Here’s DISCUSSION QUESTION #2:
Discuss the nature of Sherlock Holmes’ friendship with Dr. Watson. How highly does Holmes value Watson’s opinion? Why is Watson important to Holmes? Why is Holmes important to Watson? Supporting your answer with details from the text.
The way Holmes values Dr.Waston’s friendship is he thinks of him as a friend, but Waston thinks of Holmes as a parter more than a friend. (Holmes value’s).Holmes said ” but you are a conductor of light ” . Meaning Wastons brings out something that other people don’t see in there selfs. (Waton’s vaules). “I was proud, too, to think that I had so far mastered his system as to apply it in a way which earned his approval”. Meaning Waston wants to be approvaled by Dr.Holmes. Waston is important to Holmes because Waston still needs to learn from Holmes and correct him from him from time to time. Remember the walking stick, Waston was asking if he got the story right. Holmes said “to that extent”. Waston said “but that was all”. Holmes said” No, no, my dear Waston, not all-by no means, all”. Holmes is important to Waston because he’s the only one that can understand him. Waston knows what Holmes is looking for in a case. For example, when Holmes needed to know who was following Dr.Mortimer, Waston got the taxis number, saw the man was in a black beard.
I agree with Jessica K. because Waston and Holmes feed of each other. Without them agreeing with each other they would not know how to solve the promblems by them selves.
The nature of Sherlock Holmes’ and Dr. Watson is very important, and valuable. They both respect eachother and their opinions.
Holmes highly values Watsons’ opinion because in some cases Watson can see little details that Holmes can’t. For example in Chapter one “It may be that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light.” Which means he may not be smart himself, but he brings the genius out of other people.
Holmes is important to Watson too, because without Holmes he would never get the correct solution to the Baskerville’s case or any other case. For example, Dr.Watson made a educated guess about the letter sent to one of the family members of the Baskervilles, but to his demise Holmes revealed that his answer was incorrect and provided him with the correct answer as he always does. I also think Holmes is important to Waston ,because Waston thinks of Holmes as the leader in partner ship. Like in Chapter one he says “He had never said as much before, and I must admit that his words gave me keen pleasure, for I had often been piqued by his
indifference to my admiration and to the attempts which I had
made to give publicity to his methods. I was proud, too, to
think that I had so far mastered his system as to apply it in a way which earned his approval.” Meaning that Watson felt glad that Holmes noticed the fact that Watson Was using his techinques.
I agree with Janille L. on what she said about; whatever Watsons either gives Holmes an idea or helps with the case, and when Holmes is to busy he also becomes an excellent resource.
I agree with Nicole B. because i do have the same opinion about Dr.watson, and Holmes.I also think that Holmes dose usually needs a second opinoion from what Dr.Watson says before making a final assumption. Also that they both need each other to come up with they’re final assumption.
The nature of Sherlocks Holmes’ friendship with Dr.Watson is that they both need each other. For example Dr.Watson needs Holmes’ to tell him if his investigations are right or not, nd Holmes get his information or a little help from Dr.Watson.Holmes highly values Dr.Watsons opinion because he takes a little information from Holmes’ mistikes and opinions. For example Holmes’ asks Dr.Watson what he thinks about a situation and then corrects or agrees with it. Watson is important to Holmes’ because he give Holemes’ information and he does about everything Holmes’tells him to.Holmes’ is important to Watson because he helps out Watson and tells him if he is wrong or if he is right about somthing.
i disagree with brett b anwer because i belive that holmes does value watson opinion even though he my not completely say it . Because he depneds on watson impit in the situation
Dr.Watson and Holmes really have this natural sort of friendship thing going on. There is a friendship between them because watson depends and holmes and holmes depends on watson. They each have a diffrent part of the mystery. Holmes depends on watson because they truly are partners. For instance in chapter 5 holmes says If my friend would undertake it there is no man who is better
worth having at your side when you are in a tight place. No one
can say so more confidently than I.” which clearly states that holmes trust watson and thinks of him as a equall. Watson depends on holmes because in the first chapter watson could identfy that the stick belong to a family physican and so fourth but is was holmes who uncoverd the whole picture. Also holmes vaules watson opinion because he depends on watson little bits and piece to solve the whole promblem.
I entirely agree with Paige G. and Michael B. . They both make very important points-“benefits from one anothers opinion”-“although Holmes can see the trees, he can’t see the whole forest”.
Mr. Holmes and Dr. Watson appear to work very well with each other. They share each other’s thoughts and speak kindly to one another. Mr. Holmes does value Dr. Watson’s opinion. Holmes doesent necessarily think of Watson as ‘brillant’ ,like as Holmes said “you may not be luminous yourself, but a conductor of light.” Holmes also trusts Watson because he reccomended him to accompany Baskerville.
Basically, they work great together, they build off each others knowledge and both admire each other.
The nature of Sherlock Holmes friendship with Dr. Watson is a very good and trustworthy one. They have been together for a while.Holmes highly values Watson’s opinon because he can get new and useful information from him.Even though most of his opinons are wrong they are still useful to Watson. For example when they where talking about the walking stick Holmes was listening to Watson even though he was incorrect.Because of Watson’s wrong opions Holmes was able to find the correct the conclusion.Watson is important to Holmes because Watson helps Holmes think at his best or makes him think more. For example when Holmes said “It may be you are not yourself luminous but a conductor of light”(ch.1pg 13).Which means because Watson was wrong it helped Homles solve their problem.Holmes is important to Watson because since Watson usually is wrong Holmes helps figure out the soultion to their problem.
I agree with Michael B.’s answer because he stated the facts of the answer also with relating opinions. He also gave specific details from the text which relate and support his answer. His answer is also like mine but in different words and opinions.
When you post something and it does not show up, it may be pulled for one reason or another. This does not mean it is deleted. It is most probably in “moderation”. That means it is waiting for me to approve it.
Do not despair.

Keep the discussion going!
You’re all doing great.
Mr. Holmes and Dr. Watson have been solving cases with each other for a long time. In doing so they have developed a close friendship. Mr. Holmes highly values Watson’s opinion because there are details that Waston can see that Mr. Holmes can not. Watson is important to Mr. Holmes because he has a different view of people and their surroundings.
An example of that is Mr. Holmes even said “You yourself are not luminous, but a conductor of light. You have a power of stimulating it.” Meaning that Watson has a special gift to see through people. Mr. Holmes is important to Watson because also Mr. Holmes has a gift. Another example from the text is the “Times” newspaper.
Mr.Holmes knew that the cut out letters from the letter addressing Sir Henry Baskerville, was from the “Times” newspaper. Mr. Holmes just knew just by looking what magazine the cut out letters were from. Dr. Watson and Mr. Holmes are a team. They need each other to solve a case, like a car would need gasoline.
I agree with Dayna B. and Jennifer P. because Dr. Watson and Mr. Holmes point out things about a case that the other might miss.
Sherlock Holmes’ friendship with Dr. watson is very valuable because they are mostly together all the time. For example, in chapter one when Holmes says “Let me hear you reconstruct the man by an examination of it” to Watson. Which means Watson needs to tell him some more details and iformatin, and that way Holmes can put everything together and fugure it out.
Holmes values Waston’s opinion very highy because everytime Holmes asks Waston to explain something to him he says things like good, excellent, and perfectly sound.Which shows that Holmes appreciates the things Watson says.
Watson is important to Holmes because Watson gives Holmes another point of view from someone different. Remember in chapter one Holmes says “I confess, my dear fellow, that I am very much in your debt.”
Holmes is important to Watson because in chapter one Watson says “I must admit that his words
gave me keen pleasure, for I had often been piqued by his indifference to my admiration and to the attempts which I had made to give publicity to his methods.” Which means without Holmes Waston wouldn’t be as noticed as he is right now. Watson and Holmes both depend on each other for support and more information on clues they get.
I agree with Paige G. because she stated that Watson and Holmes beifit on their friendship, and that is true because the both depend on each other. Also Mr. Holmes needs another opinion to get more information and benifit.
I think that Holmes and Watson have a special relationship. They have been solving mysteries and thay have become close friends on the way. I think that Holmes values Watsons opinion very much. Holmes is usually interested about what other people think. Like when they were talking about the stick. Holmes asked “what do you make of it?” After Watson applied his answer Holmes came up with the right answer. Watson brings out Holmes inner genious.
Watson is important to Holmes because Holmes can’t solve a crime without him. Holmes may see the whole picture, but Watson points out the details. Also Holmes says “I shall be very glad to have you back safe and sound in Baker
Street once more.” He was talking to watson so that means he wants Him to be safe.
Holmes is important to Watson because when he explains something wrong Holmes points it out. If Holmes didnt do that then he would usually get false statements.
I agree with Nagma A. because she says that they are close and Watson helps Holmes, but Holmes also helps Watson.
I agree with Trishala P. on wat she said about how Holmes is like a teacher to Watson. And also how Holmes teaches (tells and/or shows) where he gets his right answer from and who he gets his right answers from.
I believe that Holmes values Watson’s opinion very highly because when he said that Watson’s light isnt as luminous as he makes others appear to be, which is ment obviously ment to be a sinical compliment but still a compliment none-the-less which is rare for Holmes to give. Watson is important to Holmes, i believe, is because whatever watson says either gives Holmes an idea or helps with the case, and when Holmes is to busy he also becomes an excellent resource. Same goes vise-versa with why Holmes is important to Watson.
I agree with Halle R. because she states that Watson and Holmes are very close friends and that they both appreciate the other. She also states that Holmes gets his answers from Watson’s wrong answers.
Dr.Watson and Mr.Holmes are not just partners, but also very good friends. Holmes values Watson’s opinions becuase Watson’s answers are usually wrong. Even though Watson’s answers are usually wrong, they are still useful to Holmes. For example, when Holmes and Watson were looking at the walking stick, Holmes was listening to Wtason even though his answer was incorrect. Becuase Watson answered wrong, Holmes found the right answer.
Holmes values Watson because Holmes thinks that Wtaon is the one who stimulates the genius in him. For example, Holmes said that “It may not be that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light. Some people without possessing genius have a remarkable power of stimulating it.” (ch.1 pg3) That means that even though Watson’s answer was wrong, Holmes understood it better, and then found the answer to their problem. Watson values Holmes because Holmes is like a teacher to Watson. Holmes teaches where he gets his right answer from and how he gets his right answers.
I agree with Halle R. In her answer she stated that Holmes always listens to Watson’s opinions, even though sometimes they are wrong. I think that same thing. Holmes always understands Watson, and then corrects him.
Holmes and Watson are very close to one another. They are both partners. Holmes is the detective, and Watson is basically like his side kick. But Holmes does not treat Watson like most people treat their side kicks. Holmes treats Watson more like a best friend, or a brother.
Homles does value Watson’s opinions. Holmes always asks Watson questions, and asks him what he thinks, before he proceeds with the mystery.
Watson is important to Holmes because he helps Holmes alot. Watson always provides Holmes with a second opinion. In the first chapter Holmes tells Watson “It may be that you are not yourself luminous, but
you are a conductor of light. Some people without possessing genius have a power of stimulating it.” That basically means that Watson helps Holmes decide on his own opinion.
Holmes is important to Watson because Holmes technochly guides Watson to find an answer. Holmes also tells Watson what he does wrong and how to make things correct. For example, i remember that Watson had a different opinon about the walking cane then Holmes did. And Holmes clearly corrected Watson by telling him Dr.Mortimer owned it.
i agree with michael b. because watson’s dosent’ really see the big picture sometimes. so he needs holems to make sure he doesn’t miss the important, not so tiny details.
i do think that holmes values him because he basically gave watson a complement.. in sherlock holmes language on pg 3 . watson is definitly important to holems because he keeps track of almost everything going on. he’s like a human tracker and with out watson, holems would not have any help in solving this crime. and even though holems is a super genius… he is still human.
I think that Holmes thinks highly of Dr. Watson because Holmes usually needs a second opinion before coming up with an assumption.
A perfect example:
“Well, Watson, what do you make of it?” -Holmes. Back in the first chapter when they found the stick.
Holmes values Watson highly because he’s always eager to hear his thoughts so he can apply it with his answer. Obviously, Watson is important to Holmes because he needs another point of view.
Holmes is important to Watson because he feels as though him and Holmes are a team and he has the duty of sharing his ideas with Holmes. “Do none suggest themselves? You know my methods. Apply them!” -Holmes. “You know my methods,” suggest that they’ve been friends long enough to know eachother very well.
I agree with Shauna because I also think that they have a great friendship and they depend upon eachother.
Sherlock Holmes friendship with Dr. Watson is something that is really important in the book. Why it’s very important is because both of their careers help each other out. Sherlock Homes is a detective and Dr. Watson helps him discover his cases. So in a way they solve the situatuions together. How highly Holmes values Watson’s opinon is extremely high. Holmes benefits from Watson because if Watson thinks about something Holmes adds something more to the problem and they figure it out together. So since Holmes is a detective Watson acts like an assistant to him and Holmes gets a better perspective. Watson is important to Holmes because he helps solve investigations. He also helps because of his ideas toward things. Holmes is important to Watson because his ideas are on a higher level and it adds more to Watsons opinion. Holmes is smart, one of the best in England, and opiniated. So this is very important.
I agree with Lauren H. because like she puts it “they both need to hear each others thoughts.” When they do this they solve mysteries better, faster, and they get a wonderful outcome.
Holmes obviouly values Watson a lot because he said “It may be that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light. Some people without possessing genius have a remarkable power of stimulating it. I confess, my dear fellow, that I am very much in your debt.” (ch. 1 pg. 3)This means that although Watson isn’t all that bright he helps Holmes see the little details that he misses. This is why Watson is important to Holmes. Holmes is important to Watson because although Watson can see the trees, he can’t see the whole forest. Without Holmes, Watson can’t solve a mystery. Since they seem friendly toward each other I’d say that they are good friends.
i agree with Lauren because Holmes and Watson need each other’s opion’s tosolve cases and to basically get through life.
Gerardo, I appreciate that you want your classmates to be clear in how they express themselves. Please feel free to point out what does not make sense. Quote the post you are referring to, and use your classmates names.
Let me put it to you this way. If I have something very important I have to tell you, and I try to tell you, but you do not understand what I’m saying, wouldn’t you want me to rephrase it?
You would have to look at me, and ask me to rephrase the part you didn’t understand.
On the internet we can not look directly at each other, so we have to use each other’s names.
Please use your classmates names, address each other with respect,a nd you will be appreciated.
This internet open discussion thing is new to a lot of you, so take it slow, be kind, gentle and specific with your comments.
You are all doing so well.
Keep it up!!
I agree with Lauren because I do see how Holmes and Watson are companions and also how they are both a good match of friends because how they both are into the detective stuff.
I think that Holmes values his relationship with Watson because of all the things that Watson helps with the detective stuff and how he’s a good assistant he is to Holmes. I think that Watson is important to Holmes because Watson is like his sidekick (from my point of view), also that he probably gets him or helps out of situations that he can’t get out of by himself. Now I think that Holmes is as important to Watson as Watson is as important to Holmes because I think Watson probably loves being a detective and probably wants to be as good as Holmes, so he is looking up to Holmes sorta like a role model.
I agree with Gyan’s whole expination. Plus Holmes and Watson need each other or else they might not have solved as much mysteryies or became as famous.
Sherlock Holmes’ relationship with Dr.Watson is that Watson is Holmes’ assistint. Also Watson and Holmes are pals. Holmes values Watson’s opinion ,but not fully because in the beginnig of the novel Holmes gives Watson a commplement he said that Watson is not the smartest but he makes people smarter. Watson is important to Holmes as Holmes is important to Watson because Watson points out what he thinks and helps Holmes figure out leads and Holmes always help watson out.
Paige, I agree with you because both, Watson and Holmes, benifit from eachothers company. They both help eachotherout and give one and other each of their personal thoughts on the case.
Holmes and Watson’s friendship is very important, they both deal with the whole detective career and they both think differently. Almost like oppsites atract. Holmes values Watson opinions because they both need to hear eachothers thoughts. Holmes aslo suggests to hear Watson’s opinions before proceeding. Watson is important to Holmes because he is a second opinion to the investigation.Watson is also a companion to Holmes meaning that he helps him along the way. Holmes is important to Watson because he is the 2nd best detective in England and why wouldnt he be a big help to Watson.
i agree with Gyan because i think Watson helps give Holmes new ideas, and that Watson and Holmes have grown acostom to each others company. And i think that Holmes wouldn’t ever replace Watson because of the experiences they hav together.
–Reread your answers because some of you are mispelling some words and your answers dont make sense.
I agree with all the comments above because they all say that Watson and Holmes enjoy being with each other and like the adventures they go on.
Holmes values Watson’s opinions alot because Holmes can get new ideas or learn something new from Watson. Watson is especially important to Holmes because he is going to help Holmes by staying with Sir Henry Baskerville at Baskerville Hall to try and help figure out what is going on. Holmes is important to Watson because Holmes guides Watson and tells him when he is wrong and when he is right. For example in Ch. 1, Holmes tells Watson “I am afraid, my dear Watson, that most of your conclusions were erroneous”. Because Holmes figured out that Dr. Mortimer is a “country practitioner” and that he “walks a good deal” just by looking at his walking stick. I agree with Shauna-Kaye on all her reasons because I believe Watson does enjoy Holmes’ company very much and that Watson is important to Holmes also because he helps him realize all the things he looked over and missed.
Response to Shauna-Kaye S.
I agree with you Shauna because I also think that Dr. Watson and Mr. Holmes have a very good friendship and that they both appreciate the other.
Dr.Watson’ s and Holmes friendship is described as a friendship. Holmes values Watson’s opinions because even Watson’s opinions are wrong, they are still useful to Holmes . For example, when they were discussing about the walking stick, Holmes was still listening to Watson even though he was incorrect. Because of the incorrect statements, Holmes found the right answer.
Watson is important to Holmes because he thinks Watson is the one who motivates his genius in him. For example, when Holmes said “it may be that you are not yourself luminous but you are a conducter of light” (ch1 pg.13) which means Watson’s wrong answer helped Holmes understand the answer to their problem.
Holmes is important to Watson because Watsonis wrong most of the times. So Holmes can get the right answer through his wrong answer.
I argee with Shauna because i also think that holmes and watson’s relationship is very good. I think that Watson enjoys going on Holmes adventures with him. And I also think that they have known each other for a very long time.
The nature between Mr.Holmes and Dr.Watson is a good one. Since they have been friends and have known each other very long I think they are really good companions. Watson is important to Holmes because since they’ve been good friends so long and known each other that Holmes wants everything that Watson has to say before he says anything .Also Watson is his assistant so Watson knows the things that Holmes knows so Holmes needs to hear his part.I think Watson values Holmes because since they’ve known they have become attached and Watson loves going on and solving cases with Holmes. He also knows things about Holmes that other people don’t know.
The nature of Mr. Holmes and Dr.Watson’s relationship is a good one. They both appreciate each other. i think Holmes values Watson’s opion very highly becuse he asks him alot of questions about clues before he voices his own opinion. I Watson is important to Holmes because he helps him to realize the little things in their cases. Holmes said”You know my methods apply them”, that shows that they have known each other very long and Holmes wants Watson there to help him. I think Holmes is important to Watson because it seems like Watson spends alot of time with Holmes because he enjoys his company. Holmes allows Watson to go on adventures so that they can solve a case and Wayson enjoys adventure.
I agree Gerardo because, with long periods of working together Mr.Holmes and Dr.watson friendship had been growing. Mr.Watson can benfit from the ideas from Mr. Holmes in the quote ” Do none suggest themselves? You know my methods apply them”. Mr.watson and Mr.holmes have become the best of friends. One benifits from the other.
Mr Holmes friendship with Dr.watson is valuable because Mr.holmees and Dr.watson value off one anothers opinion to finish the final thought. “Do none suggest themselves? You know my methods apply them”. As Holmes values advice from watson, Watson values advice from Holmes. Holmes values watson thoughts of a friend or another view . ” I confess, dear watson, that I am in your debt”. Tells that Mr Holmes benfits from another opinion.Watson is important to Holmes because Holmes needs a sidekick and another view from someone else than his own.”well,Watson, what do you make of it?” Holmes gets opinions from watson and Holmes gives information to watson to give it body. Holmes and Watson both benfit from their friendship.
The nature of Holmes and Watsons friendship is that they have been working together for long periods of time and they have become best friends. Holmes values Watson’s opinion very much because Holmes needs another opinion that supports what he may be saying or that helps him realize something. Holmes values Watson’s opinion because in chapter 5 he said “If my friend would undertake it there is no man who is betterworth having at your side when you are in a tight place. No one can say so more confidently than I.” whichs proves Holmes attraction to Watson.Watson is important to Holmes because he helps him realize things that sometimes he doesn’t see or understand. Holmes is important to Watson because without Holmes,Watson would only be by himself trying to figure out things that Holmes understands, like the newspaper writing that Holmes figure out it was fom the ‘Times’ or even have a mystery to narrate. So they both need each other because by working as a team they do their job easier.
well,The nature of Sherlock Holmes’ friendship with Dr. Watson because he is the ciy doctor and Shelock has had Watson pay quite a bit of visits, creating a steady friendship. Holmes values Watson’s opinions by taking it into consideration and eventually comes up with a conclusion to whatever they’e trying to figure out and gives him the credit. Watson is important to Holmes because without him, Sherlock won’t have a sidekick to help him out. Holmes is important to Watson because without him, he woudln’t have a good and close friend as he is.

I agree with Jonathan because that they value each others opinions but I do disagree that Watson is a witness. He is there to help Holmes with his investigations and he isnt a witness.
the nature of Mr. Holmes to Dr. Mortimer is detective to client. Mr.Holmes values Mr.Watsons opinion fairly high. Watson is important to Holmes because Watson is basically a witness .Holmes is important to Watson because Holmes is a rather smart fellow when together they figure most things out.
HEY EVERYONE (Yes, I’m shouting, but not in anger, in Joy :)) . . .
Make note of this entry I wrote to Kryssa C. (Period 2) Please read her posts in the Period 2 DIscussion (4th from the top), and then read my post here. Enjoy!!

Kryssa, your answers are brilliant and well thought out. I have two suggestions for you:
(1) Use fewer words.
(2) Include your citations within the text of your answers
Take a look below at what I have done with (part of) your answer. Compare your answer with my version.
Here’s my version:
Watson is important to Holmes because Holmes needs a companion such as Watson, and another point of view for certain things. As Holmes remarked, “I confess, my dear fellow, that I am very much in your debt” (C-1, P-13). Holmes expresses two things through this statement: (1) he needs Watson around for things he doesn’t see himself, and (2) he is thankful for every bit of information Watson gives him.
All I did was simplify your exact idea. I have not changed your answer. I only used fewer words.
Great work, Kryssa!! Keep it up!

After reading Period 5, I have other suggestions:
* Limit the amount of quoted text you use in your answer. Most of the answer should be in your own words – only quoting essential portions of the book/text.
* The name is “Holmes” not “Homes” homes. aight!
Enjoy!!
I think Holmes values Watson’s opinion alot because Holmes isnt perfect and that he might be wrong about something and Watson can say something about that and correct him. Watson is very important to Holmes since Holmes may need some help with certain cases like the Hound. And pretty much the same answer with Holmes and Watson but Holmes may not need as much help but with tracking come people down he will be useful. For example with the taxi and the number of it, Watson can help trackin him down and find them.
