Nonfiction Unit Resources
The culminating projects for the NONFICTION Unit of Study-Memoirs has you completing 3 PROJECTS from below. After you have worked closely with selections in class as well as on your own, you will begin work on your projects.
You must ENSURE that over all three PROJECTS, you hit on all of the SIX FACETS OF UNDERSTANDING and show mastery of the topics listed below:
- Core Genre(s): Memoirs/Autobiography/Biography
- Text Structure: Chronological Order, Cause & Effect
- Cognitive/Comprehension Skill: Cause & Effect
- Literary & Poetic Techniques: Setting/Mood-Time, Place, CULTURE

Theme-Centered Book Cover This project MUST touch on all 6 Facets of Understanding. Satisfy the requirements of the rubric in terms of Front Cover, Back Cover, 2 Inside Flaps, and the Spine. Character Assessment This project MUST touch on Self-Knowledge, Empathy and Perspective. Write a six word Memoir that can sum up your philosophy of life up to this point. EXTRA CREDIT SCENE PERFORMANCE: Create a VIDEO to correlate with your Memoir, Upload it to Youtube.com, and post a link to it. You could work with others to make the video. SAMPLES TOOLS |
Comic Strip This project MUST touch on all 6 Facets of Understanding. Create a comic strip based on one or more of the selections. The comic strip must have 9-10 frames. See SAMPLES below. TOOLS |
Editorial Cartoon This project MUST touch on Perspective, Empathy, and Self-Knowledge. Create an editorial or political cartoon inspired by or in reaction to some issue brought forth in/by one or more of the selections. I’m calling them Editorial Cartoons, but most sites and teachers call them Political Cartoons. My definition, which is based on the one found at Ask.com, is that “the purpose of [editorial or] political cartoons is complex. . . They convey complex [social and or] political issues in simple and humorous ways. This is done to make a point about these issues and their flaws.” See SAMPLES below. TOOLS |
Learning Style CHOICE This project MUST touch on Perspective. Using your personal strengths uncovered by your teacher’s Learning Style survey, find and complete a project of your own choosing. A RUBRIC must be provided with final project. Project MUST relate to 1 of the selections above. See SAMPLES below. TOOLS |
Create-A-Test This project MUST touch on Explanation, Interpretation, Application, and Perspective. Create your own test based on at least three of the selections. This test has to be multiple choice, complete with 10 questions. You must provide an answer key that explains why the correct answers are RIGHT (detail from text cited) and why the incorrect answers are WRONG. See SAMPLES below. Movie Poster This project MUST touch on Explanation, Interpretation, and Application Create a Movie Poster for a selection that includes, Title, 2 Tag Lines, Production and Direction credits, Casting credits, rating, and imagery that is inl ine witht he Tones/Moods/Characters/Settings of the selection. AND write a brief Trailer Script that would be spoken during a trailer/preview of the film in theaters or on DVDs. Satisfy the requirements of the RUBRIC found at this site. EXTRA CREDIT Video Credit – Create the trailer that goes with your poster and follows the Scripts. USE Movie Rubric 1 for Grading or create your own RIGOROUS rubric. See SAMPLES below. TOOLS

Interview Individual This project MUST touch on Perspective, Empathy, and Self-Knowledge Write 10 question interview (include interviewer and interviewee) that uncovers how the individual physically looks/dresses, thinks and exhibits a specific TONE based around the issue(s) presented in the selection. Scene Performance This project MUST touch on all 6 Facets of Understanding. Working with a small group of classmates, create a performance of the MOST IMPORTANT scene from one of the selections. Choose background music that captures the mood of your interpretation of the selection. See SAMPLES below. TOOLS |

Your memoir should be only six words. You should write only one memoir that needs to answer a very important core question:
– What is your philosophy of life? OR
– What is the statement that best sums up your personal daily golden rule?
Mr.Moshe, can you explain to me how to do the book cover because the project sheet doesn’t help me with having to know how to do this? You also can explain thing very well when people need help. Right now, I’m one of those people. Thank you :).
