Week 4 – Discussion Question #1 – How did it end?
This week you will finish the book. We have had multiple questions for each of the past weeks, but this week you have just one question on which to comment.
The Year of the Hangman is a novel in which the author has taken a historical event and given it an alternate ending. Now it is your turn.
This week your comment needs to be an alternate ending to The Year of the Hangman.
- Tell us how you would change the ending.
- Tell us what happens to the various characters.
- What happens to George Washington?
- What happens to Crieghton, Uncle Hugh, Sophie, Ben Franklin.
This is your chance to write an alternate ending, be creative and good luck.
Maybe the author will make a comment or two about your alternate endings.
If I were gonna write an ending to this book, i would kill Creighton. Im not a fan of Creighton. He acts dumb. Itwould go a little something like this.
instead of getting shot in the arm:
Boom!
“Ouch” screeches Creighton
“Crieghton are you okay?”asked Peter
“I cant breath, tell my mom I said”
“What Creighton.What”
“I love you” were Creighton’s last words
As Creighton and Arnold try to escape from the jail cell with Harry Brown, Peter comes and tells them to move out the way, that he is going to get them out. Peter gets a running start and runs as fast as he can to the wall and with his foot makes a foot big enough that a person can fit through. Creighton got ahold of this dad and with through the hole. Many soldiers went after them. They all started shooting at them. One of the soldiers shoot at Creighton and his dad, the bullet hit Harry Brown and he fell on the ground. Creighton rushed to him but was too late. Harry Brown fell and die that moment. Creighton and Peter wanted to stop and pick Harry Brown up but Arnold told them to continue, not to look back. All three of them made their way back to New Orleans. Their Creighton and Peter found their way to Dr.Franklin’s house where they found Sophie. They stayed with her for a coulpe of days but they went to fight in the war… Months past and Sophie didn’t hear anything that happened at the war. Couple days later Peter and Creighton retuned. At that momment Peter bend down on one knee and asked Sophie to marry him. Sophie in shocked said Yes. They got married four month after the war ended. Creighton was there to hear the “I Do”. They all lived in Franklin’s house printing up newspapers.
Sorry for posting so late. This is what I think would happen:
The story would end the same way with Creighton reading what Dr. Franklin wrote except that it was because that he gave permission for it to be published and not because he died. The following endings would take place several years later.
Instead of Dr. Franklin dying from the fire, he would have died from his old age several years later. Creighton and Sophie would still have lived in Dr. Franklin’s house except that they were married. George Washington would have gone on to become the nation’s first president. Creighton’s dad would still be living with them in Dr. Franklin’s house. Colonel Gower still would have died the same way he did.
Well the story lied this is how it really ended:
Creighton and Peter returned to New Orleans while Arnold stayed for battle. Peter and Creighton didn’t stay there though. They knew the guard ws lying about George Washington’s fate. He was 20 miles north of New Orleans. They found out from a very reliable source Mr. Franklin. Who did survive but would later die due to age while Creighton and Peter were gone. After they got Washington they sent him to the war where he commanded everyone with Arnold and won the war. Arnold did lose his leg but survived. Hugh didn’t make it out too well though. He was shot by Arnold as you know and passed away. Back in New Orleans Creighton’s dad got better thanks to Sophie. O yes Creighton and Sophie got to be real good friends by marraige. Peter was a little mad because he also had feelings but he met a new lady. They are doing well and everyone lived happily ever after…..THE END
“Father, is that you?” Creighton whispered softly not sure if the words were said loud enough to be heard.
“It’s not Washington then? Ah!” Arnold screamed well dissapointed. The guards were alarmed at his madness, they threatened to escort them back on their ship.
“What is this madness? Where’s Washington!?” Arnold insisted. The guard swiftly touched his pistol, and hesitantly replied, “What do you mean? He escaped of course! Long before you were here! As soon as he heard he was to be executed he found a way to escape. If the Governor sent you, I’m afraid he must’ve told you so. Is this a mockery? Are you all impostors? Lying to us?” his voice echoed againts the concrete walls of the prison cell.
Creighton grew scared, with a feeling of knowing what comes next.
The guard drew keys out of his pocket and slammed the door cell shut, “You will stay there until you rot. The Governor will hear about this and each of you will be hanged just like that Washington, a traitor himself.”
Days went by, all locked up, empty threats given by the guard day and night. Creighton eventually came back to his senses and acknowledged his father, whom was really alive. “You’re man’s made you a well put together lad” said Harry Brown to break the silence, Creighton shook his head but in the inside he knew it was not his mom who had made him that way. “I didn’t think I would ever see you again, and if the day ever came I didn’t expect it to be in a death cell” stuttered Creighton, “no not in a death cell”. Harry Brown put his arm around Creighton’s, “at least you know I’m fine and I’m alive, for what it’s worth.” Creighton couldn’t hold back the tears and neither could his father.
Arnold was going insane sauntering from wall to wall hoping for a plan or a sign of going somewhere. “Where is Peter? Probably roaming the colonies like a lunatic, I knew he was a good for nothing. He is worthless. We are worthless, we’re done there’s no way out of here.” Creighton raised from the floor, “prepare for the worst” Arnold stared at him blankly “What’s that nonsense you’re saying?” Creighton pulled a small knife from this jacket and handed it to Arnold. “I always knew you were smart boy.”
At night the guard came to check the cells when he stopped at their cell he spotted the knife and immediately opened the cell, however Arnold was to slow and the guard beat him to it.
An execution was filed that night for Arnold, Creighton, and Harry Brown. While they were all in dispair they knew that the U.S wasn’t going to change, that war would continue no matter what.
After they rescue Harry Brown on the way out of the cell the guard shoots Creighton twice in the back witch made it exremly hard for him to walk. So Peter carried Creighton and Harry Brown on his back. When they got on the hot air balloon they tryed to escape as fast as they could, later when they are about 6 miles they realize that there was a guard hanging onto the hot air balloon so they tryed everything to get him off but couldn’t. So when he got up with them the guard told them that he was here to help them, so they belive him. When they were just about home something went through the balloon then all broke loose everyone started panicing Peter,Creighton,Harry Brown, and the Guard. When they were falling Harry Brown was just about to tell Creighton something this is what he tryed saying “Y_o ha_e a b_oth_r”Before they all died. He said “You have a brother”
THE END
*I’m starting at the part where Creighton, Peter, Arnold and his dad are escaping from the prison.
The knocking on the door grew louder as Peter and Arnold dissapeared through the window.
“Wait for us you two!” Creighton called after them but the general and Peter had already left and started making there way towards freedom. It was clear to Creighton that if he wanted to save himself and his father, he would have to do it on his own.
He slowly hoisted his aching father onto his shoulders with the intent to carry him and found it surprisingly easy. With his lack of food, Harry Brown must have gotten lighter than 110 pounds, Creighton assumed. He lifted his father over his head and out the window until only his right foot was still visible, and then started to make his way through.
Before Creighton could get his head through the window though, the door to the room was knocked down and two guards entered the room. Creighton turned, expecting to see masculine looking men with pistols in hand, but instead, in front of him stood Michael Jackson.
“Hello Creighton,” Mr. Jackson said-well, more like sang, followed by a quick dance around the room. Creighton was surprised, to say the least. Michael Jackson wasn’t supposed to be born for atleast another 200 years; atleast that is what the neighborhood psycic had told him.
“How did you get here,” Creighton questioned. Mr. Jackson replied with another swift dance around the room (a moonwalk), and then replied in song “a timemachine.” “I’ve heard all about you in the future Creighton. You can say it’s a hobby of mine to research children but I know all about the trouble’s you are facing and I can help you. That’s why I’m here. For you Creighton.”
Though somewhat creepy, this stranger was intriguing to Creighton and so he got his father who was still lying on the other side of the window and followed Mr. Jackson into the future where Creighton changed his name to Danny Phantom and became a super hero (with his own show).
creighton opens the door with desprateness dragging each foot one after another weezing and coughing with a scratching so horrible every time he coughs a tear runs quietly down his cheek. the door knob turns
creighton takes one last breath. he colapses on the floor cold and stiff.
Creighton is dead. Running desrately Sophie goes to Creighton tears streaming down her cheek. Yelling and cursing franticly. THE END.lol sweet
Creighton and Peter slipped into the cell Washington was supposed to be in. “Helloo “. Peter stuck his head in. “Helloo”. BANG BANG “KABOOM” “UUUUUUHHHHHGGGGGG. IMA DEAD”
After rescuing Creightons father, Creighton Peter Arnold and Harry are running down to the ship trying to escape the gaurds. Sudddenly Peter trips dropping Creightons father and injuring his leg. He cant go on, he’s too hurt so they have to leave him behind. then they start thinking what will become of Peter and then it hits them in those few seconds of thinking how wll they get Harry out of there if he also can’t walk?! Creighton makes a move and picks up Harry and with all of his strength he carries his father to the ship following Arnold and setting sail. Now that it iscalmer they think that they have escaped the guards but then out of nowhere a cannonball hits their ship and they start to sink. Harry has no strength left so they all sink and die a terrible death being eaten alive by thousands of sharks.

——————————————————–
After Ben Franklin and Uncle Hugh passed away, Creighton,Harry Brown, peter, and arnold slovenly parted from the jail cell. Suddenly an angelic, turquois light highlighted the ground outlineing its rough edges. “The British.” Arnold yelled violently.
“No,” Creighton whispered. “It’s comming from the sky.”
His eyes stretched out like putty at the sight of a massive disk hovering over them. Slowly it shot out strands of light, dematerializing every bit of life it could locate.
“Run!” Arnold demanded.
They swiftly zipped through a cornicopia of trees. Behind them, each tree disappeared like dreams. They couldn’t outrun the death trap and prepared for a collision between life and bitter downfall.Instead a raven figure slid down from a metal platform, aligned in blinking lights. As it approached them, it seemed to be three figures instead of one. One seemed vaguely familiar. It was Washington. The two other figures lacked human characteristics. Their skin was pale and scaley as of a lizard.
“But, why.” Arnold stated bitterly, his voice quivering rapidly.
Washington glared at Arnold. “War is your addiction and shall be your downfall.”
Without warning, Arnold disappeared.Creighton could taste the sour feeling that was ingrained into his heart. The ship floated away through the stars. Creighton met Peter and his father in the bushes nearby.
“Another, life..gone.” Creighton sighed. “These things are just the gifts of war. The ones your aunt gives you for your birthday that you don’t want. The sad endings.”
As the sun was setting over the horizon, I could see a shadowy figure coming towards the boat. As it closer I noticed that the shadowy figure was really Arnold but he wasn’t alone there was another quite old looking fellow which Creighton didn’t really recognize. When Arnold got on board along with this fellow Peter jaw dropped and said could it be… no, no, no, it can’t be… but they look exactly the same. “What is it Peter?” Creighton said abrubtly. “It seems like General Washington; but it can’t be, he’s dead. ” On the contrer Mr. Peter it is me. You see the guards lied to you, I was locked up in this secret chamber inside the prison. Arnold here came to my rescue.” But how did you find out where he was Arnold.” Creighton said. I made a visit to the Colonel’s cabin and I found a document that said where exactly Washington was.
“Well if you guys don’t mind,” Washington said,” I would like to be heading home. When they got there the whole french and spanish army were anxiously waiting for them to get on of to war. Both Peter and Creighton wanted to go, and Washington allowed them to quench their thirst. And of they went.
A month or so passed and nobody had heard of anything. But then finally on the second month, fourteenth day, fifteenth hour, they received their first and finally sign. About one-hundred vessels could be seen just over the horizon. And as they got closer to the harbor you could hear the soldiers every where screaming with joy,”We’ve won, We’ve won, the war is finally over!”
Both Peter and Creighton lived through their first war along with Harry Brown. But unfortunately Arnold and Washingtonlost their lives, but their names and spirit will live on.
I’m sorry Mr. Moshe! I forgot they had no phone back then. It just occured to me when I pushed the submit bar. SORRY AGAIN!
Okay! Now I get it! Here it goes ( good thing I came back to the blog!)
Peter, Creighton, and Harry return from their long trip and go to Dr. Franklin’s house.
“Hey Sophie was up”
” Just trying to……. Oh my Gosh! Who is that? Peter watch your back, you might hurt it carrying that man.”
” This is Creighton’s Dad and No, I will not hurt my back carrying this man. He is light for a Brit, In my fighting times with Arnold I………”
” Nevermind that, just help me get him to the bed”
So Sophie took care of Mr. Harry Brown and left the prining shop up to the boys. They have been working around the clock trying to find out the results of the warand they found out that Arnold survived the war with no injuries. The only thing that happened was that the French double-crossed them and Arnold was blown to bits between the crossfire.
NEXT CHAPTER
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK!
” Wait! Don’t come in yet!”
” Okay, just wanted to know how my father was doing.”
“You can come in now.”
Creighton went inside the room and to his surprise Sophie was undressed whispering something into his ear that made him go into a trans like form and begin to take off his clothes.
“I just wanted to no if I needed to get any beverages from the sle house because…… WHOA! what are you two doing under there.”
“It is what you call, Not what you think?!”
“Creighton! How could you, you know that was my woman!”
“What’s going on in he….. what you doing boy! Get of that girl! What have I taught you about that! Wait til’ your married.”
It wasn’t my fault….. she …… I ….. it took a hold of me . I couldn’t control it!”
“Come here!”
Creighton got in trouble and had to work the printing shop all by himself for 5 months. He was sperated from Sophie for 8 months and Peter stopped talking to Creightonfor a long while.
Even though th affair that went on between Sophie and Creighton was in the air for a long time Sophie stopped liking him and started to court Peter.
Creighton’s father died on the Peter and Sophie’s second aniversery. Creighton was devistaed and tlked to no one for a while until he recieved a call that would change his life forever.
” Hello”
“Yeah”
“Who am I speaking with?”
“Sophie”
” Can I please speak to Creighton”
“Hold on a minute”
“Humm”
“Hello, is this Creighton?”
” Umhum”
” This is your Mother and I want you to come home for my Wedding! I’m getting married to someone named Arneld! I sent a private boat to come and gat you and will ba there shortly. So are you coming? Hello? Helllllllloooooooo? HELLLLLLLOOOOOO? Did he hang up the phone?
After all of the commotion and drama that took place, Creighton, along with Peter and Harry Brown all departed to their destination of New Orleans. They all decided to stay in New Orleans for good, and not return to Britain.
“Where’s Benedict Arnold Peter”, questioned Creighton.
“He left off to go further search for George Washington”, answered Peter.”He’s wants to send you his regards”, Creighton, “and wishes the best for you and your dad to wherever you both travel to.”
“Thank you Peter”, replied Creighton.
“You’re welcome”.
When they arrived at Dr.Franklin’s house, Creighton was surprised to find out that Benjamin Franklin was eagerly waiting at the door, and ready to greet them.
“Well it took you guys long enough, what was taking you so long? And I see that you we’re bored so you brought company along with you.”
“Yeah, when we found him in a prison cell, I couldn’t believe my eyes.He was a little sick at first, but then he healed”, remarked Creighton.
As for General Arnold he was never found after leaving Creighton and Peter. Rumor has it that he journeyed to some aloof country such as France or Spain. The controversy over what the fate of George Washington should be was decided and as a result he was publicly hung.
Sophie finally learned to speak proper English and got engaged to a French-born American, who later developed their very own printing company.
Benjamin Franklin lived to be eight-five years old, and was recognized as a capital citizen.
Creighton, who no longer had any connection with his mother, was satisfied with New Orleans and decided to stay there.
As I was reading the endings, I noticed that most people mentioned Sophie and Creighton together. I always imagined that Sophie would be with Peter, like Vlad said. Was there a part in the book that had shown a bond between Sophie and Creighton? Because I never noticed one.
Here is my post anywho.
Washington and Uncle Hugh would’ve had the same fate. Sad death. However, Franklin wouldn’t have died. They accidently burried him alive and the graveyard watcher dug him out. (Did you that did really existed? Not to him personally, but people were burried alive unknowingly, thinking they were dead.)
As days went by, Creighton’s dad healed wonderfully. He wrote a letter to Creighton’s mom, asking her to come live with them. Creighton worked in the printshop with Sophie, and Peter helped with anything that he could. One day Franklin came back and everyone was in shock.
“My dear god! I’m going to faint! How is -. What are -?” Sophie wide eyedly said.
Franklin told them the whole story and everyone was speechless.
More days went by and Creighton’s mom replied and said she couldn’t possibly leave Great Britain behind with all the memories there. So they visited each other , both ways, every so often.
Peter and Sophie formed a bond one day while Creighton and his dad were visiting his mom, and life continued in its ways.

*Epilouge*
After closing the door to his father’s chambers, Creighton walked over to his own chambers, lifted the netting around the bed and closed his eyes for a much needed nap. Hours later he awoke, although it wasn’t long enough for the sky to darken, Creighton knew about three hours had passed. He walked into the kitchen where he saw Sophie making two cups of tea and speaking to Peter. For some reason he felt a pang of jealousy reach his chest.
“Oh, Bonjour Creighton,”greeted Sophie who was the first to spot him.
“Hi Crieghton,” said Peter, after seeing Creighton, who just nodded in acknowledgement.
Sophie passed a cup of tea to Creighton. Was it just him or did her hair have more shine to it? Also, her hands seemed to have sotftened over night. She was more beautiful than ever and Creighton just couldn’t help it, he stared into his tea and blushed. Luckily, at that moment Sophie turned around to make another cup of tea. Peter had seen him blushed but thought he was sick.
“Creighton! Your turning red, are you okay?”asked a worried Peter. Sophie turned around just as Creighton’s blush disappeared.
“Peter! Creighton does not look sick!” she scolded and went about her business. While Peter just shrugged and muttered an excuse of having to leave for news that the first spanish sip is returning. Sophie gave him a brotherly kiss on the forehead which Creighton misinterrpreted to mean something else.
“You shouldn’t show your affection to Peter out in the open like that,” Creighton remarked with disgust to the exchange.
Sophie laughed and replied; “Peter is not the object of my affection!”
“Oh? Then who is?” asked Crieghton and the response caught him completely off guard.
“You”
I wouk ot write an ending to the book. I have no thoughts in mind of how to change the way it came out. Although i do have something in mind.
Epologue
In 1981 Benedict Arnold came back home. He we on and took Georges place and became president. Georges body remained unfound. Peter joined the army and recived 4 purple hearts and several bravery awards. His height provided several advantages for him. Peter also moved on several years later to become govenor. He was the bigest govenor ever recorded. Sophie went on and married Creighton and continued to work in printing shop. Creightons dad, Harry Brown remained in America with Creighton and also helped in the printing shop. Creighton took Franklins place in the pringting shop. He read all of Franklins books and completed his inventions. Creighton understood the meaning of war, life, loylaty, and yes, even humility.
Dialouge? Mine was missing that. Here’s my secound attempt:

Creighton replies, “No. Not anymore.”
*NEW CHAPTER”
After leaving the room his father lay in, Creighton heard a pounding on the door. Hastily, Creighton made his way to the font door and swiftly pulled it open. “Oh Peter, it’s just you. I thought it might of been-”
“General Arnold? Sorry, I’m no General Arnold, but I can give you some news on him. I was down at the docks and according to the sailors they last saw him at Pensacola. The say that he’s been captured by the Brits and they tend to keep him locked up until otherwise.” Peter said sympathetically.
Just then, Sofie came wondering up to see what the commotion was. Peter made his way into the house and sat down on stool.
“May I offer you some tea?” Sofie asked practicing her new quality of kindness.
“Yes, that would be wonderful.” Peter replied gratefully.
A few moments later, Harry Brown stepped into the room with Sofie following behind carrying Peter’s tea. Noticing Peter’s presence, Peter question “So Mr. Brown, how are you feeling?”
“Quite better actually, thanks to Sofie’s steadfast care.”
Suddenly, another pounding came at the door. This time, even more forceful than the past. Quick to his feet, Peter swung the door open. “General Arnold, you’re, you’re alive! I thought for sure they had you captured for good. And your leg, it’s, it’s still there”
“My leg, of course it’s still here. And captured, I’ve never been captured. Peter are you alright? Why are you talking this nonsense?”
“I went down to the docks and they told me you’ve been capture by the Brits, and before we were informed that you had lost your leg in battle!”
“Ah, I see, that was just a bunch of rumors to throw them off.”
By this time everyone had made their way to the door to greet him. However, he was not alone. From out behind Mr. Arnold, out walked another man. General Arnold proudly introduced him, ” And this my friends, is General Washington.”
Chrieghton and peters attempt to bust out Harry Borwn failed. His dad was captured and shot on there escape out.
“gosh darnit” Chreighton said weeping with dispair. Peter tried to cheer him up by telling him of how his father said “somtimes you have to lose to win”. wich made sense in a type of way to Chreighton. Peter and Chreighton headed back for New Orleans when suddenly it hit them they had nothing to loose. Chreighton said to Peter “lets forget all this and go start new lives”. “But we musent forget Sophia” said Peter. So they took one last journey to New Orleans and asked Sophia to join them in there search for new life. Not suprisingly Sophia declined “i must keep the shop and the paper going” she said. “I would love to join u to but it is just not an option for me i can barely keep the paper going anyways i wish you two would stay i could use the help”. Feeling guilt for Sophia Peter and Chreighton did one last favor for there freind and got her the help she needed. “Here are two of the finest workers in all New Orleans” said Creighton. “We wishe the best of luck and hope u leed a great life” Chreighton and Peter said. Sophia wishe the same for them. Then as fast as Chreighton came he left with Peter not knowing where to go or what to do they whent on looking for adventure and fun.
With Colonel Gower dead, Creighton returned to New Orleans with his father, Harry Brown. Creighton told his father all the things that had happened to him on his adventure – the death of Gower, the printing shop, Dr. Franklin, and more. Sophie agreed to let Creighton’s father and himself stay at Dr. Franklin’s house. While Harry Brown was resting in one of the rooms, Creighton sat on a chair and started to think what General Arnold was doing. After they left St. Marks, Arnold parted ways. Since rumor has it that General Washington was still alive somewhere Arnold went searching, hoping to him. Creighton never saw him ever since. Hearing footsteps, Creighton turned his head and saw Dr. Franklin limping towards him. Dr. Franklin survived the old burning print shop, but was left with a broken leg.
“Creighton! It’s nice to see you back again.” said Dr. Franklin.
“Hey. It’s nice to see you too. How’s your leg?” asked Creighton.
“It’s fine. Say, I heard you got shot in the leg. Is it bad?”
“Yeah, I got shot in my leg, but General Arnold helped me remove the bullet.”
Creighton rummaged through his pocket until he found what he was looking for – the bullet.
“This is a souvenir.” chuckled Creighton. “How’s the printing press going?”
“It’s going great. Sophie has been doing a real good job by herself.”
“By herself?” questioned Creighton.
“Oh, I forgot to tell you. I’ve retired from the printing shop. With my leg like this, I can’t get anything done. Would you happen to be interested in working with Sophie again? Your father can work too once he’s healed.”
“Of course I would like to work here again!” Creighton said happily. “I bet my father would love to work here too.”
“Good.” remarked Franklin. “Sophie has been working so hard. She could use a hand.”
“I’ll help her now. See you later, Dr. Franklin.”
With that said, Creighton sprinted to the printing press.
“Sophie!” Creighton yelled.
“Hello Creighton.” responded Sophie.
“Dr. Franklin said I could work here again. You look tired, Sophie. You should rest.” stated Creighton with concern.
“No, no. I’m fine.” Sophie replied with a little tiredness in her voice.
“I insist. Dr. Franklin says that you have been working nonstop. I will take care of the rest of the work.”
Sophie looked at Creighton with gratitude. “Thank you. I’m happy to hear that your father is alive. Welcome back.”
Sophie sauntered out of the room. Hours passed and Creighton finished his work. Creighton walked lazily to his room and plopped down on his bed, swatting some mosquitoes away. He laid his head on the fluffy pillow and closed his eyes, glad that he had returned.
Franklin died in the fire and Gower dies in the duel.
*New Chapters
Creighton knelt down on one knee besides the prisoner with one hand resting on the icy cold floor; his throat bulged as he tried to utter the word Father.
“Blast it! It’s not him!” Exclaimed General Arnold with his face engulfed in flames.
“Problem, sir?” the guard slyly spoke. His eyes bounced from Creighton and Arnold, as through he’s photocopying their images for further use.
“This isn’t Washington.” Arnold blustered, trying to keep his tone as calm as possible.
“He checked out about a week after he arrived, by the end of the rope. A fate you two will share soon enough.” The dwarf guard voiced as he slid the bars across the cell.
“Unless you two are who you say, of course.” He snickered as he sauntered off to the faint lighting at the end of the musky hall.
“F-father? I-Is this… really you?” Creighton whispered, acting as if they weren’t locked up in the tainted prison. The feeble man numbly remained motionless for a few moments, as that searching for the strength to speak.
“Father it’s your son, Creighton!” Wobbling his head as through it weigh a ton, Harry gradually raised his head to Creighton’s chin level.
“S-son?” He rasped- beads of sweat that glazed his jaded flesh were reveal to Creighton as their eyes locked just before Harry collapsed to his shoulder.
“Let him rest. We need to find a way out of here if he should survive.” Creighton drew his cloaked knife out.
“Prepare for anything, right? Will this do?” The general snatch the blade, poked the tip into his index finger, and grinned at the oozing trickle of blood dribbling down his palm.
“This will do. We‘ll act at dusk” The gleam of light piercing through the isolated, square window plane hastily waned as if time moved with the speed of light. Creighton and Arnold took turns scraping along the iron frame of the window while Harry slept, suffering constant chill and heat attacks.
“Stand back!” A shadowed, who stood behind the window, bellowed. As through the metal retains as if they were docile twigs, the figure ripped the frame apart from its hinges.
“Quick, come!”
Arnold and Creighton carried Harry on their shoulders (Arnold was in front) and heave him out of the window, with Peter’s help. They went down the same way Peter came, down the grappling hook’s rope and hid in the sheet of darkness just to arrive to
the boat unnoticed. They stopped at Pensacola to get medicine for Mr. Brown.
“Give him a pinch of this everyday.” General Arnold stated, handing a bag of bark to Creighton.
“I’ll stay here to rally up help for the attack.”
“But isn’t the atta-” inquired Creighton to the General’s decision.
“It been changed. The fleets will arrived in a few day and we need all the strength we could get since the British are heading to mobile.”
“Alright. Come on Creighton, lets go. The Sooner we get to New Orleans, the faster your father will recover.” With that said, Creighton and Peter sailed to New Orleans on the same route as they were on the Amity. They arrived at twilight to discover the print shop as good as new with Sophie bursting out of the door.
“Welcome back!” She stumbled back, as through she was trying to bite her tongue.
“ May my father stay here?”
“Oui, of course. You could put him in Dr. Franklin’s chambers.” With that, Peter placed Harry on his back, like he was light as a feather, as carried him to Franklin’s room.
“ I assume you need rest too, I already have your room ready.”
“I could stay? What about-”
“Luckily, I’m working on tolerance this week. “
“Thanks- I’ll finish up here; you could go to bed”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes, it’s at least I could do. But please tend to my father.”
“Oui, of course. Good night.” A grin leaped on Sophie’s face as turn towards the dwelling and walked out. Creighton leer at her as she left while preparing the type for the next print.
“A year anew, eh.”
Personally the ending was ok but it didn’t leave the reader thinking.
If i were to change the ending I would add about the relationship with creighton and sophie, also what him and his dad will do next. Also that creighton’s mother is writing letters to his uncle not knowing what is going on. And crieghton and his father recive them, then i would leave the reader thinking about if they are going back to england.
This is how I would change the ending:
Uncle Gower kills General Arnold in the duel, but Creighton still gets shot by Gower.
NEXT CHAPTER
Creighton and Uncle Gower rescue Harry Brown AND George Washington.
Then, it is time to take out the bullet.
“Perhaps, you’d like to perform the operation?,” asked Gower to Major Brown.
“Sure, I guess so,” Harry Brown replied.
Then, Gower gives Harry Brown the dagger and gives Creighton his hand to squeeze if it gets painful.
Surprisingly, Creighton only gives one big howl, and squezzes his uncle’s hand so hard, that he feels like he has the bullet in his hand!
“OWWWWWWWWW!! Creighton your are as strong as an ox!” Gower felt like his hand was numb.
Next, Creighton and Harry Brown are having a private conversation on the ship, away from Uncle Gower and George Washington.
“So, how would you feel if we took a little trip to visit mom, back home”, asked Creighton.
“Are you kidding me, oh no, I can’t imagine what your mother would do if she saw me, replied Harry Brown.
“Why not, it would be a pleasant surprise!”
“I’m sorry Creighton, but I can’t, you understand, right?
NO! As a matter of fact, I don’t understand! You were held prisoner for who knows how long, and when I offer you to live happily in your homeland, you refuse? You know, I knew it was too good to be true!”
Creighton walks off the boat at the dock, along with Uncle Gower and Washington, leaving Harry Brown and various crew members onboard.
“Goodbye, father, I guess you and I are two different people, with two different perspectives for life, and maybe we should live seperately,” Creighton said sadly.
With tears in his eyes, Harry Brown says “goodbye” and the ship slowly sails away from the dock.
“You should not have done that, I mean, he is your father after all,” Gower said as he walked into the town towards Franklin’s house.
“Yes, but you can clearly tell that Major Brown wants to live in America with Creigton, but Creighton wants to reunite the family in Britain,” replied Washington.
The three of them entered Franklin’s house to a startled Sophie.
“Bonte, who are you? Oh my gosh! Creighton you are bleeding!! Let me bring you a wet paper towel,” she said.
“Well, this is my uncle, Colonel Gower, and this is someone well known to everybody; meet George Washington,” Creighton said.
Sophie seemed suspicious, but went on to get the paper towel.
“Nice to meet you ma’am,” both said simultaneously.
Franklin came out of his room, startled, but excited that they were in his house.
Good evening General Washington, Colonel Gower,” said Franklin.
“Well, perhaps I should call it a night, I am sort of tired,” Creighton said.
Peter came out of the kitchen and greets everyone.
“Honey, why don’t we tell them the big surprise,” asked Peter to Sophie.
“Eh, bien! We’re going to get married tomorrow, and then we’re going to move to Canada.”
Creighton went to his room and quickly fell asleep.
Next morning, Creighton is on a boat, in the middle of the ocean, along with Harry Brown and Colonel Gower. Startled, Creighton starts yelling “Where are you taking me?”, but both men try to calm him down.
“Creighton, I thought about what you said and I guess you’re right,” said Harry Brown; “and why is Uncle Hugh here?, perhaps you might ask, because he is going to live with us; you, me, mom, and your Uncle.”
“But where’s Mr. Franklin and General Washington?” Creighton had so many questions to ask.
“Oh, they’ll be ok, Washington is about to be elected president, and Franklin, well, let’s just say he’s still working in the printing press.
Two weeks later, they arrive in Britain, and are about to knock on Creighton’s door.
“You ready? And you?” Creighton wanted to make sure that everyone was prepared what to say.
He knocks and his mother opens.
“Hi mom! It’s me and Uncle Hugh and Dad!!!”
She was about to faint.
With tears in her eyes, she hugged all three at once.
She couldn’t say anything because she was so speechless.
Mom, perhaps we could all live here, happily.
“Yes.” Her voice was crackling.
That night, they all played a game of hangman, and went on living their lives peacefully. Well, except for a couple of stories his Dad and Uncle Hugh told his mom about war.
Oh yeah! Uncle Hugh did apologize to Creighton for shooting him.
Creighton wlaks out of his fathers room and into the typing room where he finds Sophie.
“I did not expect that you would be up.” Creighton said to her.
“I was just finishing this last artical type.” Sophie replyed.
“Well…I can probably help you if you would like me to.”
“It’s not necessary, I am about done….but you can stay up with me.”
“Sure it’s not like I was actually going to sleep.”
Sophie shot Creighton a guilty look that caught his eye.
“I was just being humorous.” Creighton said.
“Oh, so I see you are better with that then humilite,” Sophie replied.
“I guess you are able to say that.”
Crieghton began to ruffle the type on the counter where Sophie was typing. He essitated at first but then finally said.
“I was thinking of Benjamin Franklin, You were really close to him right?”
“Si, he was like my father.”
“Do you miss him?”
“Si, but he always said that when he dies he does not want people to cry.”
“He was that type of person, a good man.”
“Manifico! Great! I’m finished.” Sohie said, as she grabbed of the type and handed it to Crieghton.
Creighton began to read it. It turned out not to be an article but a letter ….to him. Sophie told him that she loved him and that she wanted to send her life with him. Creighton looked up, and a smile appeared on Sophie’s face. She came closer and pecked him on the cheek with a kiss. He gave a slite blush… and that’s where their future began.
Their love that was hidden was revealed and they lived together along with Creighton’s father Harry Brown. Creighton wrote to his mother once in awhile. But after getting no reply, he just stopped.
Peter, Creighton, and his father got back to New Orleans.
“Sophie I am back” Crieghton said with joy, happy for being back to his new found home. Sophie came out of her room and for the rest of the afternoon they talked about their journey. The next day Crighton went to get some breakfest when he heard some american solidrs that camback talking about the attack on Pensicola.”excuse me but did you hear anything about general Arnold?” creighton asked. “Yes, he betrayed us he went to the British side ,and the y won that fight because of him.” ” So all he all that talk preparing was all a lie.” Then one of the americans said “but our soilders were able to rescue general Washington” the american solider said. “But , But i thought he was died” “No, he escaped to Cuba.” Two days later the british attacked New Orleans with the help of the new Lieutenant Govener Benidict Arnold. Creighton, sophi , ,and Crieghton’s father left to Canada ,but sadly Peter was caught and taken to mobile. After Creighton heard that he went with his father to rescue him. They were able to rescue Peter ,but creigton was shot and died. The rest of them lived their rest of thier lives in Canada happily.
Creigton replied, “No. Not anymore.”
NEW CHAPTER.
The days went by, and Harry Brown continued to heal-thanks to the exceptional help of Sophie. Creighton could not think of the words to explain how deeply he was in debt to her. With out her, his father probably wouldn’t still be alive. The realtion ship between Sophie and him as grown and they now enjoyed eachothers company. The stubborness in them both at times kept them from seeing eye to eye.
But never the less, things went on as usual. Creighton and Sophie worked in the print shop with steadfast speed, and every so often they Peter would drop by and he and Creighton would spend time together. One afternoon, while Creighton was in the print shop, Peter came bounding through the door. “General Arnold, he’s returned!”, Peter exclaimed with such joy it seemed akward for a man of his size. It reminded Creighton of when his father would return from war, and Creighton would anticipate his coming for weeks. And when his father finally did return Ceighton could not control the excitement that poured over him. Except in this case,Peter is ten times larger than creighton was when he was boy. But of his thoughts of Arnold’s return, Creighton was not surprised, he figured that the ol’ devil would find his way back one way or another- even with one leg. “How do you know?”, replied Creighton. But before Peter could reply Sophie, with an expression of irritation,
entered the room, “Excusez-moi!…what is going on? I just put your father to sommeil, sleep.” “Its General Arnold, he’s returned! I overheard some sailors at the tavern talking about it, he’s at the Governor house right this moment.” Peter’s voice filled the small room with such volume Sophie winced. “Incroyable! Incredible, oh I must make some tea at once.” Creighton turned to Peter, “Do you think he will stay?” Peter frowned,”If there si anything that I knoe about General Arnold, its that he’s stubborn. Not even a peg-leg will keep him from fighting. If not for our freedom, then for revenge.”
The time before the tea was ready was spen in silence, and a feeling of eagerness awaiting the arrival of General Arnold crept over Creighton with ease. But not only Creighton had this feeling of worry. Peter seemed to take to the news more strangley than Creighton. The expression on Peter’s brow looked like that of anxiety, and it made Creighton feel uneasy. Creighton was interested in hearing about Arnold’s travels, but could not escape the thought that Arnold might be bitter from his loss in battle. When the time came of Arnold’s arrival, the air was filled with tension. Arnold walked through the door more pride filled than ever. Creighton remembered an old saying back in Bristol, “Pride is needed more than ever once a man has fallen.” The sound of wood against wood, filled the room with every step Arnold took. His wooden leg seemed heavy, and Creighton’s heart filled with sympathy. Arnold looked at the solemn faces spread across the room, and with half cocked smile said, “General Washington is alive.”
Frankie, Theresa, Jeffrey – Now, that’s what I’m talking about. GREAT Work!!
As I said in a previous post, “Actually write it. . . You’re the author now. Don’t explain it…Actually write it. Use dialogue.”
Be descriptive, be emotional, be creative.
i didnt like the ending…. like “they all lived happily ever after” with the brand new printing shop and creighton and his dad. its too obvious… maybe it would have been more interesting to find out that creighton went to battle or something.. and died. that would have been cool.
“Dad is that-really you!”. “Yes Creighton it is me …your father” he said as his face grimaced into the back of the cell with a weak cough.
“Why are you here” as his voice got more deep and then creighton knew something was not right. “Can I ask you a question- father.”. “Yes.”. “what is your name.”
Umm-uhh, oh drat it seems I have been discovered he said as his face reappeared into the dull light.” “General Washington at your service!!!”
“So what Gower said was true” Creighton said chokingly to Arnold, “it seems that way dear boy.” “So is what happened to my father true.”
“Well your father is still alive…but I’m afraid he is now being held prisoner back in the colonies.” “No!!! we were to late its all my fault.”
“You cant say-.” “It was he said as tears began running down his face I was sent by my uncle to spy on you to help with the war and I was the one that freed him. It was all my doing.”
Arnolds face than began to turn a dark, evil shade of red “damn you”!!! as he pulled a pistol and shot maliciously all around the room he screamed “I will get you just like your father,” “but Washington said-” “we were trying to make you feel confident in his return home, but know… you’re DEAD!!!”
Then an wrathful bang and a choking smoke filled the room. Then the smoke turned into a luminous haze and the cell door was slightly ajar and Arnolds shadow loomed behind him.
Creighton crawled defenselessly to the huge, gaping hole in the wall. Peter had jumped in the way as creighton saw the bullet pierce his chest no!! Creighton loomed over him and said “I’m sorry.”
Then he ran to his escape. He knew Arnold would go first to the printing shop so creighton ran their to retrieve his belongings; as he had bolted through the door Sophie let out a screech of terror and she said “oh its you Creighton.”
“I don’t have a lot of time he exclaimed.” “Qu’est-ce qui ne va pas” (what is wrong)? He lunged over a small wooden table and gave her a farewell kiss. She stood, blushed and stay still. He ran for the door and closed it. He was about to make a run for it when he heard the voice of Arnold.
He screamed to the heavens “come out and take it like a true gentleman you coward.” Creighton had somewhat froze and had a flashback of this whole adventure even when he was just a young lad.
His eyes became fiery and fierce, he scrambled to the back of the house through a back door to his old bedroom and grabbed a pistol he had hidden for quite some time now. He then peered around the edge of the house and Arnold now had a slight grin.
“Just like your father didn’t know when he was out smarted and when to keep his mouth shut!!!” He then extended his arm forward and let out a fiery blow.
Creighton had ducked in time to shot his pistol just skimming Arnolds leg. He let out a scream that made creighton want to cover his ears but knew that would be the last thing he would do.
He then began to cry and choke as Arnold fell in fettle position clutching his leg, he then let out a shot thus ending Arnolds life. It seemed the whole town came out to see him coughing blood and lying till he said “you will pay Creighton” then….nothing.
Sophie had pushed her way through the crowd over to creighton. “I am coming with you” she said nonchalantly. Then the crow began to turn toward creighton and give him a some what not welcome glare. They began to chant at him and Sophie as they ran out of town.
2 years later Sophie and Creighton got engaged as Sophie and him went home and convinced his mom to live in the colonies.
His mom, still alive but shocked by the fact of her husbands death. Sophie was now learning how to become a true British lady and speaking more fluent English.
And what has happened to our dear Creighton, he became a national traitor and destroyed the Americans and took over.
He also changed his name to one that is familiar. Benedict Arnold.
Hey Mr. Moshe I changed the ending and added to the story if you don’t mind?
After leaving his father’s room, Creighton walks into the printing press and encounters Sophie.
“Oh, Sophie,” Creighton said, shocked, “What are you doing up this late?”
“Nothing,” Sophie replied, “I just have to finish the paper before dawn.”
“You shouldn’t be up this late,” Creighton said, “Let me finish up for you.”
“Really? You would do that for me?” Sophie asked.
“Of course,” Creighton said.
“Thanks you!!” Sophie said, wrapping her arms around his neck and kissing his cheek.
Neither of them moved for a couple of moments, until Harry Brown appeared in the doorway. Sophie broke away from Creighton and brushed past Mr. Brown blushing deep crimson.
“What was that all about?” Mr. Brown asked.
“What? Oh, that…….nothing……nothing at all,” Creighton mumbled.
“Oh, just admit it you like her,” Mr. Brown chuckled.
“Do not,” Creighton squeaked, blushing.
“Ok,” Mr. Brown said, still not convienced,” What are you doing out here anyway?”
“I’m just finishing up the paper for Sophie,” Creighton responded, putting finished papers on a table to dry.
“Ok,” Mr. Brown, “Just don’t take long.”
“I won’t,” Creighton said, “Goodnight, dad.”
“Goodnight, son,” Mr. Brown said, walking out of the printing press and going back into the house.
The next morning, Creighton woke up to a knock at his door. He slowly wiped the sleep from his eyes and let out a yawn.
“Come in,” Creighton said.
“Creighton!!!!” a voice yelled, opening the door.
“Peter!!!” Creighton yelled back.
“It’s good to see you, mate,” Peter said, hugging Creighton.
“Likewise,” Creighton said, returning the gesture.
“So, what do you want to do this morning?” Peter asked.
“Sleep,” Creighton said, falling back onto his pillow.
“Nope, none of that,” Peter said, pulling at his arm.
“Why not?” Creighton asked.
“Because we have to be helpful now that we’re home,” Peter told him.
“Helpful? To who?” Creighton asked, dumbfounded.
“To Miss Sophie of course,” Peter said.
“Oh yeah,” Creighton mumbled.
“Come on, we’ve already wasted enough daylight,” Peter said, walking back into the hallway.
“Ok, ok, I’m coming,” Creighton said, laughing slightly.
‘Now that we’re all back home and Peter is living with us,’ Creighton thought, ‘Sophie isn’t going to have to lift a finger.’
“Come on!” Peter yelled.
“I’m coming!” Creighton yelled back, pulling on his breeches and runnig after Peter.
“You ready to work?” Peter asked.
“Yeah, I am,” Creighton said, happily picking up a broom.
For the rest of the day, Peter and Creighton cleaned the house while Sophie, for the first time, relaxed and talked with Harry Brown. For the first time, Creighton didn’t whine or complain, he actually enjoyed living with Sophie and Peter. He might actually stay for a while.
I hope it isn’t too long.
As Creighton awakes from a long sleep, he recalls all of the things that took place. General Arnold stayed behind as he and Peter left to New Orleans with his ill father. Peter and Sophie got engaged a day later. Sophie took over the entire printing shop and even hired a helper. His father had gotten much better and could now work. He still had no idea of what happened to Washington. Whether he was hung or in jail, insane or in hiding. Creighton got up and dressed. He was to meet Peter in the Cafe to have lunch.
“Peter, how are you?” Creighton asked.
“Good, good. Listen, have you heard about General Arnold yet?”
Creighton stared at Peter with both interest and anxiety. “No, I have not heard of him. I have not heard of Washington either. Have you?”
There was a pause and Peter said “General Arnold died in Pensacola, fighting the British. He was hit by a cannon, blown to shredds I was told by Americans who came back. And Washington was actually in Pensacola. He fought hard, like he always did, and he also retreated, to the Spanish island of Cuba.”
They were enjoying there lunch when Sophie came bursting into the Cafe screaming to Creighton ” Washington is talking to your father Creighton!!!! They must know each other!!!! He’s alive!!!!”
Peter, Sophie, and Creighton left money at the table and ran to the house. When they arrived they saw the two men laughing together and drinking brandy.
Creighton’s father looked up at the opening door and exclamed “Ahhh, Creighton, just in time! I’d like to introduce you to a friend of mine. George, this is my son Creighton that I’m always talking about. Creighton, meet Mr. George Washington.”
“Your father has told me many good things about you.” said Washington as he held his hand out to Creighton to shake.
“Thank you very much General.”
“I’m not general anymore, Mr. Arnold is.”
“Arnold was killed in Pensacola. Defending his country was what he loved to do and he died fighting. We are now in dire need of a general. What do you say Mr. Washington?”
There was a long pause, filled with tension. Finally, Washington said “I don’t know if I should, I’m too old.”
“Rubbish!!!” ,yelled Harry Brown, “you know you’re up to it, what are you afraid of!?”
“Afraid, AFRAID!!!! No, not me, I was not afraid when I was taken prisoner by the Brits and I won’t be now. I will take the place of Mr. Arnold as General. But I need a place to live, here in New Orleans. But I’ll need a second in command, what do you say Harry?”
“I would be honored to serve our country at your side George.”
“Good then, have all of my soldiers come here and we will begin our training at once!”
“You can stay here, General.” said Creighton. He was pleased with his persuasion efforts. He would now finally be at peace with his father for commiting treason on Britain. They could now live in America with the people they truly love.
My story to what happens to the characters of The Year of The Hangman:
Unfortunately George Washington was hanged before Creigton and Arnold had reached the fort. Arnold had returned to New Orleans with both legs (apparently sailors did tend to exaggerate), althoug he was a bit unsteady and used a cane. Creighton and Sophie would at last get married! Peter had found himself a tall girl who was, like him, not quite bright. Major Brown had recovered thanks to Sophie’s tea, although he did nap quite often. And like Mr. Blackwood’s original story, Uncle Hugh Gower had died in a duel. Dr. Benjamin Franklin hadn’t died in the fire but had suffocated when they buried him alive.
That was what you were looking for right Mr. Moshe?
Do you want us to rewrite the whole last chapter in about 2 paragraphs or do you want us to summarize the end and explain how we would end it? Do you get me?
Oh, okay I get it
WELL, IN THIS NOVEL THERE IS ALOT I WOUULD CHANGE BECAUSE THE STORY DOES NOT COMPLETELY CAPTURE ME. I WOULD ADD ADDITIONAL CONFLICTS AND SPECIFICALLY I WOULD CHANGE THE END BECAUSE CREIGHTON DID NOT RETURN TO HIS MOM.
In the end I would of made Creighton and his father bond more. I thought that they didnt really show that they were happy to see each other. Dr. Franklin and uncle hugh would remain the same as they did in the book. Also Peter, Sophie, and Creighton would work together in the printing shop and live in Dr. Franklins house togther with Creightons dad.
i DONT UNDERSTAND….DO WE WRiTE A NEW ENDiNG OR JUST EXPLAiN WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE?
I would change the ending by letting George Washington live but be a servant. Benidict Arnold does not lose a leg. Like I said before I would let him live but he would be a servant. Creighton marries Sophie and they have two kids named Benjamin and Harry Brown( two boys). Uncle Hugh Gower still dies, but he tells Creighton were Harry Brown and George Washington is located. Benjamin Franklin lives and he still works at the printing press but loses a leg in the fire.
TO MR.MOSHE,
IM QUITE CONFUSED
…
MOSHE!!!!! im confused pleaseeeeeeeee explain! thankyou
Actually write it. . . You’re the author now. Don’t explain it…Actually write it. Use dialogue.
I would end the story by making everyone wonder where Washington really was and I would have made them win the battle. Crieghton would still grow in the ways he did and he and his father would send a ship for his mother. Peter would become much less lonely with Sophie, Crieghton, and Mr. Brown there to keep him company and try to understand him better. Dr. Franklin’s fate would probably still the same except I would’ve made him die a more peaceful death like of old age in his bed asleep and Sophie is the one to discover him.
If I composed the ending of the story, it would have to be that Creighton took 100% control over the printing press, and would always remain in America. Franklin’s death would likely stay the same. Sophie would learn how to speak very accurate English. I think and hope I understood what you were asking for, Mr. Moshe.
In the story, I would end it with no one knowing where Washington disapeared to. Sophie would live and take over the printing press. Ben Franklin would retire from printing. Uncle Hugh would die the same way and Creighton would get shot inte arm not leg.
Umm… I don’t understand this either.
Yeah, I don’t understand what we have to post either.
Mr. Moshe,
Do you want us to explain how our story would end or actualy write it. I mean do you want us to say “I would not have had Ben Franklin die in a fire but instead in battle” or do you want us to say “and as tha last of the smoke went up, Creighton continued to run east to where Peter was, for he knew that with his father and mother dead, Peter was his last hope of surviving.” Do you understand my question?
