The Year of the Hangman – Discussion Begins THIS Week
Hey all!! I truly have no idea what to expect. Well that’s not entirely true.
In addition to the 161 students here at Westpine Middle, we will almost certainly have readers joining us from Liberty Missouri. Additionally, because Mr. Langhorst has mentioned posting the fact that we are having this discussion on his blogspot page and mentioned us in his podcast, people could join us from all corners of the globe.
Even Mr. Blackwood, the author himself, has voiced interest in dropping in.
This should prove to be very exciting. I only hope everyone in attendance and participation will have as much fun being a part of this as I have been having researching and working on building it.
Each week during the four week time period we will suggest reading a certain number of chapters and several questions relating to the novel. We hope each particpant will make at least one comment each week. You are welcome to post as many comments as you please; not only in reply to the orignial question, but also to any comment other participants make. Our hope is to create an online conversation about this novel.

Neha S Per. 2,
In missouri we do lots. in the summer loads of people go to oceans of fun and worlds of fun, and we also swim. in the fall we all go back to school and fall sports start up. in missouri we do all sports and lots of people do many sports. what about in missouri???
Yeah, the begining is a bit challenge but that’s what makes the book good. I love the fact that i get a new perspective on what today may be like if we didn’t win the revolutionary war.
Alexis,
I would say i am the opposite of you. I am in cheerleading and in swimteam and i read lots of books. It keeps me busy.
For the start of it i think this book is great…. even though it has some challenging vocab, it’s still good, it really interests me alot because as the chapters go things get better and better, im not into that much reading but i guess this 1 has caught me this
Im really excited about posting to blogs now. Its amazing that now I can see someone elses idea of “The Year of the Hangman”, who lives somewhere totally different.

Also Iam really enjoying this book. I usualy dont read alot of books about
history. But this book caught my attention. Theres so much action and it seems like every chapter keeps you wondering what will happen next.
Honeybun,
You’ve got a point there! If I lived in Missouri, I probably would think that summer was my favorite season! Down here in the winter, it is just perfect. It is cold, but not too cold. I know when you think of Florida, you think of the beach, but I hardly ever go to the beach. One thing that I think I would miss, though, if I lived in Missouri (because it may be too cold) is to play golf. It is my favorite sport and I can play it all year round down here! The only bad thing, though, is that in the summer, it gets too hot and humid. I still love the winter the most!
I have never seen snow before and I would really like to see it one day. Florida is cool there are lots of things to do down here. What do you guys in missouri do.
Sarah, I sort of agree with you. I Love the cold too, but again it’s nice to have some warm feeling. I was in my room sleeping the other day, and I woke up at about 4:00 am in the morning, and I was SUPER cold, it seemed as if the cold just came out of nowhere, at that time I really missed the warm feeling. Hehe.
Sarah A. P.5,
I could see where your comming from and to be honest after a 3 month summer i am ready for the cold and then we have a 4 month winter. one of the number one reasons i like the winter is because i am on a very competitative swimteam and all of my best friends are on it and we have a blast. If you lived up here what do you think would be your favorite season?? Mine is the spring because its never to cold or to hot, it’s perfect.
Well i am sorry you think that, missouri is beautiful when it snows and beautiful when its all in bloom. We very rarely get snow if anything we get ice. we mabe get one-none snow storms during the winter so it is mainly just cold

Honeybun,
I must admit…I am the exact opposite. I love the cold and I HATE the heat! Every year, it is so hot for like 9 or 10 months and then it is cool (not cold! COOL!) for the rest of the year. It just today started to get cool (believe it or not), and I am LOVING it!!!!!!!!! I wish I were up there right now where it is cold. Hey! Want to switch places? Just kidding! I wish we could though! If you knew how hot and humid it gets down here and you had to live here all year long, trust me…you wouldn’t want to!
When I think of Missouri, I think of snow, the cold, and a part of my family that lives up there. When ever I here somebody say or I read the word Missouri, I think of misery! I don’t know why, but I do.
I’d rather be in the cold. I haven’t seen snow for years. I miss the weather…
Florida isn’t all about beaches, sand, and sunshine. I lived out of state a couple of years ago, so I understand. We have hurricanes and a massive elderly population–making Florida a big retirement state.
Missouri reminds me of Huckleberry Fin and Tom Sawyer… or…. however their names are spelled. I don’t really have any unique thoughts about Missouri for an unknown reason.
Well because i live here in liberty when i think of florida i think of the beach, sand and the warm sunshine. Up here it is freezing and we have lots of snow. Over all i would love to be in florida right now. every summer i cant wait for the heat to be over but when winter hits i cant wait for the warmth to return.
I think the reason you think of Mississippi and Missouri is because the Mississippi River and MIssouri flow together and both rivers run through Missouri.
OOPS!!! I mean i was a weird KID not kind hahaha woo!
When I think of Missouri I think of Mississippi. For what reason? I couldn’t really tell you. When I was smaller I used to think they were the same state until I noticed there was quite a difference in the spellings. yeah I was a weird kind, actually I still am, please no personal attacks on that comment about being weird!!!! :-] Don’t delete this because of the smiley Mr.Moshe!!!! ThankS!!!
I think that it is fasanating how the book shows how life would be like in the colonies if we lost the war. As i read i think about how life today would be if America lost the war.
When i think of Missouri, i think of Tom Sawyer, and the Fairly Oddparents =)
mr.moshe from reading this “thread” of the bolg I am very excited I think that it is a great idea to have two totally opposite classes that know nothing about eachother and work on the same assignment. i do have a question and a comment… does this thing mean that they will be doing the exact same bolgs as us and getting graded for them and are we allowed to interact with the other students like comment on there comments and discuss with them what we think??……….just wondering
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
my comment…
i see that mr.langhorstsays that they are “digging out from two ice and snow storms that have hit the past two weekends -” that is pretty crazy i have never even seen snow before and to imagine how terrible an ICE STORM would be is unimagineable(( i think thats spelled wrong))i saw something on the news about a terrible ice storm and i saw that everything was completely covered and frozen with ice it seems pretty dangerous! i have two questions
1.) do the students in missouri have school considering their circumstances
2.)when will they be starting the bolg discussions
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
thanks mr.moshe i was just wondering
~Lindsey (( ur most favoritest student.. and yes i know that it not a word))
Never mind, I figured it out.
Do we post to this or do we post to the other ones? I’m confused.
As a side note, we are currently still digging out from two ice and snow storms that have hit the past two weekends – something that you are probably not dealing with in Florida. We think of Florida and think of sunny beaches, theme parks and oranges. What do you think of when you think of Missouri?
—————–
Hehe. Yeah Florida is sort of along the lines of that! Wow! It seems cold there! I think of Missouri, as a cold and quite place. The complete opposite of what you all think of Florida. Hehe.
—————–
This seems as if it will be fun! I cant wait until everyone starts to particapate! ^_^
—————–
And a big “moo” to you Mr. Moshe! All of you that are reading this, and are confused, it is an inside joke! ^_^ Hehe.
Hello from up north in Liberty, Missouri. My name is Eric Langhorst and I teach 8th grade American History in Liberty, Missouri. (I am using my real name since I’m a teacher but my students will be usin pen names.)
My class read The Year of the Hangman last year and this year I would like to participate in this project. I would like to thank Mr. Moshe for being the moderator of this blog. It should be fun. I have around 35 copies of the novel and have checked them out to some of my 8th grade students. They will be joining you along the way. I hope they learn much from you and you from them. It is an incredible thing to have two classes reading and commenting on the same book from different parts of the country. It is a very interesting book and has some great discussion points.

Talk to you soon.
While I am in the know about the book and the story line as such, I am not willing to address this question personally.
Would anyone like to take a shot at this question?
Does Creighton’s uncle, Hugh Gower, know that Creighton is lying about going there on his own? How do you know the answer? Provide proof from the text that your answer is right.
Mr. Moshé
What questions? Are you going to give us questions? I have a question about the book…
Does the uncle know Creighton is lieing about going there on his own?
This book confuses me, but it seems like a really good book!
