I chose Discussion Topic A – Gothic Fiction.
Gothic is a type of fiction which lacks the medieval setting but develops an atmosphere of gloom or terror, represents events which are uncanny, or melodramatically violent, and often it deals with aberrant psychological states.
Elements of a Gothic Fiction are presented in The Hound of the Baskervilles. First, Baskerville Hall doesn’t really express a medieval setting, but it does have an atmosphere of gloom and terror, with the hound killing people and all. Also, events which are uncanny or melodramatically violent happened such as the death of Sir Charles and the notes from a mystery person saying “stay off the moor”. Furthermore, it also deals with aberrant psychological states like when the Barrymores were lying about Selden and the fact that Mr. Barrymore might have been the one that was stalking Sir Henry and Holmes.

I agree with everybody because we are just so smart.
Topic A
The elements of gothic fiction that are present in the book “The Hound of the Baskervilles” are“melodramatic modes of English fiction of the late 18th and the early 19th century”. It also “extends throughout European literature, and the term implies, more largely, a complex and persistent imaginative tradition”. Additionally “the Gothic novel offered English fiction new symbolic and dramatic patterns that survived in later and greater novels”. An example to me of a Gothic novel would be Romeo and Juliet or maybe even Forest Gump.

Topic B
I think both the characters and the author are both discriminating against women. I think that both the author and the characters the author created are discriminating against women because… First of all, there are barely any women in this story let alone mentioned. And what Megan O’Connor said earlier that Mrs. Barrymore and Mrs. Stapleton are barley even recognized in the novel. This is because we are women and we can’t do anything in this world.( That’s what they think…so to all you young ladies out there lets show them who’s BOSS!!!!!)

Topic C
The main conflicts in the novel are trying to find who killed Sir Charles and who is after
Mr. Watson. No. I do not think all of the conflicts are resolved. This may sound really bad, but I don’t know why the conflicts haven’t been resolved…yet!!..??

Topic D
The climax occurred when Sir Charles murderer escaped from prison. The event that clearly led up to it was Mr Barrymore helped the escaped convict because it was Mr. Barrymore’s brother. The resolution was when (I think it was Sherlock Holmes) let Mr. Barrymore’s brother leave the country.

The topic I’ve chosen is topic C. Topic C is basically asking about the main conflicts in the story. Conflicts have two different meanings. There are internal and external conflicts. According to Mrs. Dowling Litereature Terms an internal conflict is one that takes place in a characters mind. In my opinion Holmes is faced with an internal conflict. Holmes always relies on his first instinct whether the case is disorienting. For example in Ch.1 Sherlock Holmes, Holme’s was examining the Penang Lawyer. While doing so he never hesitated or second guessed his observations. To me that seems strange seeing as things don’t always work in Holme’s favor. His internal conflict may not be obvious, but from my former knowledge most people often never get things perfect on their first try. Even though Holmes has a lot of experience he still could’ve pondered the situation more.
I also think Holmes faces an external conflict. To be more specific he experienced a Man vs. Nature. According to Mrs.Downing’s Literature Terms an external conflict is one in which there’s a struggle between a character and an outside force. In my opinion Holme’s is facing nature or fate. In Ch.5 The Three Broken Threads, Holme’s had three leads which all came up short. To me that was a sign that things may not work out in his favor. I’m not saying Holmes should give up, but that he is being faced with many challenges.
For both conflicts neither is resolved. Holme’s internal conflict hasn’t seemed to change mainly because his first instcint has always worked well for him. Also his external conflict hasn’t been resolved because we have’nt read what will occur next. Plus I don’t know whether he faces any more challenges.

Gothic Fiction
When i hear the word “Gothic Novel” it makes me think of a sad, but romantic book. To what i have learned a gothic novel is a kind of “Romantic Fiction”. Since in the description of a Gothic Novel it states that “their principal aim was to evoke chilling terror by exploiting mystery, cruelty, and a variety of horrors”. The Hound Of The Baskervilles clearly enters that category because of its mystery and horror. Horror because of the apparent death in the book and the great description of it. Mystery because of the obscure situation Sherlock Holmes is currently in.
when i looked at her text i saw this(The elements of gothic fiction present in the hound of the baskerville’s are mystery, doom, hereditary curses, and much more) i think that would be a good example.
I picked topic A. when i think of a gothic novel i think of sad story or a story that was written by a gothic person, simply i dont know. According to Mr. Moshe s link gothic novel is basicly a novel with something bad in it like a old building or a ghost. Gothic novels are characterized as a horror story like frankenstine. Also i think that hound of the baskervilles is a gothic novel.
Im going with discussion A.
The Gothic novel is a literary genre, in which the prominent features are mystery, doom, decay, old buildings with ghosts in them, madness, hereditary curses and so on. I think this definitely describes The Hound of the Baskervilles. It says a gothic novel has an old castle in it, which in this case, is Baskerville Hall. It also says it has a mysterious theme to it. In this case, we have the mystery of the large hound running around on the moor. Also, there was the ghost Watson saw when Sir Charles and him went hunting after the criminal. To put in the madness factor, there was that one time where Mr.Stapleton chased Sir Charles with a butterfly net for being with his sister. So in my opinion, The Hound of the Baskervilles is a gothic novel because of the characterisitcs it has.

Stereotyping
Gender stereotypes have to do with being a boy or girl, for example to be a man you should be macho, stand up for yourself, sports, not cry,not kind or nice, mean, strong and sexually agressive. While being “ladylike”in society you should be polite, fragile, shave legs, gentle and nice, well dressed, pretty, loyal ,confused and smarter than guys. I think the characters in the book are sort of stereotyped because sir henry and watson act different toward mrs. and mr.barrymore. Thay tend to be nicer to mrs.barymore. It is the same way with the stapletons. So i think that there was some stereotyping in the hound of the baskervilles.

Just so that it is known already, the term “gothic” (according to Washington State University) basically means a type of iction in which it lacks the medieval setting but has growing atmosphere of gloom or terror, has melodramatically violent events, and deals with aberrant phycological states. In the Hound of the Baskervilles that is exactly what is has. First off, in the novel, it really doesn’t exactly have a medieval setting except for maybe Baskerville Hall which has a mysterious and unforutnate hisory. Second, it has it’s melodramatic violent moment such as when the story of the maiden (family curse) in the tower of baskeville hall and the death of Sir Charles. Lastly, the aberrant phsycological states in this book would probably be when Dr.Watson (narrator) has his fear moments and has his thoughts expressed by way of being narrator. Not to mention ( according to Washington State University), gothic novels generaly include a gloomy castle replete with dungeons, subterranean passages, and sliding panels, and made plentiful use of ghosts, mysterious disappearances, and other sensational and supernatural occurrences. And in the Hound of the Baskervilles that is presisely when is in it.

You are all doing extremely well.
For those I have given comments to, I hope you are taking them with a smile. This is about progress, not perfection.
We(including myself) mustn’t expect to get everything we want all of the time.
Enjoy learning, take what I say as useful suggestions, and move on. Those who’ve lost a point or two should not despair. You too are helping those who post after you. The mistakes you make allow me to point out what you (and others) can correct for the future.

Krystal,
Thanks for that very uplifting and positive comment to Kaitlyn D. I’m sure that made her feel great. Now . . .
Everyone,
Take a look at Kaitlyn’s answer. Then answer this question:
Can you think of any examples from the text that would also be very good? Give us one or two, if you would please.
I agree with Kaitlyn D. She makes very good points on the characteristics of Gothic Fiction that are similar to the novel. She has a lot of examples from the text that are very good as well.
Topic-A
Gothic Fiction
There are many things in, “The Hound Of The Baskervilles”, that anyone could consider this book a Gothic Fiction. Gothic Novels contain features such as, mystery, doom, curses, decay, ghosts, and so on. This was said by the University of Adelaide Library. “The Hound Of The Baskervilles”, has many things like this in common. The novel has mystery due to all the constant figuring out who did what, what specific things happened when, and what caused deaths upon the moor. The novel has doom in some cases. Such as, when Watson and Holmes got the letter saying to stay off the moor or they will come to a terrible fate. Also, about the hound that is vaguely in the moor, out yonder. There are also curses in it. For example, the curse put on the Baskervilles. All of these characteristics make this novel what it is today. It gives the novel twist and turns and things that make it very similar to a Gothic Fiction novel.
I chose topic B. According to Mem Fox, “Everything we read·constructs us, makes us who we are, by presenting our image of ourselves as girls and women, as boys and men.” To me, this quote says a whole bunch of different things that could be interpreted in many diffrent ways. For example, that could be saying that men and women in todays society are different because of how they present themselves and how others see them.
The characters in The Hound of Baskervilles, are in a way, sterotyped. Such as Mr. Barrymore. The way he shows himself, can lead people that are reading the book to many different conclusions. Like when he was waiting by the window, people may have thought of him as a weirdo, which in fact, is a stereotype! “Girls are represented as sweet, naive, conforming, and dependent, while boys are typically described as strong, adventurous, independent, and capable” (said Ernst). In the Hound of Baskervilles, the way they treat Mrs. Barrymore and Miss Stapleton isn’t equal to the way they treat Mr. Stapleton or Mr. Barrymore. Simply because they are of the male species. When Mr. and Mrs. Barrymore were by the window waiting for Seldon, Dr. Watson was more harsh to Mr. Barrymore, because he is a guy. I don’t recall him yelling at Mrs. Barrymore, and I think he didn’t because she is a woman.

I chose topic A-Gothic Fiction.
According to John Loofbourow, a gothic novel is a melodramatic mode of English fiction of the late 18th and early 19th century. The definitive quality of Gothic is its emphasis on the enigmatic and the sinister-mystery, vice, darkness, and death (Loofbourow). Other features include doom, decay, old buildings with ghosts in them, madness, and hereditary curses. (“The Gothic Novel”, n.p.)
There are many elements of a gothic novel in The Hound of the Baskervilles. For example, Holmes is trying to solve the Baskerville mystery, which covers the mystery element. The mystery has run is the Baskerville family for several generations, which shows the hereditary curse. Death is also incorporated in the story, because Sir Charles had died in the beginning of the story.

For the discussion, I chose topic A.
Many of the occurences in The Hound of the Baskervilles would have helped the book to be considered to be “gothic literature”. According to the University of Adelaide Liberary, a gothic novel contains a wide variety of things like “mystery, doom, decay, old buildings with ghosts in them, madness, hereditary curses and so on”. Mystery because of the case of Sir Charles’s death, doom because of the death itself, and hereditary curses because of the actual Baskerville curse. Many of the events that happen in the book could be considered gothic. So, I believe that people who categorize the book as a gothic novel are correct to have done so.

The Hound of the Baskervilles is a Gothic Novel because it is full of mystery and a lot more. A Gothic novel has features that are mystery, doom, decay, madness, and curses. In the Hound of the Baskervilles, Dr. Watson and Holmes are working on a case (mystery). They are searching for clues and on the way they find escaped prisoners hiding in the moor (madness). People are dying, like Sir Henery Baskerville (doom). There may not be all the elements of a Gothic Novel in The Hound of the Baskerville, but there are many. The Hound of the Baskervilles could be categorized as a gothic novel.

I chose topic A. According to The University of Adelaide, “The first Gothic novel is generally agreed to be The Castle of Otranto (1764) by Horace Walpole. ”
Gothic novels generally include mystery, doom, decay, old buildings with ghosts in them, madness, hereditary curses and so on. The Hound of the Baskervilles include mystery, doom, and hereditary curses. Mystery is a key element in this book because throughout the entire book, Sherlock Holmes and Dr.Watson are trying to help solve the Baskerville’s case. Doom is also a major element in the story. For example, the death of Sir Charles Baskerville at Baskerville Hall. Some also consider the hound that attacks the Baskerville family on the moor as a hereditary curse.

A gothic novel is a genre of fiction characterized by mystery and supernatural horror, often set in a dark castle or other medieval setting, and has a mysterious curse or prophecy.
The way a Gothic novel relates to The Hound Of The Baskervilles is that the book deals with mystery, blood, deaths, and a big castle. From this single sentence you can tell that this is a gothic novel: Nor can it be denied that many of the family have been unhappy in their deaths, which have been sudden, bloody, and mysterious. (chapter 2)
-There in that sentence it basically have most of the qualities of a gothic novel.
