The Book Without Words – Period 5 Discussion Area
PERIOD 5 Discussion Area – In this area you are to discuss all of the Discussion Questions posted.
- Discussion Question #1 is CLOSED.
- Discussion Question #2 is OPEN.
Consider what the discussion question is. Be sure to address the question.
STEP 1 – UNDERSTAND THE QUESTION.
STEP 2 – ADDRESS THE QUESTION (50%). (Question in the answer, your answer, details to support your answer)
- Give us your entire thought process.
- Give us details from the text to prove you know what you’re talking about. Otherwise, who knows what you’re basing your thoughts on?
- Your details do not have to be direct word-for-word quotes (mainly because you do not have the books at home).
- STILL, give us a clear idea of what thing(s)from the book you are basing your answer on. You can paraphrase, in other words.
- Please address the topic of your choice in as much detail as possible. The more detail you give us, the better we will understand your thought process, AND the better we will be able to argue/discuss with you.
- You see, if you give us your entire thought, we can see if there is anything wrong with it – any faulty logic going on there. We are in this discussion to sharpen our wits and gain the ability to think better than we ever have.
STEP 3 – Post a response to classmates (50%).
- Option #1 – If you agree with someone’s answer . . .
. . . Then explain what you agree with – be specific. And extend or expand on the thought you are agreeing with by backing your comment up with details from the text, from your own life, whatever is appropriate. You could agree with someone and support your agreement with other more, unused descriptive details from the book, other books, or your own life. Get it?- Option #2 – If you disagree with someone’s answer . . . . . . Then justify your disagreement by taking a stance backed up by your own details from the text.

I would have to agree with michael because he says “that more someone lies, cheats, and steals this will later cause their self destruction.”In the story as thorston spent his whole life not trying to get an injure or illnesses and let his own blood leave his body he had to lie to everyone. He even went to lenghts to steal someone elses life.Even though he spent his whole life trying to avoid death in the end death had finally caught up to him.Just as michael said “this will later cause their own self destruction.”
Quote B
I choose quote B because Damian said “the one more sins the heavier one gets.”To me this means as we go through life the things that we do can affect our life. The more we lie in our lives this can in return hurt the ones that we care about. The minute that this happens the people around us don’t even seem to recognize us anymore. We don’t even seem to notice ourselves anymore. One example of this is in the movie the lord of the rings. In the movie when one of the characters found a ring, this ring seemed to have some kind of control over the beholder. The longer the person held the ring the more he seemed to change. This is the same thong that the lies that we tell can do to us.
I chose quote A
Sybil says: “It is not my death I fear . . . but my life,” I think she means that she’s afraid of what can happen to her. When your alive, so many different things can happen to anyone but when your dead nothing happens and your not really in any danger.
I agree with Jonathan because when you are alive there are many things that can happen.
I chose Quote C : Alfric said that his father used to enjoy telling his children, “The shorter the sermon, the longer the truth,” in Chapter 3 section 11.
What I think Alfric meant by this was that a few persons do a lot of good things during their lifetime, and a LOT of people do alot od bad deeds so during a person’s funeral you are suppose to say good things about the deceased person and if the persaon was bad then you would have to start lying to make the sermon seem substantial enough for the person because people might have thought differently of them.
I picked Quote A.
When Sybil says “It is not my death I fear . . . but my life,” she means that she is afraid of her life because she has to go through horrible things like being Thorston’s servant, doing chores for him, and getting mistreated. If she were dead, she wouldn’t have to worry about anything bad happening to her. I can relate to her because I am worried about the problems I might have to face in my future.
I agree with Jonathan because when you are alive there is so much to fear and when you are dead you don’t have to worry about anything in the world.
Quote C : Alfric said that his father used to enjoy telling his children, “The shorter the sermon, the longer the truth,” in Chapter 3 section 11.
I feel that this quote is very true, not just in sermons and eulogies, but in all aspects of life. The more a person talks, the more they tend to exagerate. In this case, if more words had been said, then the children might have began to lie, saying Thorsten had been a nice, generous person. In short, they might have fabricated the true character of Thorsten.
I agree with Breanna because, I am nervous about what kind of promblems have will have to deal with in my life and how my future will turn out to be. Though, if I’m dead then there is nothing to be nevous about anymore.
I picked Quote
When Sybil says “It is not my death I fear…but my life” she means that she is not scared to die. Since she has been Thorstons servant for a long period of time doing his chores just upsets her. For example, Sybil has to make his meals, get his supplies, and wash his clothes. But she cares about her life because she would not like to give it up to a person like Thorston. All he has done is mistreated Sybil ever since she has been his servant.
I agree whith dana when she said “he means that when you do anything bad and hide it the lie will just build up inside of you and it becomes a havy load on your shoulders.” Because her deffinition of qoute b is along the lines of what I said.
I’ve choosen qoute b “the more one sins the heavier one get”said Damian. when Damian says this I feel that he means. “The more one cheats;steals; and lie the more it builds up and pile upon thier shoulders leading up to thier own self destruction.”
I agree with stephanie whe she said that the guilt when you lie it is like extra laod added on.
I picked qoute B.
“the more one sins the heavier one gets” says Damaian.
When Damaian says this i think he means that when you do anything bad and hide it the lie will just build up inside of you and it becomes a havy load on your shoulders.
Question A- Setting
Avi delivers a crystal clear look at the world around the characters. He is so specific in detail about thier surroundings. For example, when Sybil went to the Apothecary’s Shop.Avi explained to us that it was a small crowded room walled with shelves that bore bottles and jars containing roots, like ginger;herbs like mandragora;spices, like cloves ;powdered minerals, like lead;ointments like spikenard. When he did this it made me think Im in the shop or in my room.Mostly because you can picture whats in the shop and I can see what it looks like.
I will be choosing quote A
when sybil says that “It is not my death I fear . . . but my life,”
i agree with that because of the fact that in life it will be hard to deal with certin things and sybil has a lot of stuff to deal with because of the death of Thurston. dying to her would be easier because after you die you don’t have to deal with the stuff hat you if you alive.
* Quote B “the more one sins the heavier one gets,” says Damian figuratively in Chapter 3 Section 11.
I think that this means that the more a person sins the more harder it is to deal with. I would relate the sins to tons of weights and every time that person sins the more heavier or perhaps painful it is for them to deal with.
I chose quote B “The more sins the heavier one qets” .
I dont actually think they mean that you will actually qet heavier in a literal sense . I think that the more you sin or lie , the more quilt you carry around with you and that is what is weiqhinq you down .
I agree with Benjamin because he says that the way that Thorston treated her was in a horrible way and what he makes her do is worst than death itself. He made someone at her age do so much for him that she just couldn’t stand it.
When Sybil says “It’s not death i fear…but my life,” she means that death is nothing compared to what she had to do when she was a slave for Master Thorston. All the errands she had to do for him, wash his clothes, get him what he desires, i mean those things to her were worse than what death could do to her. She feared for her life with Thorston more than dieing.
I must agree with Johnathan because he says that if you are dead than you wont be destroyed by the thought of having to be mistreated or manipulated. When she is alive she goes through disasters and terrible treatment from all she comes in contact with.
I chose quote A “It is not my death I fear . . . but my life,” says Sybil.
Sybil’s life it rough. she has to deal with being Master Thorston’s slave. she must do whatever he tells her to do. if she were dead, she would not have to do any of that.
I Choose Quote A
When Sybil said “It is not my death I fear . . . but my life,”
I agreed with her because if you are dead you dont really have anything to worry about like taxes, someone breaking in your house, or your mother-in-law. When you are alive you have to worry about almost anything like are you gonna get robbed or is your mother-in-law going to come to your home today. so sybil makes a great point
THE quote that I choose was quote a. Sybil is trying to say that since she has been locked up in the castle she really would not care if she died. All her life has been nothing but doing chores. But her life she cares about because she would not like to give it up to someone like Thorston. Just the thought of thorston taking her life after the way he treated her probably gets her fired up.
