Life Under Adolf Hitler Discussion 6
We watched the video Life Under Adolf Hitler, which if you have your Discovery Education sign in information, you can go watch again. You took some notes and talked a bit about it in class.
Here is Discussion Question 6 – Nazi Party PROPAGANDA
- How did the Nazi Party use propaganda to sway the masses to support their policies? What were the goals of the propaganda campaign?
- Here is teh BEST resource I could find – State of Deception: The Power of Nazi Propaganda (USHMM online exhibition).
- Here is a Podcast by David Pilgrim, curator of the Jim Crow museum, as he speaks about propaganda.
The Nazis used propaganda to help them gain supporters and allies, so they could rule the world and make the perfect race. Hitler used it to gain dictartorship. He also used propaganda to basically ‘take over’ peoples minds, and put in the idea that people such as Jewish people and others need to be ‘demolished’. BTW: he thought the pefect race was light hair and blue eyes.
I think the Nazis had pretty scary propaganda to threaten jews. Posters were hung around everywhere, especially in Europe. Most jews went into hiding, and i can imagine that these posters scared them, and everyone around. these posters consist of a message to the veiwer, and these messages were probably scary. Some jsut had a picture on them, conveying a message, like “join the Nazis” or “Death to Jews” or somthing similar.
Germany was not good under hitler’s rein, under the surface. On the surface, everybody was in love with the things Hitler was doing. He was to change what he was doing, then he might get thrown out of office. So he played it off and pretend he was good with everybody in germany.
The Nazi’s were socialists, whish means they wanted total control but still making the people equal to each other. The way they used propaganda to make the citizens of Germay think that Hitler was “like a god” was becasue he had a dream of making an arian race. Hitler convinced people to think that jewish people need to be killed by having the dream of having a strong and pure race of people.
Hitler used proproganda to pursuade the citizen’s and even people in the Nazi Party to one, take over and think that he was really someone, different from others . He used the swastika to symbolize a flag but in this case a sign. It oringinally didn’t spin on it’s axle , it came from the Eastern part of the world , but most cultures use it .
Hitler used propaganda to get into office, and then he used propaganda everywhere. Propaganda stated Jews were bad, Nazis and socialism were good, and that Hitler was working to create a perfect race.
Interesting point about Nazi “socialism”. Read this for a deeper look at this perspective.

He published books and put up posters saying all saying to join the nazi’s
Hitler used prpaganda to sway the people of Germany to think that the jews were bad. He did this so he would have people on his side to support him. I think that Hitler did this so that he could have more people against the jews and so he would have more help trying to exterminate them.
Well Nazi Germany used propaganda by, referring to what “Ryan” said dictatorship. The Nazi party censored things forced society to agree with what they wanted and created this mindset that they were above all and could not be opposed.
Propaganda is used to sway someone to do something or to go with something. Adolf Hitler did that exact thing. He promised citizens all of the great things they wanted and if they would follow him under his rule, he would do it.
“Nazi propagandists drew upon the successful techniques and strategies used by the Allies, Socialists, Communists, and Italian Fascists to advance their political campaigns, win public support, and to wage war. Once in power, the Nazis eliminated the ‘marketplace of ideas’ through terror and media manipulation and mobilized propaganda as a weapon to unite the German people around a ‘leader’ and to facilitate aggression, mass murder, and genocide.” (SOURCE????)
I agree with what Kalvin M said. The NAZI party used propaganda to sway masses to support their policies by creating youth groups that let the young kids that being a NAZI is a good thing, and a good cause, and since at the time everyone was depressed they were happier they saw a “good” change. They just didn’t really realize what the change was, and they were not questioning it.
You said, “They just didn’t really realize what the change was, and they were not questioning it.”
They definitely were not questioning it. That much is true. Don’t forget that questioning it, or going against what the Nazi’s were planning, or putting into effect meant death in most cases.
But I will not subscribe to the idea that they didn’t realize what the change was. The German people voted Nazi politicians into congressional seats (the Reichstag was the German version of Congress – like ours) . Hindenburg had a hard time filling the Chancelor position until on January 30th 1933 he appointed Hitler to be Chancelor. Hitler never actually won an election, but his Nazi party was in a strong position in the Reichstag. The German people knew who they were placing in the offices of the Reichstag. They knew what they stood for. That Nazi presence of power pressured Hindenburg to appoint Hitler to be Chancelor. Once Chancelor, Hitler began stripping the rights of the German people supposedly for the greater good with the Jewish population already established as the scapegoat. They knew what was coming. They set it up to play out that way.
I think Hitler used propaganda to make everyone feel like they were the same kinda like in the book Fahrenheit 451, were everyone thought the same thing and Hitler also burned books just like in Fahrenheit 451. But if you were Jewish you belived in diffrent things and Hitler didnt want that.
Knowing that Hitler could be classified as an “insane” man, he used propaganda to hide all negative aspects of the Holocaust. Who would want their country to know that one person was single-handedly devised and was carrying out a plan to kill off a whole religion? By using techniques such as billboards, advertisements, bandwagons and many other types of propaganda, one man can deceive a whole country. Hitler gave the people role models to look up to, such as those who fit the Arian race. His method of deception was successful in keeping the Germans ignorant.
During the depression many people were emotionally broken and Hitler found all of their weaknesses. He used their weakness for his own good by promising them a better life. Who wouldnt want a better life? Propaganda also persuaded many people to view his side. To see the fantasy life he was promising. Hitler used jewish people as a excuse for everything that went wrong. He used the weakness of the people to sway them to the Natzi party.
I think that Hitler used propaganda with the Nazis and all that stuff so he can have a lot of people by their side maybe different things will persuade many people to follow him no matter what. They did different things to make like this goal to came true. And I agree with Sydney.
The Nazi’s used propaganda in several types ways. But the main man behind it all was Joeseph Goebbels. He was a popragandist in Nazi germany.Like other popragandist he would have the type of things that were allowed in for advertisement the are good for the Nazi party.
I wonder why he had such hatred towards Jewish people and why he wanted so much power. I think nobody wanted to befriend him in his child hood, there was a loss in his family that hit him hard, or he just simply doesn’t know how to treat people. What if somebody treated him the way he treated other poeple? I bet he would change his attitude or he would be dead.
The Nazi party used propaganda to sway the people to supporting thier policies by creating youth campains and getting anyone they could to get Hitler into full power. It worked because of the depression that Germany was in. The people belived that Hitler and the Nazi party could get the out of it. This turned to a dictatorship and soon the slaughter of many Jews. The propaganda was used to scare the population into electing him in.
With the intent to eradicate the Jewish population, Hitler had to have people on his side. He couldn’t just blatantly state he would congregate all of the Jewish into camps and then slaughter them. They used massive amounts of propaganda to sway kids, adults, elderly, people from other countries, cats, dogs, even some people that were against it at first. Anybody they could recruit, they would. The entire Hitler Youth Group was a way to get kids to do some of their dirty work for them. That wasn’t it, they made the concentration camps look like camps for fun, and made people the Jewish were actually agreeing with the entire thing. If all this could happen so easily for something horrible like genocide, then how easy would it be for TV shows and radio stations to do it for something like stealing now? Influence is powerful.
Hitler used propaganda so that everyone could be unified, so that everyone could be the same. If you were a Jew then you believed in different things which isn’t unified because you have a different culture which didn’t seem right in his eyes. He also used propaganda so he could rule the country and be favored. He wanted to seem like a good leader so wanted everyone would like him.
The Nazis had this crazy idea of turning Germany’s symbol sideways and it was mostly found inside a circle. Their way of thinking was that they would try to control everything and everybody. That is what the symbol is symbolising. Hitler’s and the Nazis’ goals were to eliminate all Jewish people because he just felt like they shouldn’t exist, but they are people just like them only with different religious beliefs. I just think that Hitler was wrong for doing that. He had persuaded many people into thinking that Jewish people were the bad guys, but the truth of the matter is that he was just fearful of being overthrown, so this was his way of taking action.
They used propaganda so that Hitler can take over office which obviously worked but then turned into a Dictatiorship. But they also (in my opinion) secretly took out other oppenents, though there isn’t any physical evidence that the Nazi party was the reason for the deaths of Hitler’s oppenents i can assume that it was Hitler knowing the man that he is. (I cant remeber if i picked this question too do but i thought it was interesting so i chose too do it). (:
Books represented culture and they were burned because they required creativity and individuality. All negative aspects were hidden from the German people because Hiltler didn’t want them to try and remove him from power or think things were going bad with the economy or life. The German symbol was turned sideways. It was often put inside of a circle and it represented Nazis spreading their way of living.
