The Book Without Words – Period 2 Discussion Area
PERIOD 2 Discussion Area – In this area you are to discuss all of the Discussion Questions posted.
- Discussion Question #1 is CLOSED.
- Discussion Question #2 is OPEN.
Consider what the discussion question is. Be sure to address the question.
STEP 1 – UNDERSTAND THE QUESTION.
STEP 2 – ADDRESS THE QUESTION (50%). (Question in the answer, your answer, details to support your answer)
- Give us your entire thought process.
- Give us details from the text to prove you know what you’re talking about. Otherwise, who knows what you’re basing your thoughts on?
- Your details do not have to be direct word-for-word quotes (mainly because you do not have the books at home).
- STILL, give us a clear idea of what thing(s)from the book you are basing your answer on. You can paraphrase, in other words.
- Please address the topic of your choice in as much detail as possible. The more detail you give us, the better we will understand your thought process, AND the better we will be able to argue/discuss with you.
- You see, if you give us your entire thought, we can see if there is anything wrong with it – any faulty logic going on there. We are in this discussion to sharpen our wits and gain the ability to think better than we ever have.
STEP 3 – Post a response to classmates (50%).
- Option #1 – If you agree with someone’s answer . . .
. . . Then explain what you agree with – be specific. And extend or expand on the thought you are agreeing with by backing your comment up with details from the text, from your own life, whatever is appropriate. You could agree with someone and support your agreement with other more, unused descriptive details from the book, other books, or your own life. Get it?- Option #2 – If you disagree with someone’s answer . . . . . . Then justify your disagreement by taking a stance backed up by your own details from the text.
Quote B:
In Chapter 3 Section 11 when Damian figurativley says “The more one sins, the heavier one gets”, to me, means that when you sin or do a wrong thing and continue to do these wrong things you’re guilt will build up. Then this guilt that continues to build up, due to the excessive wrong doings, causing you to feel terrible and there for become “heavy” with the burden of guilt being kept inside you.
A agree with Nicholas A. because it really does seem that when you do, do the wrong things you do end up possibly developing paranoia and in a way become over obsessed with everything that you do and worrying weather “You’re caught” or something along those lines.
I’m doing Quote A: “It is not my death I fear . . . but my life,” says Sybil in Chapter 3 Section 9.
To me, the quote “It is not my death I fear . . . but my life,” means that Sybil is not afraid of actually dying, but she is scared of her actual life and the events that she has to go through. A perfect example would be, in the beginning of the book, Sybil seems grateful about living in a home rather than on the streets. It’s as if she takes life as it comes and is thankful for the things she has. As the book goes on, she gets very concerned at the point when Thorston is allegedly dead. She fears being taken away by Master Bashcraft or facing any other type of consequence for being Thorston’s apprentice in his alchemy. Therefore, the quote “It is not my death I fear . . . but my life,” clearly states that Sybil is afraid of life, not death.
I agree with TYler she is approached by many obstacle. But I still do sit on the fact her self esteem is crushed
* Quote A “It is not my death I fear . . . but my life,” says Sybil in Chapter 3 Section 9.
I think that Sybil says this because of how people treats her in life.Sybil is a independent girl faced with many complex challenges in which she cant handle. With no one around to help her she is constantly overwhelmed and defeated. Also with Odo giving her self esteem problem she struggles to overide them. For example,As stated on pages 22-23 Odo tells her that she is a “nothing”.Which also leads her to believe she looked bad,was worthless, ignorant,a homely girl, dependent and alone. No one wishes to live a life in which your foundation is torn down.
“It is not my death I fear . . . but my life,” says Sybil in Chapter 3 Section 9. This quote to me means that Sybil is frightened by what is to transpire. In the story she is confronted with many obstacles such as her soon to come death by Master Thorston and his quest for immortality, and the question if Brother Wilfred can really be trusted. In the book, it also shows that Sybil really doesn’t have anything to look forward to in life, which tells us she isn’t afraid of death itself. That is what I think “It is not my death I fear . . . but my life,” says Sybil in Chapter 3 Section 9 means.
I agree with Erin W. when she says “the more one does sinful things the more they are burdened, making them in a sense heavier. Damien said this because all his life he’s had to do things that are sinful and yet he’s still unhappy and alone.” I agree because Damien has done sinful things and he is alone.

Qoute:B
“The more one sins the heavier one gets,” says Damian figuratively in Chapter 3 Section 11. By saying this,he means that by doing sinister things(like stealing,etc..), you build up more and more guilt and paranoia. You have a big burden on your hands thinking things like,”will I get cought?”, or,”Did anyone see me and if they did,how many?”. Eventually, you’d probobly crack under the pressure and either turn youself in or start to go crazy(depending on how bad the crime is really..)So eventually you’ll feel the weight of the world on your shoulders. In the book, Sybil lies to Alfric and Damien by saying she has magic, which in turn, odo used a spell to move something and she said she did it. Later on though, Alfric asked Sybil if she could really do magic, but she then explained to him that it was really Odo doing the magic. To me, as she was explaining it,she seemed to have a bit of remorse.
I agree with Danielle when she says that Sybil isn’t afraid of death, but what might happen to her while she is alive. In the book, she was constantly stressed about what to do when Thorston died since she would lose everything(a home,food,etc.).To me, this is saying she’s afraid of what might happen,or in other words, she is afraid of the future. Many of us are also afraid of the future and can see where she is coming from.
” The more one sins the heavier one gets” said by Damian figureatively in chp. 3 sec.11 to me means the more one does sinful things the more they are burdened, making them in a sense heavier. I think Damien said this because all his life he’s had to do things that are sinful and yet he’s still unhappy and alone.
I agree with Amanda L. because I do believe that Sybil is afraid her life will get worse and she knows that at least in death she’ll be more at peace.
“It is not my death I fear . . . but my life,” Stated Sybil in chapter 3 section 9. I’ve considered this quote because the first think that comes to mind is the fact that she isn’t afraid of death!!! I believe this quote means that Sybil has so many things going on that she isn’t able to worry about death. Sybil’s future is unknown in the fact that she doesn’t know what to expect. Since Thorston is her owner and provider she is afraid that something might happen that will force to be alone in the streets..
Thank You
i agree with Victoria, sybil is afraid of what will happen now and not at the time of her death.
Quote A “It is not my death I fear… but my life.”
My opinion to what Sybil is really thinking is that she is not afraid to die; she just fears whets happened or going to happen in her life. In the book she is a servant to a very old man named Thorston. Throughout the book Sybil faces many challenges. She must solve the mystery about what Thorston is doing. She finally found out that Thorston who she trusted was really trying to kill her in order to make himself younger. I think that she is having a very rough and scary life and that is what I think Sybil is referring to when saying, “It is not my death I fear…but my life”.
I agree with Tori when she said that Sybil was not afraid to die, but more concerned with how her life will go. She already is having a very tough life. So to me she would rather die.
