In science class you recently learned about the Cell Theory. One of the important parts of this theory is that living cells can only come from other living cells. A phenomenon we like to call “like comes from like”. However, my young, bright students brought up a valid question: Where did the first cell come from? Obviously life had to start somewhere! Using what you know about cells, chemical interactions, your knowledge of what makes up all matter and living things, and possibly even research on the topic, discuss your ideas and theories in response to this question. Please be respectful, literate, and use acadmic vocabulary in your response.
Where did the first cell come from?

I think that cells came from cell organelle’s.(x-tra credit). There was one cell organell. And then that one made a cell and that cell made another cell and those cells made more cells and those cells made more cells and those cells made more cells and those cells made more cells and those cells made more cells and those cells made more cells and those cells made more cells and those cells made more cells… on and on and on.
(Do not judge me.)
One theory that suggests the beginning of the earth itself is the big bang theory. This theory states that the earth came from one big huge explosion in the galaxy. Can this relate to the beginning of the first cell? It is very possible that a chemical reaction such as the one explosion from the big bang theory created the living cell. Earth didn’t have any real life forms until after the Pre-Cambrian time. What if a chemical reaction within the earth created the first cell? The smallest mixture, or disruption of the natural abiotic factors, could result in the start of the first ever living cell.
I think the first cell came from ( yea, god) but like Cindy said a grouping of organelles . DNA also contributed to the formation of the cell
I tink that the first cell came from a chemical reaction. I think that two chemicals came together and some how created a one cell organism and the cell reproduced and later became human.
I believe that through chemical reactions between elements, compounds, and mixtures created the things that make up the cell and eventually genetic mutations caused it to become a cell.
Like Patrick W. said, RNA world is a good answer to this question although there are many theories that we could spend days telling you about, which is probably what you want. Im siding with the RNA world theory: RNA is the same as DNA but it predates it, and it produced DNA.
I think the first cells come from chemicals that came from the earth when it first formed billions of years ago. I think that it was a complex chemical bonding that created it. I also agree with Cindy that cells came from the bonding of organelles. If cells are made up of organelles then that means organelles had to bond to make the cell. Then I think the DNA would be able to make it reproduce more and more cells. That is why I think where cells came from.
I think that cells may have appeared from chemical reactions. These reactions could have formed the different organelles. When different groups of organelles combined they formed the actual cell. After the cell was formed, it could begin reproducing like it now does.
I agree with Laila how she had sad that nature was able to give
off DNA to by a random plant species billoins of years ago. Also remember DNA is like an instruction manual so this might be the first cell on the Earth.
I think the first cell came from nature. Back then poeple (cave men) didn’t have houses. Even Indians didn’t have houses. Some people lived in the woods. Where trees served as protection, and a place to hide. Trees are technically living things. In trees are cells. Even in the animals that were hunted contained cells. Cells were discovered long before “scientists” came along, but nobody knew because cave men are thought to be absent minded.
I think the first cell might have come from molecules that probably evolved into cells.
I think that the first cell was created by a chemical reaction in which atoms combined and reproduced and then mutated into different organnelles and so on and so on.
I think that the first cell came from a unique type of atoms that mixed together and that one cell started to multiply and form all of the cells that we have today and the ones that are still being made.

I agree.
I think that the first cell came from a chemical reaction from the big bang. Hydrogen and some form of organic matter had to chemically react and create the first cell. The cell later divided and created the first plant species. Soon it had to adapt and create the first animals and humans, so another chemical reaction had to take place.
I believe that the first cells came from the grouping of organells. In order for the organells to to create one cell, they would have had to already have the DNA inside them. All the organells would just come together and then they would create a single cell. After that the cell would simply reproduce and create many cells.
I think cells were one organism and then cells started to reproduce rapidly and after the cells stop growing all of the cells made up tissue, organs, organ system, and finally an organism.
I also think that the first cell was made from chemical reactions. Cells are made from atoms, so the atoms probably chemically combined including the organelles and made a cell. Then the cell split and became a unicelluar organism. Then the cell started to multiply and became a multicelluar organism. Over millions and milloins of years, it formed organisms like we see today.
I agree with Savion. The cells where made up of atoms coming together.
I think that the first cell came from a random chemical reaction that occured. It suvived the reaction and divided and divided and divided and now there are toot many to count.
I think that the first cell was made from a chemical reaction that mutaed the atoms to make a cell which then would multipl and grow.
I personally believe that the first cell came from when millions of atoms were combined together. Every thing on Earth is made up of tons of atoms, including cells. However, there never was a “first cell” considering there has never been a point where there was one human on the Earth… if so, then we wouldn’t be here today. The person who discovered atoms did not discover one specific atom.
I think the first cell was created by a huge and complex chemical reaction that made the cell and that cell multiplied to make other cells.
I think that the first cell, scientifically speaking, came from a random chemical reaction that managed to survive and reproduce many other cells.
I agree with Diana and that a chemical reaction caused the first cell or even atom and it reproduced from there.
I think that the first cell come from a chemical reaction, then the cells keep on reproducing and now they are everywhere.
Well i agree with the people who said the cells started out as atoms and modified into the cells we have today. Also the organelles play a role in this, givin we need them to live and they do important jobs in the body.
There is a hypothesis called the ‘RNA world’, which states that before DNA, there was RNA. (DNA and RNA being deoxyribonucleic acid and ribonucleic acid, respectively.) This hypothesis states that, whereas modern life requires both DNA and proteins, RNA could do the job of both. Meaning RNA could hold genetic information, and RNA could multiply itself. These hundreds of billions of precellular ribosomes may have, at some point, produced proteins. They may have also produced DNA. Then, the DNA/protein age began allowing for the life forms we see today, and the RNA age came to an end. Now the question is, where did the first RNA come from? Did it just happen to form from the ‘soup’ of amino acids?
Footnote: Google Chrome’s spellcheck dictionary does not include half the words used in this comment, so writing this while it was flagging all the vocabulary was annoying.
I believe the first cell came from the nature. When the first scene of life happened I believed it let off some type of DNA that reproduced and multiplied quickly. As we all know, Nucleic acid (also known as DNA), is organic. Which means it is made up of carbon. The first life on Earth were plants. Plants release oxygen and takes in carbon. Where did Carbon from? No one knows. . . for now.
I also think that the way the cell spread is by the way it moved. The climates may have had a result of it splits and dividing. After its division, I believe it floated it’s way to a different part of land and continued to make more life and grow and the cells from that life did the same thing.
I agree with Cindy, I think that the origional cell came from groups of organelles that had all of the DNA already stored inside of them and all these organelles had to do was just make one of them and the cells would reproduce by themselves.
I think the first cell came from a type of bacteria that combined with an organelle. The two comined might have created a cell. The cell reproduced and created more and more cells.
Well, since everything is made of atoms, wouldn’t a cell be made of atoms? I think that the atoms somehow combined to make some sort of life-form: the first cell.
I think that the first cell came from an reaction that wasn’t supposed to happen and this cell began to live and reproduce and kept on living and that’s how the cell began in my mind.
I agree, with Ryan that the first cell was made of an atom/ organism of some sort having a chemical reaction to its surrounding and the cell actually survived and managed to split and then over the millions of years the cell mutuated and eventually helped us to what we are today
I think the first cell came from a very rare chemical reaction between atoms. When the “big bang” happened it released millions of particles out into the emptiness of the universe those particles became planets, stars, galaxies, and everything else. Once the planets were created and there was a stable environment for life particles bonded together to create the first cell.
I personally think that in the early earth, when it there were pools of minerals and other things essential for life, they mixed just right and created the first cell. I realize that this is something that seem almost impossible, but I think that if this is true, we may be able to create synthetic cells. But if this is true, then the cell theory might need to be revised.
I don’t really actually know where the first cell came from, but I know that there were cells in the time of the dinosouars. what I really think is that they were created from bacteria. Maybe as the bacteria multiplied a chemical change took place that affected the composure of the bacteria causeing a whole new different spiecies know as the living cell. All of this could have taken place do to gases or noble gases that came from volcanos or any gas sight. the bacteria could have been feeding off of a near by source that caused it to change. Who knows (of course I’m looking at this from a scientifical point of view.)
I believe cells were formed by organelles. There are organelles inside every cell. I think that all the organelles and macromolecules formed together and made a cell.
I think that the first cell came from alot of atoms coming together b/c atoms are smaller than cells and atoms are inside of cells so im guessing tht some random atoms grouped together on accidentand created a cell
I think it had something to do with what we learned in class either something like the microbiology or macromolecules and i also think there had to be a stage that led to the cell being created then when the cell was created it created another one of itself which is cellular reproduction.

I think that the very first cell was made by a very complex chemical reaction. This reaction created the first cell which then divided and made more cell after this the cell mutated and evolved and eventually created multicellular organisms. These organisms then managed to reproduce and create more multicellular organisms. This would be the beginning of life.
i aggree with savion , i think that cells are made up of atoms .

I think the first came from [yeah, God] but also like Cindy said a grouping of organelles, where atoms came together to create a living life form, and formed different functions which over time became perfected, so it formed a perfect machine. Then the cell multiplied…. and soon multi-cellular life was created.
I believe the first cell came from a chemical reaction, cells are made up of atoms, like everything else. A chemical reaction involving other elements came together to form organelles, which then came together to form the first ever cell! After being able to survive it wasn’t long until the cell started reproducing, and that’s how we got to where we are today.
The scientific principle that life only comes from life is called biogenesis. There may have once been an exception to this, that the first living cell came about as very complexed chemicals started to form life without help of a creator. This is spontaneous generation, and just about everyone knows that this is anti-scientific, so the name has been changed to abiogenesis which come from roots that mean”not biogenesis”. That is my theory on how the first cell came about.

I agree
I think that the first cell was a single celled organism that was made by a chemical reaction and managed to survive and reproduce. It then mutated into a better organism that survived better and then that organism mutated into something else and etc.
I think the first cell came from a chemical reaction in which a cell was created. A chemical reaction involving elements created the cell. The cell was created and made a unicellular organism. The first cell reproduced and created more of itself to create a multicellular organism. Eventually there were more multicellular organisms who reproduced to create more of itself. So I think the first cell was created by a chemical reaction.
the first cells came form the dinosaurs or even earlier .. WHOA .. so the first cell came from the earth when it was first created so thats where the first cell came from.
I believe that the first cel came from multiple atoms coming together. I rectntly learned that atoms are smaller that cells (no comment) so I figured that ” Hey! Cells could’ve been made from atoms! Duh, no brainer!”
Cells came from the grouping of organelles. The DNA or genetic information contributed to the formation of the cell because they are present in each cell. If one cell is created, then it reproduces and makes more cells!
I believe the first cell came from (other than God)atomic splicing rusulting from the Type Ia Supernova Remnant .The cells divided just as they did with the Type Ia Supernova Remnant in the Large Magellanic Cloud galaxy billions of years ago, and is it a coincidence that it is just 170,000 light-years away from us? I think not, because a supernova, one of the most powerful explosions in the galaxy could definitly mess with atoms atomic structures.
