The Book Without Words – Period 6 Discussion Area
PERIOD 6 Discussion Area – In this area you are to discuss all of the Discussion Questions posted.
- Discussion Question #1 is CLOSED.
- Discussion Question #2 is OPEN.
Consider what the discussion question is. Be sure to address the question.
STEP 1 – UNDERSTAND THE QUESTION.
STEP 2 – ADDRESS THE QUESTION (50%). (Question in the answer, your answer, details to support your answer)
- Give us your entire thought process.
- Give us details from the text to prove you know what you’re talking about. Otherwise, who knows what you’re basing your thoughts on?
- Your details do not have to be direct word-for-word quotes (mainly because you do not have the books at home).
- STILL, give us a clear idea of what thing(s)from the book you are basing your answer on. You can paraphrase, in other words.
- Please address the topic of your choice in as much detail as possible. The more detail you give us, the better we will understand your thought process, AND the better we will be able to argue/discuss with you.
- You see, if you give us your entire thought, we can see if there is anything wrong with it – any faulty logic going on there. We are in this discussion to sharpen our wits and gain the ability to think better than we ever have.
STEP 3 – Post a response to classmates (50%).
- Option #1 – If you agree with someone’s answer . . .
. . . Then explain what you agree with – be specific. And extend or expand on the thought you are agreeing with by backing your comment up with details from the text, from your own life, whatever is appropriate. You could agree with someone and support your agreement with other more, unused descriptive details from the book, other books, or your own life. Get it?- Option #2 – If you disagree with someone’s answer . . . . . . Then justify your disagreement by taking a stance backed up by your own details from the text.
Quote A ” It is not my death I fear… but my life”, says Sybil in Chapter 3 Section 9. When Sybil says this she means she is not worrying about dying but how her life will end up when she is living. Her attitude towards life has changed through out the book.In the beggining she is thankfull that Thorston has given her food and shelter. Then she finds out that when he is done swallowing all the stones she and Odo will be killed by Thorston. Even though Odo wants the gold he gives up the book to Brother Wilfred to save his life and Sybil’s life. So she is more afraid of her living in her life now than death itself.
I agree with Naghma that sin after sin they build up inside in you and you feel so guilty and start telling the truth all the time.
Quote A:”It is not my death I fear….but my life,” says Sybil in ch 3 secion 9.This means that she is less afraid of dying than living her horrific and stressful life. Everybody is depending upon her and putting stress upon her. For example,Damian is depending upon her to tell him about Master Thorston’s secret(otherwise he might tell Bashcroft that Thorston is dead),Odo is always critizing her and Brother Wilfred is counting upin her to bring the stones and The Book Without Words.Additionally she sometimes feels that she hasn’t accomplished much and that she has very little time to accomplish anything or she wonders what will happen to Alfric when she dies. Her attitude toward life has changed completely.in the begginning of the book she was glad that Thorston picked her out of the streets and that she din’t die.Now she is wishing that she was dead.I can connect this to a person’s life because at a point in time, everbody depends on you to do something and if you dont you feel unaccomplished and unsuccesful to an extent that you could almost kill yourself because you are depressed.
I agree with Nicole B on her statement that when Sybil dies, she will be in a happier place because she leads a hard life not physically, but mentally too because of all the stress and the woory everbody puts on her.Dying might be like a break from all of this.
I agree with jennifer because sybil has challenges of trying to save her life what comes with those challenges is fear that she might not succeed.
Quote B “The more one sins the heavier one gets, “says Damien figuratively in chapter3 section 11.
This quote I believe meant to me is when a person lies it becomes part of that person’s daily life. As time passes deep within that person those lies accumulate into guilt. Fear becomes that person worst enemy. Fear of being discovered . Lying makes people act and think very strange. They turn against friends, family, and etc. In Thorston case in chapter four, when thorston answers the door to bashcroft and he did not recongnize him. This is the part when thorston lies about his age. In chapter 4, he stole the book from Brother Wilfrid. Brother wilfrid tells Sybil he wants proof that thorston stole the book.
Quote A “It is not my death I fear . . . but my life,” says Sybil in Chapter 3 Section 9. I believe this means that sybil would rather die than live her horrible life. Her attitude towards life has changed through out the book. In the beggining she is greatful that Thorston has given her food and shelter. Then she finds out that when he is done swallowing all the stones she and Odo will die. Even though Odo wants the gold he is willing to give up the book to Brother Wilfred to save his life and Sybil. so she is more afraid of her living in her life now than death itself.
I agree with Ashely O. because Master Thorston is using sybil to regain youth and escape death. It says in the book that this is the only reason took her in his home. Also, why he would only take in a thirteen year old girl. That’s because the book told him that was what he needed to make the stones.
Quote A- “It’s not my death I fear… but my life” -Sybil in Chapter 3 Section 9
When Sybil says those words she is talking to Odo about Master Thorston coming back to life. She was telling Odo how Brother Willfrid told her that when Thorston’s immortal spell is over her life will also be over. I think Sybil feels that she didn’t leave an impact on anyone in the world. She is only 12 years old,she can’t read or write, and she has no money. She also didnt have a chance to live yet. I think she wants to get out on her own and not work for Thorston. Since Thorston needs her life for energy, I think she also feels she is being used.
I Agree with Marcus B. because if you have a conscience and do something bad to someone then you will pray for that person to be safe as if the thing never happened.
QUESTION B- How does Avi deliver a crisp clear look at the characters throughout the world in the book?
Avi delivers a crisp and clear look at the characters throughtout the world in the book by giving full imaginable detail and not leaving out any detail on the character(s)he is describing.Especially when he was describing how Master Bashcroft;when he said that hes doubling chins were like stairs from a palace. Just by those words he gave a very clear image on how his chin looks like.
Quote C : Alfric said that his father used to enjoy telling his children, “The shorter the sermon, the longer the truth,” in Chapter 3 section 11.
What Alfric’s father means the person’s sermon (pray) is more truth than actual prayer.Like if someone was praying for someone to come back from a coma or something, the truth would come out like if they put that person in a coma in the first place.
I agree with Naghma that sins build up inside in you and you feel guilty and start telling the truth all the time.
I agree with Gyan because a couple of words can mean something everlasting and profound. It is just like a picture can talk a million words.
Quote C: “The shorter the sermon, the longer the truth,” in Chapter 3 section 11.
To me this quote means that a sermon, or speech, can be a couple words or sentences and still have everlasting meaning. An example of the quote is what Odo said in the same section “Live long enough, and all become orphans.”
I agree with Gerardo R because if you say fewer things about something the the meaning can still be everlasting.
* Quote C : Alfric said that his father used to enjoy telling his children, “The shorter the sermon, the longer the truth,” in Chapter 3 section 11.
Alfric’s father was poor but wise. What I think the quote means is that when you have to say something about somebody’s life then the less things you say about them the better it feels because you’re only bringing what’s necessary and if you say alot it looks like and, it sometimes happens, you are making things up. Sometimes when I get blamed of doing something, my mom says that if I just say I didnt do it,Im ok, but if I start giving excuses then she knows Im lying,so now I just say I didnt do it. In Alfric’s position the less people said about them the better because being poor they might have not wanted other people to know that, just things like they were good people in life period. Giving a short sermon they were saying the truth about them and nothing else.
Quote A “It is not my death I fear . . . but my life,” says Sybil in Chapter 3 Section 9. This quote basically mean Sybil is not afraid of death she is afraid of her life. For example, she wants to know what will happen if is not there anymore what will Odo and Alfric do without her. Brother Wilfrid want Sybil to die in order to get his hands on the stones and The Book Without Words. He alsotold her that if her Master, Master Thorston lives she will then die in his place. That is what I think Sybil is trying to say in that quote.
I agree with Ashley O. and Nicole B. because they both give you enough information from the text to understand what they are trying to say without even reading the book. They also support very well. You also understand based on the information they gave us what sybil is really saying and what she actually means.
Quote A,”it’s not my death I fear… but my life” says sybil in chapter 3 section 9. I belive that this quote means that Sybil is more scared of what will happen in her future then her death. I think she feels this way because when thorston was “dying” the first time in Chapter 1 section 6 Odo kept telling her if she let thorston die before he told her the secret of making gold then, they both would be left on the streets with no where to go. Ever scince then she has been stressing about the gold as much as evryone eles because she dosen’t know what will happen to her in the long run.
I agree with Layla S. because Sybil has so much on her plate all the time. Layla right was when she said that Sybil would probably be happier dead.
Quote A “It is not my death I fear . . . but my life,” says Sybil in Chapter 3 Section 9.
What do I think it meant:
I think it means she fears her life is becoming terrible and is not going the way she wants it to.I say this because shes adopted, her master keeps dying (and looking younger each time), and she doesn’t know what she’s going to do or, how she’s going to live without Master Thorstan. She has the pressures of Mistree Weebly, the revee and the monk on her back.
I agree with Layla s. because she really doesn’t fear her life and she rather die.and that she wish her life was better.
Quote B “the more one sins the heavier one gets,” says Damian figuratively in Chapter 3 Section 11. To me this means that the more sins you commit, the more that they jumble up inside of you. Most people lie at times, or do something that they know is wrong. After awhile, they feel terrible in the inside, and they always end up doing the right thing, and it makes them feel better. By doing this, they are making the jumble inside of you, weigh less. So when Damian states this in chapter 3, he really means that all the sins that Thorston had commited, are still jumbled inside of him, making him weigh heavily.
I hope that made sense…
I agree with Anjelica M. because Sybil does have many things in the book to worry about. And she is very pressured. Just like Anjelica said, if Sybil makes one wrong mistake, it can totally change her future. Sybil must really feel nervous, and curious on what is going to happen in her future.
I pick “the more one sins, the heavier one gets” which was said by Damian in Chapter 3, Section 11. What he meant was that if you sin it creates guilt. The more guilt you have creates a heavy conscience. The way Damian said it though it sounded as though he meant that sins create PHYSICAL weight.
I agree with Jessica because she said that the more one sins, the harder it is to move on. If you are guilty of something you could probably never get over it and that would prevent you from starting a new life.
Me, I agree with Nicole B because if you do think about how you would feel if you were Sybil being pressured by death and more then that could bring up those feelings of confusion that may lead to that alternative of Life or Death.
