Week Two – Question #2
Sophie and Creighton are given a great deal of responsibility in Ben Franklin’s print shop as teenagers. In colonial America many teenagers around the age of 14 or 15 are doing work and taking responsibility for things today often associated with adults.
Do you think that in American society today we wait too long to treat teenagers as adults? What would be some pros and cons of allowing teenagers in America to have the full rights and responsibilities of adults at the age of 15?
I do not think 15 is not a good age to be treated like an adult because the way some kids at our school at and they are ages 12-15 ( most of them ), and to me they are very irrsponsible… I mean some skip class, get in fights, and ultimately introuble. If they so this now what will they do in the realworld where there is no parents to tell you right from wrong. So those kinds of kids will possibly get into gangs or make one for them self’s! They could shoot people down, steal, and smoke/inject/sniff many subtances that would make them sick so I say no. But, in those time if you did something wrong you would be SEVERLY punished, and it was very disciplined back then so if it was like that now I would say yes but, sadly it is not. *finished*
i think that today they dont wait to long. In order to be treated as an adult you must show that you are responsible and that if you had to be given all adult responsiblities you would be able to handle them. I know for a fact that if i had to have all of an adults responsibillities I would not be able to handle it. Also teenagers in colonial times didnt have the kind of things that we have now that would tempt us and prove us to be irrisponsible and not capable of being treated as an adult. A down fall to us not being treated as adults at an early age is that we be come more curious and tend to get into more trouble by wanting to try things out.
PERSONALLY I THINK ITZ 50/50 THING I THING TEENAGERS SHOULD BE CONSIDERD A ADULT CAUSE WE OR AT LEAST SOME TEENAGERS ARE MATURE ENOUGH TO DAO ADULT THINGS AND BE PREPARED FOR WHEN THEY ARE OFFICIALY AN ADULT YOU FEEL WHAT IM SAYIN.
I think the age limit is a good one;most teenagers are too irresponsible to handle a dose of reality, they can make huge mistakes.A good thing I guess is that they have more time to gain experience in working before they need to get an actual job to fund themselves.Honestly sometimes I don’t know why you would want to let teenagers work before the age limit, sure people want to raise money for college or whatever, but when you’re an adult and you get an actual job, everyday is work work work and you should enjoy yourself when you’re a teenager.
No i dont think that we wait to long to treat teenagers as adults because i believe there is a time for everything. In my opinion kids and teenagers need to enjoy there child hood years as much as possible. I also think this because teenagers at the age of 15 wouldnt be able to handle paying bills, owning a house and paying credit cards ect. Kids at the colonial america times were raised as hard working and bold. So i think that the age that america has set to be an adult is better than 15.

Since 15 is an age where you are becoming an adult Parents arent going to continue to lend money. So the responsiblity is on you. The age limit is perfect on what how America is becoming.
i think starting at the age they have in American is a good limit. 15 is the stage where you are maturing and starting High School where you are going to want to need many things. Since 1
I think teenagers should not be consider adults at only age 15. Yes they should grow up and be more mature, but they are not ready to make their own decisions. Teenagers should enjoy their childhood because they won’t get it back, they should be able to be a kid until they are more mature and ready to make improtant decisions in life.
In my opinion, teenagers are not ready to be treated like adults because some of them have the mentality of a five year old and we can’t deal with people like that and I don’t think that we wait too long to treat them like adults. Some teenagers aren’t ready for the responsibility of being adults. For example, yesterday I was at Target and my mom and I were asking for help to find something from these two guys that were about 15 or so and they didn’t even pay attention to us when we first asked them. If we have teenagers like that working all over the place, then we might not get anything done any time soon and everybody will be mad.
The twentieth century is definately very different from all the other centuries. Us, young adults have been exposed to so much violence , music, technology and more. Take technology for example. Most kids they get home and go on the computer. I know so many people that do not have to do chores. This century’s young adults are allowed to drive at 15, but meanwhile they do not know how to do laundry or take out the garbage ? I do not think that is correct. Some kids do not even know what a broom is. They are the type of children that will grow up and feed off of mommy and daddy until the parents get tired of the child wasting thier money. Today’s society does let kids of the hook with a lot of things which will only hurt them in the future. The pros of driving at the age of 15 is that we do not have to depend on our parents , but the cons are that some kids take it out of hand and do some things that are supid. That results in accidents and death.
Well, I know teenagers who act like adults and teenagers who act like toddlers. Learning more responsibiity and learning the value of the dollar is a pro. The fact that work interfers with school, and it might be too much responsibility is a con.
I think that society does not wait too long to treat teenagers as adults, in fact I agree with the way it is now. The reason why Creighton and Sophie were given much responsibility at the printing shop is because back then they were expected to help around and work. The adulsts trusted them and the teenagers’ words were worth more than now. Now it is very difficult to trust teenagers because they often misbeahave. Also the punishment back then wasmore harsh than now. So, they were afraid of not doing their jobs correctly. We in the other hand would not be as responsible as they were and would probably go to work late if not at all. Thus, proving my point when I say that it is effective the way society treats them now and it should not change.
WELL AT THE AGE OF 15, NOT ALL TEENS ARE RESPONSIBLE. oNE OF THE PROS ARE THAT THEY WILL BE LEARNING RESPONSIBILITY BY GETTING A JOB AND MANAGEING MONEY. A CON IS THAT THEY MIGHT NOT USE THEIR MONEY IN THE REIGHT WAY AND END UP SPENDING IT ON STUFF THAT THEY REALLY DON’T NEED.
Some teenagers do deserve the right to have the full rights adults have. A con is that with teenagers helping adults they might get some of the jobs they have to do quicker. Although some do deserve the rights, most teenagers are too irresponsible and wrapped in gossip and having crazy fun to pay attention to the importance of the things that adults have to do, like paying the bills instead of spending the money on going to the movies every night.
Some of the pros and cons of having teenager treated like adults is that even though we may be able to get some of the jobs that many adults have, we also have the responsibility to pay for bills and all of us know what a hassle that can be. If we have the rights of adults we also get to drive cars, however can you imagine a 13 year old driving a car. That might end in destruction, and you may be caught in the middle of it. It would be good to be treated as an adult, but I think i’ll wait.
Some pros for teenagers having the responsibilitys of a adult is,teenagers would be able to drive, teens could get a job and make money, and could by stuff of of tv.Some cons are teens would smoke legally and die more often, teens could marry at a young age,and teens would go to strip clubs and get hiv.
Well I happen to think both ways, but I do think society does take too long to treat us responsible teenagers like adults.
there are many irresponssible teenagers here in America who fight to much and have to many problems, but not every person in this world that is a teen is like that. I do think it should be changed in a way. Like if you’re mature enough. Some teens are to rude and inconsiterate to be treated like adults or to be called adults yet, but for a handful, they think they’re old enough for jobs and work. Let them do what they want.
My perspective is that some pros and cons of allowing teenagers in America to have the full rights and responsibilities of adults at the age of 15 is that it’s a stellar idea. Some teenagers feel that they need to be treated like adults. Also another pro of teenagers being treated as adults is that they don’t have to ask their parents for money, instead getting a job. But a con of getting a teenager the responsibilities of an adult is that they would get in trouble for their egos and attitude.
Well, considering I already have a job working in a kitchen, I think 15 an unfair time to get a job, but before I had a job I was always wanting money from my parents. So I think it’s a great age.
Oh and to amanda v from period 5, not everyone is under the influence of their parents, some of us barely talk to our parents anymore, ive grown farther from my mom and dad and i know i would do fine on my own if people would hire teens younger, besides not alot of people even listen to our parents anymore, they say ok you shouldnt drink and do drugs but then you watch the news and someone died from overdosing or something so how do they impact “all of us” if we dont listen. Also, some people mature earlier then others and are prepared for life but the laws hold many teenagers back.

i beleive that 16 would be the best age, im 15 and i know i could survive (if more business’s would hire younger instead of publix or whatever) it may seem like a big responsibility but there really is no difference between someone being brought up to be ready to live on there own at 18 then being able to move out at 16 or 15. Everyone is sort of brain washed in a way because we are raised to care about certain things and to care about others so why cant it be any different for a simple age. Our parents cant go 15 years just paying for our stuff because as we get older things are more expensive, Example – age 1: diapers and milk, age 6: school supplies and clothes and toys, age 12: better clothes, cd’s, movie’s, cell phones, mp3 players and then at age 16 yo can get better jobs and support yourself but it isnt a help at all when your 14 or 15. they should give us more to be responcible and then we would learn more about it.

I think Teens today should be considered adults. Not only in jobs but crimes as well. In countries around the world girls and boys marry at 15. OR EVEN YOUNGER!!. I think teens today should be treated as adults. Because not only will it help them be successful business people. But it will help shape their attitudes.
I think that our society does wait too long to treat kids as adults because teenagers don’t want to feel like kids. They want to be treated as young adults. People always say that I look older and I have gotten three job offers. (Of coarse I had to say no, though, because I’m not old enough. If I were, though, I would have said yes!) I liked the feeling of people treating me older. It makes you feel responsible and mature.I think that they should let kids get jobs and stuff at a little bit of a younger age because I know I have wanted a job for the past two years now, but I can’t because I’m not old enough. ( The only reason why I want a job, though, is so I can have more money to spend when I go shopping and to start saving for a car!)
the society does wait too long too treat kids as adults. most kids want to work at the age of 14 for they can start buying their things. and we want to drive and work and live ourselfs.
I think that society does wait too long too treat kids as adults, and i think it would be better if we could start being treated as adults earlier than the age of 18.
Well I happen to think both ways, but I do think society does take too long to treat us responsible teenagers like adults. Yes, there may be many irresponssible teens here in America who are foolish and rude and unserious, but not all teenagers are like that. I do think it should be changed. A better way would be that we could start at 13, but to actually get a job and be treated as an adult, we have to acheive and prove that we are responsible young adults.
I think that society waits too long to treat teenagers as adults because i know that when i was ten i felt growm up and i wanted everyone to stop considering me a kid.
15 is a very young age for the responsibilities that adults have, for example money kids at the age of 15 would not know what to do with it im not saying all people are this way just the majority of people, and working most kids cant do the things it takes to get the money to pay the needed bills so to summarize the aformentioned points no i do not think 15 year olds should have the responsibilities as adults.
No, I do not believe that in American society today the trasnformation from “teenager” to “adult” is too long. Many 15 year old teenagers now a days couldn’t handle such a responsibility as being an adult, having to work constantly to get pay and such. The teenagers that worked in colonial America were brought up to be as such: workers. Those working kids at 15 were humble and knew the importance of work, while many teenagers now haven’t grown up with the same values. We’re all still under the influence of our parents and aren’t prepared in maturity to start acting like adults at our age.
I think that teenagers are given a job at the perfect time here in america because you can start when you are 14 with a simple job. That is good because you get a taste of what it feels like to have that kind of responsibility. But I think that Benjamin Franklin gives them too much responsibility because they areonly kids and kids mess up! So do adults but kids do more. There is a postive to that though because kids take a greater responsibility to learn more at a younger age.
In my honst oppion it can go either or way with that teenages can often be treated as an adult but at the same time some teens arnt quite ready to be concidered an “adult” yet. If we as a whole were more resposible like the teens had to be back then, than i think that it would be fine to let teens be concidered “adults” sooner than at age eighteen
