Here’s DISCUSSION QUESTION #2:
Discuss the nature of Sherlock Holmes’ friendship with Dr. Watson. How highly does Holmes value Watson’s opinion? Why is Watson important to Holmes? Why is Holmes important to Watson? Supporting your answer with details from the text.
I agree with Jhonny T because two heads are actually better than one. About saying these guys are like brothers i could relate to the same idea in the book. But, you should have quoted cites in the book that you got your anwsering from such as when you said Holmes is usually late in the morning.
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson have an unusual but trustful friendship. When trying to solve these optical mysteries, Holmes values Watson’s opinoin because, Dr. Watson sums up all these clues that direct them to the solution. When Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are figuring out mysteries such as the ” cane “, he was making inferences to see where it had came from. These mysteries seem to bring these two men close and close enough for them to be great friends as other people are and close to sit down and listen to their ideas and comments. These to mean much to each other and care for each because as the book said “Holmes is unusually late in the morning”, and who would know that if they werent close buddies? These two people arent just friends or mystery buddies, their so close friendstheir like brothers from other mothers.
I agree with Elinor because Holmes does trust Watson a lot because he recommended Watson to Sir Henry to protect him on his trip back to Baskerville. I also agree that Watson is Holmes sidekick because he is always around him and helping him with stuff on the case.
I agree with Elinor because I too think that Holmes and Watson trust each other. (Why else would they work together?) I also agree because of the quote she put about what Holmes said and how the book states that Holmes trusts him.
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson have an interesting friendship. When solving a mystery, Holmes values Watson’s opinoin highly because he helps find clues leading up to the resolution. Therefore, Watson is important to Holmes.Watson is like Holmes’ second opinion. For instance, when Watson discovered the cane, he was making inferences as to where it came from. That helped Holmes with his mystery. Holmes is important to Watson because if Watson has a question, or needs anything, he can depend on Holmes. Besides solving mysteries together, Holmes and Watson are friends. Just like any friend, they are important to each other. Like when Holmes refers to him as “my dear Watson”.
To solve a mystery, you need both Holmes, Watson, and their teamwork.
i agree with Brianna T’s answer. They are detective buddys and need each other. Thats why Holmes and Waston do cases together. They make each other think in ways that wouldn’t be possible if they didn’t have each other. If they didn’t work together i think that they wouldn’t be able to sovle a lot of cases.
Holmes’ and Watson have a very good and unique relationship.Holmes’ does value Watsons opinion very much.Holmes’ uses watson for guidance.Like Holmes’ said “You are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light”.Which pretty much means that Watson isnt a genius but he helps Holmes’ think and discover things.Which is also why Holmes’ is very important to Watson, Holmes’ uses Watsons ideas and brings them up to a diffeent level. They are like detective buddys and need each other to be successful.
I think Sherlock Holmes and Watson are very good friends and trust each other a lot . For example when Sir Henry asked Holmes who he should take with him back to Baskerville Holmes said “If my friend would undertake it there is no man who is better worth having at your side when you are in a tight place. No one can say so more confidently than I.” Which means that Holmes does trust Watson and that they are friends. Also Holmes and Watson are always hanging out with each other like in the beginning of the book when Watson said “Mr. Sherlock Holmes, who was usually very late in the mornings” which means he would have to spend a lot of time with him to know that. I don’t really think Holmes value Watson’s opinion that much because Holmes said “You are not yourself luminous” to Watson which means Holmes thinks Watson isn’t that smart. So he might listen to him at time, like when Holmes said “Is that convenient to you, Watson?” but mostly he makes the finally decision himself. I think Watson is important to Holmes because Watson helps Holmes at times like when Holmes can’t do something he will ask Watson to do it, like to go with Sir Henry back to Baskerville. Watson is like Holmes sidekick. Holmes is important Watson because he is like a good friend to him and its always important to have a good friend, and they also support each other and help each other on cases too when one of them is stuck they will help the other one figure it out.
When you post something and it does not show up, it may be pulled for one reason or another. This does not mean it is deleted. It is most probably in “moderation”. That means it is waiting for me to approve it.
Do not despair.
I am in and out all weekend long and thorughout the week. I am always checking the moderation area.
Keep the discussion going!
You’re all doing great.
PART 2
I agree with jhonnys answer becasue Watson and Holmes do inspire each other and help each other in ways that they dont realize themselves. They friendship is so close, like jhonny said about Watson knowing Holmes is late in the morning, he would only know that if they where very close, like brothers.
PART 1
Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes have a very close, almost brotherly friendship, kinda like symbiosis. Holmes feels that Watson’s opinions are important because they lead him to clues to solve problems in a mystery. Watson is important to Holmes because Holmes can use Watson in many ways, like getting his opinions, trying to solve the problem from his point of view, and to help find leads on his own, like in this part of the story where Holmes asks “Well, Watson, what do you make of it?”, he is curious to Watson’s opinions. Holmes is important to Watson because Holmes is WAtson’s best friend and partner in solving crimes and mysteries.
I agreen with hayley because without Watson holmes would have problems like in chapter 5, Watson wasn’t there who would be there to stay with Sir Henry Baskerville. That is why Holmes depends in Watson alot.
I agree with Liana C. when she says that when Watson gives his opinon Holmes gives nice complamints .which shows that he values Watsons opinons greatly.
Holmes values watsons opinon greatly for example in the text Holmes says that Watson helps other people become more educated around him.Watson is important to Holmes because he helps him become more educated about his solvings .Holmes is impotant to Watson.Holmes is important to watson because he always recommends Watson for the job of accompaning Henry Baskerville.
i agree with Joey because it does seem like Watson is Holmes’s inspiration, although Watson is most of the time wrong about an evidence but his errors help Holmes find out the answer, so Holmes need Watson to solve his cases.
Part 2- the response
I agree with Hayley when she said that watson himself is not a genious, but he gets holmes thinking. I think that that is something that is really true
sorry for my long answer
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are great friends indeed. You can tell that they have been great friends for a while now. You can tell this because of how well they know each other in the book. For example when Watson said “Mr. Sherlock Holmes who was usually very late in the mornings…” This shows that Watson has been with Holmes for a great deal of time. I think that Holmes values Watson’s opinion a lot, because in the first chapter of the book, Holmes asks Watson what he thinks of the stick that Watson was investigating. When Watson had given his answer, Holmes said things or compliments such as, good, excellent, and perfectly sound. I think that Watson is important to Holmes because Holmes and Watson are a pair, and they depend on each other for facts and opinions. Holmes is important to watson because Holmes has a different way of looking at things, and he also sees things that normally other people would not notice. For instance, when Dr. Mortimer got the letter, Holmes realized that some of the words were cut out of a newspaper, while moor was written in ink. That’s why Holmes and Watson have such a great friendship and depend on each other for facts and opinions.
I agree with tranicka in the fact that she siad two heads are better then one. That is exactly right in the instance. I completely disagree with James because i do not believe Watson is a rambling idiot. He’s smart he just thinks differently then Holmes and he kind of just doesn’t know how to use his knowledge properly. I wouldn not go as far as to call him a rambling idiot without Holmes.
I AGREE WITH JOANNA AND ALEX. THEY BOTH HAVE MY POINT OF VIEW ON HOW WATSON AND HOLMES ARE CLOSE.
I agree with Tranika because two heads are better than one
I agree with Haley
becuase they both rely on each other.
It takes the two of them to solve a mystery
Holmes and Watson have a great friendship
becuase Watsons has great advice for him.
He always knows the answers to the mystery.
though Holmes is great with finding hidden clues that wouldnt be so obvious to people.
Watson values Holmes opinions because he is usually right and has good advice as shown with this quote “Some people without professing genius have a remarkable way of stimulating it. I confess, my dear fellow, I am very much in your debt.” Watson is important to Holmes because he is always right. Holmes is important to Watson because he is not always right but he always finds hints to the answer.
PART 2-RESPONSE
I agree with Hayley because Watson and Holmes both rely on each other because they both have different ways of thinking. So when they put their ideas together they get the solution to the mystery, that only proves how good of a “detective team” they are.
I agree with Tranika`s answer ,about there relationship and two heads are better than one
Holmes and Watson have a very good and unique relationship. Holmes values Watson’s oppinion very highly. Holmes uses Watson for guidence. Like he said in the book “You are not yourself luminous, but you are a contductor of light”.Which means that Watson is not a genius but he helps get Holmes thinking. This makes them a very good detective team. This is one of the main reasons that Watson is important to Holmes. Some other reasons are that he’s a close companion, they seem to understand eachother, and they work good together. Holmes is important to Watson because Holmes thinks very differently and he takes Watson’s thoughts to another level. Just like i siad before he is also a companion to Watson and they are basically best friends.
well to me Holmes and Watson have a pretty nice relationship based on waht the book tells me. Holmes respects and supports Watson’s decisions and opinions as well.as said in the book “Never have I seen my friend more completely taken aback than by the cabman’s reply” It seems as though they feel comfortable with eachother which is needed in a friendship. Watson is important to holmes to the fact that holmes needs watsons support. And holmes need watson becuase hey {{2 HEADS ARE BETTER THAN 1!!!}}}

Interesting that you might see a relation between Holmes and Watson, however they do not really correlate. There is one big difference: Bonnie and Clyde were partners IN crime . . . Holmes and Watson are partners AGAINST crime.
Check out the link under EXTRA CREDIT. Find out how different these two duos actually are. See?
Alex, you said, “Watson inspires Holmes to find the answer due to the clues given by Watson.”
Can you give us an example of this from the text?
You also said, “Holmes inspires Watson to think of ways he’s never thought of before to figure out a problem that faces them.”
Would you prove this for us by finding details to support your comment?
Thanks :~]
I agree becuase the have known each other for a long time from many year of mystery solving. I also agree that watson cant solve a mystery by himself. If Holmes died Watson would be out of a job.
Holmes highly values Watsons opinion because the book says that Watsons rambling helps Holmes solve mysteries. Such as when Watson was talking Holmes eventually finds the boot. Watson’s important to Holmes because the Holmes in the book says “you are not yourself luminous but you are yourself a conducter of light.” Holmes is important to Watson becuase without Holmes, Watson is just a rambling idiet with know one to solve his mysteries.
I really agree with Alex’s thought on how watson and Holmes are like the Bonnie and Clyde of the 19th century. They go together like two matching puzzle pieces. They’re like eachothers sidekick. And what would a human be without a sidekick?
From the details in the book I can conclude that Watson and Sherlock have like a strong friendshp to the point that they can understand each other through anything, like in chapter one when Sherlock said to Watson “…You know my methods apply them”.That means that they have probaly known each other for a long time.Holmes seems like Watson’s opinion is valued really high even though Watson is not right always he helps disover a new clue with his opinion. In chapter one Sherlock said something like “You are not luminous, but you’re a conductor of light” which means that Watson is important to all the mysteries that Holmes needs to solve. Holmes is important to Watson because basically they both go together perfectly and are meant for each other like Ayobami stated. To me it seems like they would probally be lost without each other and unable to solve a full mystery by themself.
I agree with Johnny because Watson inspires Holmes to find the answer due to the clues given by Watson. Holmes inspires Watson to think of ways he’s never thought of before to figure out a problem that faces them.
Holmes and Watson are like the Bonnie & Clyde of the 19th century. They’re really good friends, colleagues, and nearly brothers. They’re always together and know so much about each other. For example, Dr. Waton said in the first sentence of the story, “Mr. Holmes is usually late in the mornings.” That gives the reader a clue about how much they’re around each other. Holmes values Watson’s opinion because Watson’s ideas are usually a little off, but they give Holmes the real answer to a problem. As Holmes said to Watson,”You are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light.” Watson is important to Holmes because he is a loyal, trustworty, and reliable. He also give Holmes ideas as I mentioned before. Holmes is important to Watson because without Holmes, Watson would not be able to solve cases by himself, if he would actually try to solve cases by himself.
Holmes and Watson a have good solid friendship. Not only they are friends but, they value eachother greatly, they inspire themselves and help each other out. You could really tell that Holmes values Watson’s opinion because in the book Holmes listens to Watson’s comments and ideas and he says that Watson’s opinions help him find the real answer. Holmes is important to Watson because they now eachother for a long time and trust eachother, there excellent friends and been their in good and bad times. They noweachother alot because even in the book it said that holmes was usually late in the morning, who would now that about their friend? They would because their are like brothers instead of juss friends
I think Holmes and Watson have a nice friendship. Holmes highly values Watson’s opinion because as it says in the book when watson gives holmes his opinion it helps holmes get the real answer.Watson is important to holmes because they have a really good relationship and holmes needs watson’s help to solve mysteries and watson is great company for him too. Holmes is important to Watson because they have a great friendship and watson knows a lot about holmes as it said in the book that holmes was usaully late in the mornings, and that day he was early. It takes a true friend to know that about someone.
Response to Alexandra G! I agree with their opinion because it is true that Watson does value Holmes friendship. And their ex. in their second paragraph is also true because it shows that Watson does seem to know a lot about Holmes!
Holmes has a really good relationship with Dr. Watson!! Holmes also values Watson’s opinion a lot because he listens to Watson. An example of this is when in chapter 5 someone had to go with sir henry for his safety then Holmes sent Watson because he couldn’t go! Holmes also shares the littlest of littlest things with Watson and an example of this is when Holmes was discussing about the 3 broken threads with Watson!! He didn’t discuss it with anyone but Watson which shows that he trusts Watson a lot!! Watson is important to Holmes because Watson is his best friend! And Holmes is important to Watson for the same reason which is that boht of them are best friends!!
In my opinion Holmes and Watson have a weird but great friendship. Holmes highly value Watson opinion; because Watson always gives his opinion in a case which help Holmes find the real answer. ex: holmes said to Watson you are not yourself luminous but you are a conductor of light without possesing genious you stimulate it. Holmes also seems to enjoy Watson’s company alot.
Holmes is important to Watson because they’re friends and Watson seems to know alot about Holmes, meaning he values that friendship ex: in the 1st page Watson said Holmes is usually late in the morning. which means he’s around him alot, and that he knows alot about him.
Holmes has a really great ralstionship with Dr. Watson. When it comes to how Homles values Dr. Watsons opinion, its more like he wants bits and pices not the whole thing. Like when it came to Watson talking about who the walking stick belonged to Holmes just took some info. For that very reason it makes Watson very important to holmes. They each have a different way of thinking which i think helps out in most of the cases. Watson also needs Holmes because you get that feeling that he wants to be like Holmes. Watson always gets half of the story he looks to Holmes sometimes to finish that answer. This is one of those friendships that won’t end because of the different way of thinking. ^_^
Sherlock Holmes’ friendship with Dr. Watson is very strong. I know this because in the story Watson said “Never have I seen my friend more completely taken aback than by the cabman’s reply”, in that sense, you can tell that Watson knows Holmes very well, and can understand how he’s feeling by his facial expressions in certain situations.
Holme’s greatly values Watson’s opinions because Holmes and Watson have two different ways of thinking and two different point of views. That is important to Holmes because Watson may have thought of something that he himself didn’t think of or may have overlooked. Watson also needs Holmes’ opinions because as we have learned, Holme’s is the more experienced detective and his opinion may be more accurate than Watson’s like in the beginning of the story when Holme’s said to Watson, “I am afraid, my dear Watson, that most of your conclusions were erroneous”.
I think that Holmes values watson’s not so much, but yet I think that he likes to here other people’s opinions. In this case, Watson’s. I believe that Watson is important to Holmes because, maybe when nobody else is there for Holmes, he always has him, becasue they have been together for a while. I also think that Watson is important to holmes because Watson can give Holmes great ideas, or opinions, and if it’s not exactly right, Holmes can mix the two opinions and there goes the answer. Holmes is important to Watson, because Holmes has a different way of thinking. For example when Watson and Holmes were investigating the cane, Watson said “I think that Dr. Mortimer is a successful elderly medical man, well-esteemed, since those who know him gave him this mark of their appreciation.” Then Holmes was complementing Watson saying good, and excellent, and perfectly sound.
Ayo & Brianna – I think being cheesy when I have to be is useful at times. SO I have this to say . . .
Hold up . . .
Wait a minute . .
Let me put some QUOTES in it.
Use quotes from the text to support your answers, or I can not give you credit for your answers. Repost your entire answers with quotes.
Thanks ! ! 🙂
Holmes and Watson value each greatly and have a loyal friendship. One reason for there friendship is simply all the books they made. It seems Holmes values Watson not only as a friend but as inspiration. As Holmes says in chapter one ” It may be that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light. Some people without pocessing genius have a remarkable way of stimulating it. I confess, my dear fellow, I am very much in your debt. ” This clearly says Holmes depends on Watson for inspiration.
Holmes’ and Watson’s friendship is very great. Without Watson the would be no Holmes. They work together in every mystery. Holmes values his opinion greatly. In the book Holmes says that he is a conductor of light. He means that he helps others become smart. Watson is important to Holmes because he helps him figure out problems like the one in the story. Holmes is important to Watson because without him Watson would be alone. Watson is not very smart but watson helped Holmes figure things out. Those two were ment for each other. (NOT in that way! !!!!)
Watson values holmes opinons because he is usually right and has good advice. There friendship is very important because they help each other with there problems and they are the main characters .Watson is important to holmes because he is always right . holmes is important to Watson because he isnt always right but he always finds hints to the answer.
HEY EVERYONE (Yes, I’m shouting, but not in anger, in Joy :)) . . .
Make note of this entry I wrote to Kryssa C. (Period 2) Please read her posts in the Period 2 DIscussion (4th from the top), and then read my post here. Enjoy!!

Kryssa, your answers are brilliant and well thought out. I have two suggestions for you:
(1) Use fewer words.
(2) Include your citations within the text of your answers
Take a look below at what I have done with (part of) your answer. Compare your answer with my version.
Here’s my version:
Watson is important to Holmes because Holmes needs a companion such as Watson, and another point of view for certain things. As Holmes remarked, “I confess, my dear fellow, that I am very much in your debt” (C-1, P-13). Holmes expresses two things through this statement: (1) he needs Watson around for things he doesn’t see himself, and (2) he is thankful for every bit of information Watson gives him.
All I did was simplify your exact idea. I have not changed your answer. I only used fewer words.
Great work, Kryssa!! Keep it up!

After reading Period 5, I have other suggestions:
* Limit the amount of quoted text you use in your answer. Most of the answer should be in your own words – only quoting essential portions of the book/text.
* The name is “Holmes” not “Homes” homes. aight!
Enjoy!!
