Discussion Topic A – Gothic Fiction
The gothic novel was a type of fiction that became popular in England during the late 1700’s and early 1800’s (World Book Online) . . . a melodramatic mode of English fiction of the late 18th and the early 19th century (Grolier Online). The Hound of the Baskervilles was published in 1902 (not within the accepted range of dates noted above), however it could qualify as a Gothic Novel.

Discussion Question #3 Topic B- Stereotyping
The characters in The Hound of The Baskervilles are examples of stereotypes. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was raised in Scotland, with Irish Roman Catholics as parents, and went to a Jesuit school so he has been most likely raised in the manner of being stereotypical. What leaves me to believe this is because he has written this book in such that manner. For instance, Dr. Watson is a smoker and takes charge of his situations which is a stereotype as said in the Teen’s Ideas on Gender Stereotypes stats that being in charge is one way how to “Act Like a Man” in our society. Another reason Dr. Watson shows another stereotypical behavior is that he is attracted to Ms. Lora Lyons and Mrs. Stapleton. Holmes is another one showing some stereotypical behavior in being head of a business or being in charge which is again another way to “Act Like a Man” in our society (Teen’s Ideas on Gender Stereotypes). It isn’t just the main characters or the boys for that madder it is the ladies as well like Mrs. Barrymore and Lora Lyons. Mrs. Barrymore I can pin point because in Chapter 9 she said “Yes, sir, my name was Seldon, and he is my younger brother. We humored him too much when he was a lad and gave him his own way in everything until he came to think that the world was made for his pleasure, and that he could do what he liked in it.… The woman’s words came with an intense earnestness which carried conviction with them.” showing her emotions making her emotional as most of my examples are this is from the Teen’s Ideas on Gender Stereotypes article under what it means to be “ladylike” in our society. Lora Lyons I got that she needed help and received it from a man which means having to be saved by a man, again out of the Teen’s Ideas on Gender Stereotypes article under what it means to be “ladylike” in our society. There are more stereotypes in the story this was just a view of some that are more obvious than the rest I’ve read on Stapleton and Mr. Frankland.
Jennifer,

Topic A- Gothic Fiction
According to M.H. Abrams, a Gothic Novel is a romance novel flourished through the early nineteenth century. He also stated that gothic novels are often set in the medieval period, a gloomy castle, subterrranean passages, or sliding panels. They are made with a lot of ghosts, mysterious disappearances, and supernatural occurrences. I believe that The Hound of the Baskervilles is a gothic novel because most of the book was set in a gloomy castle, its supernatural occurrence was the hound, there was a bit of romance in it, and it had one mysterious disappearance.
In the novel, there was the hound which wasn’t like a normal hound. A normal hound doesn’t kill people and is much smaller than the hound in the book. The relationship between Miss Stapleton and Sir Henry was the romance in the
novel. Unfortunately, instead of Sir Henry she married Mr. Stapleton. The mysterious disappearance in the book is the death of Sir Charles. I agree with Jonathan L., when he says that this is mysterious because Sir Charles was killed by the hound. The Baskerville family is cursed by this monsterous hound.
Discussion Question A
There are many different elements of gothic fiction that are present in the Hound Of The Baskerville because according to The University of Adelaide Libary http://etext.library.adelaide.edu.au/themes/gothic.html,the Gothic novel is a literary genre, in which the prominent features are mystery, doom, decay, old buildings with ghosts in them, madness, hereditary curses and so on.
The reason of the novel,The Hound of The Baskerville was to tell the story of how a dective,Mr. Sherlock Holmes, and his assitant, Dr.Watson, figure out the mystery of a ghostly hound and protect the person it may be after. The story takes place in London and is mostly set in a castle or on the moor around the castle. Since Gothic Fiction is any literary genre with mystery, doom, decay, old buildings with ghosts in them, madness, hereditary curses in it then this story is obviously a Gotic ficion even though it was written past the dates.
The castle and the hound are elements that make it a Gothic fiction. The castle because it is an old buliding with doom and decay and the hound is a huge ghosly creature that is much bigger than any normal hound. There is also a hereditary curse because the hound is apart of the family curse.
Discussion Q’ C’-
According to Ms. Engram’s English Classroom there are two types of conflicts; internal and external. But there are four kinds-ManvMan, Man v Circumstances, Man v Society, and Man v Himself. The definition provided was” It is the opposition of forces which ties one incident to another and makes the plot move. Conflict is not merely limited to open arguments, rather it is any form of opposition that faces the main character.” On the book I found all of the kinds of conflicts used by Mr Doyle.
-1.ManvMan….
The conflict I found between two characters in the story is the one between Henry and Stapleton fighting for Ms Stapleton, This conflict is resolved because Stapleton came to apologyze for his reactions.
-2.Man v Circumstances….
This conflict is found with Sir Henry because’ he’ being a Baskerville is destined to be killed by some mysterious creature at night if he goes alone to the moor. The conflict is not resolved because Henry is killed when least expected.
-3.Man v Society…
This conflict is mentioned brieftly with Selton(the escaped convict)who is being chased by everybody to kill him or turn him in.It is resolved because Barrymore said that they were sending him to South America.
-4.Man v Himself ………..
This conflict is mostly shown in Watson.I believe Watson is fighting with himself because he was sent to protect and observe Henry, but, unfortunately,Henry got killed by the ‘hound’ and now he feels guilty for not being with him at the right time. The conflict is not resolved because this was something not even Holmes could have stopped and now is up to him to get over it and help Holmes solve the mystery.
Disscussion Topic A- Gothic Fiction
I chose Gothic Fiction because the book does have to deal with a lot of legends, and past events that now have led to unexplained events. For example; the legend of the Hound of the Baskerville is the whole story itself. And the mere fact that it has supernatural legends, unexplained deaths and tragedies mixed in with it while at the same time the book connects all of the mystery to other things that it has a lot of such as climaxes and new twist, or plots.
Discussion Question A
Gothic fiction can be found in most of “Hound of the baskervilles” because the book contains some of the key elements of gothic fiction such as mystery, supernatural phenomena, ancient legends/buildings Ect… some examples of the horror would be the mysterious death of sir charles and the cause of it. the baskerville family had the belief that the death was some what related to the curse that had been set upon them describing a “great black beast” larger than any mortal eye has seen before,it was also shaped as a hound and reffered to as “the hound of the baskerville curse.” others like Sherlock Holmes insisted that the death was caused of “mental issues and heart failure.”
Okay.
I will definitely remember the quotes next time.
I picked number A.
The University of Adelaide Library’s website said that ” The Gothic novel is a literary genre, in which the prominent features are mystery, doom, decay, old buildings with ghosts in them, madness, hereditary curses and so on. In England, the Gothic novel as a genre had largely played itself out by 1840. It left a lasting legacy, however, in works such as Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and the works of Edgar Allan Poe.
The Washington State University’s website said that ” The Gothic novel, or “Gothic romance” . . . flourished through the early nineteenth century. Authors of such novels set their stories in the medieval period, often in a gloomy castle replete with dungeons, subterranean passages, and sliding panels, and made plentiful use of ghosts, mysterious disappearances, and other sensational and supernatural occurrences; their principal aim was to evoke chilling terror by exploiting mystery, cruelty, and a variety of horrors. The term “gothic” has also been extended to denote a type of fiction which lacks the medieval setting but develops a brooding atmosphere of gloom or terror, represents events which are uncanny, or macabre, or melodramatically violent, and often deals with aberrant psychological states.”
Th Hound of the Baskervilles obviously fits into this genre. The hound is plenty macabre and terrifying. It ripped Hugo’s throat out and made his friends go loopy. The book itself is a mystery. It is very supernatural because no one has heard of a gigantic hound that eats people.
Discussion Question A
There are many different elements of gothic fiction that are present in the Hound Of the Baskervilles because the definition from Washington State’s Unviersity website states that a gothic novel is a “literary genre, in which the prominent features are mystery, doom, decay, old buildings with ghosts in them, madness, hereditary curses and so on”.
The Hound of the Baskervilles has most of these and more. The big mystery is about the death of Sir Charles Baskerville and what had caused it. The doom, decay, madness, and hereditary curse, as it was called, was the manuscript that Dr. Mortimer said Sir Charles took seriously and that ” his mind was prepared for just such an end as did eventually overtake him”. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson heard it and it states that there was a “great black beast, shaped like a hound, yet larger than any hound that ever mortal eye has rested upon” and that it ripped out the throat of Hugo Baskerville. All the Baskerville sons were told in the manuscript that “by way of caution to forbear from crossing the moor in those dark hours when the powers of evil are exalted”.
Discussion Topic B
I think Stereotype has many meanings when come to mind. Stereotype can mean generalization, usually exaggerated or oversimplified and often offensive, that is used to describe or distinguish a groupMany people do it all the time and don’t even know they do it. In the article Teen’s Ideas on Gender Stereotypesit asks the question”What does it mean to act like a man?”They have many answers for the question. The other question reads”What does it mean to be ladylike?’ In the Hound of the Baskervilles I think there are both stereotypes and nonstereotypes . For example, they use stereotypes on Sir Sherlock Holmes.

Grolier Online says The definitive quality of Gothic is its emphasis on the enigmatic and the sinister—mystery, vice, darkness, death… Imprisonment and escape, the fair victim, and the dark villain initiated a symbolism of light and darkness; castle and tunnel suggested an iconography of the subconscious; the fascination with “darkness” led to an exploration of evil as a mode of insights.

acorrding to http://etext.library.adelaide.edu.au/themes/gothic.html a gothic novel is a novel that contains things like mysterys doom. The hound of the baskervilles is a gothic novel because it’s a sherlock holmes novel shelock is a dective which means it’s a mystery novel. Also there is doom in the novel because the hound is out to get the bakerviles. As we see the hounds of the baskervilles is a gothic novel.

Discussion Topic C
Obviously, a conflict is a problem between a person and mostly anything else. There are a few types of conflicts such as
To come into collosion or disagreement; be contradictory or clash.
Discord of action, feeling or effect.
A mental struggle arising from opposing demands or impulses. (From fictionfactor.com)
The few struggles of The Hound of the Baskervilles are Mr. Holmes and Watson with the case of The Hound. Disagreeing with the case is part of a conflict. This hasnt been resolved since they haven’t figured the case out.
Actually another conflict which most people wouldnt think of is of Hugo’s friends who had a mental struggle with the things they saw the night which Hugo died. It hasnt really been resolved since they are still crazy.
Hugo had a conflict with the Hound which killed him which is a collosion with the Hound. This has been resolved (i guess) since it is over
Sir Henry Baskerville’s death of the Hound which Holmes and Watson was a conflict since Holmes and Watson fought about what could have happened and what did really happened. This hasnt been resolved because they still arent sure what really happened.
Discussion Question A
The University of Adelaide states that a Gothic novel is a literary genre, in which the prominent features are mystery, doom, decay, old buildings with ghosts in them, madness, hereditary curses and so on.
I believe that in The Hound of the Baskervilles, there are many elements to prove it is a Gothic novel. The University of Adelaide states that a Gothic novel can contain hereditary curses. We learned earlier in chapter 2 that the whole book was going to be about the CURSE of the Baskerville family. Also, I think that the whole scene in chapter 2 with the “Black Beast” was madness and a bit of an exaggeration. Holmes could of left it as a “Hound” but he had to make it that more suspenseful and scary.
Discussion A
The gothic novel is a literary genre, in which the prominent features are mystery, doom, decay, old buildings with ghosts in them, madness, hereditary curses etc. ( http://etext.library. adelaide.edu.au/themes/gothic.html ).
The Hound of the Baskervilles is considered a gothic novel because in the definition of a gothic novel, it says that a gothic novel must contain hereditary curses. In this sentence from the book it says “Yes it is a statement of a certain legend which runs in the Baskerville family.” (ch.2) This means that there is a curse in the Baskerville family. It also means that this book is a gothic novel. Another statement in chapter 2 says “but it was that, standingover Hugo, and plucking at his throat, there stood a foul thing , a great, black beast, shaped like a hound, yet larger than any hound that ever mortal eye has rested upon…” This is another example that this novel is a gothic novel because gothic novels have mysterious characteristics in it. This “Black beast” is also proof that the Hound of the Baskervilles is a gothic novel.
Discussion Topic D
The climax occurs in chapter 14. Events that led up to it were when Sir Henry Baskerville long walks home across the moor result in him to be attack by the hound. In the chapter, “Far away on the path we saw Sir Henry looking back, his face white in the moonlight, his hands raised in horror, glaring helplessly at the frightful thing which was hunting him down.” “I was in time to see the beast spring upon its victim, hurl him to the ground, and worry at his throat. And Hindered by the thick fog and sheer fright, Holmes and Watson shoot the beast. In the chapter, “But the next instant Holmes had emptied five barrels of his revolver into the creature’s flank. With a last howl of agony and a vicious snap in the air, it rolled upon its back, four feet pawing furiously, and then fell limp upon its side. I stooped, panting, and pressed my pistol to the dreadful, shimmering head, but it was useless to press the trigger. The giant hound was dead.”
The resolution of the novel is when; Mrs. Stapleton leads them through the mire, eager to capture her abusive husband. The Stapleton’s had placed sticks in the mire to mark the spots where it was safe to walk, and the detectives follow the path until they come upon an object, partially submerged. It turns out to be Sir Henry’s black boot, which Stapleton used to set his hound on Henry’s trail and then threw to the ground as he made his escape. The detectives also find the phosphorous used to make the beast glow scary enough to frighten Sir Charles to death. “On the morning after the death of the hound the fog had lifted and we were guided by Mrs. Stapleton to the point where they had found a pathway through the bog. It helped us to realize the horror of this woman’s life when we saw the eagerness and joy with which she laid us on her husband’s track.” Quote “He may find his way in, but never out,” she cried. “How can he see the guiding wands tonight? We planted them together, he and I, to mark the pathway through the mire.” “He held an old black boot in the air.
“Meyers, Toronto,” was printed on the leather inside.
“It is worth a mud bath,” said he. “It is our friend Sir Henry’s
Missing boot.”
“Thrown there by Stapleton in his flight.”
The discussion question that I have chosen is topic B sterotyping. When I looked at teen’s ideas on gender stereotypes I noticed different answers for different questions. For the question ” Act Like a Man” it said tough, muscles, and the results varied. For the question ” ladylike” the answers were fragile, kind, and so on. Stereotypes is the act of holding or promoting generalized and oversimplified beliefs about members of a group(worldbook) . They can be positive or negative responses because the answers vary according to that person. These beliefs, which commonly involve personality traits, physical apperance, and types of behaviors are called stereotypes (worldbook). The characters in the Hound of the Baskervilles are stereotypes. The main charcter I think Sir Arthur Conan Doyle used was Mr. Sherlock Holmes. Mr. Sherlock Holmes is the main person in the book besides Watson. When it comes to making inferences and predictions about the cases everyone asks Mr. Holmes and I think thats what the author was trying to put out there. In my opinion he thinks he’s better then everyone else and thats when it falls into the category of stereotyping.

Elements of a gothic novel in th hound of the baskerville are that one it takes place in a castle or baskerville hall. It has an atomshpere of a mystery and suspence as it is its genre. It has an ancient prophecy as doctor mortmer readfrom the scripter. It has supernatural or otherwise inexplicable events as the demon hound. It has high, even overwrought emotion everybody is in dispare. Lasty it has a women in distress two time with Hugo and Larra Lyons
I chose to do the Gothic Fiction, because in this book there are many Gothic elements. It provides some classic elements of the Gothic genre such as medieval settings, supernatural appearances and mysterious happenings but, it also gives offers a number of themes, ideas and issues; ranging from bottom line social stereotypes. As in the Hound Of The Baskervilles they talk about castles from the medieval times, an mysterious curse, any many more supernatural things a curring from time to time. Now the think that really make this story a little more creepier is with the strange sightings that they have seen at the moor from night and day. Also the weird noises that have heard since Watson and Sir Henry got there, especially when they heard they both heard “THE HOUND CRY OF THE BASKERVILLES”. So Im certain more strange and mysterious happenings are going to accord through out the book.
According to the Washington State University website, “The Gothic novel, or “Gothic romance” . . . flourished through the early nineteenth century. In “The Hound of the Baskerville” there is a bunch of elements that connect it to being a Gothic Novel. For example, the definition of a Gothic Novel is mystery, doom, decay, hereditary curses, and supernatural occurences.
The whole book is about the Baskervilles curse and the book is full of mysteries. Like when Watson saw the other man in the moor. He didn’t know who he was so he investigated. He later found out that it was Holmes all along. Some supernatural occurences also appear in the book. For example, the sitings of the hound is supernatural to me because the hound is bigger than a regular hound. Also, It is described as a massively large, devilish, black beast that kills anyone that comes into its way.
There is also romance in the book. Sir Henry falls in love with Miss Stapleton, but, we later find out that she is not Mr. stapletons sister, but his wife.
Oh, thank you Mr.Moshe.
Should I make the change? Or is it fine?
Naghma,
Here is how you typed it in your post (see below):

Here is how you could have typed it (see below):

Make a note of the difference.
Discussion A
In my opinion, gothic fiction is a great type of literature to read. Events of a gothic fiction novel usually take place in dark , gloomy and mysterious castles, stone passageways, towers etc and is designed according to gothic architecture., hence this contributes to the name GOTHIC. A good gothic novel is fictional and basically composed of horror and romance. It is also composed of Mystery. This information is all obtained from WORLD BOOK ONLINE.
THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES is fictional and it is composed of horror, romance and mystery(that proves that it is a gothic novel). For example , Sir arthur Conan Doyle conveys horror through the hound by making the characters(Dr.watson) blood run cold when they hear the hound or creating a reign of terror among the characters by the mention of the hound’s name. There is also a lot of love going on in the story like sir henry coming to the estate and falling in love with Miss Stapleton. The third element is the air of mystery and that is shown through the mysterious man with the beard following the characters(Dr. Watson and Sherlock Homes) around and the reason for the hound killing Sir Charles and the others.

A Gothic Novel is a literary genre, in which the prominent features are mystery, doom, decay, old buildings with ghosts in them, madness, hereditary curses and so on, I got that information from “The University of Adelaide Library’s website.”
In the Hound of the Baskervilles, there are many elements that prove it is a Gothic novel. For example, the definition states, a Gothic novel may contain hereditary curses. And as everyone who has read The Hound of the Baskerville knows, there is a “curse”, that runs in the Baskerville family. Another example, the definition states that during a Gothic novel, the reader will find, madness, and mystery. So far in almost every chapter of The Hound of the Baskerville, contains madness, and mystery. For example, “… but it was that, standing over Hugo, and plucking at his throat, there stood a foul thing, a great black beast, shaped like a hound yet larger than any hound that ever mortal eye has rested upon”, which was found in chapter 2. That statement proves, the novel has mysteries and madness.
A gothic fiction is a novel, or romance, that is held in the nineteenth century. It contained gloomy castles, dungeons, secret passages, sliding panels, ghosts, and myserious disappearences.( By M.H. Abrams, http://www.wsu.edu/~campbelld/amlit/novel.htm)
The Hound of the Baskervilles is a gothic fiction because the setting is in a gloomy castle. It has a supernatural occurences which is the hound.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was trying to instill fear and terror of his readers, while he wrote this novel. When Hugo Bskerville died by the hound, this made it seem mysterious by the fact a ghost-like large dog, ripped out his throat.( Chapter 2)
Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick said that gothic fiction is a type of fiction which lacks medieval setting but has an atmosphere of gloom, terror, and disappearences.(www.wsu.edu/~campbelld/amlit.htm)
The Hound of the Baskervilles was not in a medieval setting but was set around the 19th and 20th century. By both standards of gothic fiction this novel measures up. I agree with Justin V. because there was a small romance between Miss. Stapleton and Sir Henry Baskerville. Which is another component for a gothic fiction.

Examples of gothic fiction are like romantic novels, earlier and some modern horror novels, and novels about the supernatural and psychic phenomena. An example of psychic phenomena in The Hound of the Baskervilles is the hound. It is described as a massively large, devilish, black beast that kills anyone that comes into contact of it. This sounds to me like a ghost or maybe just a figment of the characters in the story’s crazy imaginations. Secondly, there is Some horror in the novel. For example, in the beginning of the book when Hugo Baskerville and his two sidekicks got smashed and kidnapped a girl. She somehow got out of he entrapment and the 3 of them went out to find her. They found her trying to escape the Baskerville estate. She eventually died of fright, Hugo got his throat ripped out by the hound, and Hugo’s two friends went crazy and spent the rest of their lives in an asylum from witnessing Hugo’s death. Lastly, there’s also romance in the novel. For example, I belive it was Watson that was talking about how Mr. Stapleton was so infatuated, so madly in love with I think it was Laura Lyons. If I am incorrect with any of my information, please correct me.
