REBEL – Novel Discussion Round 1 – Chapters 1-8
What is the purpose of Minor Characters ?
All minor characters in a work of fiction are written into the story in order to illustrate some aspect of the main character. Some charcters help us to see internal traits. In the book Rebel, Amanda Jane Keeling, AKA Rebel is the main character.
Many times students just take their notes and write them into sentences to describe the minor characters – DO NOT DO THAT.
The assignment is for you to share how each of these characters affect who Rebel is, not to tell about the minor characters.
Remember, the purpose of all minor characters IN ANY STORY is to shed light on the major/main one.
Take notes about each character as you read the story. Please make sure the notes are only to help the you remember who the characters are and how they effect Rebel. You are not to use them to share the affects or at least not directly.
Does the character: (a) make her think?; (b) make her do something she wouldn’t normally do?; (c) make her angry?; (d) create problems?; (e) scare her or make her uncomfortable?; (f) encourage him?; (g) anything I haven’t listed here, etc.?
1. Gram
2. Viola
3. Moses
4. Pookie
5. Tiger
6. Mr. & Mrs. Dolzycki
On a separate sheet of paper, explain how the minor characters affect Rebel’s thoughts and actions. Then post your answers to the Blog.
You must address each of the characters listed. Please post separately for each character listed.
i think Gram encourages rebel to do the stuff she does to make her a rebel. In the book, Gram was once a rebel when she was younger. Now rebel turned out just like her. Gram doesnt care much in what rebel does since she was one to.
Rebel is disgusted with Tiger because he dose his business outside. And Moses is not gonna pick it up, so she had to and now she is disgusted about picking it up.
HeY, aMaNdA s. wHaT’s Up? It’S mE nIkKi!
POOKIE:
Rebel likes Pookie, because he is a purebred dog and is not like the other dogs, because he listens 2 every body espically Gram who loves him the most.
TIGER:
Rebel really doesn’t know Tiger that much, because she just met him a couple of days ago, but i think she thinks he’s a big baby, but very sweet.
VILOA:
Rebel doesn’t really know Viola but people say she’s just like her Grandma or Gram for buying that old-run-down house.
GRAM:
Gram sometimes gets annoied by, Rebel because sometimes she doesn’t want 2 do what Gram wants 2 do & Rebel gets annoied when she has 2 take care of Pookie.
Well…..1 person that affects how Rebel acts is gram….like gram lets her eat doughnuts, which her mom wouldnt ler her do nd i think rebel knos that she can get away with more stuff stayin with gram than if her mom was around…And about that moses kid…i think rebel likes him, thats how he affects her because she wants to impress him..so i think they will end up going out later on in the story..also I THINK that Tiger (the big thing,,) annoys her sometimes because hes always barking..and she always has to drag him…so..yea.
well pookie is rebels little discusting dog thats leaves presents in the house !!!
Moses is rebels tall boy THATS A FRIEND but i think rebel likes him alittle more than just that !!
Gram makes her happy by giving her some more freedom, and only frusturates Rebel when she doesnt agree wchich is seldom. She let’s Rebel have more freedom which leads to her doing things that she might not normally do.
I DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT VIOLA !!!
I think gram gets annoyed of rebel because shes alittle to rough and should start acting like a young lady!!
Pookie makes Rebel frustrated sometimes. Since she is in charge of Pookie’s “messes”, she gets mad at him for doing his business inside of the house instead of outside.
Moses makes Rebel happy but angry at the same time. He makes her happy because he is the only guy that she knows that isn’t shorter than her. He makes her angry with all of his videotaping instead of helping with his dog while they were walking.
I think Moses has a postive and negative effect on Rebel he annoyes her by videotaping EVERYTHING.but makes her happy becuz of his height and kindness
Gram affects Rebel by letting her do things that she normally wouldn’t do. Rebel’s mother doesn’t let anyone in the house eat sweets but when Gram comes over the place is packed. Ok maybe not packed but there are a couple of boxs of sweets on the table.
Mr. and Mrs. Dolzykis are Nice and caring to Rebel. She also gives them sweets. She also asks Mrs. Dolzykis how she met her husband.
Viola at this moment dosent have a huge effect on Rebel. She is just the owner of Tiger.
Pookie made her angry because he kept tangling her with the leach. He also aggravates her when he pooped on the lawn.
Moses As a good an a bad effect on Rebel. She likes him because he is taller than she is and most of the boys she meet are shorter than her. Then bad effect is that he thinks about himself like the time when Rebel had to clean up the poop all by here self.
Gram lets rebel do anything that she wants to do. For example rebel can eat sweets but she cant because her family are health nuts.
Moses:
Rebel feels annoyed with Moses because when a man came and ran into them. He just started video tapping. Also he let Rebel hold both dog leashes and couldn’t eat the food they got. Also he makes her kind of feel uncomfortable because it seems Rebel likes Moses. And she wants to be with him in the future like he is the perfect match because he’s taller than her and she always talking about what kind of husband she wants in the future.
The minor character gram is very encouraging towards rebel. She is always on her side because she was just like when she was young. The minor character pookie in other words the family dog gives the story a little more excitement. But at the same time it helps give the story a more homey touch.
Mr. and Mrs Dolzykis let rebel do things she wouldnt normally do by her to eat the pastries and pies. She wouldnt normally do that beacuse her mother usually only allows her to eat healthy foods.
Tiger gets rebel mad in a way because when he *needs to do his buissnes* outside, moses doesnt pick up tigers waste. So the person who has to clean it up is rebel and she does not enjoy doing that
Viola is one of the characters that makes rebel thinks by the way she gives a brief discription about moses, by describing his personality
Pookie makes rebel upset at times. One example of this is when Pookie tangled hers and tigers leashes together. It aggrivated rebel as she tried to un-tangle it
I think that moses makes rebel mad at times.I think this because while rebel was holding onto both of the leashes, moses was just there videotaping the scene and making a joke out of it
well for gram i think that she makes rebel think,do something she wouldnt normally do. I think this because gram is always telling her things to do that make her think. And for the things she wouldn’t normally do, she for example convinces her to be away from her mother for a while, while her mother and her father are in a caravan. Rebel does not spend much time away from her mother.
Mr. & Mrs. Dolzycki- Rebel sees the couple as very kind and caring, considering that she noticed that they give away their merchandise. When Rebel visited again, she received sweets and asked Mrs. Dolzycki about how she met her husband, which gained Rebel’s interest.
An example of their caring and kind side is when Rebel asked if Tiger and Moses were okay.
They are also very laid-back people who aren’t really big on confrontation. When that kid stole something from their store, they just dismissed it because it was so small. I’m sure other store owners would have called the cops.
Tiger- Rebel was very surprised when she first saw Tiger. Probably being used to Pookie’s small structure, Rebel didn’t expect such a huge dog.
Hmm… what to say about Tiger? Well, Rebel MUST care at least a LITTLE about Tiger, considering that Rebel actually when to go look for Tiger when he got out of the house. In the book I’m at the first page of chapter 6, and she had just found him under a big branch or something of the sort. Rebel seemed naturally worried, so Tiger made her more emotional than usual.
Pookie- As the book wears on, Pookie proves to be a very small problem… but it might be for a good thing. Pookie was barking at something while Rebel and Moses were walking in the street, but at the point that I’m at, I don’t know WHAT Pookie was barking at, and Pookie was barking that stormy night. Rebel, I think, just sees Pookie as a dog (of course, because Pookie IS one) and nothing really else.
Moses- Moses gave Rebel the little love bug bite without meaning to. Rebel thinks of Moses as an ideal suitor for her, or a comparison of one. Being that she doesn’t usually see/ hang around people who are taller than her, it seems to me that she’s in a small shock.
Rebel sees that Moses has a good head on his shoulders, and as I read the book, she compliments him in her mind and makes her think about her future and who she wants to live the rest of her life with. She started asking questions to different people about their experiences.
Gram allows Rebel to do things her parents don’t allow her to do. She also makes her mad. For example she let her eat donuts and her parents normally wouldn’t. She makes her mad because Gram was the one who wanted a dog, but she made Rebel walk the dog.
Viola- Rebel said earlier in the book that she wasn’t too fond of Viola. Quote from the book: “Having met Viola a time or two, and finding her a bit eccentric, Rebel wasn’t exactly too thrilled atthe expectations of the grandson.” The only reason why Viola would stick up in my mind is because of Moses, and Rebel compared her with the mystery grandson.
I’m on chapter 6, but I might have to go back into the book to check a few things on some characters when I go to class next.
Gram- Rebel seems to like her enthusiasm, and gets rather happy when she’s near Gram. Rebel seems to really like sweets, mostly because she doesn’t usually get them. Whenever Gram brings things in, Rebel goes straight for whatever she brought. I also noticed that Rebel isn’t as controversial as her family towards Gram. Rebel didn’t come up with some excuse for her not to help Gram. Well, Rebel didn’t like the idea of the musical festival part of their trip, but she went with Gram anyway.
Hey all,
JayP asked an important question… In the blog I state that you have to address all the characters listed. . .You do not have to do them all tonight, though. You can come back to this Blog each time you have to.
For instance, I could easily do an entry for Gram right away if I have read about 30 or so pages into the book. It may take a little more reading, say to pages 50+ or so before I could talk about the Mr. & Mrs. Dolzycki. Even though Rebel meets them in an early chapter, they do not really have an effect on her, or show us anyhting about her, until later.
I can come back here any time I read something that shows me something about Rebel….and I should come back to this blog each time I have to.
Do we have to do more than one character
What you doing here danielle its your bot Jayp the trackstar
Viola doesn’t really have an impact on Rebel as much as the other characters
Tiger scares her alitte bit because the dog is humongo.
GRam Lets her do work all the time and makes her comfortable. She always trys to help her to do things.
Mr.& Mrs.Dolzycki make Rebel think of what she would her marrige to be.They make her want to be like them when she grows up, sort of.
Gram lets Rebel do things her mother wouldn’t usually allow her to do like, eat donuts and pastries.
Tiger kind of frightened her but, she became use to him and used him as a reasorce in the detection.
Pookie gives her another obligation besides anything else.
Pookie just entertain Rebel by being cute.
Moses makes her feel like she needs to be more intelligant. He makes her feel not uncomfortable persay, but a little uneasy somtimes. He encourages her to try to be a better peson.
Mr. & Mrs. Dolzycki told Rebel that they fell in love with each oher at first sight, which made Rebel think.
Tiger scare Rebel or make her uncomfortable because of his size.
Moses makes Rebel think about who her mate in life may be. Rebel is delighted to met someone who is taller than her.
Viola makes Rebel think about who Mosses is and how he looks like, based on her height and personality.
