Article of the Week – The Oz Diet (Time Magazine)
Let’s talk about what we eat. Let’s be honest about what we know and what we don’t. Thank Danielle for the article this week.
You will need to print this one, mark it up to show evidence of a close read, and turn that in. Then post to the discussion. You do not have to write out your reflection. Your post to the discussion is your personal reaction/reflection/opinion/etc.
Here’s the article. Happy reading, AND thinking – The Oz Diet.
Though obesity is a huge problem in the United States, I do not believe it is their fault. Kids usually have the biggest problem with maintaining weight as they encounter temptations of the common world, but is it really their fault?
We people in America have to accept that there are some food-loving folks out here in this world. They make their selves happy by eating, so let them eat. Why should one have to go on a diet? Especially kids. With the pressure of others to fit in, they believe in starving their selves or making their selves sick to be “in”. Just live life. And try to stay healthy while doing if not, don’t worry about it.
Why should people need to go on a diet? All of these fat foods are making kids more and more obese, along with video games, television, it’s making people distracted from going outside and being active. If you just lower the technology use, and go play outside with your friends, you won’t have to worry about being fat. What everyone is saying is true, we’re young, no need for us to be fat, and as we continue to get older, we should be more fit as we get older. I’m not saying that you have to become EXTREMELY skinny, but just not so fat that you can’t even run a lap around the track. Bottom line, as everyone is saying, eat right and stay healthy, you’ll feel like a million bucks in your older years.
No one is perfect, we all have flaws. So if you don’t want people pointing out your’s don’t point out theirs. When it comes to obesity and things like that, it is in fact a problem. But not for someone our age. Like Emily was saying, “we are all unique”. So stop comparing your weight to others and feel good to be the person you are. When we were little we didn’t care how we looked, what we wore, what we said, it didn’t matter. But now as we get older we see the real truth, that to most people what’s on the outside matters. Why don’t we go back to when we were naiive, and forget about our weight and our looks?
I agree with Jenna. She is right, people our age shouldn’t be going on crazy diets, but we should watch what we eat and how much we eat, and also we should all get exercise to make sure we stay healthy. Also, we shouldn’t care if we aren’t stick skinny and other people shouldn’t go pointing out what shape or size someone is. If you can’t find anything better to do then you obviously shouldn’t be pointing out other people’s flaws. No ones perfect.
Nutrition is not simple. I think to be a fit person you have to worry about your diet more than exercise. i think we “teens” should worry about our diet since it could turn into a bad habit I know it takes a lot of effort to change those habits. I think when you eat, what you eat, and how much you eat has to do with the amount of calories you burn.
I absolutley agree with what everyone is saying, the bottom line is: eat right and stay active. Honestly, that’s all there is to it. Don’t feel guilty because you eat something deemed “unhealthy”, life is too short to worry about this kind of stuff. Isn’t that what last weeks discussions were about? Living is enjoying yourself, and if you aren’t because you are worried about diets then STOP dieting! Eat what you want, and enjoy every bit of it. Excercising can be just as fun too, if you choose to make it that way. So live a healthy life, but live a fun one as well.
I would like to add-on to what Mickey and Kishan said.
I do not believe in diets. I don’t believe in diets, because some people just think if they eat a salad and a banana they’ll be fine.. but no. If you really wanna get in shape you have to eat right and excercise.
It’s easy.. just eat and go outside and run for like atleast 10 minutes. People sometimes ask me how I got so fit, and honestly its just by going outside and running. I don’t even watch what I eat, because I know i’ll just run it of later.
Diets? F[orget] them Mr.Moshe! There can be so many out there but then you’ll just gain all the weight back , when you start going back to your old ways. The only REAL diet, is exercising and eating right. The fact is, that the food around us and the foods we put in our mouths is the reasons why the obesity rate just keeps on going up each year! ” Want something good to eat , cheap and not good for you? Go to a fast food place. And since McDonalds is just around the corner, heck! Lets go everyday! ” The poorly choices you make will come back in bite you in the butt! Then you have a low self of steem and then want to go on a diet. And they will try all of these diets , like the ” Dr.Oz Diet ” , and so many more, but do those really help? I mean, they could be proven , but we know for a fact that exercising and eating right really does work! I feel like diets are overrated and that there is really only one diet. And when people go on there diets, and really want to see a difference, actually work hard for it! Is frustrates me how some people want to see the results and not do anything. Like commercials saying that taking these pills will make you lose weight! Like no! Do it the right way or don’t to it at all! ” Exercise is the key to happiness . ” Plus , it also releases stress so , what the heck! Go for a run!
I agree with Jenna. Everyone thinks that (especially in middle school) in order to be popular, you have to be super skinny and super pretty. Not everyone was meant to be the same. Thats why everyone is unique. Extreme dieting can hurt your heatlh, especially if you are already EXTREMELY skinny. You have to maintain a healthy weight and eat the right foods. Dieting doesnt have to be hard, just eat the right foods. You should excercise as well. Obesity has become a major problem in the United States because of our abundance of food. We should try to be aware of the seriousness of obesity and take a stand against it!
Food is to obesity as guns are to death
food:obesity :: guns:death
Eating a lot of food leads to obesity.
Having a lot of guns leads to death.
Its easy to go to a resteraunt or McDonalds and order a Big Mac (even though they are nasty). People often want to feed into the desire they have for food as everyone said. They don’t think of the long term effects of what those foods may do. When they see what happens they regret eating those nasty “burgers” or they will continue to feed that desire for food. I can honestly say that American’s are the fattest people I’ve ever seen. We should follow after other countries and learn to eat healthy.
Can I get a SUPER SIZE ME?
Diets are a large part of culture now, especially if you read a lot of magazines, but they aren’t something to stress over. You don’t need to fit into a straw to be pretty, or acceptable. But there are people that really need it for their health, and some people just want to feel better.
The thing is, you don’t lose all of your weight after you go a week of dieting. It is a lengthy process that needs to be done right, or you’ll be unhealthy. I think the health part of dieting is what is being overlooked, not by Dr. Oz, but by regular people. People want results, and what better results are there than blatantly obvious differences in appearance? People don’t realize what they are doing to themselves. Your body needs certain things, and fancy grass isn’t going to provide those things. There will never be a such thing as a miracle fruit, or a perfect vegetable, remember how too much of a good thing is bad.
Before I get carpal tunnel I’m going to summarize what I am saying. Dieting isn’t magical, time is the key. With a month or two, and a balanced diet, you could look as good as you want.
A little off topic, but I have to agree with Mickey that it is silly that people believe McDonalds makes you fat. It’s like saying guns kill people. Gun’s don’t kill people.
People kill guns.
Uhh, people.
I like how you put your thoughts together here, Angel.Food doesn’t make people fat, people do.
Food is to obesity as guns are to ______________ .
I was born in a third-world country and know how hard it is to find food that is beneficial to your health(because there isn’t much healthy food available). In fact I went there to visit about a two months ago and seeing the starvation that affected the nation(I visited) it shocked me to think how in the US we don’t worry about scarcity of food. But knowing that there is somebody out there wishing they could have as much food as we have has made me think otherwise. People there don’t care about how they look but about what they eat and what their next meal will be. Comparing conditions in the US to conditions in other countries there’s a major difference. Many countries don’t like the US for the very reason that they think Americans get spoiled by everything the government has to offer(food being one of those things). Consider this we residents of the US shouldn’t worry about how the food affects how our body looks(we don’t need to take diets too loose weight) all we need to do is make sure we’re eating healthy and that the food we eat won’t have a negative effect on our health, since we do have many healthy food choices available to us. Don’t you think we should appreciate what we have available to us, consider that beyond the borders of this great country many people wish to live here by what is has to offer. Hunger is a problem worldwide which is why the term World Hunger is now in use throughout the world. Obesity may be a problem in America but in many parts of the world its the total opposite(malnutrition).
Obviously obesity is a problem, mostly in the United States. Elsewhere it is the exact opposite, they don’t have enough food, but regardless, Americans are stereotypical fat slobs. I don’t mean to offend anyone, but the image of the average American is a lazy overweight person. Why is this so? We as Americans have an abundance of food at every corner, may it be a fast food place, restaurant, or a grocery store. This is one of the main reasons that obesity is such a big problem. The average ignorant American buys to satisfy the desires and eats their heart out… literally. Ignorance is once again the cause of a severe problem, as evident in Fahrenheit 451, the “Kony 2012” campaign, and many other worldwide problems. People just don’t know how to eat right! The natural human instinct is to take what you desire. That is what America is doing and we are suffering because of it. By knowing what to eat and how to eat correctly, we can stop the high rates in obesity.
When I read this article it made me think about my mom and how she’s on a diet and trying to lose weight. She is always exercising and taking jogs, but the one thing she doesn’t like to do is eat right. But eating healthy things such as fruits, vegetables, grains and lean meats can help lose weight. Obesity is a huge problem in america, and americans need to be more careful about eating certain foods. Me personally, I eat a ton and I love McDonald’s but i’m not obese, but i still need to watch what I eat and eat healthy. Eating the right things can help you live longer and stay stronger. Be self confident in yourself, think about what you eat before you eat it
There were many things that I learned from the article “The Oz Diet”. I found out some of the benefits from some types of food. I find interesting that we have to eat a certain amount of fats to have a good diet. Many food help us with some diseases. I’m going to take some of the tips out of this article and start doing some of the things that they said are good. And also that it is very good to have a certain amount of food and exercise.
As I was reading this article one line stood out to me the most “the problem is that a lot of folks just don’t know what a healthy diet looks like “. Personally I think this is the root of the obesity problem and its also why many americans become over weight.
Today in art class we talked about healthy meals because we were designing plates for the American Heart Association. I learned that a half of your plate should be fruits and veggies. I have never had someone tell me that. When i thought about what I eat every day I realized that a half of my plate is NEVER fruits and veggies. Why? This brings me back to my quote, I was never informed about what a healthy diet looks like. I know many others didn’t know this either. If we educate everyone on what a healthy diet looks like I think this will inspire people to eat right and all it takes is one person to change.
dont hate me for this article, just skip the intro, but it’s really good, so we are more aware about what we eat.
Like substituting chips with nuts, instead of ice cream, frozen yogurt, it’s little steps it takes that really cuts back on calories.
And Dr. Oz also was saying that you can still drink your coffee, eat your chocolate, but in moderation. Go over board and it’s as hazardous as critics say it is…
And the biggest mistake people make is this:
So you go for a run, and afterword you want to treat yourself, so you grab a muffin. NOOOO- you just gained back all the calories and more that you just burned.
Instead grab an apple, drink some water, and keep moving…
I also agree with Alexis, Obesity isnt something people should take lightly. It can cause major problems in people’s lives and their health. You should constanly watch what you are eating and excersize appropriatly. Being obese can lead to many health problems like Diabetes and Heart Attacks at younger or older ages. It is also one of the main causes of bullying in America. Most people don’t think about it much when they call someone fat or chubby, but to that person that is obese it could really hurt because you can never tell if that person is on a diet and they are trying to lose wight. Being obese is not a funny thing and it should not be taken lightly EVER. Most people don’t realise how nuch they really eat and how many calories they take in until they have become obese. So please watch what you eat and exercise as much as you can, and it cant hurt you to go on a walk every once and a while. Also if you are obese and you don’t like that you are don’t be afraid to go on a diet, most diets can only benifit and make you healthier plus they also make you look better just dont over do it and starve yourself just because you want to lose wieght starving yourself is still unhealthy for your body so you wouldn’t be getting any better.
This article is talking about having a healthy life and reasons why it can be difficult. The article states that one reason why people have a hard time going on diets is because they keep changing the food diets every time. and i agree with that because i have seem many people having different ways of becoming healthy and one person may be eating the right food but the other person may be thinking there eating the right food but they really could be eating the wrong food for a diet. they also said that eating salt and fats could be a reason of why people aren’t healthy but it really depends on how much fats and salt you eat because there also important for us. they talk about one big way that can help you in your dieting is exercizing because it helps you stay fit. so i think that people in this world should watch out for what they eat because it could make an impact on them in a good or bad way.
Kishan nailed it. You can not have the shape you want by just starving yourself through a diet. You have to include exercise. In a diet you are essentially slowly killing yourself by not giving yourself the nutrition you need, so why do people do it? They are desperate to have a healthy looking body. Why are people so lazy though? Is it impossible to go out for a 20-minute run around your neighborhood every day? Just don’t eat like you will die if you don’t clean everything off your plate in 2 minutes, and exercise daily and you will be fine.
This may not be relevant but I’ve heard several people say things like: “oh no I don’t want to go to McDonald’s cause I’ll get fat, lets just go to burger king.” Burger King will make you just as fat as McDonald’s and every other fast food restaurant, why do you think its McDonald’s making you fat? Some things I will never understand.
I agree with most of the responses to the article and i would say that obesity obviously a growing problem in the U.S and the only ways to stop it is to eat the right foods and exercise correctly. I also think that if this happens at an earlier age it is easier to stop before it is to late.
Eating healthy is the key to a healthy lifestyle and we should all being doing this. We shouldn’t do this for anyone else but us. I agree with Jamie M and Alexis S. Obesity in America is increasing at a fast rate. We should be careful of what we eat and when we eat. Having a meal in the middle of the middle of the night isn’t a good thing because you’ll gain weight. I don’t need a diet, but sometimes instead of ribs I’ll get a salad or a veggie soup. I like to maintain my healthy eating habits so that I can carry this on for the rest of the my life and not have to worry about future health problems.
I agree with Alexis S. She’s right obesity is a huge problem in America. When it comes to eating we have to be more careful, because the things we eat affect us big time. Eating healthy is very important. Take charge of your meals. McDonalds, Jack in the Box, and other fast food restaurants are good to have sometimes but not daily. Personally I do not eat McDonald’s, but my Grandmother and I take diets often. It’s important to eat right I cannot stretch it more. Eating right will help you stay strong and active. When you do all that you enjoy life in every way. I’m not saying do not pick up a happy meal or big fry, but choose wisely every day.
Imagine all the fat foods we Americans, Hispanics, African Americans, Asians I mean the worldwide we eat and eat fat foods like McDonalds and we don’t even think about the consequences. One day One year we might all be fat for all the fats and Oils we eat…. We need to watch out and eat healthy this can be a big problem to the earth and to the people the live in this planet which is nothing else than a piece of crap. Because “we” don’t take care of the environment or ourselves “we” are lazy.
Obesity is a huge problem in America and like this article said, it’s mainly because we have such an unlimited amount of food and we continue to eat more and more. I agree with what Jenna said about us being happy the way we are and that we should eat right and stay active, but sometimes we have to do more than that to be healthy. I have no problem with diets since I’ve grown up knowing and being around them. I agree that we should just focus on eating healthy, but sometimes you just have to take a step, like going on a diet, in order to become healthier. You shouldn’t go crazy and go on some weird new diet everyone’s advertising though, instead you should try something that will help you sustain the weight you lose. One diet that was brought up in the article was the Calorie Counting one. I know for a fact that this one actually does work and it can end up cutting down on all your snacking. As you do this you realize how you can end up feeling even fuller by cutting down on chips and getting something with less calories and more nutrition. Although we should be happy with who we are, we should take the steps to being more health conscious instead of saying it’s okay that so many people during this age are overweight.
Obesity is a growing problem in the US. Maintaining a good diet is a good way to prevent this, but it does not work without exercise. You can’t eat food even if it is healthy without exercising too. It is not hard to go outside and play for at least an hour a day. Having a good diet and playing a sport is a good way to keep your body healthy. If people try to take care of their bodies better, they would not have to go through obesity or heart disease.
Ok, so I only responded to the Up is Down portion, and Diet of the Mouth. These were really interesting, and I think those crazy diets- especially Cabbage Soup Diet, is not helpful. “Calories eaten should equal calories burned” is what Dr. Oz said and I agree, so you can maintain your weight and eat the right food. All foods are good in moderation so it’s ok to drink whole milk, eat eggs, and dark chocolate. The key is excercise, that is how you lose weight, by burning calories.
Honestly it doesn’t matter for people our age but it is important in everyday life.
Wow that was a long, important article. I have alot of family who are obese, some have diabetes and one has dimentia. So this article can really help my loved ones. I never thought that you could ever eat anything to help you loose weight. I already eat pretty well, cloose to how Dr. Oz has described we should, so im not really concerned about myself, but it makes me think. Maybe some of my family can learn these few things and add it to their diets, and live healthier and happier. Alot of people dont realize that it is just as important to eat healthy no matter your age. You need to stick to a few things, like Dr. Oz said, ” Eat in moderation; choose foods that look like they did when they came out of the ground (remember, there are no marshmallow trees); be an omnivore (there are multiple food groups for a reason); and get some exercise. Human beings are the only species in the world that has figured out how to be in complete control of its own food supply. The challenge now is to make sure the food doesn’t take control of us.” Its not as hard as people think you just need to put forth the effort. I wish everyone could have the oppertunity to read this whole article, maybe it could save them from getting Type 2 diabetes, or ever having to have heart surgery. I love my family and I know you love yours too, so dont you want tobe with them longer? Whether it is you or your family member the bad diets need to change, but that starts here with you and your choices.
What I got out this article was that the way of eating healthy changes over the years. There is to me no way to diet if the types of food to become healthy changes over years. I think this deals with individual subsetibility. Everyone body react to some thing differently. Also I think that people eat to much of that food for a diet over time and need to have a different way to be healthy
I think Dr.Oz is just trying to point out the fact that people are over weight and it’s not their fault. People keep trying to Change what is healthy and what is not for publicity in their product, in my opinion. How are they suppose to know what the right diet is if it is a different every other day. They aren’t healthy because they don’t know what is healthy.
It’s hard to think about the amount of bad things that are contained within all of the food we intake nowadays. That is the reason of why we actually have serving sizes on the nutrition facts… But the fats, calories, sugars, etc. that are within our normal diet are dramatic, considering half of the time we probably don’t even take a look at them. By having an irregular intake of sugar (so irregular that the insulin in your body cannot remove it properly), diabetes appears. Diabetes is the disease in which your body cannot make enough insulin to defeat the sugar that goes into your body. Once you have diabetes, you’ll have it forever. But, you can treat it by taking insulin injections which injects insulin into your intestines and kills the sugar within your body. However, if you do not take an insulin injection very often, it’s possible for you to have a blood clot, which can harm your arteries, and slow down the flow of red and white blood cells. Anyways, before I get carried away, I’m not that surprised after reading the Article of the Week “The Oz Diet”. A lot of people try the diets, and I’m pretty sure that they work (or at least I would hope, otherwise people would be getting ripped off). It’s a bit interesting as well, to find the perfect diet like this…
I never really worry about diets, and no one our age should. Yes we need to ensure we eat right and are active, but diets are frivilous. However this article makes sense, don’t go on a crazy unusual diet, just eat what is good for the body! I mean honestly, whoever thought just eating cabbage soup would work must’ve been really desperate. Now, image seems to be everything. If you want to be popular, you have to be “pretty”. But everyone is beautiful in their own way. Who cares what size you are!? I know I don’t. Insecurity is an overwhelming thing, it happens to all of us. Just don’t allow it to get the best of you. And if you’re older, and REALLY need a diet for health safety purposes, go right ahead. Yet don’t if you’re just doing it because that’s what society is wanting you to do. Trust me, society nowadays doesn’t know a thing they are talking about.
