Here’s DISCUSSION QUESTION #2:
Discuss the nature of Sherlock Holmes’ friendship with Dr. Watson. How highly does Holmes value Watson’s opinion? Why is Watson important to Holmes? Why is Holmes important to Watson? Support your answer with details from the text.
Holmes and Watson seem to have a very strong relationship. They always listen to eachother and respect eachother. Holmes thinks highly of Watson’s opinion because it might lead to a new clue or it helps him make a final judgement. Also, he is usually asking for Watson’s opinion. Watson is important to Holmes because Watson usually helps Holmes when solving a case. Like in chapter 5, Watson agreed to go to Baskerville Hall with Baskerville since Watson wouldnt be able to go for to long. Now Holmes is important to Watson because Watson has learned many thing things from Holmes. For instance, he learned Holmes methods of thinking.
I agree with what Danielle said the most, especially about what Holmes thinks of Watson’s opinion. Like how she mentioned how Holmes usually asks for Watson’s opinion. She really covered everything, so it’s kind of hard to add something new.
ANSWER:
I think that Holmes values Watson’s opinion because they seem to have to have a very strong , friendly relationship. Holmes always asks for Watson’s opinion on almost every clue they find. Watson is important to Holmes and Holmes is important for Watson for the same reason, they both respect each other and their ideas.
RESPONSE:
I agree with Rebecca B because as she said “Holmes needs him to help him solve the mystery and give him all the clues that he needs.” There would be no story or no plot that could be solved if one didn’t help the other, or if one didn’t exist.
Holes values Watson’s opinion a lot. Watson is important to Holmes because Watson helps Holmes come to a final conclusion by laying everything out so Holmes can solve the problem. Also Holmes said that Watson ignites the flame and might not solve the problem himself but helps someone else do it. Holmes is important to Watson because Watson can’t solve everything. He can lay things out and solve part of the problem but he needs Holmes to correct him and finish solving the problem.
Response: I agree with Katlyn D. Watson and Holmes have a good relationship and without Watson Holmes would have a hard time solving a mystery because there would be no one to lay the clues out.
I agree with Katlyn D.Watson and Holmes build on respect and trust.Trust builds in a good friendship
Watson and Holmes friendship is very trusting.Holmes values Watson’s opinion because he is always asking him what does he think of this before he comes to a final conclusion.Watson is important to Holmes because they both can share things to come to a better result as well. Therefore without Holmes,Watson will be holding all the burdens. But with Holmes they can share
I agree with Kaitlyn D.
Holmes and Watson’s relationship is based on mutual respect for each other. Like I said, there is nobody better to be by your side in a tight place, just like a brother would do.
The nature of Holmes and Watson’s friendship is like that of brothers. Holmes values Watson’s opinion very much. Holmes respects Watson’s opinion as Holmes most always finds Watson’s opinion helpful in solving the crime. Holmes is important to Watson because he gives him a job and he likes working with Holmes.
I base this on an excerpt from the book that said that Watson thought of Holmes like a brother. Also the feeling of the book relays a message that Holmes and Watson are good friends and value each other.
I made a mistake. On the fourth sentence i meant to say “What he means is that Watson may not come off as the smartest person, but in reality what he says is important to Sherlock.”
-thanks.
I agree with Rebecca’s opinon when she said that Watson is important to Holmes because he needs his help to solve the mystery(s). I agree because you do often find Holmes asking what Watson thinks, In order for him to deliberate or solve the problem/mystery.
ANSWER:
Mr. Holmes and Dr. Watson have a very strong relationship. Homles values Watson’s point of view very highly because he always assists when it comes to solving a case. If you recall, Holme’s had said to Watson, “It may be that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light”. What he means is that Watson may not come off as the smartest person, but in reality what he says is important Sherlock. Also, Sherlock is important to Dr. Watson as well. In Watson’s mind, Holmes is an intelligent person and he seems to appreciate how their idea’s mesh. For example, in Chapter 1 Holmes says to Watson: “Well, Watson, what do you make of it?”. That clearly shows how they appreciate each others opinions.
RESPONSE:
I agree with Kara on how she says that they have “…a very friendly and trusting relationship”. But, on the other hand, Holmes sometimes ignores Watson’s views. For instance, on page 17 in Chapter 1; Holmes says “I am afraid, my dear Watson, that most of your conclusions were erroneous”. That basically means that Watson’s theory is merely wrong and that Sherlock is positive that he is correct.
I think the relationship between Holmes and Dr. Watson is friendly and full of respect .Holmes once said about Watson that” There is no man better worth having when you are in a tight place”(pg.67).Holmes values Watsons opinon very highly because you often find him asking Watson what he thinks about something before he deliberates.Watson is important to Holmes because with out him most of Holmes’ cases would be harder to solve, and he would often find himself in a pickle (not literally).Holmes is important to Watson because he gained most of his knowledge and experience from Holmes. Also if you recall in the beginning of the book Watson mentioned that Holmes had cleared his name.
When you post something and it does not show up, it may be pulled for one reason or another. This does not mean it is deleted. It is most probably in “moderation”. That means it is waiting for me to approve it.
Do not despair.
I am in and out all weekend long and thorughout the week. I am always checking the moderation area.
Keep the discussion going!
You’re all doing great.
Mr Moshe! i did it and it just disappeared and its not showing up. 🙁
i have two witneses that saw me do it.
I agree with krissa, i agree with here because she use information from the text.
Responding to Kryssa
I agree when you said that Watson had to have been friends with Holmes for a long time in order to know his methods. If you don’t really know someone, you can’t understand their methods, let alone use them. I also agree with you when you said that he uses Watson’s opinions to get a defferent point of view. When you have a new point of view, you can sometimes see things that weren’t clear the first time.
I believe that Homles and Watson have a very friendly and trusting relationship. They treat each other with respect and know each other very well. “Let me hear you reconstruct the man by an examination of it.” (Chapter 1, Paragraph 5).
Holmes values Watson’s opinion very highly. He always asks his opinion and takes it into consideration. “Well, Watson, what do you make of it?” (Chapter 1, Paragraph 2).
Watson is very important to Holmes. He is very smart and helps Holmes discover new observations. “It may be that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light. Some people without possessing genius have a remarkable power of stimulating it. I confess, my dear fellow, that I am very much in your debt.” (Chapter 1, Paragraph 13).
Holmes is important to Watson because he has gained all of his experience from Holmes. “I was proud, too, to think that I had so far mastered his system as to apply it in a way which earned his approval.” (Chapter 1, Paragraph 14). “You know my methods. Apply them!” (Chapter 1, Paragraph 25). These also suggest that Watson knew how Holmes thought and was able to help him. He had observed him and knew how to respond.
Mr. Sherlock Holmes values Dr. Watsons opinions and thoughts very greatly. As he told Sir Henry, Dr. Watson would be perfect for any kind of job, especialy spying, which was the job. Dr. Watson is very important to Sherlock Holmes because Watson is his trusty assistant. Watson draws the cunclusion to the mystery, which Holmes can’t usualy figure out on his own.
I agree with Sophia because they do have a very healthy, trustworthy relationship. They respect each other very much.
Sherlock Holme’s and Dr. Watson’s friendship is like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich bec ause they go perfect together. Homles values Dr. Watson’s opinion very highly because he assists him when it comes to solving a certain case. Waton is very important to Holmes, because if you remember what Holme’s had stated to Watson, “It may be that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light”. What Sherlock means is that Watson might not be the smartest person, but what he says relflects of off other people’s actions. Sherlock is important to Dr. Watson because in Watson’s eyes, Holmes is very smart and can use his skills to perform tasks with Watson’s skills.
————————————————-
I agree with Erin W. because her statement about Watson and Holmes makes much sense to me and the statement was, “Holms is important to Watson too because to Watson, Holmes has a brilliant mind and is very outgoing. “
sorry i didnt finish my paragragh. Watson is important to homles because with out him this mystery would be hard to solve. For example, when Sir Henery needed somone to be with him at baskevill hall Holmes chose Watson because he was a close friend and he knew that he was trust worthy and that he would be a good spy. Now Holmes is important to Watson because Holmes is the better detective, for example when they were analyzing the cane in chapter one he parctically new everthing and he knew what kind of dog the bit marks were from. so watson needs Holmes because with out him , he wouldnt be able to solve the mystery.
my response-
i agree with reabecca because it is true that Holmes is always asking Watson for his opinion, for example in chapter one they were both giving there own opinions and they found out what bit the cane by sharing their opinion with each other.
I agree with Helber A, but I don’t think you captured the books feel of Holmes and Watson. Your explanation pretty much covers the two characters in every book they’ve been in.
I think that the relationship between Dr. Watson and Mr. Holmes is a very mature. They both value each otheres opinions because they need to listen to each other because they need team work in this investigation. For example in chapter one when they were analyazing the cane that they found, Watson was telling his opinion to Holmes and he listin and found out that his opinions were wrong that is team work.
I think that Holmes and Watson hold a big deal of respect between those two.It seems that Holmes values Watson’s opinion alot.Though it sems like Watson doesn’t think that when he says some things that he will give Holmes idea.
“You are a conductor of light”
Sherlock means that Watson is someone who says good ideas and statments without thinking about it
I think Watson is important to Holmes because if Watson wasn’t with Homes then Holmes wouldn’t have some of his good ideas. Also i agree with Contanza because them staying togeter is a crutial thing because if they had spilt up it probably would have been a little harder to catch up with if they had caught he stalker/spy.
I agree with Kryssa C’s response because I too feel that Holmes relies on Watson to come up with a solution.
I think the nature of Sherlock Holmes friendship with Dr. Watson is very well appreciated. They both rely on each other to find a solution to the problem that lies ahead. Yes, I do believe that Holmes values Watson’s opinion highly. For example when Watson had stated his theory about the Baskerville case, Holmes used Watson’s idea to compare to his own and came up with a reasonable solution. Not only does Holmes value Watson’s opinion but Watson is also important to Holmes. Why? because Watson is a good friend and sticks with Holmes throughout the tough times. He also is a good spy for Holmes. As stated in the text Holmes said “It maybe that your not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light”. Meaning Watson may be hidden in the shawdows but he is soaking up all the important information, or in other words being a spy. Holms is important to Watson too because to Watson, Holmes has a brilliant mind and is very outgoing. Also because he has great adventures with Holmes.
I think that the Friendship between Sherlock Holmes and Dr.Watson is very mature and highly respected. They consider each other’s Opinions and they take their time and explain things to each other.
I think Watson is Important to Holmes and Holmes is important to Watson for many reasons. For example they stayed together when Holmes and Watson were looking and trying to find the spy, And He didnt want to stay alone so they stayed with each other.
I agree completely with Kryssa C’s opinion about how Holmes is important to Watson because he did learn his way of thinking from observing Holmes and being his friend for that long.
I agree with Kryssa’s opinion all the way. Holmes values Watson’s opinion and always asks for it. Plus Watson is Holmes’s source of information and Holmes is Watson’s source of experience.
It seems to be that Holmes really values Watson’s opinion. This is because usually, Holmes likes to get more opinions and information than his own before making a conclusion. He likes to get every bit of information or other possibility straight so that he can get the best answer possible. “But, tell me, Watson, what do you make
of our visitor’s stick?” -Holmes (C-1, P-4) He usually asks Watson’s opinion before stating his.
Watson is important to Holmes because Watson is his partner. He helps keep the information straight. Plus, because he is learnig from Holmes himself, they think, sort- of, alike. Not to mention, Watson is like a supervisor in a way. He looks over things and makes sure there were no possibilities or facts they might have overlooked. “I confess, my dear fellow, that I am very much in your debt.” -Holmes (C-1, P-13) This shows that Holmes is glad to have Watson there to give him other information.
Holmes is important to Watson because Holmes is Watson’s main source of experience. Watson learns to make conclusions based on what he sees and what makes sense. He learned all of this from Holmes himself. Holmes guides him and with every mistake Watson makes, he learns more. Holmes tells Watson “You know my methods. Apply them!” (C-1, P-24) This shows that Holmes has taught Watson his methods and thinks that now that he knows them, he should use them.
Hey, y’all. I have to let you know that I am enjoying the discussion, BUT…You have to use proper rules of capitalization, spelling, and punctuation so that anyone who reads the discusison(s) would have no prolem following the train of thought.
Do not use “2” instead of to, too, or two
Get it?
Jodi-ann, you said, “even though it says in the book that Holes values Watson’s opinion. His behaviour/attitude says other wise.”
First, proofread your posts before you click “submit”.
Second, examples from the text paint a pretty clear picture of a strong trusting and warm friendship shared between Holmes and Watson. If you could prove to me, using a good number of details from the text, that Holmes’ attitude and behavior indicate that he does not value Watson’s opinion I might consider agreeing with you.
I agree with Rebecca B. on how Holmes and Watson both need each others opinions. With out one or the other the book would be point less or they would need someone else to help solve the mistery.
I think that Holmes values Watson’s opinion because Holmes is an okay detective. He is always asking for Watson’s opinion on different things trough out the book so far. Watson is important to Holmes because Holmes needs him to help him sole the mystery and give him all the clues that he gives him. Holmes is important to Watson because Holmes is the one solving his case. Without Holmes the case would never get solved. So really Holmes needs Watson, and Watson needs Holmes.
I agree with Helber in how Holmes is usually right rather than wrong. All the things that Holmes has come to conclusion about have helped them come further.
In my opinion, the relationship between Dr.Watson and Holmes is a very respected, very good natured, and a very friendly realtionship. They are basically pretty good friends and have utter rescpect and trust for one another. They are like Best Friends.
I think that Holmes values Watson’s opinions very high because in the text when Watson observes something, Holmes takes that observation to help him think about what is happeneing and it also in a way helps him figure out other details that maybe he possibly could have missed before.
Watson, to me, is important to Holmes because as Holmes said in the text about Watson being a conductor of light and meaning that he really is quite bright and that with his observations (even if not correct) can help lead Holmes into finding evidence, clues, or new possible ideas as to the case they are working on.
And lastly, Holmes is important to Watson because without Holmes in the first place, Watson wouldn’t be able to be that “conductor of light”. Holmes is where Watson learned how to observe such things wich help Holmes out. Watson learned from Holmes the techniques he uses to even make the observation. That also shows how they are pretty good friends.
i agree with krissa, i think shes right about how holmes thinks of watson
i think that watson’s opinion is very much valued by holmes because he tells watson 2 help him out alot, and if he didnt think watsons opinion was ggood then he wouldnt ask for watsons help in the story.
watson is important to holmes because there is no one 2 help him, to give him llittle clues he finds out by himself, or 2 help him get infornation.
holmes is imporatant to watson because i dont think that watson is a good enough detective to do the work all by himself.
I agree with Kryssa the most. I think she makes a very good point about how Watson is important to Holmes and everything. Also the quotes she found were really good. I had trouble finding some in the text.
Watson is important to Holmes because he needs a second person to questions his theory on something, or think it out with him. Watson’s oppinon matters highly to Holmes because without his thought and view on something, the story would be as Jamesa said, pointless. For example, when they were talking about the walking stick Holmes asked for Watsons oppinon. “I confess, my dear fellow, that I am very much in your debt.” Holmes said. He is saying that he relies on Watson. Holmes is important to Watson because Watson gets all his theorys and ideas from Holmes. For example, What Holmes says gives Watson an idea so that he could tell Holmes. Its like Holmes thought of something but from what Holmes states, Watson comes up with something else. Its like Watson is Holme’s wingman- his assistant. When Holmes states this “Do none suggest themselves? You know my methods. Apply them!” He is saying that Watson knows him well enough to know all of his methods and the way he thinks.
I think Holmes values Watson’s opinions because in the first chapter, Holmes says:
“Well Watson, what do you make of it?”
In my opinion, when Holmes said this, he wanted to hear what Watson thought about the topic. He also to see if maybe something Watson says may help him with the case or mystery. Holmes thinks that Watson and his opinions are important because if he didn’t, then why would Holmes ask Watson for his opinions?
I think Holmes is important to Watson because as we saw in the first chapter when Holmes and Watson dicussed the Dr.Mortimer’s stick, Watson isn’t as accurate as Holmes is. Even though he isn’t always right, he is still very helpfuk. Watson usually stears Holmes in the right direction, even if he doesn’t know it. With Watson’s help and Holmes’ accuracy, they make a pretty good team.
I agree with Kryssa and Lizzett when they said that Holmes and Watson help eachother. I think that this is true because both of them express opinions and they both trust one another.
i don’t fully agree with Kryssa becaus eeven though it says in the book that Holes values Watson’s opinion. His behaviour/attitude says other wise.
Hola, my fellow classmates!! lol =]
Well.. I think Dr. Watson is important to Holmes because Mr. Holmes needs a partner or a companion has Mr. Moshe’ stated, to include different opinions toward different situtions where Dr. Watson might have a completely different view in the case.
“It maybe that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light”-Holmes (pg.3)
Mr. Holmes is important to Dr. Watson because Mr. Holmes is a bit more educated then Watson is in certain fields, so Holmes helps Watson in different issues and problems that Watson might go though and help guide him in the right direction.=]
” I confess, my dear fellow, that I am very much in your debt.” -Holmes (Chapter 1 Paragraph 13)
Sorry, Mr. Moshe that I have to use this quote, everyone is using it but its just……..AWESOME. lol
HEY EVERYONE (Yes, I’m shouting, but not in anger, in Joy :)) . . .
Make note of this entry I wrote to Kryssa C. (Period 2) Please read her posts in the Period 2 DIscussion (4th from the top), and then read my post here. Enjoy!!

Kryssa, your answers are brilliant and well thought out. I have two suggestions for you:
(1) Use fewer words.
(2) Include your citations within the text of your answers
Take a look below at what I have done with (part of) your answer. Compare your answer with my version.
Here’s my version:
Watson is important to Holmes because Holmes needs a companion such as Watson, and another point of view for certain things. As Holmes remarked, “I confess, my dear fellow, that I am very much in your debt” (C-1, P-13). Holmes expresses two things through this statement: (1) he needs Watson around for things he doesn’t see himself, and (2) he is thankful for every bit of information Watson gives him.
All I did was simplify your exact idea. I have not changed your answer. I only used fewer words.
Great work, Kryssa!! Keep it up!
“Well, Watson, what do you make of it?” -Holmes
(Chapter 1, paragraph 2)
“I confess, my dear fellow, that I am very much in your debt.” -Holmes
(Chapter 1, Paragraph 13)
“Do none suggest themselves? You know my methods. Apply them!” -Holmes
(Chapter 1, paragraph 24)
I agree with Lizzet T. about how Watson and Holmes help each other to find the answer. Because they both value each others opinions, and they both like to express their opinions. Though usually Watson tells his opinions first, then comes Holmes opinion. Holmes opinion is like a mixture of his and Watson’s opinion. Then in a way it means that Watson contributed his opinion and then Holmes comes up with the final opinion using both point of view on the situation.
Holmes values Watson’s opinions highly because Holmes seems to always need a second opinion before coming up with the final answer. Such as in the story where Holmes asks for Watson’s opinion about the stick they had found in the first chapter,
“Well, Watson, what do you make of it?” -Holmes
By that quote, Holmes wanted Watson’s opinion, and is eager to hear it so he can apply it with his answer in any way.
The reason why Watson is important to Holmes is because Holmes needs a companion such as Watson, and another point of view for certain things.
“I confess, my dear fellow, that I am very much in your debt.” -Holmes
In that sentence shows that Holmes actually needs Watson around for things that he doesn’t see himself, and that Holmes is thankful for every bit of information that Watson has given to him.
The reason why Holmes is important to Watson is because Watson gets his ideas to tell Holmes from Holmes himself, because it seems like Watson really wants to help Holmes in any way, but he can’t without information and that extra push.
“Do none suggest themselves? You know my methods. Apply them!” -Holmes
In that sentence, the phrase, “You know my methods.” means that they must been friends for a long time, because if they were friends for not too long how can Watson fully know Holmes method? Because Holmes is a somewhat ‘mysterious’ man, and it would kind of be hard to understand him if you don‘t know him long. In conclusion, each of them help each other out in times that are necessary.
Sherlock Holmes values watsons ideas because watson is the most intellegent one so his opinions or answers to question would be the most adequate. The friendship between Holmes and Watson is very important to the story because they are the main characters and they help each other out. Watson is important to holmes because he is usually right and Holmes is important to watson because he doesn’t always have the right answers but he gets clues that add up to the answer. At the end they both help each other.
Mr. Holmes values Watsons oppinion because with out his oppinions then the story would be point less. Meaning the clues that watson gave holmes wouldnt even be avalible. Such as the walking stick and the letter from the moor. Holmes is important to Watson because with out Holmes determining what the evidence was or if there were anymore clues that they needed to find, they wouldnt no any of it.
Watson values Holmes opinion alot because Holmes is usualy right rather then wrong. Watson is important to Holmes because that his partner, and his sidekick. And Holmes is important to watson because he corrects and guides him through problems.
