Freak The Mighty – Sugestions for Improvement – Not Required
Do not ask if this is extra credit. It isn’t. This is an opportunity for you to have a hand in lesson plan and unit design.
Post to this discussion anything you would suggest to improve the unit for Freak The Mighty:
- In-class activities
- Out-of-class activities (field trips)
- Vocabulary words
- Blog Discussion Topics
Thanks for participating in the Freak The Mighty Discussion Series (for grades – hehe). If you participated, and you know who you are, you contributed to not only to your own growth, but to the growth of all those you interacted with.
Keep It Up!!
So, if you have any suggestions, post them here.
C Yes, the main character does develop and grow as a result of the incidents in the story.
1 The main character, Rebel, goes through many events or episodes that she grows from. One of them is when Tiger goes missing during the storm at night. After this event she becomes more aware of her sorroundings and whom she can trust. Another one is when she first meets Moses and he tells her all about his scripts and movies and how the house is a great place to shoot the movie since it is creepy. After that she does think of the house as creepy and frigthtning. A great place to shoot a horro movie too. Before this incident she thought of the house as old-fashioned, not creepy.

I also think we should go on field trips Mr. Moshe when can we go on field trips
i think a good thing would be out of class activities. its not that people would want to miss classes. i think it actually works. like we could go to a medieval museum or something. Field trips are always fun you learn and have a good time. this would give a great kick to the blog. like you could say how you thought the field trip was and what you really thought and learned at the field trip?
I think a better way we could do it is by reading aloud as a class.
I have come up with a few ideas for a webquest on fire works.
INDIVIDUAL:
-Write a paragraph describing two or three other uses for fireworks, support your ideas.
-Make a chart consisting of the pros and cons of using, creating and having fireworks. Give examples aswell.
-Describe the creation of fireworks and present to the class. This can be done in a story, song, peom, comic…be creative.
PAIR:
-Draw a picture of a type of firework, Must be specific.ex: spider, or horsetail.
-Draw a picture of one of the structures in a fireworkshow.ex: grand finale.
-Create an invention having to do with the use of fireworks. Draw it out and describe its uses.
-Make your own firework. Draw it out.
-Make a chart explaining why fireworks are displayed on the fourht of july. Think, Why?do they do it When?did it first begin Who? first thought of it. etcetera, etcetera.
-Acrostic poem of “FIREWORK”
GROUP:
-Study the structure of a fireworks show, what goes on behind the bright lights. Create your own fireworks show, and give each person a job. Have everyone explain what goes on and how their job affects the outcome of a fireworks show.
ex: choeregraopher of fireworks sequence.
ex: cost and expenses
ex: theme
etc…
I just sort of brain stormed. Do you want me to find research sites too? because all i really did was go on google and type in fireworks history and stuff and i started off from there. :]
My suggestion would be to read the book out loud. That way everyone would be at the same spot and everyone would have finished the book. In my class not everyone finished the book, but if we read the book out loud, then we would all finish the book and at the same time. i also think that reading the book out loud would be better because you would be able to understand what your reading better then just reading it in your head.
I MEAN 3!
SORRY THE LAST 4 BLOGS I SENT WERE TO THE WRONG ONE!!!
MOSES:
Moses has a great deal of affect on Rebel. He makes her think in so many ways. Like what she wants in a boy she will marry. He makes her pick up Tigers poop that is definitely not something she would do considering she is a rebel who refuses to do things others tell her to (even though she has grown out of it). He makes her angry by leaving her in charge of both dog while he takes pictures. He creates problems by having such a big imagination. Moses makes Rebel scared and feel uncomfortable by being a quicker thinker than her, and being able to realize things before her. He does not really encourage her to do anything but they make an incredible team. Also Rebel sort of likes him, or at least it seems that way.
VIOLA:
Viola and gram are very much alike. She does not really have much of an affect on Rebel as much as Gram though. She does, however, make Rebel think because she finds her to be quite out of the ordinary or eccentric. She does not make her do anything she wouldn’t normally do. Viola does not really make Rebel angry because she does not really know her. She does create problems by having a dog. Viola does not really scare her or make her feel uncomfortable. She does not encourage Rebel to do anything but when she encourages her grandson Moses it somehow ends up encouraging her.
GRAM:
Gram affects Rebel in many ways. Yes, she does make her think. Rebel wonders why is it that Pookie is her grandmothers dog but she is the one that’s intitled the job of “pooper scooper.” Gram does not really make Rebel do anything she would not normally do, because remember they are both “rebels.” Rebel gets upset one or two times about her grandmother 1) not telling her that Moses was 6 feet tall and 2) that she has to pick up Pookies poop! But she never really gets ANGRY! Gram and Rebel are much alike so she does not scare or make Rebel feel uncomfortable. Gram does however encourage Rebel (example: She encouraged her to come with her to the old house in the first place).
to make the Freak the Mighty reading more influencial to next year’s students, mabye you could try making a play out of it, or having a comepetition to see who acts like one of the characters the best, using props, costumes, personality and more. Just a suggestion.
to make the story more interesting i think we should reed them on a c.d so everyone is on the same page and so all the people should pass the test.
it’s me again, maybe next year you shouldn’t do the blog, my mom thinks i’m here talking to some 60 year old guy on a chat room.she keeps checking over my shoulder, it’s anoying and is it just me or don’t your eyes hurt after siting in front of the computor for so long, after all you do want us to be able to read.
I agree with Chantelle.m we should have more class discussions and acting like nia said it would show how much we read. like some people who didn’t read it wouldn’t have a clue whats going on.I also think that you should give us a certian chapter to read up to by the end of each lesson ,not just on freak the mighty, so every on is reading at the same place so noone can spoil it by saying whats going to happen next. it would also be easier if the guy with the nosiey thing did it after school i can’t read fast in nosie. I feel uncomfortable be so close to it.
I think it would have been easier if we all had our own indivial book that we are reponsible for.Do you think it would work if us students started a petition form this year for next year becase that way you could get through books quicker. plus it would be easier if you made us read the book first then wacth the movie so we get to imagine our characters better.because after wacthing the movie first i no longer had the chance to imagine the characters myself.and sir you could make the books more challenging after all you are teaching advance classes chose books for adults. thats the sorts of books i read, books like the colour purple, still wacth, the women without a past ,v.c andrews books you get the idea(i did not just make those books up).I have know time for capital letters ihave adead line.
MR. MOSHE, CAN SOMEONE ELSE AND I MAKE A JEPARDY GAME FOR EXTRA CREDIT TOO PLEASE?
I THINK THAT THE “FREAK THE MIGHTY’ UNIT CAN BE INPROVED BY WE SHOULD HAVE DISUSSED THE BOOK MORE IN CLASS.ALL OF THIS SAY NOTHING IN CLASS IS HARD. WE ALSO SHOULD HAVE DEBATES ABOUT THE BOOK ANS THE OTHER BOOKS THAT WE READ.ON EMORE THING WE SHOULD HAVE MORE THAN ONE WEB LINK.
i think that nias idea to act out scenes in the book is a really good idea. you could put us in groups and every group could be responsible for 1 or 2 chapters from the book and act them out. that would help us get a better understanding of the book and get to know our fellow classmates better. 🙂
i think that the books we read in class, we should be able to take home. everybody in the class would be responsible for one book to take home and bring to school so that it wouldnt take us that long to read it in class because sometimes i get distracted in class and only end up reading about 18 pages a day. or sometimes i read a paragragh but dont know what i just read. i think that would be good to take the books home. but since we dont have enough books for everybody to get their own, we should read books where we have an abundant supply. or some people could share a book. also, i think that instead of doing blogs online, we should just have discussions in class. like we should have a certain day to finish the book by, and the topics that you would post on the blogs, we should answer orally, and see if peoples opinions differ. i think that that way, it would increase class participation and be funner. especially since you dont always tell us when you post a new blog, and its hard to keep up like that.
Lua,
For an extra credit grade, I would like you and a friend or two to design a Jeopardy style trivia game for the book Freak The Mighty. Think about this and post back here with your idea. Give a full description – Rules, Board design, points awarded, phases of the game, team breakdown (# per team), etc. you create it, then we play it. Post your idea here.
Nia,
Look over the Webquest about Castles,Knights, and Gwen of Air for ideas on how to design one. Create a WebQuest on the history, creation, and use of Fireworks. i don’t think we can justify a field trip to see fireworks though. I’d love to see your idea for a WebQuest design. research, writing, group work, pair work, individual work. Say something that has two individual assignments, and one group/pair assignemnt. Think about it, and post back here with your idea.
Jamel,
That’s a great idea, but the film is not actually divided up exactly the way the book is. If it were, we could do comparisons between the book and the film. I’ll try to get things that match up for the other books we read. THANKS!!
Megan,
You are correct. I am planning on devoting time to reading aloud for the books we cover in the future. Thanks!!
Mr.Moshe,,, I thought the book Freak The Mighty was …good. But it was also a little confusing to me, but overall I guess it was good. I think what have made it better is if we had more time, because I didn’t get to finish so I failed part 4 of the test because, odviously, I didn’t get to finish…so yea.
i think the class should participate in trivia based on the book. It will prepare us for the test and we will understand the book through eachothers veiwpoints, answers, and comments. We could divide the class into teams. i would learn better that way. It’s worth try.
We could also have students act out a part of the story or pertray how the character’s personality is in a short skit. We could even bring in props.
Oh i have another suggestion. I think that if we went to a fire work show we would actually be able to feel Kevin’s excitement. Oh and one more…It would be fun if we could act out scenes in the class and then explain why each character reacted as he/she did.
okay, now im done.
Discussion on how we relate to both characters Max and Kevin. Alos a discussion on how we might of acted differently from Max or Kevin with each event they faced.
I alos think that if we have to do SO much work, and we are given a specific due date and are intimidated into thinking if we dont get it done then we are in trouble. then we should actually be able to turn it in and get a grade for all things we worked on. Other than that i have no further suggestions.
your welcome:)
A good activity would be to just discuss the book what we liked about it, what we disliked…..NOT ON THE BLOG! Aloud in class and we should talk about what sort of things we learned about based on the book and then watch the movie…..
For Freak the Mighty I think we should do an activity relating to some theme of the book, like how friendship affects our lives, or how living with a disability could change the way we do things. We could also just have a whole period with an oral discussion about the book. Maybe we could even watch the movie.
i think somethiing to make freak the mighty unit better would be that we should have read the book outloud ,we all would have been kind of on the same track and like muh spanish teacher says is that if you read something out loud you can process and remember it better beacause your hearing it . i also think that we should have finished reading the book and then we should hav watched max the mighty or w/e tha sequel was called
In my opinion, to make Freak the Mighty better, we should finish watching the movie. The book was good but maybe finishing the movie will help the people that didn’t finish the book understand it more. After that…….I don’t know.
What I think you should do to make Freak the Mighty a better Learning Experience is to read a chapter then wath a chapter on the DVD player. I also think you should read aloud (as Meagan said ) and review what we read. These two things that i suggested are what i think you should of done.
As we talked about this mourning,What would make freak the mighty a better learning experience is having us write an essay that summarizes up the whole book to see if we are reading to the point you would like us to be at and by the time you want the book to be done we would be done with writing our summary essay and there would be no excuse and we would not half to write a journal entry at the end of the book rushing. : )
To make The Freak The Mighty better I think we should read aloud. We should do that for any book because some people fall behind. I had to buy the book so I could catch up because of the vocab. It is easier for some people to remeber thinkg if they read aloud. That’s only my suggestion though.
