Topic A:
The Gothic novel is a literary genre, in which the prominent features are mystery, doom, decay, old buildings with ghosts in them, madness, hereditary curses, etc. (The University of Adelaide Library’s website). The Hound of the Baskervilles is full of the supernatural and of curses. The whole book is about this 1 curse!!!! Which by the way is a hereditary curse because it started with Hugo Baskerville and continues through the family. In Ch. 2 it states “Such is the tale my sons, of the coming of the hound which is said to have plagued my family sorely ever since.” (pg17) . They also describe the hound as supernatural with “fire shooting fom its mouth”. So The hound of the Baskervilles is a Gothic novel.
Discussion Topic A- Gothic Fiction
Gothic fiction is a literary genre that mostly incorporates mystery, doom, decay, old buildings with ghosts in them, madness, hereditary curses, and so on. (the university of Adelaide Library)
The Hound of Baskervilles is a gothic novel due to the elements I mentioned. A perfect example of this is mystery. After all, everything in this novel is a mystery, from trying to find out who stole the missing boot to uncovering the man behind the curse, and everything in between.
Furthermore, another element found in the book are hereditary curses. The hound, as it was called, was a hereditary curse for the Baskervilles. It started with Hugo Baskerville and was passed on until it ended with Henry Baskerville. But all through the years between Hugo and Henry the hound was thought of as a real curse that haunted the generations of Baskervilles.

Discussion Topic D:
According to ‘My Page on Plot’, the climax is the turning point in a story that comes about when all conflicts are solved. The climax in The Hound of the Baskervilles can be found when Holmes returns in Chapter 12. “‘It is a lovely evening my dear Watson,’ said a well-known voice.’ The voice was discovered to belong to Sherlock Holmes. He immediately he launches into an explanation and things fall into place. “…I expect we shall have a full knowledge of this case,” said he in Chapter 12, Page 183.

Topic A!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! = )
The Hound of the Baskervilles contains many features of Gothic Literature. Prominent features of this genre of writing are mystery, doom, decay, old buildings containing ghosts, and hereditary curses. ( The University of Adelaide Library’s website ). To begin, this whole book is a mystery. Mr. Holmes is a mystery himself, not to mention the curse of the Baskervilles, which leads me to my next point: the hereditary curse. That’s what this whole book is about, the curse of the Baskervilles. It all startyed when a man name Hugo Baskerville captured a maiden and locked her up in a chamber at Baskerville Hall. With fear, the maiden tried and successfully escaped. When Hugo went to bring her food, among other things, he found that she had indeed escaped. It was said that when he became aware of this, he became “one that hath a devil”. ( Chapter 2, Hound of the Baskervilles ). He and his men went our to search for her. Hugo went ahead by himself. One of the men reported seeing Hugo ride past him with “such a hound of hell as God forbid should ever be at my heels”. This also from chapter 2. When three daringly drunk men went on ahead in the direction instructed, this is what was said to be seen:
“The moon
was shining bright upon the clearing, and there in the centre
lay the unhappy maid where she had fallen, dead of fear and
of fatigue. But it was not the sight of her body, nor yet was
it that of the body of Hugo Baskerviile lying near her,
which raised the hair upon the heads of these three dare-
devil roysterers, but it was that, standing over Hugo, and
plucking at his throat, there stood a foul thing, a great,
black beast, shaped like a hound, yet larger than any hound
that ever mortal eye has rested upon.”
From worldbookonline.com, gothic literature is said to include mysterious abd supernatural events intended to frighten the reader. This hound definately is placed in this category/feature. Also from worldbookonline.com, it said this particular style of writing took lace in gloomy medieval castles, almost the perfect description of Baskerville Hall.
The main elements in gothic novels are mystery, doom, decay, old buildings with ghosts in them, madness, hereditary curses and so on. (University of Adelaide Library) The Hound of the Baskervilles fulfills these requirements because there are many mysteries, many cases of doom, and hereditary curses. The main mystery in the book is who is trying to kill Sir Henry. There is doom when the hound is chasing Sir Henry. The hereditary curse is The Curse Of The Baskervilles. Obviously, Hound of the Baskervilles is a gothic novel.

The book, “The Hound of the Baskervilles” was written a long time ago during the 1900’s. The story is in the old English accent. The Story deals with murders and confusing mysteries, along with the myth of a possessed hound of immense size and strength.
Topic A
A Gothic novel is a literary genre with features like mystery, doom, decay, old buildings with ghosts in them, madness, curses and so on and so forth(World Wide Web) This has something to do with the book because it is a mystery which fits the description of a Gothic novel. The reason why it is a mystery is because Holmes is trying to solve about the hound who is killing the Baskervilles. there is also a curse on the Baskerville family which started with Hugo Baskerville.
Its kind of hard to pick the turning point in this story, because it is a big mystery story and there are many mysteries in it. The big one that sticks out to me is when they start to think that Mr. Stapleton is the reason of the killings and the person that lets the hound out. Then they figured out it was. Also part of the turning point is, when stapleton releases the hound on Sir Henry Baskerville and Holmes and Watson go chasing to help Sir Henry and they shot and killed the hound.
There are 5 different kinds of conflicts in novels,
1. Man vs. Man
2. Man vs. Nature
3. Man vs. Self
4. Man vs. Society
5. Man vs. God
Several of these conflicts are found in “The Hound of the Baskervilles”. Such as man vs. man. Watson and Holmes were after Stapleton, who killed Sir Charles, abused his wife, and tried to kill Sir Henry. The conflict was resolved because Stapleton didn’t make it to his secret hiding place. Another conflict is Man vs. Nature. Holmes, Sir Henry, and Watson had difficulty seeing in the fog on the night the hound was killed. “It was evident to us that all pursuit was in vain until the fog had lifted.” The conflict was resolved the next day when the fog was gone and they could continue their search. There is another Man vs. Nature conflict, the conflict of the hound of the Baskervilles, which the book is based on. The conflict was between Sir Henry and the hound. Sir Henry seeked Holmes’ help to uncover the facts on the mythical hound that dwelled on the moor. It was resolved when Holmes shot the hound. “But the next instant Holmes had emptied five barrels of
his revolver into the creature’s flank. With a last howl of agony and a vicious snap in the air, it rolled upon its back, four feet pawing furiously, and then fell limp upon its side. I stooped, panting, and pressed my pistol to the dreadful, shimmering head, but it was useless to press the trigger. The giant hound was dead.”
In my opinion the climax of the novel is when the “Hound Of The Baskerville kills Sir Henry by biting and snaping his neck. To me that was the turning point. Well there is no real events that led up to the climax. It just states that Sir Henry and his friends were walking through the narrow alley when they saw a terrifying beast. After that they scattered away. But Sir Henry got exuastion while running, so he sat down. When the beast found him Sir Henry was so terrified he about had a heatattack. The beast ripped out his neck with it’s feircing teeth. he didn’t just die of the neck wound, he always died of exaustion. The resolution of the novel is that Sherlock Holmes shot and killed the “Hound Of The Baskerville with his revolver.
Discussion Topic A
The definition of a gothic novel is a literacy genre, in which the prominent features are mystery, doom, decay, madness, hereditary curses, and so on. The gothic novel could be seen as a description of a fallen world(The University of Aidlaide Library’s website described). The Hound of the Baskervilles has everything needed to be a gothic novel such as people being killed, vicious hounds, and curses. For example in the book (Chapter 14 page 221) it says “In front of us as we flew up the track we heard scream after scream from Sir Henry and the deep roar of the hound. I was in time to see the beast spring upon its victim, hurl him to the ground and worry at his throat. But the next instant Holmes had emptied five barrels of his revolver into the creature’s flank. With a last howl of agony and a vicious snap in the air it rolled upon its back, four feet pawing furiously, and then fell limp upon its side. The giant hound was dead”.This is clearly evidence that The Hound of the Baskervilles is a gothic fiction novel.
Discussion Question A
The website for the University of Adelaide Library states that a Gothic-Fiction novel has to have the certain key-elements such as, doom, decay, mystery, old buildings with ghosts, madness, hereditary curses and so on, to be a Gothic-Fiction novel. The Gothic Themes featured in The Hound of the Baskervilles are Mystery and Herditary curses. An example of a herditary curse is the Hound because it has killed two members of the family. the book it’s self is a mystery because of the way Sherlock Holmes does the solving. He does go around saying everything he knows.

Disscusion Question A
The website for the University of Adelaide Library states that a Gothic-Fiction novel has to have the certain key-elements such as, doom, decay, mystery, old buildings with ghosts, madness, hereditary curses and so on, to be a Gothic-Fiction novel. In the story, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are attempting to solve the mystery of a great hound which plagued the family since Sir Hugo Baskerville. The hound itself qualifies as a hereditary curse and doom element because the hound has plagued the family and has killed members of the family. These extracts from chapter 2 clearly qualify those two elements;“Yes, there is a statement of a certain legend which runs in the Baskerville family.” “But it was that standing over Hugo, and plucking at his throat, there stood a foul thing, a great, black beast, shaped like a hound, yet larger than any hound that any mortal eye has rested upon.”

The Hound of the Baskervilles is a Gothic novel. In Ch2 when it talks about the curse of the Baskervilles is an example. The Hound of the Baskervilles fits into the definition when it states that a gothic novel refers to ANY hereditary curses. The curse of the Baskervilles is hereditary since it is protained to that family. Also in Ch2 there is proof. When it is telling the story of Hugo Baskerville it clearly states; “But it was that standing over Hugo, and plucking at his throat, there stood a foul thing, a great, black beast, shaped like a hound, yet larger than any hound that any mortal eye has rested upon.” “Such is the tale my sons, of the coming of the hound which is said to have plagued my family sorely ever since.” (pg17) . Not to squeeeeeeze in there but Holmes solves MYSTERIES! another key element in the explination. Thus, The Hound of the Baskervilles is not only a Gothic novel but also a great mystery.

disscussion question A- gothic literature
The Hound of the Baskervilles is an excellent example of gothic literature. According to the Encyclopidia Americana, at Golier online, that the definitive quality of Gothic is its emphasis on the enigmatic and the sinister—mystery, vice, darkness, death. The hound of the Baskerville’s does qualify to that category. for examle, the situation of “the hound of the baskervilles” is indeed mystery, darkness, and death. Another example from the text is the escaped convict, Selden. He dies on the moor, killed by Stapleton. i believe that covers the “death” part of gothic literature. Even though the gothic literature period took place between the 1700’s and the 1800’s, the hound of the baskerviles is still gothic literature.
Topic A
According to M.H. Abrams , “The term “gothic” has also been extended to denote a type of fiction which lacks the medieval setting but develops a brooding atmosphere of gloom or terror, represents events which are uncanny, or macabre, or melodramatically violent, and often deals with aberrant psychological states.”
the hound of the baskerville can be classified as a gothic novel because the gloom and terror in this book hovers around the hound it’s self. no one knows when it is going to attack but they know it will. Also the fact that Sir Henry’s life is in jepordy by just being on the moor seems very terrifying. The Baskerville family is cursed. The mystery of the curse is another reason to conclude that The Hound Of The Baskerville is a gothic novel.
Discussion Topic D-Climax and resolution
The climax and resolution occur in “the hound of the Baskervilles” at a very surprising time. There are although many parts where the story may begin to change but this particular one is the climax. The climax occurs in chapter 11. The event that clearly led up to this was when curious Watson goes about looking for the ‘man of the tor’. As Watson was on the tor “a well-known voice whom came up behind him and said ‘its a lovely evening my dear watson”. It turned out the man of the tor was no other than Mr. Sherlok Holmes. The climax isn’t very obviuos to spot but you can find ways to help you find this easier by going to ‘my page on plot’ and/or read Tina Morgan’s article on Conflict in Fiction. (www.fictionfactor.com/articles/conflict.html). So as soon as the climax occurs then the whole stroy begins to change and so will your point of view of the “hound of the baskervilles”.

Discussion Topic A: Gothic Novel
Mainly the characteristics of a gothic novel is a literary genre, in which the prominent features are mystery, doom, decay, old buildings with ghosts in them, madness, hereditary curses, etc. (http://etext.library.adelaide.edu.au/themes/gothic.html is where I recieved this information.)
The main charecteristic that the novel contains is a heritary curse. The book says in chapter 2 that Hugo had just had his throat ripped out by “a foul thing, a great, black beast.” Ever since, Mortimer reports, the supernatural hound has haunted the family. The hound just recently killed Sir Charles Baskerville, the latest inhabitant of Baskerville Hall. This statement from the book proves that the book The Hound Of The Baskervilles book is a gothic novel.

The Hound of the Baskervilles satisfies this topic because In Chapter 2 ( The Curse of the Baskervilles) tlaks about people from the bloodline of the baskervilles get killed when they cross the moor at night.“But it was that standing over Hugo, and plucking at his throat, there stood a foul thing, a great, black beast, shaped like a hound, yet larger than any hound that any mortal eye has rested upon.” ( chp. 2 pg 17) This also satisfies thats its a gothic novel becuase it talks then of a hounds that kills baskervilles in the night. Sherlock Holmes and Dr.Watson also solve mysteries together yet another element of a gothic novel.
Discussion A
According to The University of Adelaide Library’s website Gothic fiction elements contain mystery, doom, decay, old buildings with ghosts in them, madness, hereditary curses and so on. In the Hound of the Baskerville Detective Holmes and Watson try to solve a mystery a about a hound creature who has killed many lives. While investigating the Hound it is said that a curse was put upon the Baskerville family, which were the victims of the Hound killing. The Hound’s curse that was laid upon the Baskervilles is a hereditary curse which is one of the Gothic fiction elements. In chapter 2 they mentioned that “Yes, there is a statement of a certain legend which runs in the Baskerville family.” The Hound itself is a Gothic fiction element having to kill people in the book, because it is similar to the elements ghosts and madness. In the book they said that “a foul thing, a great, black beast, shaped like a hound, yet larger than any hound that any mortal eye has rested upon.”

Discussion Topic A-Gothic Fiction
The round about definition of a Gothic novel is that its a literary genre, in which the prominent features are mystery, doom, decay, old buildings with ghosts in them, madness, hereditary curses and so on basically scary ghoolish type of things (The University Of Adelaide Library Website). A Gothic Novel is basically what this so called mystery novel of The Hound Of The Baskervilles is about or based upon. For Example, The Discussion in the story about the issue of the curse of the Ferocious, Beastly, Hound who will basically kill anyone who sets foot on the moor. Although, The beast will kill anyone, The Curse Of The Baskervilles is said to be that the Hound will kill any of the Baskervilles that sets foot on the moor which may explain the cause of the 2 deaths in the Baskerville family who happen to live upon the moor. Now lets look back into the definition of a Gothic Novel…it says that any form of hereditary curses or madness is considered to be a Gothic novel so clearly, The Curse Of The Baskervilles is described in that definition. As the Book says ( In Chapter 2 Page.17 )” It was not the sight of her body, nor yet was that of the body of Hugo Baskervilles lying near her, which raised the hair upon the heads of three daredevil roysters, but it was that, standing over Hugo, and plucking at his throat, there stood a foul thing, a great black beast, shaped like a hound yet larger than any hound that any mortal eye has rested upon”. Obviously, This is basic substantial proof that “The Hound Of The Baskervilles” is a Gothic Fiction Novel.

According to The Gothic Novel page at The University of Adelaide Library’s website, The definition of Gothic Novel is a literary genre in which the prominent feature are mystery, doom, decay, old buildings with ghosts in them, madness, hereditary curses and so on. The Hound of the Baskerville is considered a gothic novel because it contains a curse. In Chapter 2 the title is called “The curse of the Baskerville.” The curse is about a hound who seems to killl any family member related to Sir Hugo Bakerville. This is a heredity curse which is an element of a gothic novel. Also Detective Sherolck Holmes and his partner Dr.Watson try to solve the mystrey if Sir Charles Baskerville, a desendent of Sir Hugo, was really killed by a hound. Mystery is another element in which a gothic novel needs to be one.

In the definition of a gothic novel, it says that a novel of this kind must contain hereditary curses. “Yes, it is a statement of a certain legend which runs in the Baskerville family.” said in chapter 2, The Curse of the Baskervilles, is an example of how the book is a gothic novel. That quote means that there is some sort of legend or “curse” in the family of the Baskervilles, which is a factor of a gothic novel. Another example, “…but it was that, standing over Hugo, and plucking at his throat, there stood a foul thing, a great, black beast, shaped like a hound, yet larger than any hound that ever mortal eye has rested upon.”. again in chapter 2. That fragment deals with the fact that a gothic novel has mysterious characteristics in it. Obviously, this “black beast” is portrayed as immortal creature which is of course mysterious.
