that he might be able to use to solve the case so Watson feels proud of himself.
I agree with you when you said that Watson does not have the advantage of being a good detective like Holmes. It is true because even though Watson does have good dectective skills, he is sometimes mistaken when analyzing. This is seen in ch. 1 when Holmes and Watson are discussing the walking stick of Dr. James Mortimer, which Dr. Mortimer had left behind the day before. Even though Watson came up with a good conclusion, it was not very accurate as Holmes pointed out. Watson does not have ssuch a quick and sharp mind as Holmes does.
The friendship of Holmes and Dr. Watson is described as a partnership. They work well together and help each other in tight places. Holmes values Watson’s opinion even if it is wrong. In chapter one Holmes says “It may be that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light. Some people without possessing genius have a remarkable power of stimulating it. I confess, my dear fellow, that I am very much in your debt.” Watson is important to Holmes because Watson helps Holmes gather information he might have missed. Watson also helps Holmes find clues when Holmes him self cannot. This is seen at the end of Ch. 5 when Watson is to go to Baskerville Hall with Sir Henry, while Holmes must stay in London. Holmes is important to Watson because Holmes taught Watson how to think critically. In ch.1 paragraph 14, Watson says, “He had never said as much before, and I must admit that his words gave me keen pleasure, for I had often been piqued by his indifference to my admiration and to the attempts which I had made to give publicity to his methods. I was proud, too, to think that I had so far mastered his system as to apply it in a way which earned his approval”. Watson felt proud because Holmes noticed (and praised) the fact that Watson was applying his methods.
Holmes values Watson’s opinion .Watson’s opinion is very helpful to Holmes. “It may be that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light. Some people without possesing genius have a remarkable power of stimilating it. I confess my dear fellow, that Iam very much in your debt.” This quote was found in chapter 1 in the 13th paragraph. It is the third, fourth, and fifth sentence.
Watson and Holmes are important to eachother because they both help eachother. As the previous quote said Watson brings out the genius in Holmes. Holmes is the person who taught Watson his way of thinking, which makes Holmes important to Watson. “I was proud too, to think that I had so far mastered his system as to apply it in a way which earnned his approval” said Watson. This was found in the 1st chapter in paragraph 14. This is actually how these two charecters compliment eachother.
i forgot to put my last inital in the comment above, sorry!
i agree with leanna.
holmes always thinks he’s right, and he wants to keep it that way, even though he might put his friend down by always proving him wrong, he makes up for it by helping him feel like hes important.“It may be that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light. Some people without possessing genius have a remarkable power of stimulating it. I confess, my dear
fellow, that I am very much in your debt.”
Reply to Alexandria:
I agree with you on how their friendship is strong, how Holmes highly values Watson’s opinion, and how they both are inportant to each other. I also agree when you said how Watson may not be such a genious but he brings out the genious in others.
To Me Mr. Holmes and Dr.Watsons friendship isnt a friendship at all, its more like family. they are always togerther and they value each others company.
i think Mr. Holmes highly values Dr.Watsons oppinion because it helps him figure out the loop holes in cases as Mr. Holmes says in chapter one: “It may be that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light. Some people without possessing genius have a remarkable power of stimulating it. I confess, my dear
fellow, that I am very much in your debt.” Mr. Holmes means that Watson isnt the brightest person, but he helps people understand things to the full potention even though he fully doesnt himself.
i think Mr. Holmes is also very important to Dr.Watson because if he wasnt he wouldnt waist his time helping him(or at least trying to) solve cases.
Dr.Watson and Mr.Holmes are great companions and have a really great friendship with each other.
I think Homles does value Dr.Watson’s opinions, because if he would want an opinion that would support him, he is most likely to ask Dr. Watson about his assumption towards the situation, since in chapter 1 Holmes says that ” It maybe that you are not yourself luminous,but you are a conductor of light ”, which means he doesn’t get everything right but pieces of the problem-like Dr.Mortimer’s stick.
I think that Dr. Watson is important to Holmes because he is like a good friend and assistant to him, because if he needs something, Watson can get it done for him. He also might give parts of information or suggestions to the problem that
Holmes hasn’t figured out yet.
Holmes is important to Watson because he is a good friend to him and respects him, he also corrects the mistakes he makes.
Response to Aleeyah.
I disagree with you when you said that Holmes doesn’t value Watson’s opinion. According to the book, Holmes confessed that he was in very much of Watson’s debt. This was because in noting the wrong conclusions of Watson, Holmes was able to get the right conclusions and he feels that it was partly Watson’s doing. So basically, Holmes values Watson’s opinions.
Sherlock Holmes and Dr.Watson have a very strong friendship. Holme’s values Watson opinion very high because if Holmes would like a back up thought he would ask Dr.Watson what he thinks about the situation. Watson is very important to Holmes because Watson is like Holme’s sidekick if Holmes would need somthing done Watson would take care of it for him .I belive Holmes is important to Watson because Holmes corrects Watson’s mistakes .For example in chapter 1 Holme’s said ” It maybe that you are not yourself luminous,but you are a conductor of light ”. It means that Watson may not be a genious but he brings out the genious in other people .
I believe Holmes really looks for Watson’s opinion. When they found the walking stick Holmes asked Watson to give his opinion on it. Holmes called watson his “good friend” i think that show the value of thier friendship.
As we all know, Watson helps Holmes solve mysterys. When Holmes asked Watson to go to Baskerville Hall, Watson instantly agreed. Watson would give holmes feedback on what is going on at and around Baskerville Hall. This shows how loyal Watson is to Holmes. Ibelieve Holmes is very important to Watson . I think Watson looks up to Holmes. HE strives to be like him, to know and figure things out like Holmes. I think that they are very good friends, and the help each other out.
Mr. Holmes friendship with Mr. Watson is rather close in a partnership kind of way.
Holmes highly values Dr. Watsons opinions even as he says in chapter 1, page 13 “It may be that you yourself are not luminous, but you are a conductor of light”. That means Dr. Watson doesnt get everything right, but gets pieces of information right.
Watson is important to Holmes by giving answers or possibilities to a problem that Holmes hasn’t figured out yet.
Holmes is important to Watson because Holmes corrects Watson’s mistakes, like the walking stick of Dr. Mortimer.
reply to Matt W.
i agree with the thoery of Watson being Holmes sidekick and that they make a good detective team, but they dont really see each other as equals because like when Watson had shed some light in that stick Holmes corrected him on his theory which is an example.
oh and Mr. Moshe my answer to the question had Why is Holmes important to Watson? Support your answer with details from the text on it because, i copied the whole question onto my box were i typed my answer so i could look back at it and i forgot to delete it so just ignore it.
Why is Holmes important to Watson? Support your answer with details from the text.
Dr. Watson is Holmes partner in solving mysterys or basically his right hand man or side kick. Holmes values Watson’s opinion very much when Watson is on to something “It may be that you are not yourself luminous,
but you are a conductor of light”. Watson is important to Holmes because Holmes alone couldn’t do this mystery by himself, an example is on page 2 “I
confess, my dear fellow, that I am very much in your debt.” which Holmes said this after Watson had shed some light on the mysterous stick they found. Holmes is important to Watson because Watson respects Holmes and admires his astonishing detective work and was picked by Holmes to work with him.
Holmes and Watson’s relationship is a partnership and a friendship. They are partners when it comes to detective work, but they are also close friends. For example, in chapter 5 Holmes asked Watson to look after Sir Henry Baskerville because he could not do it himself. That favor was a combination of detective work and friendship.
Holmes highly values Watson’s opinion because Holmes said, “It may be that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light. Some people without possessing genius have a remarkable power of stimulating it. I confess, my dear fellow, that I am very much in your debt.” Which means that Watson has a way of sparking Holmes’ imagination and Holmes is in Watson’s debt because of all the help he gives him. Watson is important to Holmes for that reason.
Holmes is important to Watson because if Watson were on his own as a detective instead of an assistant, he would often be wrong and it would take him much longer to solve cases and he probably wouldn’t get many because of that. For example, in the small case of Dr. Mortimer’s walking stick, Watson’s assumptions were wrong, and he needed Holmes to correct him.
REPLYING TO ALEEYAH’S POST:
I agree with your reasons as to why Holmes is important to Watson. If Watson was the detective, and Holmes had not been there, he would not have known the truth about the walking stick and would probably be wrong in more serious cases than the owner of a lost walking stick.
I think that you are wrong about Dr. Watson not being a good detective. I think one of the reasons Holmes and Watson are such close friends is because they are both good at being realistic detectives. In the first chapter when Holmes asked Watson what he thought of the stick, Watson gave a very good, educated, and practtical guess just like a detective.
I believe that the relationship between Mr.Holmes and Dr. Watson is not Holmes being the leader and Watson being the sidekick. I think that they see each other as equals. Both Holmes and Watson need each other to be a good detective team. Holmes said,” It may be that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a contductor of light”, this means that Holmes needs Watson to help him bring out the full genius within himself.Thus they both need eachother.
Mr Holmes values Watson’s opinion very highly because Holmes believes that Watson’s opinons helps find the right answers himself but at the same time prove his own right.
Watson vaules Holmes because Holmes is his close friend and he respects Mr. Holmes.
RESPONDING TO KEVIN Y:
I agree with you on the closeness of their friendship. They don’t always agree, especially Holmes, with each other’s opinions, since Holmes is frequently contradicting Watson’s statements and opinions, but still get along and trust each other greatly.
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are very close friends. They work together to solve difficult cases, like they are now in the Baskerville case, and each other’s input when put together helps to come up with a likely conclusion to solve an important mystery.
Holmes values Watson’s opinion to an extent. He enjoys hearing his statements, but almost always he enjoys proving them false.
“I am afraid, my dear Watson, that most of your conclusions were erroneous,” says Holmes to Watson, Chapter 1, Paragraph 17, in reference to what the initials ‘C.C.H.’ meant.
Watson is important to Holmes because he may not always have the right conclusion to what things mean, but sometimes he may lead to the correct conclusion.
“It may be that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light”, says Holmes to Watson, Chapter 1, Paragraph 13, in reference to how he lead to accurate predictions about the walking stick.
Holmes is important to Watson because Holmes is a very intelligent man who can help him see the error in his logic and provide him with the correct answer.
I am responding to Erik’s answer.
I disagree with your answer because I believe the quote means that Watson isn’t a genious, however, he has the power of contributing to Holmes’ ideas and those put together will give both Watson and Holmes a better perspective on the case.
Mr Holmes values Dr Watson’s opinion highly because he said in chapter 1 p 13 that Holmes said ” It may be that you are not yourself luminous , but you are a conductor of light. I think this means that he thinks watson is not a genious but it can really show it.
Watson is important to holmes because he says in chp. 1 pg 17 that “when I said that you stimulated me I meant, to be frank, that in noting your fallacies I was occasionally guided towards the truth.” meaning that watson actually influenced him making him important in my opinion.
Holmes is important to watson because he thinks of holmes as the leader in the partner ship. Like in chp. 1 paragraph 14 he says ‘He had never said as much before, and I must admit that his words
gave me keen pleasure, for I had often been piqued by his
indifference to my admiration and to the attempts which I had
made to give publicity to his methods. I was proud, too, to
think that I had so far mastered his system as to apply it in a
way which earned his approval.” Meaning that hes important to him .
Holmes values Watsons opinion high. Mr Holmes said to Watson(ch1 p.13) “It may be that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light ” meaning that Watson is not a genious but he has the power of showing it. He also says to Watson(ch1 p.13) ” I confess, my dear fellow that I am very much in your debt.” This means that Holmes think that Watson may be right. With Watson wrong conclusion, he was able to find the truth by the facts Watson gave him.
Watson is important to Holmes because both of them thinking together will be able to solve the Baskerville case. Also in Chapter 1 p.17 Holmes said to Watson “when I said that you stimulated me I meant, to be frank, that in noting your fallacies I was occasionally guided towards the truth.”
Holmes is important to Watson because without Holmes, Watson would get the wrong answers and conclusions to a case. Holmes is there to correct his mistakes and being able to get ideas with the errors of Watson. For example the walking stick.
Mr.Holmes and Dr.Watson’s friendship is quite different from many other relationships. Although they always have a difference in opinion and dont agree on things most of the time they always cherish each other’s company and ideas. Watson’s opinion is highly valued by Mr.Holmes because he brings out the genius in other people to help them figure out thier problems. As Mr.Holmes said (in chapter 1 towards the middle ) “It may be that you are not yourself luminious but u emmit light for others”. Which means that he may noy be smart himself but brings out the genius in other people.
Watson is important to Mr.Holmes beacause as he said in (Chapter 1 P-13 ) ” I confess my dear fellow,that i am very much in your debt.” He points out that he is very grateful for all of his inputs no matter if he agrees or disagrees with his observations or opinions.
Holmes is important to Watson because without Holmes he would never get the correct solution to the Baskerville’s case or any other case he would be assigned to. For example, Dr.Watson made a educated guess about the letter sent to one of the family members of the Baskervilles. But to his demise Mr.Holmes revealed that his answer was incorrect and provided him with the correct answer as he always does.
Holmes and Dr.Watson have a very strong bond/ relationship. Holmes doesn’t highly value Watsons opinion sometimes. Holmes probably thinks he knows alot better than Watson, so in order to prove it he doesn’t value Watsons opinions. For example in Chapter 1 Holmes said, “I am afraid my dear watson, that most of your conclusions were erroneous”.
However, Watson is important to Holmes because since Watson knows more about the Baskerville curse together both Watson and Holmes can put thier minds together to solve this case.
It’s also the other way around, Holmes is important to Watson. He’s important to him because since Watson is wrong most of the time, therefore he needs Holmes to correct his mistakes and through his mistakes Holmes can find the right answer. For example the small case of the walking stick.
Dr. Watson & Mr. Holmes are close partners, even though Watson doesn’t have the advantage of being a good detective, like Mr.Holmes. He still tries taking on any challenge to figuring out a mystery that comes to him, whether it be big or small. Unfortunately, Watson’s opinion on the subject are rarely valued by Mr. Holmes. For instance in chapter 1, paragraph 17, when Dr.Homes says “I am afraid, my dear Watson, that most of your conclusions were erroneous.” This fraze tells you what Dr.Watson’s thinks about Mr.Holme’s responces.
Mr Watson and Sherlock Holmes are in tune with eachother! Sherlock sort of depends on Watson’s opinions like in ch 1 Holmes says “It may be that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light. Some people without possessing genius have a remarkable power of stimulating it. I confess, my dear
fellow, that I am very much in your debt.” Watson makes Holmes think, he makes him get in sync. Even though Watson is wrong most of the time, he makes Holmes realize what he missed or the obvious. Watson is very important!!!!!!! Such as when Waston and Holmes were talking about the stick and Watson was making incorrect conclusions, Holmes listened and was able to come up with the right answer. as i said in ch 1 Holmes stated; ““it may be that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light.” basically saying even though you can’t get the right answer doesnt mean you cant help another person can. well i cant really say it in words but you know what i mean. Watson is important to Holmes too! Without Watson, Holmes would probably get lost and Watson helps him think straight. Basically Watson helps Holmes solve what Holmes couldn’t do by himself. : )
Kryssa, your answers are brilliant and well thought out. I have two suggestions for you:
(1) Use fewer words.
(2) Include your citations within the text of your answers
Take a look below at what I have done with (part of) your answer. Compare your answer with my version.
Here’s my version:
Watson is important to Holmes because Holmes needs a companion such as Watson, and another point of view for certain things. As Holmes remarked, “I confess, my dear fellow, that I am very much in your debt” (C-1, P-13). Holmes expresses two things through this statement: (1) he needs Watson around for things he doesn’t see himself, and (2) he is thankful for every bit of information Watson gives him.
All I did was simplify your exact idea. I have not changed your answer. I only used fewer words.
Great work, Kryssa!! Keep it up!
I have other suggestions as a result of looking at post here in this period.
-=-=Limit the amount of quoted text you use in your answer. Most of the answer should be in your own words – only quoting essential portions of the book/text.
-=-=The name is “Holmes” not “Homes” homes. aight!
Enjoy!!
The friendship of Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes is described as a partnership. They work together and bring out the best in each other. Holmes’ values Watson’s opinions because even if they are wrong, it’s still useful to him. For example in chapter 1, when Holmes and Watson discuss about the walking stick, Holmes listens to what Watson was saying even if it is incorrect. And because of the incorrect statements, Holmes was able to get to the right answer.
Watson is important to Holmes because he thinks that Watson is the one who stimulates the genius in him. For example, when Holmes said, (ch.1 paragraph 13) “it may be that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light. Some people without possessing genius have a remarkable power of stimulating it”. This meant that Watson’s wrong conclusions helped Holmes understand the answers to their problem.
Holmes is important to Watson because he looks up to Holmes as a teacher and a leader. In chapter one, Holmes congratulated Watson for applying his methods, Watson stated, (ch.1 paragraph 14) “He had never said as much before, and I must admit that his words gave me keen pleasure, for I had often been piqued by his indifference to my admiration and to the attempts which I had made to give publicity to his methods. I was proud, too, to think that I had so far mastered his system as to apply it in a way which earned his approval.” This meant that the words of Holmes gave Watson a sense of pride because usually Holmes didn’t pay much attention to the tries he had made of applying his methods until now.
Homes thinks of Watson’s opinion very highly. As he said in Chaprter One “It may be that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light. Some people without possessing genius have a remarkable power of stimulating it. I confess, my dear
fellow, that I am very much in your debt.” Which means that Watson was not entirely correct in his hypotheses, but was right along enough to inspire Holmes to find the truth. This makes Watson important and very highly thought of. Also, Holmes is important to Watson because he makes Watson think in very different ways, and Holmes taught Watson his “methods”, or ways of solving puzzles. This makes Holmes important to Watson.
Dr. Watson and Mr. Holmes are close partners. Even though Watson doesn’t have the advantage of being a detective, like Holmes does, he still takes on the challenge of figuring out a mystery, whether it be big or small. Unfortunately, Watson’s opinion’s on the topic are barely valued by Mr. Holmes. “I am afraid, my dear Watson, that most of your conclusions were erroneous.” That quote was found in Chapter 1 Paragraph 17; said by Mr. Holmes. That statement says, in other words, that Watson’s theory is mistakenly wrong, and Holmes knows that he is right.
Watson is important to Holmes because when Watson expresses his opinion, Holmes is sure that it is wrong, and in Holmes’ favor he is correct. That way Holmes has a superior feeling because he is positive to show Watson wrong.
‘There was such a ring of conviction in his voice that I glanced up in surprise.’ That is said by the narrator, Watson, by not aloud. That sentence was found in Chapter 1 Paragraph 36. It means that the firmness of Holmes’ voice indicates that Holmes feels good inside when Watson voices his opinion because Holmes knows that Watson is wrong and he is right.
Holmes is important to Watson because without Holmes Watson would not be able to find the correct solution to the Baskerville’s case. In Chapter 1 towards the beginning, Watson clearly proved that he was wrong in the category of Dr. Mortimer’s stick. Without Holmes, Watson would not have known that Dr. Mortimer was the owner of the stick; and without Watson knowing that, he would have never spoke nor heard the story on the curse of the Baskervilles which ties the whole novel together. So, in other words, Holmes is important to Watson because Watson needs help solving the Baskerville’s problem.
