Week Two – Question #1
The setting for this portion of the novel is the city of New Orleans. Since the devastation of Hurricane Katrina last fall there has been much discussion on the future of this important American city.
How do you feel about rebuilding the city of New Orleans? Do you think that the government should spend billions of dollars to rebuild the city of New Orleans and protect it from a future hurricane or should the citizens of New Orleans be asked to pick up and move somewhere else and the city not be rebuilt?
I think that New Orleans should be rebuild. It would be horrible to see one of America’s most memorable cities dissapear. The government has no right to kick the people of New Orleans out of their city.I bet all the people there would help rebuild it so that they can start living in their own city again.
I think that New Orleans should be rebuilt no matter WHAT the cost. The city a a big part of our history, not to mention a big part of the country itself. New Orleans is a merry city known for hearty celebrations ( Mardi Gras!) and rich culture. The government has no right to force people from their home city, maybe a place where generations of their families lived. It’s wrong. Then again, is there really a way to make New Orleans hurricane proof? It would be heart-breaking for the city to be returned to normal, and the people back to regular lives, only for another storm to destroy it again. I think that it’s not fair that there should be any reluctance to rebuild the city. If Boston,New York, or Chicago were destroyed, they’d be rebuilt in a flash.
I think that New Orleans should be rebuilt. No matter how much destruction there is, the people there have lost so much already. Some of the people who lived in New Orleans have lost family members and loved ones. If they find out that the city will never rebuilt then they may lose the little hope that they have. Though I agree that New Orleans should be rebuilt, it will cost alot of money. The money could be raised and some of it could be donated to New Orleans. New Orleans was a great city before Katrina and I think its citizens deserve a second chance at life in the city that they call home.
I kind of think that the government should rebuild New Orleans and kind of think that they shouldn’t.Research have found that if the government rebuilds New Orleans it’ll cost billions I personally think that they shouldn’t rebuild New Orleans because their is many other things we could use that money for that would really benefit us.For example, millions die from aids every year and we still dont have a cure for it after many years of knowing that it exist.I strongly agree with Kyle S. that if you dont have assurance that this won’t happen again why would you spend billions on rebuilding New Orleans then a hurricane hit and demolishes it all over again;what are we to do take billions and rebuild it again? But then there’s that side of me that has sympathy for the victims that lost everyting in the hurricane and that have lived in New Orleans their whole lives.I know what it’s like to have to move, meet new people and adapt to new surrondings. Many people that lived there cherished that city and would be profoundly escatic if it was rebuilt. So, whatever the government decides to do I strongly suggest they evaluate and look over all the advantages and disavantages rebuilding or not rebuilding New Orleans could lead to.
I think New Orleans should be rebuilt because there is a lot of american history there, and i feel that there would be a lot of devestation if we asked the people of new orleans to just pick up and move, and tell them they could never come back. Also, like matt said, if that happened to you, you would want the government to fix your home so you could get your life back to normal as soon as possible. I definitely think the government should spend the money and rebuild new orleans, to the safest standards, so that everything could be restored to back to normal.
I think the city of New orleans should be rebuilt no matter how much it costs because that city was home to millions of people and they were cast out due to the hurricane and if that had happened to me i would have wanted the government to pay all the money in the world so that I could at least be able to try to get my life back and at least try to get things back to normal.
I think that the city of New Orleans should be rebuilt. The government should spend billions of dollars on their city because it’s their home. Having their home blown away was horrible just from the hurricane, but to be told that they can never go back and live there because the government isn’t going to be rebuild is a little harsh don’t you think. I mean, could you just imagine being our age and having a hurricane hit your city and take your home away then be told you can never go back because it will never be there again, and not only was it kids our age but kids a lot younger than us to. Not only this but what about all of the memories they had to leave behind because it will never be there again. I couldn’t just get up and leave one day knowing that all of my memories will be left behind because of a hurricane and they will never be there again.
I don’t think the government should waste there time and money rebuilding the new orleans. Huricane cathrina may have been the first, but there is nothing to say it’s the last. Yes it would be painful to lose your home, but isn’t it more painful not knowing the next time you can lose it agian. I think new orleans should be the peoples choice, they should should rebuild it ,and live there if they won’t. the goverment on the other should try providing the people of new orleans with safer land.
I definately think that the city of New Orleans should be rebuilt. It is a major city in this country and to not rebuild it would be such a bad idea. They shouldn’t care how much money it takes to rebuild and protect this from happening again because this affected so many people. So I do think they should rebuild and protect the great city of New Orleans.
To this question I agree and disagree about rebuilding the city of New Orleans. I agree because many people are suffering right now without a home, food, and protection. People die from drowning and the people who survived the flood dies of starvation or sicknesses. Some people lived in New Orleans all of their lives and now don’t even know where to go since Texas is being overpopulated. I disagree about rebuilding the city of New Orleans because this event might happened again. From global warming we may have longer hurricane seasons in the future since the Gulf of Mexico’s water is going to increase in temperature. We may start having hurricanes beyond a level five and the dam they have wouldn’t be strong enough again. Being under sea-level is very dangerous and shouldn’t risk thousands of people’s live yet again.
They should spend those billions of tax payers dollars on moving the people, not rebuilding. Rebuilding would just make it fall again and have the country go through this catastrophe again, instead spend the money on those who lived through it, and build a memorial for hose who didn’t. By spend i mean “reinburse” them and help pay off a house of some sort until they’re back on their feet and living somewhere new.
I think that The city of New Orleans shoudl defiantly be built again. I mean imagine if our town were to have had the same thing happen to it. We would all want it bak to normal. We would want to stay where we have been all our lives for some of us. It may be alot of money to do but I thnink it will be worth it and we should also get better hurricane protection in areas such as here that gets hurricanes.
I believe that they should rebuild New Orleans, it’s been around since the Louisiana Purchase, it has almost been around as long as the colonies have. To let a hurricane destroy the city that has been with us for all of this time just doesn’t seem right. If they do build New Orleans maybe the citizens should pitch in and help by putting some effort into rebuilding the city. If not then the entire nation is doomed to losing a very historic city just because of one hurricane, and some people who were to lazy to help the government clean up.
I think New Orleans should be rebuild because it wasn’t there fault, and if that happened to another state they would repair it in my opinion so they should repair New Orleans. The government should spend billions of dollars to repair New Orleans because if they do that they are building peoples lives back and would bring more people to New Orleans.
Well what I think in my opinion, is that New Orleans should be rebuilt because it is not the peoples fult that the place they lived, the place they called their home was swept away in matter of hours. The government should pay the mount that is need to secure that nothing like that happens every again and to make sure to keep up with the lebbeis to secure them, so that in another tropical storm they wont calapse. The government and the people of New Orleans should pull together and try to build up the town of New Orleans.
In my opinion, I think that the government should spend millions of dollars rebuilding New Orleansn because they should have thought about all the worst case scenarios for storms considering there was a hurricane there before. How could you tell someone to make a new life somewhere else. How would you feel if something happened to to your house and everything around you was destroyed, adn they told you, you have to move to Georgia, or other near states because the government won’t spend money on rebuilding your neighborhood. So personally I think they should rebuild it, so everyone can start their life again.
In my opinion, New Orleans should rebuild the homes and stuff like that but they shouldn’t spend so much money on it. If they want to live there then they shouldn’t be allowed to live by the leeves and by huge bodys of water. That’s how New Orleans got destroyed, the leeves gave out and many of the houses sitting by them were dragged away and many people were killed.
I think that they should rebuild New Orleans because it wouldn’t be fair to the citizens that live here to have to move somewhere else. I know i wouldn’t want to leave if that happened to me. If the U.S. wastes so much money in a meaningless wars why wouldn’t they spend a little more to rebuild New Orleans. It would cost a couple of million dollers but the country wastes more money on dumb things. All the people wod benafit from this because they would get their lives back. If this happens it would probily take around 5-10 year to restore the whole city to how it was before the hurricane.
In my opinion, they should rebiuld New Orleans because one of my favorite football teams play there, the city is a great place to go on vacation,Mardi Gras, and you can’t tell the people to go live somewere else. Some people have been living there, their entire life and its a home town to alot of famous people and other people. You can’t just distroy New Orleans.
WOHH I MADE SOME MISTAKES IN THAT FIRST POST SO I CORRECTED IT NOW, BETTER LATE THAN NEVER !!!!!!
I strongly believe that the government should not only spend a billion dollars on rebuilding the city of New Orleans, I think they should spend a bajillion gazillion dollars!!! For the simplicity of we apparently have that much money. I mean we’re loaded so much, we can give money to other countries. Hmmm. let’s think of one..OH! How about Iraq as a contender. President Bush is so eager to be over there, worrying about their government, blah blah blah, risking other people’s lives as long he’s alright, doesn’t really matter to him, get over there soilders and fight for our country. Yeah and I’m Aretha Franklin. Ok now I’m getting off topic. So anyway back to the main point. There is no doubt in my right or left (yes left too) mind that we should rebuild. I don’t see the big fuss or the big question over here. I mean, the picture is pretty obvious to me. People want their home back and their life. Yes there is always a possibilty of something like this happening again. But honestly it could happen to any of us, so aren’t we all putting it on the line?

I think New Orleans should be rebuild. The government should help rebuild this great city. Before, Katrina this was a fun filled place with heart and joy with its mardi gras and other historical events. The government should put money into this city so it can return to what it was. As well, as to rebuild the houses and communities so the people can come back to there hometown and turn back this city to what is New Orleans. Well, I think if the government pays attention to this subject than to others then maybe this could happen.
on account of new orleans being destroyed by hurricane katrina i feel very bad because it was very sad about all those who didn’t make it. I also feel that new orleans should be rebuilt becuase alot of people live there even though it won’t never be the same knowing that all those people were killed the least thing that the government can do is give back to those who lost their lives or either lost their family members in this tragedy.
For those of you who mentioned that this question brought to mind other questions, I ask you…
What are those questions?
Use the reproters formula to figure out what questions to ask.
Who…
What…
Where…
When…
Why…
How…
——
Who would benefit?
What would it cost?
Where would the people come from to rebuils the city?
When would it start? When would it end? Would it ever end?
Why?
How much would it cost?
——
These are some questions that come to mind for me when I think about this issue. What are your questions?
Would it be the same New Orleans it was?
I feel New Orleans should be rebuilt. Why not? I mean Bush spends tons of money in Iraq each year. Not noticing that here in America we need the help the most. I dont want to get off topic but its all blends in. Think if we used the money we spend on weapons and other useless things America wouldnt so many homeless people. So this all leads back into New Orleans. It should be rebuilt America just need to focus on America for now. Then when we’re better we can critize other countries.
uhh. I hope Iam not offending anyone.
I don’t think the government should be rebuid New Orleans. Even though many memories blossomed there, the most effective memory, the one hurricane katrina generated, still lingers on most likely clogging joyous releifs. Even if the government builds it who vows the same many disasters won’t emerge and once again leave New Orleans to their knees? The governement could instead, comprimise. With Billions of dollars they could regenerate homes and lives for The people of New Orleans making them feel more at home elsewhere. Although it won’t be the same it can leave them with a less devastating, and safer enviornment where terrible memories don’t wave hello at each possible street corner. I don’t mean to seem like I don’t care about their feelings but imagine if you lived next to a tree which was very old and suddenly it was struck by lighting leaving you shadeless and all your memories of you climbing it or building your first treehouse upon it’s branches are suddenly demolished. You could plant another one but, it would never hold that same bond with you it had before, and it would never be the same. It provided you with shelter and good times but you have no choice but to let it go.Thus, in my opinion, i believe it shouldn’t be rebuilt.
Brittany, I did say in my comment earlier that if I was told that I couldn’t go back to my home, I would be upset, but at the same time, I wouldn’t want to risk my health over a home. If you had to choose between your home, or your health, what would you pick? If you choose your health over a home, you could always start over somewhere else, but you can’t get a diease, die, and come back to life again. I would choose my health over a home because I could always find a better home.
Rebuidling the city of New Orleans is a wonderful proposition, who wouldn’t want to go back to the place they used to call home? Maybe it is worth for the United States to spend billions of dollars for a city that means alot to U.S’ history. However it is rather a risk, nature it’s something we can’t control and when rebuilding New Orleans is put to work, what if another Hurricane hits again and the people’s hopes are demolished? It would then mean rebuilding, destroying, rebuilding again, perhaps New Orleans should be rebuilt but in a convenient way for the US not to risk to much money and for New Orleans to be placed according to where disaster will less likely hit in the same location.
I definately feel that the city of New Orleans should be rebuilt. The residents have so many memories and they can’t be asked to just pack up their things and leave everything behind. Put yourself in their position. Florida is a hurricane state. What if the city of Sunrise asked all the residents to evacuate for good? This would mean leaving our hometown, friends, and everything else behind. It’s just not acceptable. New Orleans is absolutely worth a blillion dollars, so I believe the government should use that much to rebuild the city. I’m sure you would think your hometown is worth a billion dollars as well.
well this question brings up about million more questions. Well the city was destroyed and the people who were living in New Orleans at the time are american so it’s our job as americans to go and help a felow state out i think we should spend over a billion dollars on fix new orleans
Well I believe the city of new Orleans should be rebuilt because this problem could be the start of others. Put it this way, we Floridians would be a clean target if they decide not to rebuild New Orleans and they would all come to Florida. Then as you all know Florida is known for hurricanes so when we have a disaster like that were will we all run too. We would then crowd other northern states till America is crowded, people start leaving the U.S and we have no control of what happens to the country and especially what is happening in Iraq, you can just imagine what happens if they get there hands on the country. So what I am trying to say is government should spend billions of dollars to rebuild the city of New Orleans and the only reason it was that bad is because the levees broke and if our levees broke then we would be in the same predicament. Then the city should mostly focus on what Samantha stated they should get a better drainage system and build the houses and levees stronger.
This is a hard question to answer because either way there will be suffering and hardship for the people of New Orleans. But I rather them rebuild the city but so much repair would take time so the goverment should offer safe and secure homes for them until the new New Orleans is done ( which will infact take some years ) so that is a genral idea of what I have in mind.
I think that New Orleans should be rebuilt, so that it is a safer place and home to everyone that lives there, I also believe that it is not fair for those who have lived there basically all thier lives, having to move. That would make them have to start all over again, build back those memories, and good-times that happened before. Another thing, I think that the government should spend billions of dollars to rebuild the city of New Orleans and protect it from a future hurricane because the people who live there deserve it, after all they have been through with hurricane Katrina. Many lost close relatives such as parents, sisters, and brothers. People you never imagine of loosing.
**I also agree with Kyle S. P.3 who said:
I think kind of both. One, it should be rebuilt for the citizens who live there, because it is not fair to them. They couldn’t do anything about what happened. But, why should you build the city again when this same tragedy could happen again? There is really kind of no right or wrong answer to this question.**
The same tragedy can happen again!
But,… that is why you build things beter, stronger, things that can withstand bad weather.
I think the city of New Orleans should be rebuild, but with stronger protection and a better drainage system; even if it means the government should spend billions of dollars. Many people lived most of their life there – their hearts and souls are still within the rubbles of the city. It’s just not right, in my opinion, to tear people away from something that was apart of them; New Orleans was and forevermore in their blood.
I feel that new orleans should be rebuilt beacuse people want to be left where they where born. And there is history there for people. The goverment would be spending billions of dollors on placing the city somewhere else anyway.
I think that New Orleans should be rebuilt because it is one of the most cities in the United States. It is like a huge port which gaines most of America’s wealth.I think America should spend the money to rebuild it, after all, we are a rich nation. Also the protection and evacuation timing in case of a hurricane shuold be better.
I think that America should rebuild New Orleans because when the hurricane hit it took a couple of days before any help arrived. So i think that we owe it to the people who lost everything and i also think that they should rebuild it because it could be like a test to see if us americans can recover from such a tragic event.
I belive that New Orleans should be rebuit. New Orleans has tons of history under it’s belt. It has to do with everything we do today. As you have read they were going to New Orleans. Even though the book is fiction. It is base on real events. Think of all the famous people came from New Orleans. They should rebuild everything, and I belive the government should pay for it all.
I do think it should be rebulit because it is an important part of the U.S., yea,ok. They can say just move out, but I mean Mardi Gras will never be the same again. You can say, “just move”, but it will not be as easy as you think it will be for them because you are not in there ‘shoes’. Finally, hurricanes rarely occur there so, I would give it another chance.
I do believe that it is right to rebuild new orleans because of all the people that had lived there before and that lost there homes that would be like asking that same question if something like that happened around here….You would say yes because it affects people around here well its the same thing with the people in new orleans who only want there homes back.
I think that New Orleans should be rebuilt even if it costs the United States billions of dollars because its apart of the United States, saying it shouldn’t be built is like saying “hey forget about that state, its not worth our time!”, but what if california had a huge earth quake and we just decided “hey its not worth our time”, we decided to leave the state, and then arkansas got a huge tornado that demolished a city, again we would say “hey its not worth our time” and move out. Eventually we would run out of places to call home or even the United States. Just because there is danger in this world, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t rebuild. Take for instance the tsunami in Thailand, they didn’t just leave their country and hope the next one would be better. They rebuilt and became more aware of tragedy, preparing the a possible rerun.
I agree with the people whosaid that New Orleans should be rebuilt because it wasn’t the people who lived there’s fault that it got flooded. It is not fair for the govenment to just forget about it and have the citizens move else where. Suppose Ft. Laurderdale was to get flooded? Sarah, would you be okay if they said that al of us had to move and they would not rebuild here? I know that I would be pretty unhappy.
I feel that New Orleans should be rebuilt because it is one of America’s most beautiful cities. Government should spend billions of dollars to rebuild New Orleans because it would make people happier to know that their hometown is getting rebuilt. The citizens of New Orleans shouldn’t leave and go somewhere else because that was their home where they born and raised(atleast for some people), and they wouldn’t want to leave a place where they spent much of their life at.
In my opinion, I don’t think that they should rebuild New Orleans because now there is so much bacteria in the ground and everything. Yeah, it’s not fair to the people who lived there, but it isn’t safe for people to live there. I agree with Kyle, though. Something else could happen again and then they would have to keep rebuilding it time and time again. I know I would be upset if I was told that I had to move somewhere else, but I wouldn’t risk my health for a home. It’s not worth it. If they do rebuild it and families move into the homes with their children and everything, when the kids go outside to play, they will get the contaminated dirt all over them and they could get serious diseases. I just don’t think that they should risk the health and safety of these people.
In my opinion I think that theyshould build back the city of New Orleans. They should build it back because thousnads if not millions of people lost their homes in Hurricane Katrina. I know some people who came from there who are still struggling to get back on their feet from that natural disater. He is doing O.K. but he still has a problem with home and financial issues. If you build back the city more people will have homes to live in. It is their homes, you can’t just leave it like that, you wouldn’t want your home to be destroyrd and then somebody tell you you have to go somewhere elseto live. So I think they should rebuild New Orleans so more people can have their homes back, they really need it.
I think kind of both. One, it should be rebuilt for the citizens who live there, because it is not fair to them. They couldn’t do anything about what happened. But, why should you build the city again when this same tragedy could happen again? There is really kind of no right or wrong answer to this question.
In my opinion, I think that the government should spend billions of dollers and rebuild the city of New Orleans and protect it from future hurricanes. Many people lived in that city and i believe they should be able to live there once again. I agree with April and Ashlyn, even if they are not in period 1, on the government rebuilding New Orleans. I don’t care how long it takes them to rebuild the city, the people of New Orleans deserve to live in their own homes again. They sholud also build a better , uhh, what ever it was blocking the water. This is just my opinion. Not everyone as to agree with me or anyone else, everyone has their own opinion. I just can’t wait until I can see what other students think.
~Victoria~
I think that if they do rebuild new orleans it will never be the same as the real thing. Of course they would still have to have MARDI GRAS! I’m agreeing with April you can’t just tell the people to pick up and move some where else because its just not right, that was their home. If they do rebuild it i think they should build it some where, where the sea level is is not so below the sea level.
In my opinion, I feel that New Orleans should be rebuilt. The government shoud spend billions of dollars to rebuild the city of New Orleans and protect it from a future hurricane, I agree with April. It is not fair at all. After seeing all over the news, almost everyday the things they were going through, the floods, the people, everything just brought me down. I read articles, how rescue workers would be traveling in the flooded waters (in boats) and see dogs, caught in electrical wires, getting shocked, and how the rescue workers couldn’t do anything, stuff like that burns me inside, and makes me want to break down and cry (being an animal lover). People had to evacuate their homes, and stay on their roofs. Like April said, many memories stay in the heart of that city. Mardi Gras went on there all the time. People died in the city, people survived, but left back their loved ones. Would you want to be in a situation like that? Also what April said, Would you liked to be asked to leave and move somewhere else? What if you grew up in that city, new everything about, had so many great times there, and so many memories, would you just leave it all behind? Having no one living in New Orleans, is as if America has lost a part of it. These are just some reasons why New Orleans should be rebuilt. I have high opinion there will be so many other reasons coming from other students and people, that I just cant wait to see.
I feel that New Orleans should be rebuilt. The government should spend billions of dollars to rebuild New Orleans and protect it from a future hurricane because that’s where people lived their lives. I don’t think it’s fair to tell the people of New Orleans to move somewhere else. Some people have happy memories there. Some are wishing that New Orleans will be rebuild with more protection and if the government doesn’t go on with the construction, their hopes will be shattered. How would you like it if your city was destroyed and was told to move someplace else? I know I wouldn’t feel elated.
