Discussion 3 – MONSTER by Walter Dean Myers – Friends & Acquaintances
First, if you haven’t already, go to the page below, and do what is required of you. Then, come back and DISCUSS.
Why is it so important to carefully choose your friends and acquaintances? Use to details from the book to support your position on this topic.
You should choose your friends wisely because some of them might be bad and will get you into big troulble like what happened to Steve. A friend will help you and not bring yuo down. Also a friend should be someone you trust and can trust for a really long time.
It is important to choose your friends and aquantices because if you hang out with somebody thats been in a robery with some people and hes a suspect and your hanging out with him your going to go to jail because they are going to think you were part of a robery, Also it is important to choose carefully because if your friends tries to get you to do something you dont want to do he can threaten you and kill you if you say no
It is important to choose your friends because they are a reflection of who you are. Your friends don’t choose themselves, you do. Steve Harmon wasn’t a bad kid, he just hung out with the wrong people espacially at the wrong time that caused him to end up in a horrible situation. Also such as myself. I was bad at making friends. I was always with the wrong crowrd at the wrong time and ended up in some possible life threating situation. But once I got some acdemically great friends, my attitude changed.
its important to chooswe your friends wisely becuse what they do can effect what happens to you, and you could wind up with there punishment when they turn up to be your not so called friend. when you choose your friends you choose the other half of you and the rest of your life. When your friends messs get into trouble they first people they’re going to go to is you or if our friend does something good you look good too because when you became friends you became each others representer which makes you a good representer.
it is important to choose your friends because the friends you choose if there bad or good will effect you in the future. Just like in the book Monster how steve had his friends he had hung around with. then later he soon got in trouble and was convicted of a crime even though he admits that his not a bad person but a good person.
People are judged by the people that they are around and are acquainted with. Automatically our brains make a generalization that all the people in a group are the same in many ways. Suppose you look at a group of people that hang around a skate park. Obviously we believe that every single person in that group likes to skate and has a similar mindset. This is our mind’s generalization and what we believe to be true, but it in fact is not. We judge people by their acquaintances and friend circle.
It is very important to choose your acquaintances wisely because they will come back to haunt you. If you are close friends with a criminal, chances are that he/she would want you to pursue crime just like them. If you are close friends with a grade “A” student that is highly motivated and driven to do the right thing, most likely this will influence you mindset and you might also possibly become just like them. Either way it is the friends and acquaintances that make a big impact on your life.
I think it is important to choose your friends wisely. If you choose people who you know are going to get you in trouble as your friend or aquaintace then you realize your going to get in trouble. If your friends went to rob a bank and you were there you will be put on trail just because you were there. In the book Steve chose these people as an aquaintance and they robbed and killed a person in the dug store. Just because one person said that Steve was there he got put on trial for murder. Aslo Ms.Henry and hiself said that Steve wasn’t there. Steve is still trying to figure out what he did in order to get put on trail because “he wasn’t there.” If you chooe friends that do good then you won’t get in trouble unless you do bad by yourself.
I think you should choose your friends wisely. Steve was put in a bad situation because of who he knew. Choosing the wrong friends can get you into trouble. Everything they do can be traced back to you, good or bad.
Friends are always going to be a great influence on you and your actions. Being with the wrong crowd will no doubt, influence you in the wrong ways. They way they act and the way they do things will greatly rub off on you. Which is why if you don’t want to end up like poor Steve from the book “Monster” you should think wisely about who you decide to be aquainted with. “Just because your friends jump off a bridge doesn’t mean you should.”
I agree with most of the following comments, people can tell who you are by the type of group you hang out with. If you don’t hang out with the type of people that actually like the REAL you and respect the REAL you, then people will know who you truely are. That’s a good thing because you should be yourself. Who cares what people say about it? It doesn’t matter what other peoples opinions are, it only matters what YOUR opinion is. Do not let ANYONE get in the way of that, BE YOURSELF.
I agree with Dessie D. and Graison H. because if the jurors think that Steve is good friends with King, then Steve will most likely be like King in the jurors minds. If Steve hung out with King and people like him, then their attitude will rub off onto Steve. If the jury knew that Steve and King were good friends, then they would be even more convinced that Steve participated in the robbery. You have to choose who you hang out with and who you choose to be friends with because they reflect on who you are. You will be judged by who you hang out with. In Steve’s case, he may be put in jail for the rest of his life because of who he chose to hang out with.
I think it is very important to choose your friends wisely because you can be influnced by them . Or like you can call them your friend but then behind your back they might be talking about you or like they can get in trouble . Like theres this quote that says its better to have more enemies then friends because atleast they say how they feel about you , an while friends ( not all but some ) say they are your friends but they really arnt.
You want to have friends who have things in common with you. You don’t want to go with the wrong crowd. You want to hang out with people you think are cool. You don’t want to do what everyone else does just to make you look cool. Steve went with the wrong people and now he is in trouble. Find friends who would enjoy having you around.
I agree that people should pick there friends and acquaintances very carefully because of the people you hang out with they rub off on you. People also take into consideration how you act around your friends most people judge a person by who they hang out with. They do this because they dont want you to be there friend if they know that if you are always around people who get in trouble because they simply dont want to get in trouble just to have you as a freind.
I agree with some of the comments because the people that judge you also judge you on the people around you. It’s a big part when it comes to judging you when people look at your friends. I think people should judge you on your personality instead of your friends because they can be an acquaintance. The people judging might not even know that the person you’re talking to is an acquaintance. There is a big difference between acquaintance and friend. An acquaintance can be somebody that you talk to once in a while. A friend is somebody you talk to everyday and somebody that you can trust and respect. In the story “Monster” by Walter Dean Myers, Steve was being judged by outsiders because they saw him with a gang member, Osvaldo Cruz, a murderer,James King, and a person who sells cigarettes, Bobo Evans. These people are seen around with Steve and it makes him look like the bad guy because of the people he hangs around with.
It’s very important that you choose who you hang out with and who you rarely talk to very importantly becuse they can play a huge role in your life wether you know it or not. For example say you have a friend who smokes and drinks and one day they talk you into smoking some weed with them. Say on that very same day your school decides to have a urine test to make sure that no one has did any drugs. Then what? Then you will get in trouble for doing something your “friend” talked you into doing and you can’t blame them for you taking the weed because overall, you’re supposed to make your own decisions.
It is important who you choose to be your friends because they tell your personality like you have friends that are funny that says that you like to spend time with funny people and that you are funny yourself. Your acuaintances are people you may know because you have bumped into or something, but in most cases just because you know someone people might think that you guys are friends you could get stuck in some serious trouble later on in life.
It is important to carefully choose your friends and acquaintances. If you’re ever stuck in a situation like Steve Harmon in MONSTER by Walter Dean Myers, you don’t want the jurors to know that you’re close to someone like James King, the person who committed the crime. If they know that you’re close to someone like him, they will think that you were involved in the felony, which will end you up in prison for quite a long time. You want to present yourself as a good person, and good people do not associate themselves with bad people. If the juror knows that you two are friends, that’s not a very good thing.
So, unless you want to end up somewhere you’re not supposed to be, choose your friends and acquaintances wisely, because if you don’t they could drag you into something unpleasant and you could find yourself in Steve’s situation.
In my opinion it is very important to pick and choose your friends wisely because it reflects you as a person. Steve is a very good exaple, he should have really looked at his friends and his acquaintances to make shure he was making good choices. When you look at someone that is neat, proper, and sweet spending time with people that like punk rock music and are doing things they know they shouldn’t be doing, that’s a problem. That person will be questioned. Steve may not live in a nice neighborhood, he might not have a wonderful family, but he could at least make good choices on who his friends are.
I agree with Graison H because if the jurrors think Steve is close with King, then they obviously talk alot and tell eachother things which means Steve knew all along what was going on with the robbery and he was most likely included in the robbery and the look out and he deserves to go to jail. So people do judge you based on who you hang out with and who your friends are, your friends represent a part of who you are in most cases.
It is really important to carefully choose your friends and acquaintances without actually knowing a lot of information about the people that you chose to become your friend or acquaintance. For example, you could pick a serial killer as a friend without actually knowing that the person is a serial killer. Being friends with a serial killer could get you into a lot of difficulties and trouble in your life, and it might also ruin your life forever. This also happens in schools multiple times. For example, you could be an all A’s type of student and become friends with a child who focuses on bullying the smaller kids and gets really bad grades because he doesn’t put his full-on effort into the work he does. The all A’s student wouldn’t have a clue of what his new friend does, since he doesn’t know a whole lot about him or her.
I think it is important because the ones that you think are your friends really arent . I mean some of them are , but you have to be careful of who you call friends and who you call acquaintances . Not all of the people that you say are your friends have your back like you think they do . You could do everything with that person , like go to the movies and hang out and stuff and they act like yall are the best of friends . Then when you go back to school they are talking about and stuff . Thats not a true friend or a person that you call friend . Friends are people that have your back no matter what and never talk about and never want to hurt you . Yall may fuss or fight but at the end of the day if its a true friend you have each others back . Like in monster Steve thought they was his friends , but at the courthouse they are saying that he comitted the crime and throwing him under the bus . They did that just so they could get out of trouble . If thats true friends or a true friendship , then i dont want to have any friends . Thats why you have to chose your friends wisely , because they may be somebody else and not who you think they are . They may have mixed personalities .

I think that your character traits depend on who the kind of people you hang out with on the weekends or on your freetime. If you hang out with people that are trouble makers you may want to show off and do the same things they do, and you may want to choose your friends wisely. Steve Harmon didn’t choose his friends/acquaintices wisely.
I think it’s important to choose your friends and acquaintances carefully because people are judged by the people they are around. Also, your friends or acquaintances sometimes influence you on what to do.
Steve’s acquaintances influenced him into making wrong decisions.

I think its important too choose your friends & aquintances wisely because you could call someone a friend & end up with them in jail. In the book Steve says that Bobo & James are just his aquintances but as you can see he talked too them quit frankly alot too be just aquintances with Bobo & James. Steve states several times in his flashbacks about the conversaions that he’d had with Bobo & James. When petrocelli asked him did he consider them friends or aquintances of course… HE SAID AQUINTANCES in my opinion he said that too save his tail because if he would’ve have said they’re my friends the prosecutor would’ve have put Steve at the scene as a accomplist too the robbery + the murder. I understand why he’d do that but he should’ve have picked who he wanted too be aquintanced with very WISELY because even though that they are his aquintances he still should have thought ” i pretty much talk too these neighborhood people alot so either i should distance myself because i know what they are about ‘ or of course did he was doing talking & not distancing himself then getting himself into amurder & robbery.
yes i agree b/c when you hang with your friends, stuff that they do will rub off on you, then you start doing it. If your friends do drugs, then you’ll start doing drugs. If your friends got swag, then youll start to get more swag and get noticed more. Like steve, he hang out with friends that are in jail, so he went to jail. So choose your friends wisely
I think it is important to pick your friends and acquaintances because rather you like it or not people will judge you based on who you hang out with. Unless you show them differently.
In the book “Monster” Steve’s deffence ottorney O’Brian didnt want the jurrors to think of Steve as King. Because King was a bad person. And if Steve was friends with King O’Brian didnt want the jurrors to think Steve acts like King. A good example of how people look at your friends actions and judge you.
Personally i think it is bad how people judge you based on your friends. But i know ive done the same thing. But i like to prove people wrong and show them that i am my own person and you should judge me off of me. off of how i present myself to you.
It’s important to pick your friends because who they are reflect who you are. For example, in the story Monster, Mr. King was friends with Mr. Evans so you can infer that these two people were alike. Also because of this friendship, one has ended up in prison, and the other may go to prision. So you must choose your friends wisely.
Friends and aquaintances are very important to choose. Believe it or not, you are judged based on your friends. People see you and the people you’re with, and they automatically assume something, even without thinking. If you have smart, wholesome people around you, not only will you improve, but people will think and say “Oh, well he/she would never hang out with those troublemakers”. Having certain people as friends or aquaintances really affected Steve Harmon in MONSTER. He was aquainted with King, and so it’s kind of hard for people to separate him from the robbery. Even little things, like occaisonally speaking to someone about the wrong things can get you in trouble. Poor Steve had to find that out the hard way.
It is important to pick and chose your friends and acquaintances because they are the ones who help you when you need it. They are the ones who perswade you to do either good things or bad. They are the people who you rely on and they rely on you. you need to pick them by there character and what their interests are.
It is important to choose your friends and acquaintances carefully because in the book monster Steve is on trial for a murder with acquiantances that he barely talked to. Also the people that acquaintances were participants in the murder.
It is very important to choose wisely the people that you are deciding to hang out with, or share your life with. Make sure that you choose somebody that will be by your side during joyful times, and during sad times, because that is when you really need them the most. If you choose to hang out with people that have a bad record with society, then you are choosing to be part of whatever they have going on. At the beginning you may not know that you are getting yourself into that, but at the end, that is how it always ends. With you being the victim in the story because you got caught up with being one of them to “blend in” . Just like Steve, he chose to take part in something that will probably control the rest of his life. Most times, when people get caught up with a bad crew of people, it is because they are alone, and they feel like they have to find a way to be like everyone else, even if that makes you do things that you never thought to come across before. That is how life is. because all of us don’t always do everything as we want to, and hope to.

It is important too choose your friends carefully because your friends that you hang with tend too rub off on you. If your out in public and your friends are acting out of control then people are going to think your out of control too since you are with them. Steve Harmon is an excellent example becasue he associates with James King & Osvaldo and they are both juvienielle deliquients. James King is a bad influnce on Steve and now Steve is on trial for felony murder !That shows you why you shouldnt hang with the wrong crowd or “go with the wind”.
It is very important to choose your friends wisely because people can judge you by the people you hang around. Take Steve for example he was judged for a crime he may not of comitted and its kind of sad. Just because of his friends or aquaintances.
In the story it’s important who is your friend and just an aquaintance, because they will assossiate you with your friends especially during serious cases. They feel that your friends influence who you are and what you want to do, but if they are just an aquaintance, then you don’t know them all that well and can’t be considered a person who influenced your decision, who you are and what you did.
So I don’t think that it’s truly someone your aquainted with should be used to judge your character.
